Pixilation more pronounced in LR4

Recently upgraded to LR4 form LR3. Have noticed significant pixilation when image is enlarged for developing or in 3:1 format, on facial images (border of iris or stands of hair) that was not there in LR3 or in iPhoto image of same photo. Shot mainly RAW (Nikon) and convert to DNG. During the library or developement phase this enhancement of pixilation is present. Really defeats the propose of having expensive, quality gear only to loose it during the software processing. Is Adobe aware or trying to correct this?

We'll need to see pictures of that, and possibly an original file.  Also, is this with settings applied or without?  If with, which settings?

wswilkinson ... sorry for the slow get back, my dance card has been full.
I've used 3rd party loops or samples. Myself I don't care for them because for me they seem to "lead" me in a direction. The loops direction .... maybe not how I started the song. So I haven't saved many loops into GB. When I did I had just "read how to" . ... then fumbled through it. So I can find those by searching for the names of them.
Even if I haven't saved many I think I understand how GB goes things.... but could be wrong.
GB has dozens & dozens of loops. Broken up in many groups. Country , Rock , World , yada yada .... Lots !! If you hit say "World" you'll find dozens of loops of ALL types. Drums, horns , keyboards , etc. But they are all mixed together.... if you just hit "World". So I have to test drive most sounds to hear what they are if I don't know what they are. GB breaks "World into different sounds too .... Bass , etc if you hit those. How did they get that way is what you want to .... Did GB just do it ??  Heck if I know .... One of the best places on GB info is
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/BBPages/Stuph/MusicianStuph.html  so check here and please lets us know what you find out.
My thought is make a folder like I said ... named what you want . "My Loops"   ( meaning they didn't come with GB " ) Break everything up into sub folders ... which I guess you may save/add  to as you go a long. When you're done add that to GB's loops. Then look to see if "your" loops have been mixed into GB with you "only" adding the  "My Loops" folder with it Sub groups .. You can always delete something if it doesn't work as you wish ... "ponder things " and try again.
Never have fear to jack around with things !! It's not screwed your life up yet ... Close GB & DON'T Save It if you're not happy ...
    Peace & Good luck

  • Crashes, graphics glitches, and more crashes when editing video clips

Can't for the life of me figure out why PE keeps crashing on me, so I'm here for help.
My system consists of a i7-970 hexacore, 6GB ram, 1x 500GB os drive, 3x500gb raid 0 drives (this is where my video clips are stored), 2x GeForce GTX460 video cards.
OS is Windows 7 Profressional 64 bit.
The video files I work with are generally in the 50-200GB size.
A little background - the videos that I am working with are recordings from Battlefield Bad Company 2 that I have recorded with some capture software called Dxtory.
I record at 1920x1080 at 60 FPS to avi files.  The avi files are using the "xtor" codec (Dxtory's own codec)
    [ISFT]    DxtoryCore ver2.0.0.101
[ISRC]    Video:YUV420 Audio:Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Audio is PCM 192000Hz recorded in stereo.
Let me start by saying I have not had trouble with this before until I started recording the videos at 60 FPS.  30 FPS worked ok (some crashes here and there, but they were bearable), but the frequent crashes started happening when I started working with the 60 FPS videos, done mainly so I could play around with slowing the clips down, etc.
Sometimes I can open and edit clips just fine.
Recently, a project that I'm working on is crashing when I try putting two different clips from different files together on the time line.  I managed to get it to work once, and saved the project after that.  Then, PE crashed randomly and when trying to reopen the project, it just crashes and won't let me get any further.
I should mention the graphics glitches as well - occasionally (especially when previewing video clips before adding them to the timeline) after I close the preview window, the graphics in PE will glitch out, causing random lines to appear in certain areas, graphics to stack on top of eachother and freeze up, and sometimes I can click on the "play" button in the main project window and hear everything start playing, but the graphics are completely screwed up to the point where I can't view the video or hit the pause button.
All of my computer hardware is fine, all drivers, and PE, are up to date.
Can someone please help me figure out what is going on?  I'll be happy to provide any more information that might help out.

The most likely issue is the codec that your program is using the create your video. It's apparently not compatible with Premiere Elements.
This often happens also when people try to record their on-screen video with FRAPS.
You'll see lots of discussions on this issue in the Premiere Pro forum. However, it's even more pronounced in Premiere Elements, which is designed to work almost exclusively with camcorder video.
Some video programs are a little more versatile with this type of video. Some people have found Corell's Video Studio better at handling these non-traditonal formats.
But I did a Google search on Dxtory editing and couldn't find any information on it.
Sorry I can't offer a solution. But I can pretty much assure you that Premiere Elements isn't it. sorry.

