Pixelated Playback

How come my image looks pixelated on when i use the full screen video playback.
I imported regular 30p shot footage from a dvx100b into fcp at the NTSC easy setup. The image looks fine in the canvas and the viewer while they are smaller but when i try to view it through the full screen video playback it loses resolution a lot....am i doing something wrong.
I appreciate any suggestions

sorry been gone for a minute....i was just viewing multiple projects through the digital desktop preview cinema raw and all of the footage looks fine...so it is not the camera....however on my SD footage when i view raw the frame is much smaller than the monitor....and the HD footage actually when raw is too big for the monitor so i had to view that through the digital desktop preview-full screen and it was fine....
so after that and having just read your post im left with the puzzle of how to show this (SD) project with as minimal resolution loss as possible....
your dvd solution seems to be the most economical for me at this time...how about settings...is their a setting in fcp or compressor to convert for viewing on a regular NTSC or well now I have HDTV...oh god ....help me out here...lol

  • 720 p50 MXF doesn't playback on full quality

I had troubles with log&transfer so I bought Raylight for mac and it worked just fine until...
I have (shot with panasonic hpx555) DVCPRO HDi50 clips, so I adjusted the sequence setting based on these clips and some slow mo clips 720p50 that I'm using on the same sequence. When on pause the quality of the 720p50 clips is perfect but on playback the video looks like its pixelated.
I tried these slow mo clips on a new sequence and adjusted the settings thinking it will solve the problem but it didn't. I tried different settings on raylight but stil getting the same pixellated playback.
Do You have any information why wouldn't these clips (DVCPRO HD 720 p50) playback on full quality.
P.S. I apologize for threadjack, not on purpose!

Where is this footage stored? Faster drives take care of this. But regardless,

Shane's Stock Answer #2: Blurry playback
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL BROADCAST MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
The Canvas shows you what happens after the codec you are working with has been applied. The Viewer shows you the material in its native format. Once you drop the footage from the Viewer into the timeline, it inherits the attributes of the sequence. If it is a DV sequence, the footage will render out as DV.
    1. Disable overlays on the Canvas.
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline).
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or broadcast monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

  • Playback Quality on HD LCD TV is same as Canvas - Pixelated.

    Hey Guys,
Can anyone help me here - I recently purchased a 19" HD ready TV for full screen playback through FCP 6.
I used a Mini DVI to DVI adaptor from the Mac then a DVI to HDMI to go into the TV.
Everything works fine & is in sync, except the quality of the TV image is exactly that of the Canvas, a poor pixelated proxy version.
Is there anyway I can fix this to get crisp & pristine playback on the TV?
    Not color just image quality.
I've tried with both HD & DV and both are the same, I'm banging my head here!
    Cheers
    Franco

All you are displaying on your little HD tv is the same image as the Canvas.
If you want to really monitor HD/HDV you need something like the MXO, Kona LH or an Intensity card to convert the material to display on the TV.
    good luck.

  • Quicktime Playback is Pixelated

    Hi,
I have a client on a 1.67 PB 17" send me a quicktime file the other day that was extremely pixelated. This is a reel that they have done from one of their advertising companies.
I played the original file back from the website, and it played fine.
I had her try to playback some movie trailers from apple.com/quicktime, and they played fine on her machine as well.
Trying to figure out why she'd be getting this poor quality when doing playback. Other quicktime movies on her machine do not have this problem.
She is running the latest version of Quicktime.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    This part had me confused:
"I have a client on a 1.67 PB 17" send me a quicktime file the other day that was extremely pixelated."
It made me think that you had a client send you a file that was extremely pixelated. If the only combination that is causing a problem is that particular movie when viewed on your client's computer and online, and any other movies play fine on her computer, and the problem file plays fine on your computer, I would double check what she means by pixelated.
Does the file play ok for her when it's local and in QuickTime Player? If it does it makes me wonder if the issue is that the movie is breaking up due to a bad Internet connection. That wouldn't be pixelated, but it would be fairly broken up.
What is the data rate of the movie?

  • Video Playback on 3GS has a row of dancing pixels.

My husband and I download mp4's from an afforable paysite and have been doing so for almost a year very successfully. We share the same movies. His play fine on his iPod touch but since I purchased the iPhone 3GS, some of the new movies I sync have a row of pixels on the bottom 1/4 of the screen, that flash, stutter, dance etc. throughout the entire movie. The top 3/4 of the movie playback is fine, clear.I have a 16G with plenty of memory to spare. The audio is clear and the timing is accurate. Also the movies play fine on my desktop eMac.
    What I've tried:
Doing absolutely no surfing during syncing.
Turning push and fetch off on my iPhone during syncing.
Completely erasing and re-downloading and re-syncing from scratch.
Thanks in advance for the help!

it could be because the 3gs has a slightly different media player then the touch or 3g. (this is just based on other posts i've read where people that had videos that played fine on a 3g now have wierd stuff going on when played in the 3gs.) you might need to reconvert the files to something the 3gs can play. i have used the 'videora iphone 3g converter' (there is also a 3gs converter) available for free from www.videora.com to see if that helps.

