Pixelated square at start up!!!

I am having trouble with start up. Upon start up, chimes work, apple appears, then it turns to a pixelated square in the center of the screen. I have tried all suggestions. PRram reset, power management reset, squeezing the computer...nothing seems to work. This computer was given to a friend of mine, who turned to me for help. He did not have the original disk1 only disk 2. He did not know the password, which was a problem. It was working but, the clock was set wrong. So, I took my OSX disk ( 10.3) and it would NOT restart using that disk as a boot. So, I did the T start up and used my powerbook to do it. I successfully ( 2x) installed Panther, but, it will not start up. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. We really need of this ibook to work in order to help run our new opera company. Thanks, Thomas

Thomaz,
Actually, we did not erase and format. We simply installed over the old system.
So there's no telling what is on that hard drive. Even if it won't boot, if you're in target mode you can erase the hard drive using disk utility.
This Because the computer would not start up on the OSX bootable Disk1.... I could not understand why it would not boot up on the Panther DISK 1.
Is that a retail version of OS 10.3.2? Black with silver lettering?
If it's a machine specific installer, gray with white lettering, it's only meant for your PowerBook.
Target mode could work but it would need to be the retail or correct installer for the particular iBook in question or very close to it.

  • Weird pixelated squares in Safari & on screensaver

    Hey there,
I just bought the new Macbook Pro about 2 months ago and it's fabulous... Up until a few days ago when I started noticing when I open Safari and it goes to the Home Page (where all your fave websites are listed) some of them were really distorted and pixelated with large squares, then when you click to open a page, the same distortion pops up for a few seconds then fixes itself.
I then noticed today it's doing the same thing on my screensaver (my screensaver is an album of pictures in collage format) and when I attempted to take a screen shot of how Safari looks it just uploaded as a black screen on photobucket.
I have NO IDEA what is going on, I've turned it off and on again and I checked Firefox to see if the same thing happened (it didn't) but then I realised it's happening with my screen saver too, so it can't be the internet server.
    Help please
[EDIT]: Just noticed the 3 screen shots I took of Safari and Google have changed since I last opened them in Preview, now they all look the same - I checked other images I'd saved and they were fine, then opened the Safari screen shot and it had parts of the other pictures, then closed and re-opened it and now they all match... WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!

No worries - It was a problem in Safari. I've swapped over to Firefox and no problems at all: Screen saver is fine and so is page loading

  • Distorted video on youtube & colored pixels/ squares appearing

My problem is when viewing videos on Youtube using safari or firefox I keep getting small colored squares moving across the video whilst its playing and also sometimes the video becomes distorted in places. This happend a few weeks back and then stopped then this week the same thing began happening. I don't think it's anything to do with youtube as I asked around and no-one else had the problem. I tested watching video on other sites and the same thing happend with the colored squares moving within the video frame.
Also in recent days I was using flickr and on some photos I viewed there was a section of the photo with a large colored block covering it. I could view the image, but there was a section covered in yellow or green. I refreshed the photo and it was gone. There were also thin strips of distorted image on some photos like the pixels were missing. It seems to be a problem with images and video. I hope my explaination was fairly clear. I might include a photo if not.
I have searched the discussion boards and nothing comes up. I also watched a DVD yesterday and view quicktime videos and images on my computer and nothing happend with them, its seems its just when viewing images/ video online with safari that it happens.
    Any clues?
    Thanks in advance.

Further to my earlier post I have done some more digging and noticed that xlr8yourmac.com also had a couple of reports on this.

Today I got the same pink lines but that was after my Mac Pro had been on half the day. I definitely believe that it is a heat issue with the Radeon X1900 XT card. I managed to take several screen grabs of the pink/green artifacts, so that is definitive proof that it is not a monitor or monitor cable issue.
I did clean what dust there was from the X1900 XT cooling fan yesterday, so even dust free I still got a problem. When the artifacts appeared I wasn't actually doing anything very strenuous on my Mac other than run DEVONagent, which may have increased the CPU load, but not the load on the graphics card.
There is mention of it possibly being related to the 10.4.9 upgrade, but I did not see the problem until I upgraded to 10.4.10.
I have now reinstalled Mac OS X and upgraded to 10.4.8 to see whether the problem resurfaces in the next few days. If it does, then I'll be onto Apple for a new card as my Mac Pro is only 4 months old.