  • How can I reproduce PS AutoColor/AutoContrast in LR4

I like these PS general photo enhancements, and would like to create/buy LR4 presets that do exactly this. Only AutoTone seems to be bundled with LR4. And the third party products advertised all specialize in special affects. I am looking for general image enhancements. I like the LR4 workflow would like to remain in that environment instead of PS. thx

Lee - thx for the quick response. But I am slightly shocked. The ratio of "artistic" presets to general enhancement presets is really out of whack. There are only so many "vintage photograph" effects a person can stand and we (at least I) need a broader set of basic photo enhancement presets. I vaguiely remember LR3 had a few more choices than LR4, but then you get the LR3 controls which are not as good as LR4..
But it is what it is,
Can u (or anyone else) recommend how I can create an AutoColor/AutoContrast preset? Or buy such a thing from somewhere? Or is the idea to apply the PS effects as droplets while the images are imported (though that would slow things down ALOT).
    thx -yurij

  • LR3 or LR4?

Hey everyone I'm new to this. I just received LR3 in the mail today but I think I can get  LR4 upgrade for free. My problem is... do I want to! I have been checking out all the negitives on LR4. Thanks ahead for your imput.

    ted211 wrote:
I have been checking out all the negitives on LR4...
I know what you mean. Lr4 has been very tricky to learn, for lots of folks - including me.
    Still - Lr4, period. - no question...
Lots of people fretted about Lr3 when it first came out too. The new version is better.
Seriously - you can get light where you want it, dark where you want it, crank contrast to the moon without losing detail in highlights or shadows if you want, or drop midtone contrast really low but still have bright highlights and deep rich shadows... - tricky, but worth it!  Color integrity is better and you don't have to worry about anything falling apart tone-wise (or image-quality-wise) when you adjust what you want to adjust.
And, even if you don't use the RGB curves (I do), the new locals are really nice - you can recover highlights or fill shadows without worrying about painting outside the lines...
PS - Lr4 is less buggy than any other X.0 release to date, in my experience. So much so that I haven't even bothered to read the various bug reports others have submitted.
Lr3 was almost more like a necessary evil - putting everything else on hold so Lightroom's image quality could catch up to and exceed the competition. Improvements often seeable only at 100%, and only if photo was high ISO, or needed lots of sharpening or fill...
    Lr4 quality has 2 kinds:
    1. Those like Lr3 that can only (or best) be seen at 100%, since they have to do with detail and reduced masking artifacts....
    2. Those that can be seen at all magnifications, since they have to do with dramatically (or subtly) improved color and/or tone (some photos won't show much improvement - depends on the photo and how it's been edited...).
    Summary:
    ========
I'm more stoked about Lr4 than I was about Lr3, and I was pretty darn stoked about Lr3!

  • N900 needs more optimizing (slow/stutter/freeze)

I've recently fully re flashed my phone but it's still so slow to use
And it's really annoying to listen music when it just randomly stutters/stops/clips.
I tried HTC desire yesterday and darn it was so fast no jaggyness at all I cant even get 5 days uptime of my phone and it will already get so slow and choppy.
I dont have extras-devel enabled nor do I run any experimental software, I wonder what gives and if it can be fixed?
Also, where can people send stuff that really does get trough to Nokia and the developers? Submitting a ticket? They really need to get this stuff straight.
    Does everyone else experience this?

First and foremost, the speed of a CPU doesn't necessarily mean faster performance. AMD proved that with their AMD/64 range of CPUs. They trounced the Intels of the same clock speeds.
Secondly, where was the HTC Desire located, on a shop shelf?
Chances are the HTC would slow down after a few days without a reboot. It's one of the bugbears of mobile devices, specially the N900, that they don't enjoy the same memory management of their larger desktop counterparts. No swap file to use means that anything that isn't shut down completely is hogging vital resources until you reboot the device.
Part of the N900 problem is the transitions, where you go from one screen to another or navigate the menus with a nice blurry whoosh.
These transitions can be edited with a little app called "Transition Control", they can be reduced to speed things up or increased to to give a more pronounced effect.
But if your N900 is so slow that it's just about usable then you obviously have a problem in that something is hogging the CPU, which then needs further attention.