I have problems viewing video (also with iTunes Music Videos): All Videos show little flashing singel pixels (not blocks) and unregular beeps an "electrical" sound.

iPod 30 GB is brandnew (1 day) / Software updated to 1.1.1

    No Problem
Just wanted to make sure you did both.
On your iPod, try going to Videos-->Video Settings-->TV Out-->On
Play the video (the video will not play, you will just hear the audio).
Now pause the video (after about 10 seconds). Go back to the settings and change TV Out to Off.
Play another video and see if that one works.
If it still won't work, and you have reset and restored, your iPod may need service...

You could also exchange the iPod for another one from the store where you bought it.

Is that true for all GoPro video formats or just some of the newer (higher resolution/frame rate) one?  The GoPro has several different pre-sets and I typically like to get as much resolution as possible for my source and for highspeed subjects like sports I try to use higher framerates as well.  Are you suggesting that I convert the source files to Cineform avi and then edit those resulting AVI's in CS6?

  • Choppy playback/pixelating but previews and plays on compter fine.

I have been hunting through the forum answers but..........my project has been edited/saved multiple times,(trying to get a successful burn!). It is from iMovieHD, runs56 minutes with 26 scenes. There are a few iTune tracks on a like number of clips and finally there are titles at each chapter break. No chapters within the first or last clip.
Consistently, the skipping/freezing/pixalating tends to occur towards the last 1/4 of the burnt DVD.
Too large at 10.1 GB, if attempting to share as QT Full Quality but apparently is only 3.7 GB when shared to iDVD.
An ealier post suggested that- "Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)"
When I open iDVD 5.0.1 and try to get into the VIDEO_TS there are multiple folders and none that I can figure out how to "play/view".
    I am using Verbatim-R. I have tried:
-waiting until the "status" bar indicates "done" and then burned using the iDVD burn button
    -deleted the com.Apple.iDVD.plist file
    -re-booted
-thrown away a stack of "coasters"
-spent too many hours reconstructing the "project" with it's drop zones
-family is getting tired of listening to me state "This time it will work"
-saved as Disc image and burned from Disc Utilities (but didn't wait until the status bar had finished. Just found out about that suggestion.)
    So wise ones.
Should I wait for the "status"bar to show done and then save as disc image and try that again?
    Haven't yet used Apple-R DVD, should I?
    Thanks all

Consistently, the skipping/freezing/pixalating tends to occur towards the last 1/4 of the burnt DVD.
Could be media or burn speed isues.

Sounds like the 10.1 GB file is your DV Stream content out of iMovie - this isn't designed to be played in DVD players. iDVD takes this content and MPG-2 encodes it down to something that DVD players will play.
"Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)"
iDVD ISN'T a DVD Player application! You should have Apple's DVD Player application in your Applications folder - THIS is what you want to use to playback the image file.

  • Pixelation on playback

I cut together a short intro scene that was fairly complicated--6 video tracks overlapping at various points. The idea is to have a small picture of each person I need to show move into a spot on a larger background, a total of eight will be shown but no more than two at once. Problem is, the video comes out very poor. The titles and background look sharp but the video clips of the people talking are very grainy (and not just aliasing). For both text and video I used the motion controls in FCP (not the Motion program) so I don't see why there should be a difference. I think the problem is in the render because when I look at unrendered footage it's very clear, as it is when I watch it from the clips I imported into the bin. When I print to video and watch on an NTSC monitor, the problem arises.
Am I on the right track thinking it has to do with rendering or does shrinking the video clips necessarily compromise quality for some reason? Will the Quick Time Pro fix I've seen on this forum help and, if so, doesn't QTP come bundled with FCP (it's not on my computer...)? Could it be a hard drive space issue? Any help at all would be awesome. Thanks.
PS - All the import/sequence/etc settings are correct.

Had you not already done a print to video and looked at it through an NTSC monitor I would have suggested Shane's Stock answer #2.
I've included it at the bottom just in case you didn't actually render eveything or disable overlays and they are the culprits.
At this point I would suggest a couple things.
First try Exporting your movie as a QuickTime movie (NOT Quicktime conversion) and make it a self contained movie. This will bring all your video tracks down to one and we can trouble shoot that as a problem. Then open a new FCP project import the QT Movie you exported , drop it into the timeline and then print to video. See if it makes a difference.
If that doesn't work then my next suggestion may then be to trash preferences, repair permissions and re-boot your computer. And I only offer this becuase I have to run out to a client right now and won't be back to check your result until later tonight.
Hopefully someone else might assist you in the meanwhile.
Here's Shane's Stock Answer I referred to earlier:

  • Why do my photos look pixellated during playback on a TV?

