Pixelated idvd menu screen

I have made a slideshow in FCPX and exported it as a quicktime movie. I then imported that into iDVD 7.1 and when i am testing, the menu and movie look great.
Whe i burn the DVD the menu screen looks terrible. bith the image and the titles are very pixelated. the movie however plays perfetly.
Please help.
Thanks.

Hi
IMPORTANT - DVD is as standard only SD-Video and can not be any better whatever tools used.

FCE/P to iDVD
Several things
• How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
• Free space on Start-up hard disk
• Encoding
• Brand and type of DVDs used
• Burn speed set
• iDVD BUG
• Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
• Disable Screen and Energy saver
• IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
• Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
• Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Encoding
• I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
• I use Verbatim
• I use DVD-R
Burn speed set
• I set down this to x4 (or x1)
iDVD BUG
• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
Use of Chapters
• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
Material used to build the movie
• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.

May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Images pixelated in iDVD main screen

    hi all,
i create an annual dvd with slideshows and videos. this is my 8th one and i've never had this problem before!
i'm using the idvd them "portfolio". when i first started populated the drop zones, everything was fine. the photos i'm using are hi-res and looked great. a few hours into making the video and SOME photos in the drops zones are all blurry and pixelated. i try dropping the photos in again, quitting, restarting, all that good stuff. nothing helped. i then re-exported the photos and put them in a different folder and dropped them into the drop zones. that worked and the photos were back to normal. until i left the main menu screen and some photos became pixelated again. what gives?! it's driving me crazy. i had it perfect and then as soon as i went to burn the dvd, the photos looked bad again.
here are screen shots of when it looks good and then when it doesn't.

It could just be the screen rendering of the images.  Make a disk image of the project and play it with DVD Player.  Check the images again and see if they are clear or blurred.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • IDVD - dvd plays automatically without going to the menu screen

    Hi,
I'm new to iDVD and burned my first project yesterday, after transfering it from iMovie.
A problem: I created chapter markers in iDVD, which when imported into iDVD appeared there. The home page let's you choose either to play the movie or select a scene. However, after burning the project to DVD and inserting it into a DVD player, it starts the movie automatically!
I would like it to go, by default, to the menu screen when inserting into a DVD player - so I can choose scenes. Any suggestions how I can get it to do that?
    Thank you,
    Mont

As you have rightfully pointed out above; I wouldn't assume iDvd'08 and iDvd'09 are identical versions. But they are very similar. There are more significant differences within separate iMovie versions, as well as iPhoto, GB, etc.
Have I tested the difference between iDvd'08 vs. iDvd'09? No, not yet. As soon as I do I'll make every attempt to post a few of the differences. At the moment, I'm looking into separate volumes / hard drive bootability differences between Tiger vs. Leopard on both an external FW HD as well as internal ATA and SATA hard drives. And it seems I have my work cut out for me in this regard for at least the next few weeks. As soon as I complete this latter issue I will come back to iDvd.
Under Tiger I didn't have to worry about making a clone (using CCC or SuperDuper) of my existing volume/s that contained iDvd and other i-apps. But apparently (at least at first glance) this is longer the case under Leopard.

  • Is there a way to make the resolution of my menu screens better?

When I burn my DVD the resolution is realy bad on the menu screens and the color is extremely muted and muddy is there a way to fix this?

    a. What material did You use ?
    • video codec (.mov, .mp4, .avi - is no codecs but containers - What's in  them?)
    • audio file format
    • photo file format
    b. What video editor did You use
    • iMovie HD6
    • iMovie'08 or 09 or 11
    • FinalCut (Express/Pro/Pro-X)
    c. 120 minutes - Are You using a DL-DVD ?
Duration is Movie time PLUS MENU. Menu can take 15 minutes or even more.
    iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    d. Frame rate: Don't know - PAL or NTSC or 24fps
Open in QuickTime Player and open Inspector and read (codec and frame rate)
    e. Burn speed: Default
Set it down to x4 - Better over all result.

