Pixelated images and overprint preview

I have a few images already inserted in a document which are all in CMYK at 300 dpi. When I zoomed in on them, they appeared just like they did in photoshop, nice and clear.
Last night, I started having trouble with the images appearing pixelated when I add them in. I couldn't find any differences in my workflow in bringing them in, which is the strange part. They are all 300dpi. When I placed some images last night, they appeared pixelated when I zoomed in. Also if I chose Place and just clicked one time, they would appear huge, more than the size they were intended to be, which makes me worry the document may not be setup right, but I cannot find anywhere to adjust the dpi of the document. I have it set for Print, 6x9 size but I dont see where you would modify the dpi for the print setting.
I made a flattened psd image which shows up in InDesign's info window as 300 dpi/cmyk but when I add it, it tried to make the image huge. So I used a different method and scaled the image into the area I wanted it and it still looked very pixelated when I zoomed in.
I looked around and turned on the setting overprint preview and the image cleared up. I am about to be placing a lot of images in this document to finish the book so I am trying to get a better idea of what is going on first and make changes to my document if needed. My question is - If the image doesn't display well when overprint preview is off, do I need to worry if it looks good when its turned on?
Pic 1, overprint preview on. Pic 2, overprint preview off.

Yes I understand this. I was just worried because strangely, other images I had placed before I did this one were not behaving in the same way. I had scaled them down, which is the only difference I could find. I was just very concerned thats all. I know it may have been a simple question but I am finishing a huge project and just about to drop a lot of work on prepping the photos for my book, so I wanted to double check the process very carefully to make sure I wasn't about to repeat a mistake somewhere 100x...

• Is there a way to turn on Proof Colors and Overprint Preview by default?

I prepare graphics mostly for print, so I like to turn on the Proof Colors view and Overprint Preview views. It's a pain to turn these on for each document. Is there a way to make these the default viewing settings in Illustrator CS6?
I tried creating an action to do it, but the Insert Menu Item command in actions causes Illustrator to crash every time, and the help file seems to say that View commands are unavailable to actions. So I'm not sure if that's a bug. Oddly, Photoshop has the very useful File> Scripts> Script Event Manager that let's me turn on Proof Colors (via an action) whenever a document is opened. It works very well. However, Illustrator does not appear to have these options. I found the View> New View options in Illustrator. They let me create a view that turns on Overprint Preview, but absolutely refuse to turn on Proof Colors. So it's the same number of clicks and pointless. Sheesh!
Thanks!

Not sure about Proof Colours but you can select Overprint Preview in the New Document dialogue.
Preview Mode > Overprint.

• AIRasterizeSuite- Rasterize and Overprint Preview

Hi,
I'm using the AIRasterizeSuite to obtain a raster of the entire document which matches what you see in Illustrator.
This is working fine and produces an RGBA raster.  When I select View->Overprint Preview it changes what you see in Illustrator but the result produced by AIRasterizeSuite->Rasterize doesn't change.
How can I get AIRasterizeSuite->Rasterize to respect Overprint settings?
Thanks
Stu.

This is odd, because from some of the things we see in our product, it looks like the Rasterize suite is sometimes lifting directly from the artboard (at least, it seems to us).
If its a colour correction issue, I won't be much help as I don't know anything about that part of the API. Even the rasterize API is -- while familliar -- not something I'm well versed in. I know our stuff works, but we're not interested in details like overprint; we just use it for previews and such so its never been an issue.

• Pixelated images when in preview mode on iMovie, but when I pause it the images become clear. How do I fix this?

I just bought the latest version of iMovie and I am on 10.9.4. I transferred my slideshow from the old iMovie to the new one and almost all the pictures become pixelated when in preview mode. Yet when I pause it, the picture becomes clear. What do I do? It's driving me insane!

After more attemps at cropping Im noticing that the saved version is unzoomed, so if I move the zoom bar just a tad the image becomes instantly sharp. But sadly that doesnt help me because iphoto will only let me save it and post it online as the unsharp pixulated version. Can anyone please help me!

