Pixelated Fonts - Help

I've been reading through the threads here on text in DVSP and how it's better to import PS for menus. I did a test and it's not looking any better to me. In fact when I simulate it the fonts in DVSP itself looks better. Maybe I'm not creating the layers in PS correctly? I've watched a few demos online. I'm creating DVDs for an event and the buttons and text has to look good. Any suggestions? Would it be better to create something in FC? I don't even know if that's possible. Help..thanks.

Couple of things in general - you need to make sure that you are creating the proper size menus in Photoshop (you can start with one of the presets, such as DV or DV Widescreen). Make sure to use larger sans-serif fonts and all layers and effects should be rasterized. 20pt plus is a good idea, and sometimes things like drop shadows helps. (Depends) Also tiffs or picts and not jpegs.
I have been using Motion alot more for layouts and does a nice job. Even if the background is not a "video" background, using a movie can help - make it 30 seconds or so. Export using an uncompressed codec then encode in Compressor.

  • Adobe flash CS5, how do I do pixel fonts?

    Hi guys,
I'm pretty sure in previous versions of flash I could create pixel fonts. Just wondering if I can still do these in CS5? Say for arial 9pt. If not I'll just bang them out in PS pngs.
    Any help would be great

You don't.  Adobe doesn not make a version of Flash for iOS devices.

  • Pixelated Font out of After Effects and in the FCP timeline

I've posted this questions before, but I'm still having trouble.  I create an animation is After Effects that is composed of a layer Photoshop file.  Looks fine in AE and when I play the exported movie on my desktop. See below.
I put it on the timeline in Final Cut and Voila! this:
The font pixelates.  In addition, I'm getting pixelated font in my layered photoshop files in my timeline.  This is an issue I cannot recall having in the past.
I was advised on my last post for this issue not to use the DV-NTSC codec to export from After Effect but no matter what I use I get the pixelation once I put it in the Final Cut timeline.  So is is possible that the issue lies with something in my layered Photoshop file?  This is ultimately going to play on a 12 foot high screen so there no hiding even a minor lack of quality.  Help!
My After Effects is version 6.0
Thanks for anything you can do!

What are the properties of the clip from Ae?
These are my export choices and I've tried DV-NTSC which matches the final cut settings and under advice from this forum the Uncompressed 10-bit and H.264.  Same pixelated font but only in the FCP timelime.  Plays fine in Quicktime on the deskstop with no pixelation on the font
What are your Sequence settings in FCP?
    DV-NTSC
Did you render the clip on the FCP Timeline?
    Yes, didn't make a difference
The Final Cut Pro canvas shows you a low res proxy. That conserves resources and should not be what you use to determine quality. Export the clip and view it in QuickTime Player 7--Play beautifully....no crappy font.
(not QT X). Make sure QT7 is set to use Hi Quality Playback (in the Preferences dialog). Better yet, view it on a TV set.
Views on the TV as pixelated.
The typeface that you are using. While elegant and pretty, it is very unsuitable for television--Yes, absolutely agree, but it's a client produced photoshop file that matches the invitations for the Gala.  They may allow me to change the font to something close, but even those fonts would probably create the same problem.
Considering using text font in Final Cut to solve the issue, but I just don't want to "say Uncle" just yet.  I would like to figure out the problem.  I feel like I exist in a constant learning curve...just commentary of life in today's world there.
Once again, any suggestions would be appreciated.  Plus I don't understand why my photoshop files look terrible in the timeline as well.  I just haven't had that problem before.

After a small discussion in a seperate thread, it was apparent that there may be a need for a list of places where you can get free fonts.
Please contribute information that would help the community.  It could be advice on where to get good free fonts or even advice on places that should be avoided because of bad quality fonts, etc.  Also, feel free to suggest some places that may have inexpensive paid fonts that are high quality as well.
Obviously, avoid suggesting pirated fonts or where to get them.  Keep this discussion "legit".

Sorry, I was confused by your profile signature showing "GarageBand (Mac) '11".
It is very similar in the newest GarageBand 10.0.2:
Enable Audio Units in the GarageBand Preferences > Audio/Midi.
    Create a software instrument track.
Show the Smart Controls and click the button.
In the Info panel scroll, to make the Audio Units brick visible and click the "Instrument" control.  Select "AuInstrument > Apple > DLSMusicDevice" and click it, to open the settings.
This should show you a panel, where you can select a Sound Bank. Does that show your sound font?

  • Vertical faded pink lines and pixelated fonts in the Menu, how to fix?

    Hi there,
I bought my iMac in Jan 2010, and just after my Apple Care expired three years later I started to have some problems I have no idea how to fix, hope someone can help.
When starting the computer, I get either a grey screen (I cannot go further or see anything else), or after starting the computer, seems like only the screensaver works, and if you try to open any menu, you'll get a black screen.
All this happened right after the last update.
I followed all the steps advised by Apple to fix the grey screen, but none of them worked.
I also formatted the hard drive (I was using 10.8) and installed other OS (10.6).
It worked well, except that I got now time vertical faded pink lines right after starting the computer, and the fonts in the menu looks like pixelated, they're not clear. but it only happens with the menu, Safari and other programs look fine.
    Any idea what's going on?

This looks as though you may have a failing GPU.
You can try these resets that may help, but it looks like a hardware failure.
You may want to take it in to an Apple store genius bay, they will diagnose it for free and give you your options.

  • Pixellated type - help!