Hi all has anyone else experienced a strange whie shape, square on thw white screen on start up just before it goes onto the login screen. since up grading to mountain lion OS X 10 ive had nothing but problems.

  • G5 Grey screen & flashing white square after start-up & unresponsive key.

After pressing the start button on my G5, instead of the usual blue start-up screen I got a grey screen with a small white square with a blue earth-globe, that flashed on & off. This eventually turned into a small folder with a finder face alternating with a ? mark. 10 attempts (over 1/2 hr) at switching on & off got no-where, so I left the grey screen going and after 10 minutes the G5 suddely went into the blue screen loading mode & then my chosen desktop picture. All apps seem to be OK.
I have not had this experience with my 2 year old flat panel G4 & I am wondering if I should do something remedial to prevent this happening again? The question is What? I am relectant to turn the G5 off in case I get a re-run so will leave it to sleep pro tem.
I have had this Mac for about 5 months from new & it has behaved itself until now. I am a novice so would welcome any help.
    Thanks - Terry Wallis.

    Terry,
Personally, I have always put the computer to sleep as I have been told this is less stressful for the hardware than a restart from a cold shutdown. I haven't had any hardware problems with this iMac G3 since new in 2001 so I tend to agree with this practice.

  • Random pixelated squares in windows

Was hard to come up with the right words to describe my issue, but a picture is worth a thousand words:
    http://macguild.org/images/artifacts.jpg
That screenshot is an Amazon shopping page, and you'll notice those ugly squares sprinkled all over the window.  I think it's important to note that if I move the window, the rectangles move with it.
The placement and shading of the squares is random, the colors seem to mostly lean towards teal, but other colors show up, so it's pretty much random too. The windows they show up in appears to be random as well.  For instance, in Safari, I might have 10 windows open, but the artifacts may only show up in 6 or 7 of them.  Same for other applications.
Originally, it happened on both of the displays on my Mac Pro.  However, then one of the displays just died, except the display works on other machines, so it seems my card no longer supports two displays (was fine before).  Now I'm hobbling along on a single display with all these artifacts.
    Things that I've tried:
    1. Rebooting (this makes the problem go away for a few hours, but it always returns).
    2. Fixing permissions (tried several times, always says it's fixing permissions on this and that, but the next time I run it, it's telling me it's fixing them again, as if they weren't really fixed before).
    3. I tried reseating memory.
    4. I keep the case open to get better air circulation (doesn't seem like the fan ever really kicks on).
    5. I've zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC.
Recently, I started noticing a new symptom, my internet was going out.  And just yesterday, it went out and wouldn't come back.  It is wired ethernet, so I switched to wireless, and now internet is working again (guessing there is now a problem with the ethernet port).
I'm at my wits end, more than once nearly bought a new Mac Pro to just end the suffering.  Considered buying a new graphics card, but I'm thinking that something else is at work here.  I'm hoping I can get some ideas here.
    Mac Pro (2) 2.4 Ghz quad-core
    32 GB RAM
    OS 10.6.8
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB VRAM
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The two most common errors that I see in the Event Viewer are:
    1) ACPI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal PCI Operation Region (0x41c), Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
    2) \Device\ACPIEC: The embedded controller (EC) hardware didn't respond within the timeout period. This may indicate an error in the EC hardware or firmware, or possibly a poorly designed BIOS which accesses the EC in an unsafe manner. The EC driver will retry the failed transaction if possible.
With #1 being the most recent one that, I assume, is the one that occurred at the latest BSOD incident about an hour ago. Also, I got two other errors that showed up frequently:
    1) Your computer has lost the lease to its IP address 10.0.1.5 on the Network Card with network address 00236C7FBC75.
    2) The device 'Multimedia Card Reader' (USB\Vid058f&Pid6337\058F63376377) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.
I'm pretty sure #2 isn't a big deal, as I have an SD card reader which I just unplug when I'm done (I don't see any option to safely remove hardware in the lower right hand side of the screen). Not sure about #1...

