Pixelated enlarged screen - display issues related to external hard drive

Hi.  I had an external hard drive plugged into my macbook.  I have a second monitor hooked up.  My screen is pixelated and enlarged (I have to scroll to see the whole desktop).  The icons are rearranged and very blurry. Everything is blurry and enlarged.  My files will open, but they are all blurry as well.  When I noticed these display issues, I realized the mac was not detecting the hard drive that was plugged into the usb port. I  unplugged it and then a LOT of folders with the hard drive name appeared on the desktop and then disappeared.  I know I may have misstepped by unplugging it, but what can I do now?  I have rebooted, shut down, checked zoom and screen resolution settings, and unplugged the monitor.  It's the same when I uplug the second monitor and just view my desktop on the mac.  Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

There is a multitude of posts here addressing the dangers of using Mackeeper. But just look at this:

While this particular problem may not have been caused by Mackeeper, I urge you to uninstall this piece of trash.

  • How do I record a quicktime screen recording directly to an external hard drive?

I want to record a screen recording directly to an external hard drive (or flash drive/SD card) and I've heard that doing so will improve system performance by reducing the workload somehow. I'm not entirely sure.
Is that true, will it work, and how do I do it?
    Help would be much appreciated!

I think USB is much slower than your internal HDD connection and you might start losing frames. The system itself will do the same job... the only where performance may increase are the actions where you need to read/write from/to the disk i.e. open an app or save file.

  • Syncing issues with an external hard drive

Hello, having a syncing issue with my iTunes right now. I have my library set up on an external hard drive because there isn't anymore space on my computer for my music, and the other day my roommate unplugged the external to ironically sync my ipod. There was a syncing issue of course but it's happened before so I wasn't worried, but now iTunes can't find a few hundred songs in my library still. I've restarted iTunes and replugged in my hard drive multiple times and restarted my computer and consolidated my library as well but nothing's working. All my music is still on my external but iTunes can't read some of the songs for some reason. Any suggestions at this point? I'm lost. Thanks.

    Welcome to AD!
What drive letter did the exHD use before this happened? Do you know?
Windows can change hard drive letters for USB devices without telling you.
Use Windows Disk Management to change the drive letter back to what it was before your roomie created this havoc. Then start itunes, and tell your roomie it's their turn to I dunno, clean the toilet, or something useful.

  • Issues with Portable External Hard Drive (500GB)

I recently purchased the 500GB Toshiba-branded external hard drive in blue from my local Wal-Mart. It has been working fine for the past few months, but when I plugged it into my computer this morning, it didn't light up the LED and I couldn't feel the disk drive spinning as normal.
I tried to call Toshiba support, but all they did was ask me if the cord was damaged (it's not, at least not in any obvious fashion), and then tell me that it's the drive itself and to start a warranty claim. When I asked about all the data I already have on there (all of my family pictures and my music collection), they basically said tough noogies, they can't do anything about it.
I am going to try and plug it in at home and see if it's just this computer, but it's worked fine on this computer dozens of times. Does anyone have any advice on where to find a cord that would work, or other possible solutions? I absolutely CAN'T lose the data that's on here.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

    Hi
I too have an issue with my portable 500gb Toshiba hard drive. No LED lit up when plugged into the USB port (Ive tried them all). I have lots of data on there that I recently wanted backing up and uploaded from my laptop whilst that was being repaired. I too believe it may be the connector because it now seems a littel bit loose. Im no technogeek so can someone please advise how I remove the drive from the portable device and where I can get another case from...or even just retrieve the data and then get rid?

  • Blue screen on start up with external Hard drive connected

On start up Imac freezes on light blue screen with external hard drive connected via firewire. Starts okay without hard drive connected. I have repaired the drive with no resolution of the problem.

You might try starting the iMac in "verbose mode" by holding down command-V when booting:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
That could show you some messages that might explain the problem.
Another approach is to launch the Console utility and look for messages dated around the time of a hang.

  • I am having issues with my external hard drives since installing Mountain Lion

I am unable to get my time machine to backup consistently on my external hard drives since installing Mountain Lion. One of my drives seems to have lost all data since installing Mountain Lion. Is this problem cropping up with other folks? BTW, all of my drives are Lacie brand.

