Pixilated dock and icons

My computer has been running fine for years and then today i opened a game (wc3) and the game went all "checkerbaord" and pixilated. when i quit my dock and icons were all pixilated like they had lines of white "IIIIII" passing through them. but when i open sufari or Microsoft Word it they look fine. i've been looking all over the interent and i can't find any answers. Please help!!!
P.S. i've tried restarting, detecting the settings of my monitor and reconecting my display
whats going on!!!

Frank...
So everything is operational and all set? You're able to access the dock? You're able to launch applications? How about Quicktime... seeing that's the last thing you patched, can you launch it without any issues?
You may want to check permissions in Disk Utility, as well as check start-up items. Things don't typically "appear" in there but it can't hurt.
I'd try a restart after that, and a reboot (normal). If the problem replicates itself then it's probably not a Quicktime issue. Especially if it's not queued to run on start-up.
Archive/Install is always the last option, unfortunately, sometimes it's the quickest and easiest way to just "fix" an issue.

  • Click On Icon In Dock And Icon's Appearance Changes?

I am sure this didn't happen before but can't be certain.
When I click on an icon in the right hand section of the Dock, the icon loses its image and has a generic transparent appearance with a downward pointing triangle whilst the contents are being displayed.
Take a look at the screenshot where I have clicked on my User Icon which normally looks like a little house.
The same thing happens to any of the folder icons and I'm sure it didn't do it before?
Any suggestions or explanations . . . . . . or is it all perfectly normal?

    Thanks for both your replies.
It happens with both Fan and Grid View as you mentioned, together with Auto.
It doesn't occur when you open in finder or use List View.
So it appears that it is perfectly normal and I must have been looking at it for the past year without it registering in my brain . . . . what's left of it!

  • My macbook pro 15 inch freezes up. I forced a shutdown. After reboot, system restarted to factory settings, applications/softwares disappeared, apple dropdown menu disabled, dock and icons missing, keyboard not functioning

Hi. I'm in need of great help as I do not understand how this could have happened.
I had my firefox on, with multiple tabs and windows as I was doing intense research for a paper. My screen then freezes up, but my mouse could still work. Having experienced this before, I immediately pressed and hold the power button till my macbook pro shuts down.
After which, I switched it back on. To my horror, everything was resetted to factory settings: my desktop background was replaced, the fonts on the clock display were different. But this wasn't so bad.
After which, I realised that my dock went missing, together with the icons. I clicked the apple drop down menu, and my screen hanged momentarily, and in that moment everything on the screen disappeared (including the upper dock) for a few seconds and appear again. Meaning, i cant click the drop down.
Similar thing happened with my spotlight. Using the hot keys command-space, the dropdown appeared on the top right, but when i started to type, the screen disappeared and appeared again like before.
Finally i checked my applications folder, and it seems like all the applications are missing, like they have never been installed before! Their folders are there, but the icons and apllications themselves aren't. No applications/software installed- not even the utilities and system preference softwares that came with the macbook.
Luckily though, all my documents are safe. I just cant open them because my iworks and adobe are all missing and "not installed". I cant even access the internet. I'm doing this via my iPhone.
So basically i cant do anything because my apple drop down menu is unreachable, so is my spotlight, and my apps/softwares like system preference, utility are all missing. Is there a way i can troubleshoot this? Or make my macbook work again? I have already restarted and shutdown and switch it back on again near five times.
I know my explanation is long, but do help me if you can. I'm really at a lost right now...

    Hi
Thanks for the help. I did what you advised, but it still did not work.
The repair disk was successful. Unfortunately when the system restarted to boot my startup disk, I faced the exact same problems as I did previously. I also did a hardware test, but no problems were found.
Even tried powering off and on the macbook pro again but the same problems remained...
I tried to back-up my files too but they refuse to copy/move into my hard disk drive folder.
    Nothing works.
Do you have other ideas? Or suggestions?
    Thanks so far!

  • Unstable harddisk won't go in dock - and icon is "greyed out" in Finder

Some time ago, I couldn't find my system disk in the dock in Finder (the thing to the left when you open a Finder window). I thought I'd accidently thrown it out, so I did a Sherlock search for it. I found the disc, but its icon was weirdly "greyed out", as if to tell me the disc was "deactivated" or so - and it wouldn't go into the disk dock.
I tried reformatting the disc completely, which worked for 1 day or so, and then the problem was there again. So I thought the harddisk was effed and bought a new one, formatted it and installed OS+programs yet again. After 2 days, the disk disappeared again and was, again, "greyed out" when I searched for it.
I've had the same setup with regards to software, RAM and HD's for almost a year prior to this happening, so it's most likely not a problem caused by new equipment going crazy.
    Anyone see this before?

    Dave,
Try doing  a SMC reset and if that doesn't help try starting in Safe Mode.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

I have three Safari icons. Two in the dock and one on the desktop. How do I eliminate them?
One from the dock and the one on the desktop.