  • Tile or Pixels During the Start Up

Macbook Pro 15inch 2007 last Oct started to exhibit some strange video behavior.  Start up is fine until the grey Apple with progress bar appears.  Then it's frozen and must be shut down via the power button.  In Safe Mode, it works fine with exception the graphics are chunky if moving a window around.  The S or verbose mode doesn't exhibit any problems either.  Start up Disk also has a working screen and runs.
Connecting the laptop in T mode to a MacPro, it shows up normally and Disk Utility doesn't report any problems.  As precaution, I formated the laptop drive and loaded fresh OS.  Regular start up mode...laptop still shows the blocky, tiles upon reaching the grey apple screen.
The Apple support pages show there was some warranty extension, but expired 2012.  It was about the GPU being a lemon.  Anyways, if anyone else had this before or fixed it, I'm all ears!
    Thanks
    David

Ifd you go to /Users does your home folder still exists? If so, then go into Accouns and make a new user account with your same name, and this is very important, same short name. When you do, you will get a message that a home folder already existsd and would you like to use it, say yes and then log out and your account should be there. If there is no home folder your only option is to restore from a backup.

  • Y position of my video background goes down 2 pixels when title starts?

I tried to work-around this by using keyframe and solved it. But why such a behavior?

exported it via adobe media encoder but the result was just as it was in PrPro.
Strange.  A render or export has never shown that little twitch for me.  I only saw it while playing unrendered footage.  Not sure what to advise next.

  • Inspecting FCE pixel ratio - always anamorphic, or square force possible?

We produce widescreen (16:9) DVDs using FCE+iDVD and some DVD players crop the sides of the video, even when playing the video on a widescreen monitor. Other DVD players letterbox the top and bottom of the frame and interpolate the played area of the screen. (The played area appears to be interpolated because there is interpolation-based pixelation and blurring on the letterboxed displays, but not on the cropped displays.) We're consistenly getting issues when producing video on FCE, and the aspect ratio issues were traced back to FCE using anamorphic pixel ratios.
(Also, we had the problem in the past with iDVD not detecting FCE output (using quicktime conversion (854x480)) as being anamorphic - this problem was worked around using anamorphicizer.)
Therefore, I want to use square pixels in FCE, since we use both DVDs, and web-based methods of disseminating our video, the square pixels will hopefully avoid this issue with the DVD players playing things in different modes, and at the same time will keep the web-based video pixels square so we don't have morphic problems when we go to web. Is it possible (to force FCE to use square pixels)?
Also, is it possible to examine the video using any products (mac, third party, open source, etc) to query the produced video and determine what the pixel ratios are? I don't want to have to go to Adobe products since we just had the editor buy FCE, but that's the only viable solution I know which will produce the proper aspect ratio and pixel aspect ratios reliably....

Thanks Tom, we do record in HD - 1080p in AVCHD. I believe FCE transcodes the video into the apple intermediate codec, am I correct on that one? We produce publicity videos that we then put on youtube for some clients. We're running into issues where the aspect ratio is off when going to a square pixel video format. Is it possible to tell FCE to export into square pixels? I want to produce some videos in square pixels for posting to web-based media and some in anamorphic pixels for DVD work ....
As far as the letterboxing point then, is iDVD really just that bad? I had seen quality issues with it before, but I didn't think it could possibly be this bad... Our editor has Toast; is that a potential alternative for authoring the DVDs?

  • Boris titles in square pixels in a HDV 1080i timeline

My sequence is in HDV 1080i. When I create titles with Boris 3D, the format info says: Pixels: Square. Is this OK with my HDV clips?
I`m going to export all the timeline in QT convertion ProRes 422.
    Thanks.

How well it looks on an HDTV is dependent on how good the upconversion being done by the TV or DVD player is.
What you see is normal.. FCP's titlers will adapt to the format that the titles are set to be in the sequence setting. You needn't worry about is what I'm saying.

  • Elongated-square pixels

I converted some video from a DVD using MPEG Streamclip, to be played on Public Access, every-thing's fine. But then when I run the video through FCP to make a new video, FCP elongates the pixels. Making them wider, it's very noticeable, than the original. I've tried everything I know and can't get it to stop doing that. Any ideas?

