Pixel Preview doesn't match exported PNG

I use Illustrator CS4 for icon design, so Pixel Preview is a pretty important feature for me. Unfortunately, I just found out (the hard way) that Pixel Preview isn't accurate - it doesn't show you exactly what you'll get when you export a PNG via Save for Web and Devices.
Here's an example from my current project that shows the problem (enlarged 4x):
A screen snap from AI with Pixel Preview off:
A screen snap from AI with Pixel Preview on:
The exported PNG file:
Look at the center of the second image: See that dark gray line bleeding from the light gray circle into the black area? Now look at the third image: The line isn't there.
(Please don't fixate on this one example. Since I noticed the problem, I've found inconsistencies all over the place. This one was just the easiest to see.)
If I can't count on the absolute, pixel-for-pixel accuracy of Pixel Preview, then this feature becomes worse than useless in my work, because it actually misleads me into making small tweaks that make the final output look worse.
If anyone knows of a workaround (or a setting that turns on "accurate mode"), I'd love to hear about it.

I can't state this definitively, but the inconsistency seems to happen with gradient fills. (The light gray semicircle in the example in my original post has a gradient fill with a pretty abrupt transition from light to dark.) Maybe the issue is specific to gradients?

  • Image in Lightroom doesn't match exported image viewed in Photoshop

After all my hard work in Lightroom, I export the image to a folder on my hard drive. When I open this exported image in Photoshop and view it alongside the Lightroom version of its "twin" in Lightroom, there is a significant difference. Why is this? I want to use these images in my books, but my time is wasted if I end up with anything other than what I created in Lightroom. Shouldn't these images match exactly?

Thanks Jao and Michael...the color management idea makes a lot of sense.
Adding to this idea, when I open the Pshop file I get a message about the doc having an embedded profile that doesn't match current RGB working space, and the usual 3 options: Use the embedded profile, Convert color to the working space, or discard embedded profile. No matter which option I choose, none of the opened docs match the Lightroom version.
The color balance is fine, but the colors aren't as vibrant. The Pshop photo is dull and lifeless compared to the Lightroom version. I used Clarity which added subtle brightness, and Vibrance to crank up the color in LR which added wonderful dimensionality and punch to the landscape scene, but the Pshop version has dulled these back down.

  • Exported Image Doesn't Match Export Presets After Use of Straightening Tool

Unlike my experience with previous versions, in Aperture 2.1, after applying the "Straightening Tool", I cannot get an exported image to match the dimensions set for "Export Preset." The results are a reduction in size.
It appears that the output is being based within the rectangular confines defined by the out of view corners of the rotated image rather than that of what is actually being displayed.
Is there a new method I am missing or is this a bug?

So, like really, no one has experienced this problem?
The resulting dimensions of the exported image, which was rotated by the "Straightening Tool" are smaller than that of the export image, of the same picture, not rotated, but with the same "Export Preset" selected.
    Example:
I want all my exported images to be a dimension of 200 x 300 pixels. Those exported without the "Straightening Tool" applied are exactly 200 x 300. Those, say with a 10º "Rotate" applied to the original and, exported with the same "Export Preset" dimensions, result in an image which is 145 x 216 pixels in dimension.
This is very unlike Aperture 1.5.6, in which the exported output of both image versions would be identical, at 200 x 300 pixels in dimension.

  • OS X's icon preview doesn't match JPEG

    Hi all,
I have a few photos that were passed to me. In the icon preview, they were the original photos. But when I opened them in Preview or iPhoto, they were the Photoshopped versions.
Anyone know what's going on? And how to extract the icon previews?
    Thanks!

But when I Get Info on the JPEG, the icon shown is for the modified image.
Additional info that I stumbled upon:
When resizing the icon preview in Finder, after a certain (larger) size, the icons would change to the modified versions. Shrinking the icons would bring back the original unmodified versions.
    Really strange behaviour...

  • Bridge preview does not match thumbnails

We've just updated the OS, and had to re-install Bridge and Photoshop (CS4). Unfortunately, the preview doesn't match the thumbnail in Bridge, nor does it match the file when I open it in Photoshop. As far as I am aware, they are both set to the same color space. I have also toggled the "Apply auto tone adjustments" box on and off in preferences, and it seems to make no difference.
This seems to be a new problem that has only occured since upgrading the OS.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • After effects CC export to premiere pro CC: audio doesn't match

    Hello!
I am making an animation serie for Belgian TV. They need me to export  only my audio from premiere (I make the animations in after effects).
    They need OMF format.
When I export from after effects CC > Premiere pro project (only to export my audio to OMF from here) the audio doesn't match.
Adobe media encoder doesn' support OMF unfortunately.
Example; if I stretch the audio time in after effects, premiere doesn't.
I am really stressing out and any help would be very welcome
    Thank you!
    Ellen

    Hello Jim
    Thanks for the reply!
When I import my after effects composition into premiere, it is perfectly visible and the audio is correct.
But now it is suddenly impossible to select > export > OMF
Do you know why this is?
    Thanks!