  • Photoshop Cs6 is hanging when trying to work in 3D when it wasn't before

When I first started using 3D in Photoshop it was working rather smoothly and seemed to chug along fairly fast. Then one day when I was working in it as usual and tried to perform some random action it just started hanging with the spinning blue circle for about 2 or 3 minutes. It continued to do this ever since, sometimes hanging for up to 5 minutes before performing my command. Some actions cause it to hang longer than others, such as creating a new light and changing the diffuse color of a material, which is by far the worst in terms of the amount of time it will hang. I have searched the forums and google and tried all suggestions to any problem that seemed to have a similar nature. The only time that I had a partial success was after I had uninstalled Photoshop, then ran the adobe creative suite cleaner tool, then manually searched through the registry for every reference to adobe and Photoshop I could find and deleted them. I then reinstalled Photoshop and updated it. When I started using it in 3D after that it was running smooth as butter, no hangs or stalls on anything, including creating lights and changing diffuse colors. But my joy was not long lived, as after about 2 hours of use it started to do its usual behavior of hanging again. So I tried that approach again and it did not seem to work a second or third or fourth time. So out of desperation and all out of options, I decided to run process monitor from sysinternals to see if it showed me anything even though I knew that I probably would not understand what it were showing me. I noticed a lot of errors with the results of "name not found" for registry calls, "invalid parameter" for directory quarries, and "no such file" for file reads. But the one that seems to be happening the most whenever the program is hanging is it is trying to open a file from C:\program files\Adobe\photoshop x64\required\CgShaders, but that directory is nonexistent on my system. I was hoping that someone would be able to solve this for me as 3D in Photoshop is a big part of my workflow and I am all out of ideas. I'm going to include the process monitor log file and it will be in pml format which you will need process monitor to read, but it is a very small, portable, and free program which can be downloaded from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645. The Log file Can be downloaded from http://sdrv.ms/Xxcmuu (skydrive) or https://www.box.com/s/jzdmgmdmz7xe47smalv2 (box) .

Thank you very much for your reply. And yes I have tried all of these suggestions that you have just made. And as for the GPU crash I did not notice that in there before but I also didn't look for it because every time I looked before it wasn't there, and looking at the date that was when that I was rolling back\uninstalling\reinstalling\trying modded drivers, etc., Which is probably the reason why the gpu sniper crashed.
One interesting thing that you said was whether there is the same failure in a new design as opposed to an existing one. The answer to that is yes and no. To elaborate, when the program was working as it is supposed to eve and creating new lights and positioning them did not cause any slowdown despite the file that I was working on, but after the problem starts occurring it is like a snowball rolling down a hill. Every time I open the file (the one I was working on when the problem started to happen) to continue work on it be sluggish response of Photoshop is still there and only gets worse. If I start over on a new file the program will run much more smoothly, but will still had a slight amount of sluggishness with less intensive task whereas the more intensive task such as working with lights is still moderately sluggish but not to the extent as it was working in the previous file. As you said in your post it seems the father all along I get in my document the more pronounced and time consuming the freezes become. But nonetheless wants the problem has occurred it does not go away I can only lesson that by starting from scratch, which is not very convenient.
If you look at the process monitor log file linked in my first post and search through it pretty quickly you will see photoshop doing this

It does this repeatedly over and over again, specifically when I tried to work with lights. The weird thing is that there is no directory in required called CgShaders. I see 1 CG.dll & 1 cgGL.dll in the Photoshop (64 bit) directory. To meet that just seems very strange and probably more than a coincidence and probably does not happen on everybody else's system.
This is the process monitor log file that I saved in csv format and edited the first three blocks so that it fit correctly. Open it up in wordpad and you'll see what I mean. This is what I was talking about right above.

