Pixelated reds in MPEG-2 (and most other) exports

This is a revisitation of an issue I identified over a year ago and I still don't have a resolution. I am going to cross-post this to the Quicktime forum as well as that of FotoMagicko. I would do so at Photo-to-Movie as well if they only had such a resource. I am desperate for new ideas or techniques to try. I would be pleased to no end to be told of a simple error in my process, but I'm beginning to suspect that Quicktime is broken.
The original and still biggest problem is heavily pixelated reds in MPEG-2 movies. Turns out it exists in most other QT formats as well.
I'll step you through the workflow and then discuss observations gleaned from a number of experiments:
We start with hi-res photos and render them as motion slideshows. We have done this in iPhoto, FotoMagiko and Photo-to-Movie all with the same results. All of these applications utilize quicktime as their rendering engine and so are really irrelevant as a possible source of the problem (as will be verified later). QT does not support export directly to MPEG-2 and so an intermediary file format is required. More on this later.
The rendered QT file is then dropped into Compressor and rendered as 2-pass 8 Mbit max VBR (have also tried 8 Mbit CBR with no improvement). The resulting MPEG-2 is then imported into DVDSP4 for authoring.
The resulting DVDs all show heavy pixelation in reds.
Well the problem is out of gamut reds in your source files, obviously I hear you say.
OK, so back to the beggining - this time run all images through Photoshop's NTSC Colors filter and rerun. Same problem. Have also done this AND converted to NTSC color space - no joy. I have even ASSIGNED the NTSC color space to the image instead of converting - this munged up the colors to know end, but also did not fix the problem.
Well, maybe MPEG-2 is just not capable of handling even all of NTSC's colors, right?
Seems unlikely, but maybe. What about this then - of all of the Quicktime codecs to which to export the slideshow movie, only 1 of them produces an intermediary file that does not ALSO show the pixelated reds - the Animation codec (not Apple Intermediate, not Component, not MPEG-4, not eve Uncompressed at either 8 OR 10 bit!). Again, these are with source images whose gamut has ostensibly been reigned in to legal colors via Photoshop.
Well at least there's ONE intermediate that produces a flawless export - just use that
Ok, except that once Compressor is done with it (and I've tried every reasonable combination of parameters), the pixelation is back.
I've seen broadcast video showing these colors (or a representation of them) without this kind of artifact - how is it accomplished? About the only thing I havn't tried is importing it into Final Cut and trying to figure out their chromometer thingy. How would this differ from the NTSC Colors filter in Photoshop. That still wouldn't explain what appears to be a problem with the majority of Quicktime's codecs with saturated reds...
Any help, advice, or even guesses are appreciated.

The 1st and second links are pretty useful. It describes how chroma (colour) is stored a lower resolution to luminance (black and white) to save space. Photos don't employ this type of colour compression, which is why they look so different when out in a video codec.
By going via NTSC DV, which is 4:1:1, to DVD MPEG2 which is 4:2:0, you end with a combination of the worst aspects of each, namely 4:1:0, which is why the MPEGS look so bad. However, you will always be limited to some chroma down-sampling with most codecs.
Bringing the photos into FCP will give you more control - but will probably be a royal pain to get them to do what you want - I would exhaust all possibilities with the packages you are already using.
What is your final out put (sorry - I skimmed you post) - DVD ? Have you exported to that and seen how it looks ? It might be okay.

    What is "wrong" with your Apple ID?
    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

    I am trying to edit some gameplay footage I captured using "AverMedia Game Capture HD", but whenever I import the media (at 1080i),
    There are pixels that hang on the video player, mostly when the camera is turning left to right,
    and on occasion, some random color blurs that bloom out of nowhere.
    I attached a image so you can see what it looks like:
    Here is what the video looks like after it is rendered and exported.
    Along with the visual pixels, it also displays horizontal lines. (possibly due to my export settings, I was in a hurry just to test it)
    Both the capture device and final cut pro x are upgraded to the latest firmware/updates.
    I am using HD AC Component cables (blue green red) both for in and out connections between ps3 - cap device - tv.
    The capture device automatically records files to mpeg-4.
    The resolution of the tv, and recorded footage is in 1080i (1920 × 1080) and the quality looks great when I play it through quick time or any other media players:
    Any tips or info? I have been using Final Cut pro  x since it was released. I am not a professional but I have used it for some very important jobs thorugout the year, but I am really stumped with this.