  • Still image pixel aspect ratio wrong in exported video (but correct in Premiere renders)

I've saved a targa still image from my footage and added it to the bin. It's properties show as follows:
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
This correctly matches my sequence settings as I'm working with 1080p widescreen footage.
The image appears as expected in the Program window both before and after rendering previews. However, once I export my sequence as a video file, the still image is squashed (displaying incorrectly):
A work around would be to stretch out the still to a width of 1920 in Premiere so that the export displays it back at its normal aspect ratio - which works - but I don't understand why I should have to do this.
The other solution I found was to go to the bin and 'Modify > Interpret Footage' and although "Use Pixel Aspect Ratio from File" already shows the correct settings, to actively reset it (to the same pixel aspect ratio)  with the 'Conform to' option:
    This works too.
    Surely a bug?
    (using Premiere Pro CC)

Thanks for the quick reply. But then why does the still's properties (in my bin) show the pixel aspect ratio as 1.3333 (not square pixels, 1.0) and should it not appear incorrectly in both the preview renders and the exported video ? This seems inconsitent to me.

  • Understanding pixel preview

    hello people.
im trying to understand the whole pixel preview thing in illustrator, as I do make websites and I usually use photoshop because i find the slicing faster and easier.
also things on the web are usually pixels so i feel photoshop is more accurate, and what I see is what ill get.
    so... here are my questions.
being that illustrator is vector -when i zoom in on a vector in illustrator its crisp and clean.
im guessing thats because each time I zoom in, illustrator is redrawing my vector at  a higher scale. as opposed to a raster image which when i zoom in, is NOT getting redrawn and looks pixelated because it IS made of pixels.
    is this right?
when i export something in illustrator to png or jpeg i have to make sure its the right exact size because it will be pixelated otherwise.
then there is anti-aliasing. if its not exactly aligned to the pixel grid it looks smudged.
so is pixel preview there to help see what it would look like when it is rastered?

Each time you zoom in in a vector art Illustrator is redrawing it (rasterizing it for on screen display) at the size of your monitor's pixels, meaning one pixel of the rasterized vector will fit in one of your monitor's pixels. In Photoshop this is possible only at 100% zoom. When you choose Pixel Preview, Illustrator behaves the same as Photoshop when rasterizing the vector objects for onscreen display.

  • Save for web doesn't match artboard

I have been using the artboard tool to try and save icons individually from a document with several dozen icons on the work space.  I click the artboard tool, drag a box around the icon and then do "save for web".  The resulting image I see in the save for web screen is slightly cropped and does not match the area that I selected with the artboard tool.
    Am I doing something wrong?
I am running Illustrator CS4 on a Dell PC (64 bit) with Windows 7 Professional.
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.
    Paul

You don't use pixel preview and possibly also do not work at 72dpi, do you? That's why your crop lands on sub-pixel values and is quantised to the next whole pixel, changing the effective output dimensions. Aside from that, why bother with artboards? You could just use the slice tool and save it all in one go...

  • Export PNG in CMYK vs. RGB. Changing colors.

Short version: Using Illustrator CC. I correctly exported a PNG logo in RGB (sent to client), but the new PNG logo looks much different than the old PNG logo that was exported incorrectly in CMYK (sent to client long ago).
Client wants to know why the NEW PNG logo looks so different than the EPS logo and the OLD PNG logo (all starting with the same Pantone color).
    Longer version:
I recently sent logos to my client in different formats.
ai, eps, eps CMYK, pdf, and png
Prior to creating the PNG version in Illustrator CC,
I changed Illustrator's color mode to RGB, then converted my Pantone colors to RGB (specific values per the Pantone book), then exported as PNG.
This created a much different blue than the CMYK eps version.
Someone else on the client side is working with my files and questioning why the blues look so different. The Pantone eps vs. the RGB version.
    Problem:
In the past, the PNGs had been created incorrectly--They had been exported in CMYK mode without converting anything to RGB and they matched much closer to the EPS version.
Now they are asking why there is such a big difference.
I did the process correctly, I'm not sure how to answer this. Why do they look so different?

So if I just leave the Document Color Mode as CMYK, leaving with the logo set in it's specific Pantone colors, and then Export/PNG, that will covert my CMYK colors to RGB for me. Seems almost too easy. Just go File/Export/PNG, but okay.
And while that may give me a better perceptual match, here's the other side of the issue.
They've given me and their web company specific RGB values for their logo. These are based on the Pantone book, and likely different than the conversion Illustrator will do.
The idea being, they want the website and logo to be the exact same blue. And they are based on the values they gave, but they look different than the original Pantone. Brighter and more vibrant. I'm dealing with another member of the client team, trying to use Illustrator on her end for smaller tasks, and she wants to know why the rgb PNG logo (which I entered in manual values for based on the Pantone book), is so different than the Pantone eps file. In the past, when I just exported as a straight PNG without tinkering, the perceptual match was there. Now it isn't. How can I explain this?