I did the 720x480 and everything was pushed in. I'm certain the original video is 853x480, when I process that they match perfectly. It's only when I process it through FCP the pixels elongate. What I did try and it matches pretty well is process at 768x480, then when FCP elongates the pixels it looks close to the original, but I feel that's a 'back-door cheat'. There has to be some way to export the quicktime video and keep the pixels square, but they keep elongating and I don't know how to stop that.

  • Need to square various images - some tall, others wide - ideas?

I have several thousand images. They vary in size and some are tall and others wide.
I need to have all images square. Not wanting to lose resolution or have smaller images expanded and look bad.
How can I make all of my images square? Which if any of your programs would do that in a batch process?
    examples:
    An image 200 x 400 end up 400 x 400
    an image 800 x 600 end up 800 x 800
and so on. Or if anything make them all 600 x 600 wand resize down large images or give white space around smaller images.
Which program if any will do this?
    thanks,

    Mass resizing tutorial
So you're wanting uniform size? You can use Image Processor script along with an action to make them all square in 1 simple click of the Run button (after you apply the right settings, of course.) Yes, all however many thousand images you have! We want to get this done in 1 swoop, which is possible, especially since all the images are ending up being the same size. I'm going to hold anyone's hand and do this step by step for anyone who has minimal to expert experience in photoshop. This explanation is very simple to follow.
1: Preparation to make them square
Heres the first step for the canvas size to be made uniform and square-y with a simple action. If you don't want square-y but still want uniform, skip this step. Let's say you want to make those thousands of pictures all 600 x 600 pixels. This is the preparation step. Make a new blank document 400 x 400 pixels. Make a new action, and name it Canvas Resize, and hit the record buton to start recording your actions. Change the canvas size to 600 x 600 pixels, and after you do that, stop the action recording. Close the document.
2: Organize so PhotoShop can process all your photos in 1 swoop
So we want to make everything 600 x 600. I'm using CS4, but CS3 and CS2 (and probably older versions of PS) all have a feature called Image Processor. This is the time to consolidate all the images you want to process into 1 main folder for an easy 1 click operation. Make two folders on your desktop and label one Pictures and the other Processed. You can either toss all your picture files which you want to process into the Pictures folder for a giant mess, or if you're organized, toss a bunch of organized folders into the Pictures folder, and you can keep your folder organization automatically. I'd recomming copying (NOT moving your pictures, COPYING) and organizing your pictures to be processed in the Pictures folder so that you don't potentially ruin your current organization of your photo archive. I've made my messes before moving files around and trying to figure out where I pulled them from.
    3: Now that we're organized:
After you've consolidated your files, we will use photoshops Image Processor feature. First, click on File -> Go to Scripts -> Click Image Processor. A dialogue box will pop up with a bunch of options. Section 1 (section numbers are on the left) is "Select Images To Process."  Click the Select Folder button and find the Pictures folder on the desktop with your images in it, and select the folder. Click OK. If your images are in multiple sub-folders inside the Pictures folder, and you want to process everything in each folder, check the Include Sub-Folders box so itll process everything inside. In section 2 of the Image Processor, "Select the Location to Save Processed Images," select where your batch of images is going to be saved. Select the Processed folder for this. If you have your photos organized in a sub-folder folder structure, and want to keep that organization, check the "Keep folder structure" box so it will structure your folders inside the Processed folder the same way it was structured inside the Pictures folder.  Now for the file type. Choose whichever file type you want to save your photos as. Check "Resize to fit", and in the resolutions for width and height, put the same number in both. This will NOT stretch the images, but it will take whichever dimension is larger and scale it your specified number, and keep the aspect ratio the same! For example, say you have an 1800 x 1200 image, which is a 3:2 aspect ratio. If you type 1200 x 1200 in the dimensions, wether vertical or horizontal, it will resize the long dimension of the image to 1200, and the shorter to 800 and keep the 3:2 ratio. Cool, huh? This makes it painfully easy to do thousands of pictures overnight if you want them the same maximum dimension wether vertical or horizontal.
    Now for the magic:
In section 4, "Preferences" in the Image Processor, you can have PS apply actions to pictures after they've been resized. Ain't that fancy? Check the Run Action box, and select the Canvas Resize action we created earlier. Since we created an action that changes the canvas size to 600 x 600 pixels, the action of making it square will be done all in 1 shot! Any picture 600 x ? will be made into 600 x 600 with whatever color you chose your background to be in recording your action. Now, click the Run button, and your computer will angrily churn all your images into perfect 600 x 600 pixel squares. All numbers I used were for expample only. Pick whatever number you want. If you want 3000 x 3000 squares, punch in 3000 x 3000, make the canvas resize action for it, and go for it!
Anyone who reads this and tries it, let me know how easy or difficult it was to use this tutorial for you. This method is how I organize the CDs or DVDs which I submit to register my photos to the US Copyright office. I generally make a batch of 800PX JPEGs, images out of all the photos I selected to copyright, burn em, and I'm done within the hour. For my first copyright CD, I made a copyright CD for registration in less than an hour for 4 years of my photographic work.
And P.S.: Upsizing always dulls or pixelates a photo unless you're going to take the time and enlarge each one with enlarging software, and that's a whole new batch of processing in its own. And.. yes, I wrote this whole tutorial just for this post, lol. I enjoy teaching technical knowledge. Hope this helps and whoever reads this enjoys it!

