Pixelized picture in DVD player

my DVD player shows the picture, but it has fairly large and random pixelations when i try to watch.  What is wrong with it? if you need i can email you a screen shot of it.

My guesses are either a dirty/defective DVD, or a dirty/defective optical drive mechanism. If all DVDs do it, then most likely the mechanism. The usual advice is to try a lens cleaner, or something like partially inserting a credit card with a thin cloth over it to try to attract any lint. Failing that, it may require a new optical drive.

  • Pixelated pictures when dvd is played after burning in IDVD

I have created a slideshow in iDVD - all went well. I have burned to a dvd however, when the dvd is played on our dvd player/tv the pictures are terribly pixelated. (they look fine on the preview during the project) - rather frustrating when the thing takes HOURS to burn as there are 1000+ images. Any advice to be offered as to why this is happening and how to prevent it? Many thanks.

    Hi Lyn Olds
Welcome to apple discussions. If you haven't already, take a look at apple's tutorial for iDvd. They really do help.
    iDVD Tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd
iDVD 8 Manual, as pdf, so download it. It is very helpful:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#idvd
Keep in mind the protocol for burning a dvd is rather specific and reduces the resolution of most images to 640 x 480. That's less than a third of a megapixel for still images. Most burned Dvd's are lagging well behind the capabilities of current hi-resolution cameras and camcorders.

You may also want to take a look at these 3 apps that specialize in quality slideshows. They come highly recommended on this forum (especially the first one).

    http://boinx.com/photopresenter/overview/
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
If the above apps don't meet your needs then search this forum for other solutions like using Ken Burns effect to minimize pixelation via a QT movie.
I believe OT does a great job of explaining this per the following link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8164545&#8164545
Btw, the only way I am aware of to burn High Resolution DVD’s is with Roxio’s Toast and a Blue Ray burner.
Another solution is to simply hook your TV to the Mac for playback. That or consider using AppleTV which essentially circumvents the need to burn a dvd altogether.

  • No picture in DVD Player

    Hi!
I wanted to ask whether any of you knows this issue or has a solution to it:
When I watch a DVD in Leopards DVD Player in Fullscreen and switch to window view it increasingly often happens that there is no video anymore. Audio works fine but you wont see anything at all. Even if you get back to the Menu, you only see the image of your "cursor".
Relauching the app does not solve the issue, only restarting Leopard fixes it.
I'm watching DVDs with region code 2 (Europe) if that's helpful.
    Thanks in advance.

    hi
i also have the problem with my Macbook Pro (bought in january) that i dont have a picture when playing DVDs, i only see the menu markers on a black screen and hear the sound. But this is not always the case. It may be that one day a DVD plays fine, and the next day it is not working, or the other way around. I have also been updating the system with the "software update" function, but the this didnt help. I use leopard in version 10.5.1.
    Can someone help, please?
    best regards,
    daniel

  • Dvd plays fine in a dvd player but pixelated in Apple DVD player

    Hi,
Thanks in advance. I have a dvd that I built/formatted in DVDSP with the default settings in place.
It plays fine in a DVD player, but once I try playing it back with Apple DVD Player, there is one 5 minute video clip that is heavily pixelated to the point that the pixels are literally 100 times larger than a normal pixel, and these faint, broken "pixel fields" jump all over the place and the image looks incredibly "glitchy".
Why is this happening? Does Apple DVD Player play DVDs with a different pixel aspect ratio or setup? Is there a setting for playback in a computer DVD player that I need to set upon Build/Format?
    Thanks...

In DVD Player, hit Command-1 which will play your video at Actual Size. If you try to "fill the screen" it will become soft and fuzzy because you are pixel doubling (or worse).
SD video is very low res.

  • Stops after 99th picture on DVD player

I am trying to burn a slideshow and it will play fine on my computer, but everytime I put it in a DVD player, the show stops after the 99th picture. I don't think it has anything to do with the audio, because it is right in the middle of a song. What can I do?