  • Image size and dpi for iDVD menu custom background?

I created a custom background for my iDVD menu. When showing
on my TV, part of the words and image is cut off on each side, even after adjusting my tv picture between wide screen and standard screen.
What is the correct size and dpi to make a photograph to use as a background
image in the menus? This may have been answered before, so I apologize for posting the same question, if so.

iDVD will try to downsize the image to work, but your TV often will overscan with the result being edges clipped off. The amount of clipping can vary, so the "TV Safe" settings will typically be the center 80-90% of the image. So, if you add a border that makes the image 10-15% larger, that should display the whole image. For example, if you had a 150 dpi image that was 640x480, you could put a 10% border on it so the final image was 704x528.

  • How to get rid of menu screen? Video stalls at menu.

    Hello,
I am submitting a video for a credential I am working on, and the video must be completely unedited with no menu screen. The best I have been able to do so far is to clear out the titles on a black movie screen (working with a theme in iDvD), and add my video footage onto the back of this. But when I try to play the video I have created in a DVD player, the video will stall on the black menu screen and not proceed to my actual footage unless I press STOP, then PLAY. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable to the organization to which I am submitting my video.
How can I get the video to burn straight from iMovie to the DVD burner (LaCie Lightscribe) without any themes or frames? Or, how can I get it to stop getting stuck on the black menu screen?
    Thank you for your help.

In iDVD, you can drag your movie to the box before the menu starts. It will play in full before the menu comes up. You might even be able to totally delete the menu slide once you have done this, but I haven't tried that yet since I usually use a menu.

  • IDVD menu edges are getting clipped

I have been struggling hard to burn a 70 min DVD (movies + slideshow) to play it on my dvd player. It looks like i have to switch to some other DVD burning software (nero) because of not able to solve the problems:
    1. Edges are getting clipped .
I have set the aspect ratio to standard 4:3 and set up the DVD player video to be 4:3 LB.
    2. Whenever I inserted the DVD into my DVD player it displays the menu correctly(clipped edges). I can click and view any of the option's video but after viewing the video if I try to go back to menu its displaying blank screen just highlighting the cursor.
    3. While playing the slideshow (with page flip effect) I am seeing that each photo hangs for a second before getting flipped to next photo.
    4. After viewing the slideshow If I try to go back to menu the display hangs with the last photo and it also overlaps with blank menu screen as in my second problem.
The DVD plays perfectly fine in my Mac and in my Sony VAIO. I have background music for menus and slideshow in my iDVD project. And the video mode is NTSC.
Please help me here..I need to burn these DVDs so that I can carry them to India on this friday.

yes the external dvd player (I call it a set top dvd player). Use your remote control to access the menu / features (you'll have to dig out the instructions maybe and look for different settings like pan and scan vs. letterbox) Set it to letterbox. For example:
The center image is what you need as opposed the one to the bottom right. (Try all available settings to get used to what your options are).
Hope this helps but if not come on back.

  • 1 dead pixel on the screen

I seem to have a dead or stuck pixel on the screen. How do I know if its dead, or if its stuck? Do dead pixels look different from stuck pixels?
Im not to bothered about it as I can hardly see it and I struggle to see it, but it is slightly annoying that you know its there. It looks turquoise colour, but when I put some black over it on the screen, you cant see it.
Also, I have downloaded the stuck pixel fixer and run it for about 20 minutes, and it doesnt seemed to have done anything.
Does anyone suggest what to do? Also, does apple have a pixel policy? Like I said im not to bothered by it, but when you know its there it can get a bit annoying. I have to really look for it to see it though.

Yes thats what I was thinking. Like I said im not to bothered about it and I can hardly see it, but might give them a call and see what they say. Its not acually to bad. I have dead pixels on other things before and they have been much worse. It must be because of the resolution of the screen or something.
I have to say, the one thing I hate the most and is the most annoying thing out of all technology for me is a dead pixel, esspecially when its right in the middle of the screen. This one is just at the top where the program menu bar is, so its not to obvious. Infact, its probably the best place it could have happend really, if it were to happen at all.