  • Returning Yoga 3 14

well, too many things have been happening that i finally decided to return my yoga for a replacement before my 30 days was up. kept hoping the glitches would be just random occurances, but it's looking more like the unit is a lemon, or at least I hope that's all that it is. I had a yoga 2 11 previously and it ran flawlessly... so the issues with the 3 are a bit concerning...
    Issues I've come accross:
    - Fan was stuck out of box. got it working (albeit a number hours after it had been running...and running hot) by tapping on the bottom, but now there's a buzz during it's operation, which is more pronounced depending on the angle of the device..
    - Clock rate wouldn't go above it's minimum rate, regardless of power settings, unless I unplugged and replugged the power, or rebooted..
    - system will go into sleep mode when converting from tablet to laptop...sleep mode was disabled in power settings...power button still puts systems to sleep as well...
    - and the worse issue so far...when coming back from sleep, the touch screen will sometimes go crazy, with multiple visible touchpoints appearing all over the place. only way to get it to stop is to shut down and restart..
if it weren't for these issues, I'd be pretty happy with the system.. I really like the versitility of the system, which is what prompted me to get the yoga 2 originally...battery life has been great as well, getting anywhere from 6 to 9 hrs of life so far.
Like I said, I really hoping I have a lemon; Most of the items above could probably be easily fixed with a power management update. the fan most likely needs to get replaced, but the touch screen issue is a bit baffling...
Anyway, got my RMA.. a bit concerned here too cause they said I could keep the laptop while I wait for the replacement, however the RMA email said I had 10 days to return it..guess we'll wait and see. also disapointing that I can't swap the ssd's between the systems like I usually could do with office laptops, but alas...at least with the ssd's, install's are pretty **bleep** quick; another big plus - the boot up/shutdowns on this system is freakin' fast..less than 5 seconds to get to desktop...by comparison, it takes a good 10-15 seconds, sometimes more, to boot our surface 3's at the office..huge difference..
anyway, will post results. If anyone can post on their recent RMA process experiences, it would be appreciated...
    cheers!
    Steph S.

I upgraded my 128gb yoga 3 14 with a 7mm 256gb ssd. It does fit but you won't be able to use the drive housing that the original is attached to (to secure it with screws) but you don't really need it because it's a really tight fit the drive doesn't move around at all anyway. I used a bit of double sided tape to make sure it is secure anyway

  • Print module - print to file options

When creating JPEGs using the Export function of the Library module, Lightroom 4 offers you very detailed control over the export options, including automated rules for the folder/filename structure.
When creating JPEGs using "print to file" in the Print module, the controls seem to be much more limited. Notably, the folder/filename has to be specified manually for each print job.
Is there a way to keep (or append to) the original filename when exporting from the Print module, short of typing it in by hand for every single image?
(For context: My print lab requires that submitted files exactly match the print, pixel-for-pixel, for everything to work correctly. If the file doesn't match, their print driver will scale and crop until it does. So, if I use the Library module's Export function and the aspect ratio of the file is different from that of the closest available paper, two edges may get cropped. Or, in other words, I have to pad the image with white bars to fill the paper's aspect ratio if I want it to print the way I want it to. The Print module creates files that are perfect for my purposes. But, since I can't figure out how to get it to keep the filename, the back print data on the paper copies- which I will need 8 years later to find the original when a re-print is ordered- is useless.)

Thanks Effeegee. At your suggestion, I tried LR/Mogrify + ImageMagick and, with a bit of tweaking, it does exactly what I need (and far more efficiently than LR4 Print).
For other users' reference, the LR/Mogrify configuration to do this is:
In Lightroom Library -> Export, LR/Mogrify adds "Post-Process Actions". Turn on "Background Canvas" and "Compress to file size".
Under the regular "Image Sizing" control, turn on "Resize to Fit: Dimensions" and set the paper size (long side first) and printer resolution. This resizes the image to fit within the specified paper size.
Under "Mogrify Canvas", set the paper size again (in pixels, long side first), and turn on "Adjust for landscape/portrait". This pads the image with blank borders to exactly fill the specified paper size.
Note that if the short side is specified first, LR/Mogrify sometimes pads on all sides....
To minimize additional JPEG artefacts, I suspect that under Lightroom export's "File Settings" the JPEG quality should be 100 (i.e. negligible loss) and the final compression should be done only after all post-process actions, i.e. use LR/Mogrify's "Compress to given file size". (But don't quote me on that as I haven't traced the actual code path.)

  • Screen issues on a mid-2009 Macbook Pro 13"

So I have resurrected this laptop from the dead (not literally it's in fine working condition), it has been through multiple installs of linux operating systems (gave to a family member), has a new ish hard drive (5400 rpm 750 gb NOT SSD) and was upgraded to 8 gb of ram. All safely and without issue. It had always had this issue with the screen no matter what OS was on it (after around 2 years of use without any major accidents to my knowledge). It had this issue on Leopard (it's original OS), SL, haven't tried lion, ML, no Mavericks and Yosemite. To get it back to OSX, I installed Yosemite on it at first until I could find my old ML boot usb (made one years ago, when it came out). On Yosemite, the day to day operations were a disaster and on ML it's smooth sailing (not related just info to those who have a similar setup). But, anyways back to my question is this physical screen damage, damage to the GPU, or just image persistence? Also what are the options for repair (and please do not say the genius bar, I refuse to put money into a 5&1/2 year old laptop)? Btw the imprint usually only shows up in black or near place images this is taken on an all black screen and the reflection makes it look more pronounced than it is in reality.