Do you mean, when you select it to be used for backups, the Preferences window shows "none"?  If so, that's not a problem.  That doesn't get updated until the next backup to that disk is finished. See #B3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • Why does my MBP get the grey screen after backing up to external hard drive???

(firstly, i'm a complete moron on terminal, though i managed to unlock the external HD. i appreciate the simplicity of mac, i.e. a moron in many ways.)
for some bizarre reason, every time i copy files to the external HD, i end up with a lock on the external HD and the dreaded spinning grey screen when i restart the MBP. i've managed to get rid of the grey screen by reinstalling with the snow leopard DVD without formatting, but this is obviously not practical. am i doing something wrong??
the last time i did this, i dragged my "user" files. then i dragged my entire internal HD into a folder created in my external HD. i've done this with my powerbook and older OS without issues, but OS 10.5 and 10.6 don't seem to work without ending up with the spinning grey screen and a lock on the HD.
thanks in advance for your input. (and please keep it simple...)

no, but it's definitely not due to a corrupt external drive. this happened with two different brands of drives. the first time with a lacie, i thought my MBP hard drive was damaged, but it was determined that a reinstall was all it needed. the same thing happened with an OWC. they both work fine. there seems to be some kind of a permission problem which gets screwed up somwhere.

  • Having issues with my external hard drive on 6th gen Airport Extreme

I recently upgraded from a 5th gen to a 6th gen AEBS.  I'm having several issues with it and my 10.8.4 Macs.
When I try to mount the self-powered external drive, which appeared to work well with the 5th gen, the disk will often become unreachable.  Then if I open Airport Utility, it will say that it cannot find the router.
The only way to bring the router back to life is to turn off the drive and unplug it.
I have 7.7.1 on the AEBS as I upgraded to that right away via my phone, but now I cannot seem to downgrade back to 7.7.  The only reason I want to try this is because 7.7.1 was supposed to *fix* external drive issues, and maybe it made it worse for me (as I never actually tried 7.7)
    Any ideas?

I don't have any experience with hard drives attached, but I can say that I had a different problem with the 7.7.1 firmware update on a brand new Airport Extreme, and was told by Apple tech support that there was no way to download 7.7 to downgrade.  My only option was the return the Airport and exchange it for a new one.

  • Anyone got Issue with Time Machine on Mac OS 10.9.5 on External Hard Drive?

Mac Book Air June 2012, Mac OS 10.9.5 (fully updated) external Hard Drive, USB 3
    Dear all,
Just realized that my regular Time Machine back-ups don’t work anymore: despite several back-ups, Time Machine tells me that I did not back-up for 10 days but I did not get any error message.
Suspected an issue with my external Hard Drive, so took a brand new one 1TB, labelled Mac OS, USB 3, sold at Apple Corner.
Registered this new drive in Time Machine, started a full back-up of about 350 Gb, and it is hanging up, 13Kb copied in one hour.....
This become very critical as I don’t have back-up since a few days....
Your help will be upmost appreciated.
    Best regards to all,
    Bernard

Temporarily turn Time Machine "off". Make sure a backup is not in progress, then rebuild the Spotlight database according to the following instructions: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
(summary: drag the entire source volume to the exclusions list, click OK, then remove it by clicking the minus ("–") button.)
This will have no effect on any existing backups.
Let Spotlight finish reindexing and then turn Time Machine back "on". Select "Back Up Now".

  • Issues with external hard drive enclosure

I've been having these issues with my external hard drive since I got it, it seems to be the enclosure
These issues sometimes occur if the hard drive is off but plugged in
-boot will stall after post, before grub
-usb mouse won't work unless I unplug it and plug it back in
-dmesg gives errors about failure to enumerate device
-stalling at other points during boot (continues as soon as I unplug enclosure)
And today, both windows and linux stopped detecting it properly
dmesg said something about a read error.
Then it started working again as suddenly as it started, when I unplugged it and plugged it back in.
Does this sound like a deffective enclosure?

