Pixelated viewing on TV
I have made a movie in FCP and the DVD using DVDSP, burning it using Toast. It looked fine when I viewed the .mov file in DVD Player, but when I played the disk using my DVD set-top player on a widescreen TV, the slightest movement of the interview subjects in the movie causes bad pixelation. The stock footage I've bought is even worse, although it looked fine too in DVD Player.
I guess there are several settings that will affect the output, but here's some info that might help. Can anyone advise what I should do to fix this problem?
Camera: Sony PD170 (standard definition)
Output from FCP: File > Export > QuickTime Movie
Output from DVDSP: File > Advanced Burning > Build
Output from Toast: I dragged the .mov file into the main window (is this the correct file I should use to make the DVD, or is it the Video TS folder?)
Disk type: DVD-R (16x speed)
I don't know anything about codecs and customization options, so if anyone can help me on this issue, would you please give me simple steps to follow.
Many thanks,
Andrew
I'd follow up on MM's advice about Compressor Repair (a free download from Digital Rebellion). There is a trash preference option, which I would check off as well. In a similar vein, under the Compressor menu (toolbar) click on Reset Background Processing. Also, check Software Updates and if there are any available, install and repair permissions.
There are different ways to set up encoding jobs in Compressor. One of the most simple is to use the Batch Template method. The Batch Template window may open automatically when you first launch Compressor; if it doesn't, File>New Batch from Template. Click on Create DVD. That will automatically create the audio and video targets.
Because this is a template, it will want to create the physical DVD, which you don't want. Click in the batch window to make it active, Open the Inspector, if it doesn't open automatically. In the Job Action tab, When Job Complete, select Do Nothing. Drag your movie into the source well and submit.
Good luck.

USING CS6 creating icons using pixel view...
why has the pixel grid shifted on the document .5 of a pixel when i re-open the image?
is there a way to prevent this?
Is it fixed in an update?
doing pixelXpixel work, this a real pain in the butCorrect, it is the art board that has shifted. Upon opening, I have been re-positioning using the numeric coordinated entry.
Will try the double-click and it may save me some time.
was wondering if there is some screwy pref buried somewhere that is making it shift.
Thanks! -
I work with insect photos. Sometimes it is difficult to crop down to the insect in the "fit" view. Is there a way to crop when in the 1:1 or 2:1 view? Thanks for your help.
One workaround may help somewhat, assuming your insect is not located near the edge of the overall photo:
in the Manual tab of the Lens Corrections panel, is a Scale option. This magnifies or reduces the whole image content, up to a maximum of 150%, within the "window" of the picture boundary.
Your crop boundary would still be able to select the same extent taken from the original picture data, but could now at least be doing so within a 50% more "magnified" view of the image (though I agree with others that being able to zoom in the more usual way during cropping / straightening, would be a great addition to the software).
This extract may look a little coarser on screen while you work on it in Lightroom - e.g. 1:1 pixel view would no longer be truly 1:1 - because of the scaled up on-screen preview. But if this is then exported to the same target output dimension (number of pixels) or else printed to the same final size, as it otherwise would have been - then this workaround should AFAICT have made no practical difference in the final result.