Still using iLife '08 but have noticed recently that photos I use in slideshows (whether imported from iPhoto or Aperture) look as if they are slightly out of focus (or pixellated) when played back on a plasma/LCD television screen.
After building a slideshow on iDVD and then playing it on my cinema display the images look razor sharp but this is not the case after the DVD has been burned and is being played back on a domestic DVD player and a television screen.
I'm pretty sure this is to do with the difference in resolution between the cinema display and the television screen but I am wondering if there is/are a setting (or settings) in either iPhoto, iDVD or Aperture that I should be using to improve the quality of the images when they are displayed on the television screen.
I'd be grateful for any comments, ideas or suggestions.
    Kind regards,
    Cliff
    Brighton, UK

I've noticed a very similar thing, again with iLife '08. I've created movies in iMovie and exported them as Quicktime files and to the Media Browser. They appear fine when playing them in Quicktime but appear pixellated when playing them in iDvD preview mode, this happens for both large and medium formats.
Look forward to hearing if anyone knows anything about it.

  • All video content pixelated during playback.

Issue: All video content (Trailers, Podcasts, TV shows stored locally, TV shows & music videos streamed from iTunes) are pixelated. HDMI Audio is unaffected as are the AppleTV menus, screen savers and photo slideshows.
    *Troubleshooting steps taken:*
    Checked HDMI cable connection.
Checked HDMI cable with another device.
Checked various types of video content.
Ran diagnostics on AppleTV. No errors found.
    Restored AppleTV to factory conditions.
    Upgraded to latest firmware.
    Synced content locally.
I have no idea what else to do. Has anyone ran into this situation? What, if anything, could I do to resolve this issue?
I have used my AppleTV without this issue ever happening before as recently as a week ago. The content that I was attempted to watch was purchased from the Apple iTunes store.

Since another device worked with the same cable and port on my Vizio TV I have, the only thing could have been the AppleTV. So I decided to go to the Apple Store. 45 minutes after unplugging the AppleTV I was at the Apple Store. Then after another 40 minutes of waiting for the Genuis, my AppleTV was plugged in and worked perfectly.
The only thing I can think of is the heat from the AppleTV always being on affected the graphics card. Let's see if it happens again.

  • Graphics are Pixelated During a Rendered Playback

I am editing 720x480 DVCPro-NTSC footage in 720x480. I have an intro that is all graphics. When I play back, the graphics are noticeably pixelated...even after it is rendered. Is there a filter or setting I should apply to correct the problem?

I think I might have solved my own problem. I added a De-interlace filter to my logos and text and they look better. The De-interlace was set at "Flicker Filter Max".
Does anyone know why this problem happens?
I'm editing the video in 720x480 and a video in 1280x1080. They use the same logo that I built. I built the logo in a 1280x1080 sequence. The logo looks great in 1280x1080, but pixcelated in the 720x480 (mainly around the edges). Any answers to that?

  • How to edit with non-interlaced playback - for square pixel art?

I'm working with PNG sequenced images from Flash. I'm compositing in AE and I export an QT movie in "Animation" compression, 100% quality. The exported movie is as 'clean' as a Flash swf. This becomes my source movie for Premiere CS3.
When I bring my scenes to edit in Premiere CS3 I can't figure how to set up the project so the the final out-put is non-interlaced. I want the quality of the final movies to be as clean (non-interlaced) as my source movies.
I would like to work in non-DV format since my source movies are made from square pixel art (Flash & Photoshop). This process works great in Premiere 5.1, is it possible in CS3?
I work on PC - XPpro

    Jim,
Thank you for responding to my post. My question is can I edit and output in Non-DV format (non-interlaced video) with CS3?
I mentioned using Flash because I wanted it to be known I was starting with square pixel art. My final goal is to make DVD movie. I use Premiere to edit the scenes. I work in animation, some traditional hand drawn, painted in Photoshop, and some Flash generated. My end results needs to be a high resolution QT movie.
I've been using Premiere 5.1 and for years (Premiere 4 before that). I would like use Premiere CS3, but I need to export without the interlaced video. Can this be done in Premiere CS3?

  • Stuttery, Pixellated visual playback

I have posted this problem before and no one seemed to know how to fix it. I thought i would wait for an itunes/Quicktime update but that did not solve the problem so I am posting again.
When i try to watch a video file through quicktime or a video podcast via itunes the Visual part of the playback stutters, pauseing for seconds before showing the next image which may or may not run normally for a second or so before doing the same. Often the transition from one image to the next causes the image to pixellate. The sound however is perfect throughout.
What is confusing though is that i can watch video files on websites such as gametrailers.com that use quicktime and they play perfectly.
Having looked at the Show Movie Inspector panel in Quicktime, the counter reading does not run sequentially, it seems to run as if being in fast forward skipped 20-40 seconds at a time.
I have tried everything i can think of and that has been suggested to me and the problem still persists.
My drivers are up to date, Quicktime is up to date, Quicktime Alternative suffers the same problem, I have tried uninstall/reinstall.
I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7900, running Windows Vista.

I have found something of interest, http://www.geekzone.co.nz/hadders/2273 is a forum thread of someone having a similar problem that he linked to Intel RAID array. I have no idea what that is, i have an AMD Athlon and a single unpartitioned internal HDD and an external one.
But the second post made a suggestion of running the file from an external HDD, which i did and which solved the problem to an extent.
It is now a task of finding out what is causing .mov files played from my internal HDD to play in this manner. It used to play them perfectly fine untill a number of months ago.