    R00KIE wrote:
I'd say bad power supply (if it has an external power supply).
Two external enclosures have done that to me already (but one is almost certain to do it while the other just started to do it recently), if the HD I have in the enclosure is a bit older (and noisier) I can even hear the HD spin down a little and spin up again, of course that whatever I was doing explodes in the process.
Mind you that the HD is confirmed to be working properly by connecting it inside a desktop pc.
I have couple other power adapters I can try. I got the same enclosure for my dad. I have a brick for a LaCie drive too. (I bought the lacie drive a year ago, but the power supply buzzed loudly. I put in a support request, but ended up returning the drive, and they sent me a new power after that)

  • Having issues with permissions on external hard drive.

I'm very new to my MacBook Pro, and I'm having an issue with my external hard drive. I used it to bring important files (mostly music) from my windows 7 laptop to my mac. Once I finished that I noticed that I was missing some of my music which luckily I have on CD so I uploaded them to another computer and loaded them onto my EH. This is where the problem occurs, when I drag my music from my EH most of it gets copied, but a small number end up giving me an error and won't go to iTunes. I've dug a little deeper into the issue and it all comes back to not having proper permissions to us my EH. However the songs that were imported still open in itunes when clicked on. I've tried looking for the lock symbol under Get Info, and it isn't there.
    Any Ideas?

Yes - with Windows/Mac 'compatibility, it's really a one or the other compatibility - without third party software. Just as Paragon has software that will enable you to read & write to an NTFS volume on a Mac, so they have software for Windows that will read Mac-formatted drives - http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/.
NTFS, with Paragon's NTFS for Mac, is probably the best way to go if you want to 'share' the drive with both Macs and Windows machines.

  • External Hard Drive Input/Output error

I recently started having problems with an external hard drive setup that I did not have problems with prior to upgrading to 10.5.5 and trying to setup the drive to be compatible with Time Machine.
The hard drive enclosure that I have has 2 bays for two SATA drives. I have used this enclosure without any problems until I tried to get 1 drive to act as the backup drive for Time Machine and the other to be storage. I formatted them using Drive Genius. I used the option for GUILD or GUIL which it said was the better format for using with Time Machine.
The first problem I ran into since upgrading and reformatting the drives is I got an "input/output" error the first couple times I connected the drive via USB to my Mac. I could still use the drives but I got weird errors every once in a while like "input/output error" or "device was not ejected properly" even though the device had not been unplugged.
Now the drives will not mount using OS 10.5.5. The drives show up when I open Disk Utility, but I cannot get them to mount. I have ran Disk Utility First Aid, and it says the drives are fine. There is one error that shows up when I run the "Repair Disk" feature. It reads "Invalid content in Journal". But Disk Utility also says "The volume was repaired successfully".
I have seen some posts when I do a search in google about this issue and it seems this is a known issue. Every suggestion I see says to insert your Tiger DVD and reformat the drive using that and the problem will be solved. The only problem with that is I have a lot of important files on the drive that I cannot lose. I had the files backed up until I moved them to the new drive a while back. Now I do not have a backup because I was in the process of switching to bigger drives and erased the old drives after doing so because everything was working fine.
I am hoping someone out there may have some suggestions (other than erasing the drive) to get my dives to mount so I can transfer the data off to another drive and reformat after.
    Thanks,
    Paul Rugg