• Color Discrepency between Develop image and Print Preview

Is there any way to alter the color image in the Develop module so that it matches the color of the image in the print preview screen? The colors in the final printed image match those of the ones displayed in the print preview screen and are nothing like the colors I am adjusting in the Develop module. Thanks for the input.

The web preview on windows machines should not match anything indeed. Internet explorer is not color managed at all (shame on you MS). If the web preview matches your print, but the develop screen doesn't it means that you have miscalibrated your screen. Your screen is probably very close to sRGB as many are and you could probably get away with just using sRGB as the screen profile (not recommended for real color management BTW). Anyways, we have seen gobs and gobs of windows color management issues come by here that turned out to be corrupt monitor profiles. As a test, try clearing the profile that you have selected in the monitor's properties dialog (and thereby selecting the default sRGB) and restarting LR. If you still see a difference between the different modules, the monitor profile was corrupt and you should recalibrate.

• Pixelated image and text

Firstly, I'm not a designer hence the question
Can anyone recommend a font that views well on a mobile phone screen.
I have been creating short advertisements as animated gifs to be sent to mobile phones.  The dimensions being 185 px x 165 px which isn't very big.
I found that on some phones the text views very pixelated.  Has anyone got any tips?
Thanks

You might find something on a site like http://www.1001freefonts.com/. They have some simple fonts! Hope it helps!

• How do I save image and text as a single image in InDesign CS5.0?

How do I save an image and text as one image in InDesign CS5.0? NOT 5.5.
I need to save the image as a 72-dpi, jpg file for ePub purposes. I designed a book and am handing it off to someone for ePub.
This is what I've tried:
1) Copied from InDesign, pasted into a PhotoShop doc as a Smart Object. Saved it as 72 dpi jpg, then imported back into ID.
2) Took a screenshot of ID page, placed it in PS, saved as 72 dpi, imported into ID
3) Saved page as a PDF from InDesign, then saved PDF as 72 dpi jpg, then imported into ID.
4) Save page as a PDF from InDesign, placed into Photoshop and saved
as 72 dpi, then imported into ID.
5) Saved as an EPS from InDesign, placed in PS, then imported back to ID.
In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
HELP!!!

In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
Naturally what you did will result in rasterized text. Did you preview with high quality settings?
Are you sure the people who will handle that downstream need pixel images and do you have the exact pixel dimensions needed?
Why did you place the image back in Indesign, by the way?

• Overprint Preview question and another issue...

Hi...
CS4, Win XP.
Overprint Preview question:
The other day i sent a file for printing (poster) in PDF and CS2 formats. For some reason, the printer converted the file to a .tif and then printed. Parts dropped out... Both the PDF and CS2 files looked fine.Description follows:
1/ Background black
2/ Design element over the black (blue lines to form a wave).
3/ Logo in red and white. Plus a line of text in red. And other text in white.
The white of the logo vanished. The red line of text kind of vanished... printed very faintly and only (i think in parts). Printer tried to do a patch job of printing the line separately and pasting... anyway... to cut a long story short, he wanted the final output in .tif. OK...
So, i converted to tif and sure enough... those parts vanished... did a search here and found the solution - view file in Overprint Preview and then in Attributes, turn off the Overprint Fill... so all well...
So, the question is, why does this happen? And, how, do i know in advance that x or y is likely to cause a problem? I have noticed in Bridge that sometimes, parts of a logo or a line of text does not show... but looks fine in AI or Acrobat... now realise the cause, but not the reason.
The other issue...
Same black background(s)... placed Photoshop file/s with a transparent background... Prints fine at the printers (various machines and media) ... But on the laserprinter an HP Color Laser Jet CP1510 series, there's a dark patch around the image (the actual file area).
Again, any ideas?
Cheers...

Hi PrepressPro...
Many thanks for your earlier inputs, but not quite sure where you got the idea that i want someone or anyone to play detective... i've understood the Overprint problem... and moved on. If anything, maybe i was just musing and wondering if any particular action turns on "Overprint Fill"...
Or maybe, i was referring to the second question which has not been resolved yet... Quoting it below for easy reference:

To elaborate, the pix above are product shots which have been cut out and placed on a transparent background... The PS file is then placed in AI CS4 with the object option selected to maintain transparency. The transparent area is printing darker on the printer above. But is fine when sent to commerciqal printers...
Attached is a scan of the problem...