    Alright, lets get the good news out first:
    Converting the file definitely fixed the pixel issues.
    However, there where frequent "blips" of some frames that disturbed the video.
    Also, the converter created a 5GB file that was originally around 300MB!!
    It put a serious load on importing, rendering and transcode analysis, however the video played back smoothly, it would be perfect despite the large file size and frequent frame glitches.
    This is all due to my lack of knowledge in video property conversion.
    At this point, I feel that I am asking for too much, but I am really stumped...
    I can try so many possibilities, but this would save me allot of time if I could get the help:
    What converter settings should choose to have the optimal video file that,
    plays back smoothly,
    plays In HD,
    is compatible with fcp,
    and can still stay moderately low on file size?
    Here is the current info on the RAW video file:

    (slight improvemnt, but extremely high file size, and still has some frame glitches)

    EDIT:
    For reference, This is the new glitch issue I see:

    It seems to be replying a previous frame in the video.
    Also, the horozontal lines do not show during live playback, only when the play head is paused, or when scrubbing.

  • Contacts and most other options in Message Center are not editable

    So I try to add, edit, or delete a Contact or a Group and it tries to save and then responds "We were unable to perform your request. Please try again."  Super frustrating.  Any ideas?  Win 7 64-bit , IE 9. 

    Sorry to hear about the problems with  adding a contact or group. I suspect this is a browser issue. To verify, please either try using a different browser or setting your browser to compatibility mode. Please go into your browsers "Tools" menu and click to turn on "compatibility view". It should allow you to sort after doing that. If you do not wish to enable compatibility view every time you want to sort,  Go into compatibility view settings and add the site www.verizon.com to the list.

    I have intermittent problems with a Web site not loading properly (rather than a gray background with pictures and clickable captions linking to news stories, a page consisting only of text and hyperlinks loads).     I had this problem. I fixed it by right clicking on the website page and found I had inadvertently ticked "block images from this website". Uncheck this and it's fine!

  • Google apps like Gmail and most other apps don't work while using wi-fi connection

    Will Blackberry apps ever be developed to be configurable to use a wi-fi connection? I would assume there is great demand for such. There are very few places I go that do not have wi-fi and I have been able to save a tremendous amount of money by going without a data plan. I got an unlocked BB Curve 8900 ( at full price) and then bought T-Mobile's prepaid 1000 minutes.
    I'm using traditional Internet addresses (like Gmail) that usually have a mobile rendering for email and information.  I am always seeing other apps that would be convenient to have; though they seldom work properly. They always open Browser instead of Hotspot Browser, the one you must use to go to the Internet via the same kind of access that laptops and notebooks use. 
    If I let the phone go where it wants; I usually end up downloading and installing an app; which then won't work. To get what works, I Go To a specific Internet address like I would using the address bar in a full browser running on a computer.
    Does anyone know how to configure these apps to use Hotspot Browser?I figured out how to get my Curve to default to Hotspot Browser; so it opens first when I click the "globe" icon in the BB menu; but this hasn't worked from various apps I've tried (Facebook, Google Maps, Google Talk, etc.).
    Perhaps if I download a different browser? Like Bolt or Opera?
    Also, I think I should be able to use Google Voice with my Curve; but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.
    I don't have the use of the GPS capability - I'm thinking that is not possible - am I correct? The same with SMS?
    Can anyone advise me about what others have been able to do and how?

    You don't say which BB you have or which carrier you use or your geographical location.
    What you are asking for is full BB functionality without paying for it. I can't see RIM doing that somehow. They rely on carriers distributing the product so would be shooting themselves in the foot.
    I've no doubt you feel pretty good having saved "a tremendous amout of money" but I suspect it costs you to do so. Browsing by Wi-Fi doesnt eat into data allowance meaning you have the full data allowance available when you are out and about. Oh, and you can use Hotspots.
    The BB service means you don't log-in to email accounts. Emails are pushed on to the BB and for up to 10 different email accounts.You can read 10 emails in the time it takes your browser just to load the log-in page.
    You can also download apps that work and many of them are free.
    You can download and use whatever browser you want, it still won't get you round the problem. No BB data plan means seriously limited functionality.
    Voice dialling and GPS may not be supported by your device. SMS will be.
    In terms of money, my friend was paying £20 payg to O2 on an ordinary mobile. We located a violet 8520 on Orange UK with 500mb data allowance for £9.85 per month. So who's saving money?