  • No iDVD menu on desktop

When I double click on iDVD icon ( in Dock or in Apps folder ) iDVD shows
on Menu Bar at top of screen and window opens with "open project"
"new project" and "open tutorial" choices. But when I select any of those
three, the window goes away but nothing else happens, no iDVD menu
appears. The program doesn't freeze, I can still pull down 'file' and select
"new project" etc, but with same results. I have sucessfully used iDVD 3 or 4
times in the past few months, the last time was about a month ago. This is the first time I have tried it since then. I have tried two things: I put the iDVD preference file from the library folder in the trash. And I copied the iDVD
application from my Mac HD to my internal 200 GB drive and tried opening it
from there. No change. I am a novice so I am flailing around here. Any help?

My standard list of things to do first...
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
    Reboot your Mac.
Yours is certainly a new one!

  • Help-menu screen is off centered

I created a DVD in iDVD 7.0.3. Even though my background image and text was centered squarely in the tv safe viewing area, my menu screen shows up off centered (image all way to the left on tv). Granted I do have a widescreen tv. I tried all settings and it still shows off centered. Any suggestions?

I'd try the DVD on your computer and in another DVD player/TV to see if it's a TV setting or an iDVD issue.

  • Slideshow marred by menu screen inserted between slides

I have a slideshow in my iDVD project that is set to:
    - Fit to audio
    - Droplet transition
    - And in Settings only Duck audio while playing movies
It looks fine with I preview it in iDVD. However, when I burn it the slideshow on the finished DVD has a snapshot of my Menu screen inserted between each and every one of my slides.
What would cause that? How can I fix it?
    Thanks.

Did you burn to disk directly from iDVD?  If so save the project as a disk image, File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.
Open the disk image and launch DVD Player to play your project.  Check the slideshow carefully.  If it plays correctly then the problem lies in the burn process.
Once you've confirmed that the encoding is good and the dvd plays correctly with DVD Player  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Menu Screens - Necessary? Customisable?

    Hello Everyone,
As a recent starter on iMovie, I am now trying to burn a DVD of my film and I have a couple of questions I hope you might be able to answer for me...
    1) Can I burn a disc to 'autoplay' without any menu screen - so that it starts and stops having only played the movie?
2)Am I able to customise a menu e.g. I am able to use photoshop, can I create a graphic and use this instead of the selection available?
I would be grateful for your help!
    Kevin
    iDVD 4.01

    Hi Kevin
    1. I think so partly. That iDVD 4 had a block diagram symbol under the theme window.
Select this and in the left upper most box - drop Your movie project
icon. Now it will autostart. You need to put in a black photo in the theme
window and delete all buttons/texts. Now it will end with black.
    2. Yes make Your photo in .jpg and drop it into the theme window or in the
background well and it will fill the window. Turn off Apple loggo if You like
and tidy the design at Your liking.

  • Losing Resolution on DVD Menu Screen

I have a three 5-minute videos I used to build a DVDSP4 project. For the menu and submenu screens, I used 2 high quality jpeg images, both which were approximately 5-7 megabytes in size. I built the Video_TS folder using DVDSP4, then burned it using Toast Titanium (not sure the version - whichever was released last year). When I view the menu screens on my new iMac, my older television, or on a high definition, the image is pixelated. When I play the videos themselves, their image quality is back to normal. I wonder if the jpeg images are too large for DVDSP to handle? Any other feedback would be appreciated.

DVDs are SD resolution only. So there is no point in working at high resolutions. Photoshop has Presets for the different SD resolutions (PAL, NTSC, 4:3, 16:9, etc.) use one of these to start off with.
DVD SP does a bad job of scaling down graphics. So if you do have high res graphics DVD SP must scale it down to SD res, and its going to do a terrible job of it, so you are best off starting off in SD resolution in Photoshop.
JPEG is a compressed format. You are better off saving in an uncompressed format like TIFF or PNG.