How to achieve perfect 100% web view
Hi all,
We are a web design agency, and we prepare many of our web designs in Photoshop, and then export to PDF for clients to view the designs.
Ever since (I think it was) version 7, we seem to have a very, very hard time getting our PDFs to present at exactly 100% "pixel-for-pixel" screen view to mimic sharply what we see in Photoshop. All we want to do is prep our PDF so that Initial view is a pixel-for-pixel match of the 100% view. Any zooming + or - introduces artifacting.
We have tried seemingly endless combinations within the Preferences > Page Display settings to no avail. For example, when I save a 72PPI JPEG design in Acrobat Pro (9.4.4 Mac), in order to view it to simulate "100%", I have to set Acrobat's initial zoom level to 72.3%! And there is still some minor type artifacting. This is crazy!
Does anyone have any ideas?
-- Best
Jeff Y.I think some of the statements made about "points" aren't really technically accurate. Not that it matters...
Thanks for this. Sounds like a reasonable enough workaround. But I wish to hell Adobe would implement a pixel-for-pixel view.
It doesn't seem likely...for most PDF files, it isn't clear what it would mean. Since a PDF file can have vector artwork, images at multiple resolutions, transformations applied to all of the above...in the general case you can't have a pixel-for-pixel view.
Yes, for the special case of PDF files containing a single raster image it's possible.
Another concern: how do you know all your clients will set up their PDF readers this way, or even that they will all use Adobe Reader and not Preview and various other tools? Because all this effort to configure the reader is wasted otherwise.
Better to teach them to read PNG files, if you're visiting every client workstation anyhow. They shouldn't have to know "what they are." Can't they just click a link? -
Render preview vs Develop View confusion
Hi,
I am having a hard time understanding the various "render" and "view" options.
I just noticed that under "Develop" mode, my modications to the noise reduction settings is not changing the "fit to screen" preview. I can only see the effects by zooming in to 1:1 view. Therefore, I can't see the effect on the whole picture until I export it?!?
I then went back to Library mode and noticed the "Preview" option. I have been generating "minimal" previews on Import (should I change that?). I now re-rendered these as 1:1 previews and lo-and-behold the changes are now noticeable. But I assume that's a one time event. If I go ahead and change them again, I will have to regerate the previews?
What's going on here? Noise Reduction and Noise reduction alone doesn't trigger regeneration of the "Fit" preview in develop mode?? Why not??Oh man that is not what I wanted to hear. At the very least they should make it a toggle, an option that one can select if one has the CPU to handle it. It's really confusing to assume that "Develop" mode shows the closest rendering to the final output and then have one (but only one!!) of the adjustment tools not update the screen preview (or whatever one calls the view that Develops shows us - "Develop Preview"?).
Further confusing matters is this statement from beta 2 release:
"The Develop preview now shows sharpening & noise reduction at less than 1:1 view when using PV2010."
http://www.lightroomqueen.com/blog/2010/03/23/whats-new-in-lightroom-30-beta2/
So, it looks like it got removed between Beta2 and Final Release (but only NR; sharpening was kept)?
So, now I don't fully understand how to estimate the "look" of my output with various NR applied. I understand I can zoom in to 1:1 to get the pixel view but I also like to get a "bird's eye view" of the effect on the whole image. HOw do I do this now without actually outputing to jpg and then checking? Bibble, for one, handles this on the fly. NR effects are rendered immediately.
Thanks for any advice,

Where is "Editor"-Comtrols View in top of Plugin GUI?
Normally I work on Logic Pro 7.2.3 and today I am working on a Logic Express 7.2.3 system.
In Logic Pro, when using plugins, at the top of any plugin GUI, there is an "Editor" button which lets me switch between Editor View or Controls View.
Today in using Logic Express 7.2.3, I am not seeing that Editor button in the GUI of any plugins I am using. Am I just overlooking something obvious, and missing how to access Controls View in Express plugins, or is this button (Editor) only available in Logic Pro?
Again, my apologies if I am staring right at it and missing how to access it, but I don't see it.
Thanks for any tips!
WSAs far as I know, there is no full screen mode in the Editor.
For double-checking image optimizations, there's no substitute for using the "Actual Pixels" view, even though it requires a lot of scrolling....

Square & Rectangular Pixels in FCP & DVDSP
Hi,
I exported an NTSC 4:3 DV video from FCP to QT and imported that video into DVDSP. Simulating that video in DVDSP resulted in a rectangular pixel view, as one would expect to see in a SD project.
However, in FCP's canvas, the same video does not look like the the DVDSP's simulated video unless you check "Show as Sq. Pixels". In other words, FCP and DVDSP are opposite each other in the way video is displayed - rectangular pixels in DVDSP must be displayed as square pixels in FCP in order for them to look the same. Is there a reason for this?Check the export settings, I have found that the items can get resized on the the export and changes the size (also selecting square/non-square in the viewer can change how it looks in the export) So basically (and sometimes it acts strange) and using NTSC as an example there are two sizes that could come up 720 x 480 or 720 x 486 for the project and two aspect ratios on export (same thing) which can sometimes be affected by the Codec chosen (it may resize it)