    Thanks for the suggestion.
Do you think that would work better than Drive Genius? I bought Drive Genius 2 and it does not even see the drives when they are plugged in unlike Disc Utility which can see the drives but cannot mount either one.
Maybe this following post I made to a different questions may help. The data on the drive is other buying another program for if it will work. I think my next step may be to go over to a friends place and try to mount the drives on his computer and transfer stuff off if they connect.
text below posted to other question relating to external hard drive problem.
I have recently had the same mounting issue with my new external hard drive. I just purchased a new 750Gb Western Digital Sata drive and got everything transfered over to it. Immediately, I got an error saying that the drive had been ejected incorrectly even though it was still plugged in. I was a little curious. I restarted the computer (hard drive still plugged in via USB 2.0) and the drive showed up just fine. I plugged another 250Gb drive into the same case (2 bays) and the 250GB drive showed up just fine.
Well, I then noticed there was an OS upgrade available when I ran Software update so i ran it and when I rebooted the drives were gone. I can see the drives in Disc Utility, but they will not mount. Drive Genius cannot see either disc. Disc Utility says I need to repair the drives, but when I do it says they are fixed but they don not mount.
The problem really seems to be related to mounting USB external drives. I got ahold of 2 seperate external firewire hard drives and one shows up just fine while the other has the same problem (both work on other systems. I would try wiping the drives and reformatting but ALL MY stuff is on them and not everything has been backed up. Yuck! I have not tried connecting my hard drive to another Mac yet.
The drives being used are #1 Maxtor Maxline Plus II 250GB SATA/150 HDD 1.5b/s 7Y250m00654ra
and #2 Western Digital WD7500AACS WD Caviar GP Green Power drive.
I have another post similar to this and I have not received any feedback, but I have been doing my own searching and have found similar posts on the net.
Anybody have any clue what might be going on here? It really seems to be related to my upgrade.

  • My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air - solution?

My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air. The light on the hard drive is on, but it won't appear on my computer's desktop or anywhere else. How can I fix this?

    Hi rivraff,
If you are having issues mounting an external hard drive volume, you may want to see if it shows up and/or can be repaired in Disk Utility; you may find the following article helpful:

  • Can't copy files to an external hard-drive - help??

    Hi all,
My problem originally stems from the never-ending issue of using external hard-drives with a Mac (this is a huge downside to owning a Mac by the way, so if TPTB are reading this they need to fix it!).  My Toshiba hard-drive was being used as my Time Machine, until a few months ago when it stopped being recognised by my Mac.  Because it doesn't show up in Finder or Disc Utility when I plug it in (even though the lights are on and I can hear the power running in it), I haven't been able to re-format it to make it useable again (assuming that would work).  So I basically have a £80+ tea cup holder.....
Because of this, I decided this week to use my WD hard-drive to manually back up some files on my computer, since Time Machine hasn't been able to run since March.  However, when I copy the files I want to move over, "Paste" is not showing up as an option on my WD drive (it's greyed out).  I can't drag and drop the files as I get the circle with a line through it when I try, and I don't want to anyway as I don't want the files removed from my computer.
Can someone advise me on what to do?  The WD drive is showing up, and it has space to accept these files, so if I can get the paste option to work we'd be ready to rock and roll!  One of the folders I want to copy is my Music folder, and given it's size I know this will take hours to do, but it should be showing the paste option, shouldn't it?  I'm running a Macbook Pro that's less than a year old, and all the software bits are up to date.
(Of course, if Apple would fix the stupid hard-drive issue then I wouldn't be having any of the problems..... GRRRRRR!)
    Thanks in advance,
    Millie

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Looking for an external hard drive for my ibook...

I know there are a lot of posts related to external hard drives, but I have very specific needs that haven't been answered as far as I can tell. I run Tiger 10.4.11 on my 1.33 ghz ibook (which WON'T DIE) and need a hard drive that:
    1) is Mac-friendly
    2) Can be set to do auto backup when I plug in my computer
    3) has at least 500GB storage
    4) has at least a 3-year warranty
    5) can run, power-wise, off my USB hub (though this is the least of my concerns, frankly)
    6) can be used with a Macbook when I buy one next year (very important)
I'm not so concerned with speed, as I will mostly be doing backup at night, while I'm asleep. Does such a drive exist for around $100?

    1) is Mac-friendly
98% of the drives meet this criteria
    2) Can be set to do auto backup when I plug in my computer
I don't know any drives that will do that. Some have buttons that allow you to do backup by pushing the button.
    3) has at least 500GB storage
    4) has at least a 3-year warranty
    A lot of those available.
    5) can run, power-wise, off my USB hub (though this is the least of my concerns, frankly)
Look for a "portable" external drive.
    6) can be used with a Macbook when I buy one next year (very important)
Any drive that matches the criteria above.
Does such a drive exist for around $100?
Yes many. You can watch Dealmac.com for hard drive deals. It is pretty easy to get 1 TB for $100 these days.