Not all consumer DVD Players do well with slideshows that exceed 99 photos. Here's why:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302961
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302962
iDVD6 treats a photo as a chapter and the DVD standard only allows up to 99 chapters....hence only 99 photos in many set top DVD Players. With iDVD6 you can use more than 99 photos but there is no guarantee that they will play as expected in all DVD players as many set top DVD players will choke trying to go past 99 chapters.
Hope this helps but if not come on back.

  • I have an '09 macbook and want to transfer selected pictures to a disc that will play on my tv's dvd player.  How do I do this?

I have an '09 macbook and want to select specific pictures to put on a disc that will play on my televisions dvd player.  How do I do that?

OM gosh!  After working on this for 2 days, by golly, I got it!  I used Free App DVD Creator.  I had first tried to burn the disc in PAL Format.....wrong format for the good 'ol USA.  After a little research I learned that the USA format is NTS.....so I chose that and it worked!  I now have a disc I can play on our dvd player on the TV.  Thanks all for above assistance.  Problem now solved!

  • I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggsts

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

  • Can I create an iDVD slide show and keep the picture resolution high so the pictures will be HDTV quality or near HDTV quality for playback on a DVD player?

How do I create an iDVD slide show that does not compress the photos making them low-res? When I insert the iDVD I have made into a DVD player connected to an HDTV, the playback quality of the pictures are very low.  Is there a way to correct this when creatinf the iDVD?

The post by Bengt Wärleby in this topic describes a workflow for producing a high quality slideshow but not an HD one as macpmaus pointed out isn't possible: Create HD slideshow: Apple Support Communities

  • I have images in aperture and in my picture folder that I want to burn to DVD. I need them to be viewable on pc and possibly via a DVD player. My first attempt proved to work only mac. Can anyone help?

Can anyone help me with burning DVD with images in Aperture and picture folder. I need the to be viewable on pc and DVD player if possible.
My first attempt only works on mac.

Eh la Pastenague! Je savais que tu était léthale pour l'homme mais ce sont pluôt les machines à pommes qui devraient te craindre. Merci! Solved.
    For future reference.
My TC is a 3rd gen.
I actually had to reset to standard defaults not only once but twice. The first time I simply returned to my old profile but that only led to the same message error on the network settings (i.e. IP by default, cannot connect to the internet). Therefore the second time around I kept my profile as backup and re-created a new one plus a guest one.
The airport utility then signaled to issues remaining:
    1) Internet access was cut - this I solved by simply reseting the cable modem
    2) There were no DNS Servers - I simply copied the ones I had from the previous setup and it worked
    I did have AppleCare....
I'm online again and I hope for good.
    Thanks a lot
PS. a small tip - I made captures of all my settings in Network settings, Airport Utility and Network utility using Grab in case of ... if anything it is just handy to get back settings that your are missing when setting up a new configuration

  • Mac Pro DVD player not showing picture, only audio

When playing a DVD, my DVD player on Mac Book Pro does not show the picture, you only hear the audio. Any ideas?

This started yesterday for me too--audio works fine, but picture is gone. I tried 4 different DVDs to be sure, and all of them have no picture. The screen is completely black. I guess it's time to go to the Genius Bar...

  • Hello..Does anyone in this community know what the following error code indicates   0x8002006E   I was trying to burn a DVD from files in a burn folder. They were pictures from my Nikon camera. I can play videos and movies from the same dvd player.

I was trying to burn a DVD from files in a burn folder. They were pictures from my Nikon camera. I can play videos and movies from the same dvd player.    Thanks for any help you can offer,

    Thanks for your reply:
I did find an error log related to the error code and tried all suggestions on the list of recommendations, still no luck
I definitely am running OS X10.5.8 (hopefully will be updating later on this month)
I tried several brand new discs from the same box, still no luck.
My last option is to go out and try a different brand, guess I'll go with Verbatim this time but I think I'll poke around some more before buying 20 more new discs.