Nforce 3 Platninum and 6800GT works fine for a week or so then fails to boot.
Hi everyone,
I have read pretty much all the posts on the forum, but none show the exact same problem as mine, as far as I can see.
I have an MSI Nforce 3 plat mobo (with latest BIOS), which is turning out to be the worst investment I ever got.
My specs are as follows:
2x512MB Kingston ram
AMD 3.5
pixelview 6800gt
raptor HD
thermaltake 480W PS
I upgraded to the nforce 3 for the 939pin socket for my AMD chip. I had constant freezing, so my old memory I had to chuck and buy 1GB of Kingston ram. Using my old ATI 9800pro my system was stable. Absolutely no crashes. I decide to buy a pixel view 6800GT AGP card to upgrade. Cool. Plug it in, reload windows (latest WHQL drivers from NVIDIA). Everthing is fine, for about a week. Then bad things start to happen. The symptoms are:
Turn machine on, BIOS check all ok, machine does DMI listing. As soon as the "starting windows" screen comes up, the video display goes corrupt. Either white, with diagonal lines, or windows XP logo all over the screen several times and corrupted. The machine does boot into windows, but the screen is blank or corrupted. I hear the windows startup sound click in. Press the power button, shut down the machine. Reboot. It usually comes up fine.
I thought initially it was the graphics card, so I swapped it out. Reloaded windows. All works ok for about a week. Then, again same problem. Windows event viewer shows no errors.
My question is this: can this be fixed or is it hardware incompatibility. If so, can I fix it tweaking the mobo settings. I have tried the AGP fast writes, didn't work. This looks like intrinsic Hardware incompatibility, but if it is this, why does it work for a week without any problems, and then it gets worse and worse and worse.
If this is a hardware problem, what is the cheapest way to get out of this. Is MSI nforce 4 any better or do I ditch pc gaming all together. I have been gaming from XT days, and I have to say, I am totally disheartened with this whole mess. The one thing in my life that I do want control of is a bootable, reliable PC to relax with at the end of the day. At the moment, I just shed tears as it is turning out to be a costly nightmare.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My friend has offered to buy the 6800GT from me, and give me my old 9800Pro back. Should i do this???
Thanks guys
JohnHi Makisst,
Thanks for the reply.
System specs are as follows:
AMD 3500 64
MSI Neo Platinum (nforce3)
Creative labs Audigy2 pci card
Pixelview 6800GT AGP 256MB
Kingston DDR400 512Mb PC3200 400Mhz x2
MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM 939 pin (MS-7025-010)
Western Digital Raptor™ 74.0Gb 10,000RPM SATA150
Themaltake 480W power supply.
I have 2 extra ATA HDs, which I have not added to the system to rule those out.
I have a DVD player (bog standard MSI) and a CD burner (not plugged in so as to rule this out).
The only thing I have not tried is removing the sound card (audigy 2). What is driving me absolutely nuts is that the machine works fine for a week. Then there is a slow degrade. First boot, scrambled screen, second boot fine. Then a few days later, it will only boot the thrid time around. Then after 2 weeks, it won't boot at all.
I have tried this card in another persons machine (the 6800GT that is), and it boots fine.
I can honestly say I have not tried playing with the BIOS settings except for AGP fast writes, as it was working fine with the Radeon 9800 pro. I have done two full HD formats, and completely wiped the Raptor twice now.
I shall have a look at the BIOS settings you recommended tonight, and see if they make a difference. I am, to be 100% honest, a little bit scared of playing with the BIOS settings, as I really don't know what I am doing. I see that the ppl I bought the machine off have set timings in the BIOS to 3-3-8-3 (I think, I will confirm this tomorrow), so should I leave these settings?
I shall also remove the Audigy 2 card and see what happens. System properties show machine has no conflicts though. It is almost like the card is not initialising correctly. Why this happens only after 1 week though I have no idea. This is the third time it has started happening after 1 week.
The only extra software loaded is Norton, Win XP SP2 and directX9. I really have not had it stable enough to start loading extra software. I am getting too tired after reloading for the third time in 6 weeks.
I will let you know tomorrow either way.
Many thanks