I'm new to imovie and I've searched for answers to this topic to no avail - so I'm guessing it's something very obvious that I've missed. The problem is that my type looks sharp in Preview but when I add it to my movie it looks really pixellated and the colour is off. How can I make the type render properly?? Help!

Hi alanaalana - welcome to the forum!
Usually, it will look better once it is screened (DVD or whatever). Also, it often improves on the preview screen once you play the clip.
Keep in mind that it is best to use the more standard fonts and in the largest size possible, preferably sans serif, and to avoid red colour for example, as it does not render well.

  • External Hard Drives and Fonts -- Help!

I run a Mac OSX laptop, with Boot Camp to run Windows XP Pro. I recently decided to dabble in Photoshop again (trying to design fun wedding invitations). I have Photoshop CS2 for Windows which runs perfectly on my external hard drive. The problem that I have found is that I have no way to use the fonts that Windows has to offer running CS2 from the hard drive. I have limited space on my Windows partition (one reason that I opted to go with CS2 from hard drive regardless of how that affected the speed), so there is no option for running Photoshop from my internal drive. Is there a way to use fonts from Windows from the external drive? Or is there somewhere within the program files for CS2 that I can import fonts to so that I can use them? Thanks for any help that you can give! If more information is needed, just let me know and I'll give you as much as I can.

  • Exporting through Adobe Media Encoder as MPEG2-DVD but quality is pixelated. Help!

So, I am exporting my project through media encoder - MPEG2-DVD, Quality 5, NTSC, 29.97 drop frame, Progressive, Standard 4:3, VBR 2 Pass, 7.4697, 7.4697, 8.0382, Frames 3 & 15. I have done this process many, many times. Today, I am getting this pixelated junk when I pull the exported file into Encore. It looks smooth in the window prior to export but then it comes out like this. I am using footage that I captured into Premiere Pro and animation created in After Effects. Can anyone help?

  • DVD from HD720 is extremely pixelated- Please Help

    Hi
I've shot a project with HD (HM171 on a P2 Card) and edited as DVCPRO HD 720
I've made the film as a multi image (3 layers/images on one screen) and tried exporting to DVD Studio Pro on a number of formats but all results are very heavily pixelated. (3 layers each at 27% size)
There is a major amount of jagged edges and blockiness to the images and I don't know how to fix this.
I've exported a normal single channel/single image piece at normal size and it's looked ok.
The settings I've used are to let DVD Studio Pro encode in SD settings by creating a quicktime export using the current FCP sequence settings.
I've also encoded through compressor using best quality DVD settings mpeg2 2-pass and still it looks blocky
Please can anyone help me! I'm so stuck with this

How's the quality of the FCP exported self-contained movie?
In Compressor, make a duplicate of the Best Quality 90 minute preset, turn ON Frame Controls and set the Resize to Better or Best, select Progressive and Better.
What frame rate do you edit at? If your trying to compress 60p MOV down to 30 DVD, Compressor may struggle to maintain quality. Better to start with 30p or better yet 24p in FCP

  • Ugly Fonts Help

    Hi
I'm having a rough time with getting the font I want using
DW8. I've built a little website www.carltongreen.com and the text
is just plain ugly in my estimation. I'm not understanding the
'css' panel whatsoever. No matter what I try ,I can't get a good
clean font. I'm looking for a font which is NOT bold--as a matter
of fact , I'm looking to to have a font very similar to the font in
this message, but everytime I try to decrease the font weight/size,
it always ends up looking BOLD and horrible. I'm frustrated beyond
belief. Can someone please help me get this problem sorted out?

  • Exporting as a PDF with missing fonts - help please?

    Hi,
I am using Windows In Design CS4 and an agency provided us with a template via Mac OSX.
Some of the fonts they used appear to be missing on Windows (mainly the ITC bookman family), I open the file anyway. When I export it to a PDF the PDF appears for the most part to be the same, despite the missing fonts.
    My questions are:
Is the copy now just a closest match chosen by In Design (I think it may be using Bookman Old Style? If not, what is stopping me using font inserted by an external agency?
Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy the ITC bookman family?
I appreciate your help; I’m a beginner who has to teach himself!!
    Neil

Bookman Oldstyle should be a very close match (if that is, indeed, what's getting substituted). I wouldn't bother buying ITC Bookman, unless you have to roundtrip your files with the agency. Substituting fonts and checking line endings would get old fast.
So you can be sure of what's getting substituted, go to Type > Find Font, find all usages of ITC Bookman and replace them with Bookman Oldstyle. It seems like you have a PDF from the agency, so you can compare a few substitutions and see if anything changed. You should expect line endings in running copy (long paragraphs) to change slightly.
If you really feel the need to buy ITC Bookman, I would just buy it from ITC (http://www.itcfonts.com/fonts/detail.aspx?PID=201890). Their price is not going to be much different than anyone else's. Check with the agency to make sure they have Type 1 ITC Bookman, not Opentype ITC Bookman, and then buy the same format they have. It's even possible they have a Truetype version. You would want to match it exactly, so you would have to buy the same font that they have, but in PC format instead of Mac format.

  • Font help needed

I have AI files generated by another user which contain fonts with special characters.  I have received and installed that font, but when I open the documents in AI CS5, the special characters do not display properly.  The font is a TT font generated using Mac, I am using windows.  However, I can use this font in other applications - for example, MsWORD - without any problems. But the special characters WILL NOT display in AI CS5. The regular characters from this font WILL display properly in AI. Help please. Thanks.

Set a different default language and encoding for "non-Unicode characters" in your system settings.