  • Jacket Picture displays in simulator; not in DVD Player

I added Jacket Picture as described in the manual. It works in the simulator (when you press Stop, the picture is displayed instead of a black screen.)
After I build the project, it doesn't work in DVD Player. Should it?
The build folder does indeed have a JACKET_P folder, containing 3 files:
    J00_5L.mp2
    J00_5M.mp2
    J00_5S.mp2
There's also an empty PAR folder in the JACKET_P folder as well.
The log file during the build shows the jacket pictures being built....
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hey Stephen!
Yes. You have to format a disc image to hard drive and then mount and play it; or write a disc first, before the Jacket Pictures display in the Apple DVD Player - most of the time after you hit stop.

  • DVD Player has no picture

I have been using DVD Player 4.0 (OSX10.3.9) for well over a year now without a problem. Tonight I tried to watch a DVD. I placed the DVD in the drive and DVD Player started as normal. The DVD started playing (the counter started counting). However there was no sound or picture, however long you left it. As soon as you ask it to do anything, like scan forwards the application freezes.
I have tried turning on and off, deleting the .plist file, and reinstalling the .app file using pacifist.
I am now out of ideas - can anyone help please?
    Cheers

    Hi Gards,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Was this DVD a commercial DVD? Does it play on a different DVD player? Does your computer still play other media (other DVDs/CDs)? What color is the surface? If it isn't commercial; what type of media is it (DVD-R...).
You may want to try verifying and repairing permissions (Knowledge Base Document #106712 on Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X).

  • DVD Player picture size

I have the new Mac Mini, connected to a Pioneer 50 in plasma as a media center. When I first got it, DVD's would play full-screen. Then I fiddled with the audio in DVD Player, to get DD 5.1 output, which now works. Now DVD's don't play full screen, they play in a window about 3/4 of full screen. The desktop is full-screen (with overscan).
I can't seem to find way to expand DVD picture to full screen. I've tried all the preferences in DVD Player. Ahh, the joys of a new computer.
    Max

When you play a DVD with the DVD Player application, and not Front Row, what size does it default to? If the DVD Player application was stopped in the middle of playing a full-screen size movie, it will come out of full-screen mode. When you play your next movie, the DVD Player application will remember this. Perhaps when you were adjusting your audio preferences, the full-screen mode was interrupted?
I don't have a computer with Front Row, but it sounds like it's running the DVD Player with its default preferences, which now may not be to play at full-screen, and it doesn't give you options to change it directly from inside Front Row. So, I would open a movie in the DVD Player directly, switch to full-screen mode and after the screen adjusts, just quit the DVD Player program. Then try it with Front Row to see if it remembers the full-screen display now. Or can you type on the keyboard while the movie is playing? Apple-0 (command and zero) is the keyboard command to change to full-screen mode.

  • When playing a home video DVD using DVD Player I tried to use the "Controls, Use current frame as jacket picture" facility to create a printable image but with no success. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

When playing a home video DVD (created on my Panasonic DVD/Hard Disc recorder)  using the Mac DVD Player, I tried to use the "Controls, Use current frame as jacket picture" facility to create a printable image but with no success. I assume that any file created by this action would be stored somewhere in a common format but cannot find any such file. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Hi Sinious,
Interesting to know about 10.8 and Flash. I'll hold off upgrading until they work together. Currently using 10.6.8 at home and same on the Universtity's computers.
Haven't verified on Windows but shall do later in the week if I can get access to a Windows machine.
Both the Flash player and the Projector come up not full screen, and if I leave it that way then things work OK as long as I don't make the video full screen (using the full screen button on the skin).
However if I make the swf or projector full-screen (by using CMD-F or the menu option) then when I click on the menu item to take me to the page with the video on it, instead of a page with a smallish video and back button I get a black screen with no obvious controls. If I then press Escape I get my normal screen back and I am in the page that should have the video but there is not video and the back button does not work. So something wierd is going on here.
If I make a file without any videos with a similar navigation structure everyting works ok except that when I go full screen I lose the finger cursor when I roll over my buttons (which is also wierd).