HELP !!! How to check the size of an object in Photoshop ?
Hello,
I'm using Photoshop CS 3 to design a website. I used several shapes such as rectangle, line or ellipse of different size. Probably it is a stupid question but I don't know how to check the size of an existing rectangle. I tried free transform tool that selects my rectangle but doesn't show its size. Then I made a selection with rectangular marquee tool but I see nowhere the size of the selected area.
If you know the name of such a tool please help me !
Have a nice day !Web images are all pixels. View at 100% at pixel view. that is your exact size

It's a known issue now that USB modems are always causing BSODs due to:
1) Old drivers
2) Inadequate Powers
Try to update your modem drivers and try a better PSU and see if you get the same error or problems again.
Next, you can also use Memtest86 to test whether your RAMs are causing any problems also. -
Where is full screen mode in full editor of Elements 9?
Without having to go into the Organizer, is there a way to view images in full screen mode?
After completing the optimization of an image, it would be good to check it out in full screen view.

I am trying to create a signature image for outlook but the image is loosing sharpness when the mail is delivered. What is the ideal work flow to create a signature image?
My workflow would be as follows, as I tested it and found the most satisfying for creating signatures for emails:
Preferably use a graphic tablet and a stylus to create a hand signature
In Illustrator create a regular A4/Letter document
Use the Brush tool: Caligraphic Brush, e.g. 5pt Oval
Draw a large, comfortable signature
Turn on Window>Pixel View and adjust the size of the signature for your final output. After scaling down the path, the 5pt brush might be too large, you can either pick smaller brush 3pt or manipulate with the path/stroke size. Keep it a bit thicker rather than thinner, it will look nicer.
Save for web: GIF, Grayscale, Transparency
Voila. Good luck. -
Develop Mode: Why Do Some Controls Do Nothing
I recently edited a 150 photos. I notice that certain controls in develop mode have no impact when I make adjustments. A good example is Sharpening. There are no changes to the Histogram (you can tell by the motion) or in the image swatch shown above Sharpening. Changes to chromatic aberration and noise reduction also have no impact. Is this a function of the camera, RAW files, or what? This isn't a complaint. I am just curious whether my experience is universal (which I doubt because why would Lightroom have the controls) or a result of my camera, lens, camera setting, or subject matter choices.
Thanks
Jack SiegelYou need to be view an image at 100% pixel view or higher to see the effects
of the adjustments you listed. This is by design.

Ok working my first ipad 3 rendision. Have a Pinch and Zoom or pan and zoom box and on the ipad3 its not allowing me to zoom in vary far? I have the asset at 4000x4000 px?
You'll get that behavior when you use a 1024x768 source document for the pan and zoom and create a 2048x1536 folio. When you're doing that, you'll want to scale the image by 50% so that the effective ppi is 144 pixels (the Info panel shows the image's effective ppi). (By the way, the upcoming v23 release will offer more options for this situation.)
From the Pan & Zoom help topic:
As a general rule, make sure that the image has the exact dimensions you want to use. For example, to pan a 1024-by-1024 pixel image within a 200-by-200 pixel view area, create a 1024-by-1024 image in 72 ppi. However, if you are using 1024x768 source documents in a 2048x1536 folio, using 72 ppi images can result in a different initial view experiences on different iPad models. One approach is to use layers to create different pan & zoom overlays for the different iPad sizes. Another approach is to scale the image by at least 50% so that the effective ppi is at least 144. That way, the initial view behavior remains identical, although the iPad 3 pan and zoom has a more restricted view area. -
Images Not Appearing Right Size
Hi,
I have a mcbook pro retina and using photoshop CS6. This was working properly but all of sudden am having this problem. Let's say I download an image off a google that is 640X480. It appears a certain size in Chrome and Illustrator and Flash and any other program. But when I open the image in Photoshop the image appears a lot smaller. Even though the image is set to 100%. Any idea why this would be happening?
Please help!Good day!
Are you aware that Retina displays have a fairly high resolution?
If Photoshop maps one image pixel to one screen pixel (View > 100%) the image may appear smaller than when being displayed upsampled.

Pfaffenbichler