    I just tried bringin the Animation codec into FCP and running the clip through the Effects>Video Filters>Color Correction>Broadcast Safe and then exporting to Compressor for encoding. The RGB Parade scope did change to reflect the application of the filter. If anything the reds look a bit MORE pixelated.
    Its entirely possible that I'm misusing this fiilter as I don't know FCP, so please advise if that's the case.

    I've had it for less than a year and noticed a few weeks ago that it had a red dot on the center of the screen. About a week ago I noticed another dot, a white one, right next to it. I've never dropped it and even went out of my way to buy a decent case to keep it safe. I spent over 200$ on my 4Gen iPod Touch it and I'm very concerned that these dots will spread across my screen.     I had restored my iPhone 5 to factory settings and that cleared the problematic "Other" problem.  Flash forward a couple weeks and the problem has once again resurfaced.
    I tried updating iTunes and iOS to the newest versions and the problem still persists.
    I'm officially ready to switch to Windows Phone or Android now...

    Used - 1.82 GB
    VM size - 198GB
    The page ins and page outs have 0 bytes/sec in the parenthesis even though the numbers are so high.

    You difinately need more ram. 2gb is the bare minimum to run just the Lion OS, anything extra will slow your Mac to a crawl. Upgrade to 8gb from either Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/

    If you registered your Lightroom with Adobe after you installed it, you can log into your Adobe account and get your serial number from your account.

    Which operating system are you using?
    Some filters like Filter>Sketch>Stamp need to have two different colors for the Foreground and Background set in the toolbox.
    Press the D key to set the default toolbox color swatches to Black and White and then try the Stamp filter.
    If your using mac os x 10.9 or 10.10, then some of the filters under Filter>Sketch will crash pse 11
    They are Filter>Sketch>Comic, Graphic Novel and Pen and Ink
    Otherwise resetting the pse11 editor preferences might resolve the crashing.
    Go to Photoshop Elements Editor(Edit)>General, click on Reset Preferences on Next Launch and then restart the pse 11 editor

    On another note, the iPhone tells me that it's ''busy'' when opening a photo on the computer.
    (I tried restarting my PC, connecting via another USB port, importing using PhotoStream, etc...)

    Are you using the front or rear camera? When you say they are low quality, are you referring to file/pixel size, or how the picture looks? As far as upside down, how are you holding the phone? Older versions of Windows have issues reading the Metadata from the pictures and will not display the same.

    I went to download the Yahoo! app on my iPod and it said I had to download the iOs 6.1.3 to get the app. I did so and I also dowloaded the newest iTunes on my computer. I had all my pictures and apps backed up on iCloud. After the update I checked my pictures and they were all gone. I also looked at my apps and most of them are gone and for a couple of free apps that I made purchases within, the information was erased. For example, I had the free version of the Harry Potter Spells app. Inside the app I bought the spell packages and when I got the game back on my iPod after the update, the information was erased. That's not fair especially because I paid for those and iFeel as though Apple has ripped me off. (Please pardon my pun.) But what I really want to know is if there is someway to retrieve them?

    Restore from iCloud Backup step by step
    1. Erase all contents and settings (Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings)
    2. You'll be asked twice to confirm
    3. You'll see Apple logo and progress bar
    4. You'll see a big iPad logo on screen
    5. Configuration start
    6. Set language
    7. Set country
    8. Enable Location Service
    9. Select network, enter password and join network
    10. You'll be given 3 options (a) Setup as New iPad (b) Restore from iCloud Backup (c) Restore from iTune Backup
    11. Selected Restore from iCloud Backup
    12. You'll be required to enter Apple ID and Password
    13. Agree to Terms and Conditions
    14. Select Backup file
    15. You'll see progress bar
    16. Red slider will appear; slide to unlock; step #1 to #16 is fast
    17. Pre-installed apps will be restored first
    18. Message: Purchased apps and media will now be automatically downloaded
    19. You'll see a pageful of apps with Waiting/Loading/Installing
    20. When the restore process is complete, your device will restart. You should connect the device to iTunes to sync data not contained in the backup (such as music, videos, apps, and so on).