  • Saved file doesn%27t match original text

Using LV 2010.  I have an application where I'm encrypting a file and saving it to the hard drive as a text file.  The problem I'm having is that the string of characters that I'm writing to the file does not match the string of characters that are read from the file.  The files match for the first 10 characters, then in the original string, there is a \r character that is dropped from the file.  The rest of the file doesn't match too well after that.  Also, the size of the strings are different too by a few thousand characters.  Is there some setting in the file read or write that could be causing this?  Thanks.

  • Audio doesn't match video because repeated half way through

    Hi guys,
I am currently editing videos from my Canon SLR with Adobe Premiere Elements (Windows).
In the same project, I have only uploaded videos taken the same day with the same equipment. I have been able to process them all normally apart from one. For some reason, when I play this file with a basic video player, everything works fine but when I import it in the Adobe software and play it either through the small window or in the timeline, I have the same problem:
Everything works fine (audio and video in sync), until it reaches a specific point (totally random as far as I can tell) when the video keeps going but suddenly the sound repeats itself from the beginning of the file (and the audio which would correspond to the video is replaced by it). For you to understand better the problem:
    Video:   ABCDEF
    Audio:   ABCABC
I have tried opening it in a different project and somehow it happens exactly at the same point.
I am totally clueless of what it comes from and getting really frustrated!
    Any idea?
    Cheers
    Babs

Hello, I'm new to using forums like this.  Is it appropriate for me to post that I'm having the same issue?  Also sounds similar to Audio doesn't match video because repeated half way through as well.
    My situation is:
    Win7 64-bit, i7 920, 2.67GHz, 8GB RAM
Multiple Nikon D7000 video clips I've taken play back fine except for the following clip.  In Windows Media Viewer, I have no problem, but in PE10, in the timeline editor, this clip repeats the audio from the beginning starting about 6 minutes into the video.  I have Quicktime version 7.7.5 installed which I noticed was mentioned as a possible culprit in the other thread.
I've been using my camera primarily for stills, but decided to have my mom tell her story before she wasn't able to.  I'm so frustrated with this problem because I know the audio is just fine since I can play it back synchronized throughout the entire clip in WMV.  I've tried cleaning out PE caches as best I can figure them out and created new projects without any better luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm open to getting a new version of PE or another program if I could believe that I wouldn't run into this issue again.  This seems like such a vanilla problem since all my other clips seem to be fine and this one does too on WMV.
Thanks for any help you can provide.  I don't really know where else to go to figure this out.

  • Bounding Box Doesn't Match Object (Illustrator CS4)

I'm not sure if this is an error on my part or a bug, but for the last week or so, the bounding box for my objects hasn't actually matched the objects. This is really problematic when I try to transform the object using the bounding box handles.
On occasion, after I transform the object the bounding box will match it again and will transform correctly. Sometimes it will stay off. If it does reorient itself, undoing the transformations back the original size will cause the bounding box to reset back to it's mismatched state.
Things I have tried to resolve the issue:
    Reset the Bounding Box
Copying and pasting the shape to a different document
Starting a new document from scratch (I thought it was possible I corrupted the file)
Return Keyboard Shortcuts to the Default
    Restarting Illustrator
    Restarting my System
To my knowledge, my system hasn't been updated in the last week nor has anything new been installed. However, IT does push out maintenance so there is a possibiltiy that it was updated and I don't know about it. The only programs open while working in Illustrator are Bridge, Outlook 2007, IE8, Explorer, InDesign CS4, Word 2007, Photoshop CS4, Acrobat Professional 9, Dreamweaver CS4, PowerPoint 2007, Previewer and possibly FireFox 3.something (though not necessarily all at once - generally about 7 of the above listed). My system runs XP Professional SP3 with an Intel Core2 Quad @ 2.66GHz and 3.25 GB of RAM. The objects are not grouped, do not contain clipping masks, do not contain transparency masks and are not compound paths. They are simple paths/shapes, often rectangles.
I have included some pictures to better explain my issue. This first image indicates how the bounding box doesn't match the rectangle.
The second image shows the process of transforming the shape via dragging.
The third image shows the result.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Mr. Bugge:
Thank you for your response and I apologize for the delay in mine. I couldn't try all of the fixes immediately because I had to complete some job duties before I could tinker with this issue.
    Things that did not work:
    Closing Firefox
    Clearing the Preferences
    Moving the Preferences Folder
    Deleting Temp Files
Closing Other Adobe Programs (Including Bridge Running in the Background
Things I cannot do for various reasons:
    Re-installing Acrobat
Turning Off the Firewall (My Company Only Uses 1 Anyway)
Things I haven't tried yet but hope to try later:
Update Printer Definition or Change Default Printer
    Check for Corrupt Fonts
    Clear My Font Cache
    Things I learned:
The issue is most easily recreated by transforming an object to a smaller object. However, zooming in will realign the bounding box but it will only stay aligned when zoomed in. I find it very curious.
Even if I don't end up finding an answer, I do appreciate your time and help.