• My background image isn't lining up between my design, preview, and web preview. HELP!

I'm new to using Muse and have spent the afternoon going through online tutorials etc. I understand the fundamentals of adding an image to use as a background, but when I upload the image, it lines up completely different in design, preview, and web preview screens. I've been playing around with different settings but I can't for the life of me figure how to make my preview and web preview look like my design page.
Below are design page, preview page, web preview.
I'm sure there is some fundamental piece I'm missing here as I can't seem to find any threads with the same question being posed. If I had hair, I'd be pulling it our right about now.

1) Resize your image in Photoshop to the maximum width you require for browser display (probably ~1600px, but certainly less than than 2560px) and use Save for Web to create a JPEG of it with the lowest JPEG quality rating you can stand (or your initial page load times will be slow) and import that back into Muse. (The most likely reason the Muse Preview is blank is that this image is too large, in terms of number of total number of pixels.)
2) In the Browser Fill panel in the Fitting options popup menu choose "Scale to Fill". Scale to fill will scale the image up proportionally such that none of the black background shows. If the aspect ratio of the browser window is different than the image, then a portion of the width or height of the image will be cropped. What portion is determined by how the image is aligned using the "Position:" control in the Browser Fill panel.
Because browser window sizes vary (since they're user resizable) the display of the image will be different than what is seen in Muse Design view. However, the letterboxing/pillarboxing effect in the screenshot you provided is due to the Fitting Option being set to "Scale to Fit" rather than "Scale to Fill".

Spotlight lists items and shows preview images.  BUT what about showing the path/location address of an item in my computer.
Especially important if I've put the item in the wrong folder and what to locate it without multi-steps. iMac OS X 10.5 was more useful.
Old OSX Spotlight function automatically displayed path/location within the machine:  e.g. desktop/folder/sub-folder/item.
Can I make Spotlight show the path?

Press option-command and the path is displayed at the bottom of the little preview window.  Press command-return and the enclosing folder opens.

Sorry I have only a german version , so don't know what your menu will show.

• New LG Monitor Screen Image Keeps Shifting a few pixels left and right / goes into power save mode

I just purchased a new LG Computer Monitor from Best Buy today and hooked it up to my PowerMac computer. Shortly after setting it up, the entire screen image started sporadically shifting left and right a few pixels. And then, at seemingly random times, it'll shut itself down, going into power save mode. I checked the cables to make sure they were secure and they seem to be. Could there be some sort of interference that's causing it? Or would it be the graphics card? My computer is only a couple years old. Please help!

Do you have another computer you can plug the monitor into to test?

• Images with Preview and the Scroll Tool

Preview has been my favorite application for openning images and PDFs on the fly becuase of its quick launch time, simple interface, and key-command functionality. However, when viewing image files, some of its functions are not available. Only the select (cropping) tool isn't greyed out. I would very much like to be able to use the scroll (pan) tool as it is how I'm using to seeing large scale documents and plans.
Does anyone know how to make this happen?

Hi Dan,
Yes my 'Scroll Tool' under Tools is greyed out too. I checked in Preview Help and came up with this:
Mac OS X 10.4: Scrolling around an image in Preview
In Mac OS X 10.4, you can scroll around an image in Preview easily in several different ways (scrolling is only possible when the image doesn't completely fit inside the Preview window):
Hold down the space bar and your mouse button at the same time, then scroll at will.
If you have an Apple Mighty Mouse or a third-party mouse with a scroll wheel, you can use the mouse's wheel to scroll around. To scroll horizontally with a third-party mouse, hold the Shift key while scrolling.
Use your keyboard's arrow keys. (On my iBook I had to hold the alt/option key for this to work, then it only did so slowly)
Drag the scroll bar on the bottom or side of the Preview window.
On some PowerBooks, you can use the trackpad for scrolling.
Hope this helps.