  • Make grid squares into dots

    Hi!
I'm new quite new to PS but think it is the right tool for a job I have to do.
The general idea is to make a photo into small dots. I thought I could pixelate a photo and then make the pixels/squares into dots in different sizes. After an awful lot of clicking i wondered if anyone had a trick to do this easy.
At first I tried with this Mickey Mouse picture, but didn't end with a very nice result.
And you bet I used a heck of a lot time!
I really hope someone has a trick to do this a better way than just clicking with the pencil tool like I did.
    Regards
    Christoffer

Semaphoric is exactly right (great tip), but what's unsaid is that you need to set all the angles the same to get nice black dots...  And you'll need to start with a gray image rather than black so that there is some white space between the dots.

  • PS CS6 Shows Transparent Pixels Over Image When Zooming Past 50%

I'm not sure why, but Photoshop just started doing this after I converted my files to a smart object. When I try to zoom in past 50%, it displays these transparent pixel squares over the entire image. I tried rasterizing and flatting the image back, but that didn't do anything. It seems to keep doing this. Any suggestions how I can fix this?

That sounds like a typical display driver problem.
If you have a PC, visit the web site of the maker of your video card, seek out and download/install the latest display driver for your hardware and OS, and reboot (even if it doesn't require it).
If you're on a Mac, you might find that manipulating the graphics processor-specific settings in your Photoshop-Preferences-Performance dialog (and in the Advanced settings) might help.  Make sure to fully Quit and restart Photoshop after making changes there.

  • The (new) Premiere pixel aspect ratio is wrong for my PAL DV cam footage

I've had a Sony TRV-950E DV-cam since 2003. I've been shooting DV PAL in widescreen.
I just bought Elements 12 to edit my footage, and discovered that the pixel aspect ratio for D1/DV PAL Widescreen has been updated to 1.46 (old value 1.42).
The theory behind this change is that video recorded on 720x576 is slightly wider than 16:9 and that the 16:9 portion is 704x576.
Unfortunately this is not correct for my footage! I've captured the video from my DV-cam (by firewire) and opened it in Premere and it is streched to be shown as 1050x576.
    So I did a test:
I filmed a steady shot of a perfect circle and captured the video from the camera and opened it in Premiere. The pixel ascpect ratio 1.46 makes the display 1050x576.
The question is: Am I seeing this displayed as a perfect circle now?
    This can be tested:
I make a picture of a perfect circle in Photoshop (square pixels) with size 1024x576. I imported this picture into the Premiere project, and match the two circles: The filmed one, and the Photoshop one.
They DO NOT match! The one on the video is slightly stretched in width.
So then I stretch the Photoshop picture in width to become 1050x576. I then import this picture into the project. And now I have a perfect match between the circles!
This means that my DV camera actually records a 100% 16:9 picture on all the pixels 720x576 - and not a slightly wider picture with the 16:9 part being in 704x576 (which is the reason for the change in pixel aspect ratio from 1.42 to 1.46).
I have some HD scenes that I want to import (and downscale) into my SD project also, and I also have a lot of still pictures.
Unless I can change the setup i Elements to the correct ratio 1.42, these stills and sqare-pixel-video (HD) should ideally be streched from 1024x576 to 1050x576 to match (become equally stretched as) all the SD footage.
    How do I solve this?
I just bought Elements 12 three days ago.
(I just tried opening the captured video in Windows Movie Maker - and that program must use pixel aspect ratio 1.42 since the video is diplayed correctly as 1024x576 with a perfect circle)
    Regards,
    Tom from Norway