Not having seen the MBP or used the MBP, one can only speculate as to the cause of the malfunction.  I have already mentioned the possible cures.

  • Audio begins lagging behind video in iTunes;  other video works fine

Something that appears to have started after iTunes 10.x as I don't normally play too many videos on the PC from iTunes is regarding video playback in iTunes. The longer a video plays the longer the lag between what's showing up on the screen and the audio portion. If I stop and start the video it starts off synced again and then begins lagging. If I go outside of iTunes I can play other video formats such as wmv, avi, with no trouble, DVD and BluRay playback are not affected. The video files from iTunes play fine on my iPad. I can see no obvious cause for this, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a decent high end PC running Windows 7 64 bit, with a quad core i7 processor, 6 GB of RAM, a terabyte of disk space, and an ATI 4870 HD video card.
    Thanks much!
    Chris

I'm having the same problem. As I play ted podcast, the video starts lagging behind audio, and the longer I play, the more pronounced the effect. As I pause, video and audio re-synchronize.

  • How can i monitor network traffic to debug video playback issues from a NAS?

I am having problems playing videos on my new Mini that i am using as an HTPC.
I have a brand new Mac Mini running Lion with a 2.7 i7 processor and 8GB of RAM with a wired connection to a switch. .
My switch is a NETGEAR ProSafe GS108T-200NAS set to default settings. I haven't had a chance to start messing with VLAN settings or anything else. There is a bit of a learning curve on my part on this end.
My NAS is a ReadyNAS Pro (RNDP6000) with 3 x 1 TB hitachi ultrastar (HUA722010CLA330) drives and a 1.5 TB seagate (ST31500341AS) drive setup in RAID config using X-RAID2.
The problem I am having is video playback when accessing large video files off of the NAS.  These are typically 1080 HD mkv files.
I have tested movies as small as 7.5GB with only slight stutters on occasion.  I tried a 10.5GB movie and the stalling was much more pronounced. Movies larger than 11GB are completely unwatchable stalling every minute or so.
I have also tried large movies on the local drive and that is not a problem at all - they play back just fine.  Beautiful playback in hidef.  Mind you, some of these are the same files that were stalling over the network.
I have also noticed that some other network devices get kicked off the network when a movie is playing.
I think it has something to do with the transfer speed of files over the network and the switch - i am no expert at this mind you.
I am wondering if there is some sort of utility that i can use to monitor network activity on the mini so that i can fix my problem.  Or has anyone made chages in their switch settings to optimize data trasfer speeds.
    Any advice or recommendations on.
    Thank you all!

OK, I did a couple of things and ran things a couple of times.
First what I did settings wise:
I enabled jumbo frames on the Mac Mini, ReadyNAS Pro, and the Netgear GS108T switch.  All with MTU set to 9000.
I went ahead and enabled jumbo frames on the rest of the computers on the network just in case.
After these changes I ran into the same problems with videos timing out - very annoying and frustrating as you can imagine.
Then I started playing with device configurations.  My original configuration was NAS > Netgear switch > Mac Mini. I went ahead and switched the switch to an Airport Extreme I have as my WAP and the setup looked like this - NAS > Airport Extreme > Mac Mini.
Well, long story short, no go.  It appears to me that the NAS is the one having issues providing the necessary data at the proper speed.  I also tried playing sopme movies off of the NAS onto a desktop i have and had the same issues - choppy frames and crashing movies.  I even tried connecting wirelessly to see if that would work.
BTW, I have the Mac accessing the file system using CIFS.
I don't know what else I could do.
I am going to have to go to the Netgear forums to see if i can figure this out.  Hopefully, I can get things going to be able to help some people out.
If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.
My only other alternative is spending $2000 for the thunderbolt capable NAS that Apple sells - it's only money!