In Finder, select the item. Choose File > Get Info (or do ⌘I). Look under General > Kind. Does it read "Alias" or does it read "Application (Intel)"?
If the latter, then it is likely that you're not allowed to delete because it's actually open. Quit Safari. Check if there is an item called Safari in your </Applications> folder. (In Finder, you can get directly to the Applications folder using ⇧⌘A -- that's Shift-Command-A.) Check if it's an application. If it is, then you have an unneeded copy of Safari. You can delete the one on your Desktop. If there isn't, them move the one on the Desktop to the Applications folder -- that's where it belongs.

  • Mail icon is missing from Dock and not in Applications folder.  What to do?

My email icon disappeared from my dock when I turned off my computer.  In the past I go to the Applications folder and just drag the Mail application to the dock and I am good to go.  Now my Mail program is no longer in my Application folder.  Is there a site I can go to and download the Mail application for MacBook?  I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Thanks!

I actually found the System disk and reinstalled all of the Applications (including Mail), but when I went to open it, it said "this version of Mail does not work with the Operating System (Mac OS X 10.5.8).  What now?!
    Thanks.

  • I can no longer hold down the Safari icon on the dock and open a new window

I noticed after installing Snow Leopard that I am unable to hold down the icon for Safari on my dock and choose the option to open a new window. I have had to revert to (Command-Tabbing) through my open applications to get to Safari, then (Command-N).
I found it much more convenient to do it the other way. Am I missing something, or is this something that has been removed with the new Snow Leopard operating system?
    Please help. Thanks!

Thank you. What a pain though. Why would they make it a separate command now. It would be so easy to have kept it in the pop-up that shows when you hold the cursor down on it.

  • When i click on my launch pad icon on the dock, and it opens, there are no photo icons only words!! Any body know how to get picture icons back ???

When i click into my launchpad on my dock, and it opens, there are currently no picture icons only words. How do i get my picture icons back?? plase help

This procedure will reset the state of LaunchPad to its default. Any customization that you did will be removed.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Dock
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside it are one or more files with long names ending in ".db". Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the folder open. Log out, log back in, and test. If there's no change, put the files you moved back where they were, overwriting the ones that may have been created in their place. Then log in and log out again. Otherwise, delete the files you moved.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Just bought Adobe Photoshop Ps , clicked on the icon in my Mac dock and am staring at a black page with a perimeter of symbols and a heading that reads "Adobe Photoshop CC  2014. I don't have a clue what I do next. I would like to transfer some photos from my iPhoto library. Where do I start?

Photoshop does not transfer files nor import files. It can open files from any place that finder can access for files.
    This is the normal process:
You need to log into https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/catalog/desktop.html Download Center
Select the app you would like to start with
The Creative Cloud manager will install first.
When done installing, the Creative cloud (adobe manager) should open in the middle of your screen.
If no apps automatically start installing then click on Apps
Scroll down to the app you want to install and click the install button
Once the manager says it is done, you can start your app like you normally do with any other app.

The Calendar icon has disappeared from my dock and I can't find a way to restore it or to download the Calendar app. The iCal app is not in my applications folder. Help please.

  • My iphoto icon has disappeared from my dock and applications folder. Please HELP

I tried clicking on the iphoto icon in the dock and nothing happened. I went looking for it in the applications folder and it wasn't there. I then moved the icon from the dock on to the desktop and it poof'd into thin air! GONE. What can I do? Please help! VERY upset.

reinstall iPhoto from the restore disks that came with your computer -
reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only

  • Dock and Folder icons vanished!!!!

    Hi there,
basically i started my MacBook Pro up this morning and once i had logged on i attempted to close some programs and it vanished. I've tried restarting the MacBook Pro, terminal command "Kill all -KILL Dock' and killing the process via Activity Monitor. I have also noticed the MacBook Pro itself is slightly sluggish and the icons next to such things as 'home' and actual folders have disappeared.
    Please help!

  • Networked user logs in and only gets dock and spotlight icon

Here's the deal: I have a networked user (PHD) that logs in the only gets her dock and spotlight icon to come up. The rest of the menu bar at the top is missing. If you click on an icon in the dock it bounces and trys to open but never does and quits. Any ideas? This has happened before to two other users of mine using the same type of computer (2.0ghz 20in iMac G5) With the other two I was very busy so I just dropped our editorial image/clone on there and that fixed it. What is weird about this is that the user can log in on another computer fine and different users can log in on that computer fine. The computer is running 10.4.4 and the xserve is running 10.3.9
    Thanks!

well its created by using bad fonts at one time in your system - or fonts that do not exist on a local volume. when you load a font that is bad and may conflict with a current font etc the system encounters problems - upon reboot the "font cache" remembers this font and doesnt initialize the window server properly. the other case i mentioned is when i loads up and tries to load the font that was cached but was loaded into suitcase or some font management from a cd or network volume. the volume is not available and then the user login fails to finish... been a problem ever since 10.4 came out. 10.3 had its own way of showing the same issue.

  • Any way/application to click on application icon in dock and minimize/hide?

Hi folks. I'd like to know if there is some way to setup being able to click on an application icon in the dock and have it minimize/hide by doing so. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

i just posted pretty much the same thread, and then this thread showed up in the "more like this" column on the right.
option-clicking an icon in the dock to hide has been standard up until mavericks, i've been looking around the web for days and have yet to see an absolute answer for a fix or replacement.
command+H is essentially the same thing, but conflicts with some key apps that may (will) disrupt your production flow.