    Tom
After much thought and exploration and experimentation, I have come to the conclusion that there is no practical purpose for doing anything other than importing your media into the project and editing/exporting. I find no distortion in doing so, be it in the video samples that you posted or in still models that I created for the pixel aspect ratio 1.422 vs 1.4587 for D1/DV PAL Widescreen.
If you have not already, please read the following about the Adobe DV Widescreen Pixel Aspect Ratio change from 1.422 to 1.456.
Please start in the first link which gives some get subsequent links in it
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/673877
    http://www.mikeafford.com/blog/2009/03/pal-d1-dv-widescreen-square-pixel-settings-in-after -effects-cs4-vs-cs3/
Also, you may find the following article on square and non square pixels of interest. It uses the PAL DV Widescreen 1.422 pixel aspect ratio in its discussion.
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/gerard_rick/pixel_madness.php
Aside from the explanation for the rights and wrongs of the matter, this is what I actually observed taking your PAL DV AVI Widescreen  and PAL MPEG2.mpg Widescreen  into the same Premiere Elements 12 Windows PAL DV Widescreen project. Along with your video files were still images that I created in Photoshop Elements 11 Full Editor:
1024 x 576 document with a red circle on Layer 2 of the Layers Palette
1050 x 576 document with a red circle on Layer 1 of the Layers Palette.
The red circles were superimposed in creation. The difference in the pixel dimensions between the two are evidenced by Layer 1 content peaking through on the left and right.
The gpsot readout for pixel aspect ratio for each of the videos was
    a. Your PAL DV AVI 720 x 576 Widescreen = 1.422
    b. Your PAL MPEG2.mpg 720 x 576 Widescreen = 1.422
Each of the Photoshop Elements documents (circles) saved as .psd files 1050 x 576 pixels.
When all were taken into Premiere Elements 12 project manually set for PAL DV Widescreen, they looked like the following, no display of distortion.......
PAL DV AVI Widescreen 720 x 576 (now the pixel aspect ratio in Premiere Elements Properties was shown as 1.4587, not the 1.422 seen in gspot before import)
PAL MPEG2.mpg Widescreen 720 x 576 (now the pixel aspect ratio in Premiere Elements 12 Properties was shown as 1.4587, not the 1.422 seen in gspot before import)
Edit Menu/Preferences/General with check mark next to "Default Scale to Frame Size" was in effect.
As for the red circles stills (1050 x 576 to equate to the square pixel version of 720 x 576 widescreen) did not distort when brought into the Premiere Elements 12 Edit area monitor which is established by the PAL DV Widescreen project preset with the pixel aspect ratio = 1.4587.
The jpg version of the Photoshop Elements document (.psd) 1050 x 576 pixels (square pixels) looked like:
And, when this Timeline was exported Publish+Share/Computer/AVI with the DV PAL Widescreen preset, there was no distortion in the export. It looked undistorted as it did before export.
So, unless I am overlooking a key point here, I cannot see a reason why you cannot use the video sources that you presented for sampling as weil as stills with the 1050 x 576 pixel dimensions.
The only time I see any distortion possibilities is if you use a player that does not recognize the 16:9 flag that stretches the 720 x 576 to 1050 x 576 for display after encoding.
Trying to convert Premiere Elements 12 which uses the 1.4587 pixel aspect ratio for PAL DV Widescreen into a Premiere Elements 7 which uses the 1.422 pixel aspect ratio for PAL DV Widescreen is up hill in spite of creative thinking on your side.
Please review and let me know if you are seeing another different from what I am reporting with the samples that you posted.
    Thank you.