  • Why can i not make a compilation (Also adding artwork sometimes doesn't work)

Has anyone experienced this issue?                                                                                     I am on itunes 12.1.1.4 windows (64bt).
When making compilations (grouping songs together as one album) i found some would work and at others times others wouldn't, i found this with the artwork too.
It seemed random at first and i couldn't find a solution. BUT!! I am here to report after many hours, i found the fix.
The trouble lies with the length of the album name, not sure if it also lies with song names too and artist names ect.
But for me, i was in albums section and fed up with seeing 40 or so songs which belonged to the same Album all on there own when they should be together. Also having no artwork. For though's that dont know how to solve this!
Select the songs you would like to bring together as one (compilation)
Select the first, hold shift and select the last.
Right click and select get info.
In the first column under details scroll to the bottom and tick the box that says
ALBUM IS A COMPILATION OF SONGS BY VARIOUS ARTIST.
In my experience this would not work all the time. so this brings me back to my original point. Reduce the size of the name of the album, this has to be done on all the songs which you can do manually, where they are originally stored in windows file. There is many tutorials online for this so i wont go into detail.
(you will have to delete songs/albums from itunes and then after fix re-link in to itunes)
Also my advice which is what i did because i didn't want to do them one by one, is to find a program that does it automatically. there's many out there that are free to try or just free. But anyway i hope this helps others.. As soon as i reduced the ALBUM name size.. compilation worked as normal, and so did Album artwork..
TIP: Find album art work you want, download and save to desktop or a folder you can find easily, right click album in itunes, select get info, artwork column and add artwork...(this of course is if itunes doesnt do the job for you)  ENJOY..PEACE

I suspect that your suggestion to "reduce the size of the name of the album" is actually ensuring that the album name is identical for every track.  iTunes is somewhat sensitive to non-obvious variations in some of its metadata values (suggestions include trailing spaces, inclusion of non-printing characters, etc.) - this seems to be more pronounced in iTunes 12 than in earlier releases.  Another way to do the same thing is a add a dummy character such as "x" at the start of the common album name; if this then groups the tracks correctly, then edit it again to remove the dummy character and restore the correct name.  I have album names in my library that are over 100 characters long without issues.  I can't find a reference to an actual maximum length - I'm sure that there is one, though its possible that this is more a limitation of the embedded properties of media files in Windows rather than an inherent limitation of iTunes.  Your suggestion to "Reduce the size of the name of the album, this has to be done on all the songs which you can do manually, where they are originally stored in windows file." is OK as long as you do so before adding the songs to your iTunes library.  If you do so afterwards you may end up with apparent inconsistencies - iTunes will only update what you see when you play any songs that had their metadata edited directly in the media files.
You can achieve the same result by editing fields within iTunes - just select all the tracks that should be part of the album you're interested in (use Shift-Click to select contiguous tracks, Ctrl-Click for those that are not), then right-click > Get Info.  Sometimes you'll see an obvious mis-match of values if iTunes displays "Mixed" in grey text in the Album field - in this case you can just type in the correct value and it will update all the tracks. Otherwise use the "prepend a dummy character" method as above to enforce identical values.
In general, compilation albums (i.e., those containing tracks by several different artists) will be grouped correctly in iTunes if:
the Album value is identical, and the "Part of a Compilation" flag is set for all tracks, or
the Album value and the Album Artist value are identical for all tracks
The "Part of a Compilation" flag is really only necessary for older models of iPod that don't recognize the Album Artist tag - the second option above gives some additional flexibility, in that you can decide how you want to label the "collection of artists" responsible for the album (if you leave Album Artist blank and set the "Part of a Compilation" flag then iTunes will automatically list it as being by "Various Artists") and you can also set the Sort Album Artist value.  As an example of the latter, I prefer to sort the classical albums in my library by composer rather than artist; I have a number of albums that contain several works by the same composer but performed by different orchestras/conductors/soloists.  Using the second approach listed above, I can:
set the Artist value on individual tracks to the correct value - this will not be a common value for all the tracks making up the album
set the Album Artist to "Various Artists"
set the Sort Album Artist to the name of the composer - so, for an album collecting several works by Beethoven, this would be set to "Beethoven, Ludvig van" and would be listed along with other recordings of Beethoven's works.
Two other consequences of the alternative approaches to tagging compilations:
using the "Part of a Compilation" flag:
all compilations will appear at the end of an artist-sorted list of albums
if you have configured iTunes to manage your media folders, the songs from each compilation will be stored in iTunes Media\Music\Compilations\album_title
    using the Album Artist method:
compilations will be sorted based on the Album Artist (or, if set, Sort Album Artist) value - so if you set the Album Artist to "Various Artists" and leave the Sort Album Artist blank, these will be sorted with the V's - in my case, such compilations sit between Van der Graaf Generator and Suzanne Vega (sorted, of course, as "Vega, Suzanne")
if you have configured iTunes to manage your media folders, the songs from each compilation will be stored in iTunes Media\Music\album_artist\album_title
