  • Pixmantec RawShooter Migration Tool - Released

    It's finally been released!!
Find it and more info here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Pixmantec_RawShooter_Migration_Tool
Doesn't work with the RawShooter settings for:
    * Hue
    * Color balance
    * Noise reduction
    * Detail extraction
    * Curve/levels adjustments
(I don't think it works for crop, rotation, flagging, ratings, etc . . but I haven't tried on images with crop/rotation. There is a link on the above page to a tool that transfers flags, ratings, etc . . .)
Personally, I've downloaded it and tried it out on a few directories . . . maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it doesn't seem to work too well to me. Also, the Vibrance slider was much stronger in RSP than it is in LR, but it does a direct translation (if you had a setting of 3 in RSP, the setting in LR is also 3, which is nowhere near powerful enough). I hope I'm doing something wrong with it. If not, I'd hate to have seen how this looked back in March, when they postponed it indefinitely to work on the quality of the translation.
Either way, I appreciate the work and effort put into it and satisfying the RSP customers! I love Lightroom and will continue to use it. Thanks Adobe!

This release is generating surprising little conversation. Good thing it's finally here, but I have to admit, that it's a tool that was released way too late and still doesn't seem to work well enough to be truly practical in the RS->LR conversion. Not being able to transfer even color temperature settings to LR is a little strange. I also wonder how hard it truly would have been for the curves settings to transferred in the process. Of course it makes it harder, that the LR curves is "crippled" compared to RS curves and doesn't allow so accurate control.
and I'm STILL waiting for a Levels tool to be included in to LIghtroom! Why of why can't LR have a levels tool...

My RawShooter registered email address has changed. How do I get my new email address to Adobe so I can receive my free download of Lightroom 1.0?Thank you...

  • Note to moderators - mark sticky notes

I only occasionally come to this forum and each time i am a bit disoriented on the top of the forum trying to figure out which messages are sticky and which are new.
Can someone edit those message titles to all have *** or to have [sticky] on the front or back end of the message title.
I am not sure if all of the current stickies are relevant, but that is for someone other than me to decide.
    Thanks for your consideration,
    Rob.

    Rob,
First 3 items are Folders (i.e. sub forums) - they're sticky by default and we cannot easily add markers to them, even if it made sense to do so, which it doesn't.
Fourth item down "Performance & Auto-write XMP" is already sticky and locked. You'll see that it has **- before and after the thread title.
Fifth item down "Pixmantec RawShooter Premium FAQ" is like the fourth (i.e. it's sticky), and it has **- before and after the thread title".
Sixth item down "Lightroom 1.4, Important Note from Adobe, March 16, 2007" is a note from the Product Manager. It's also sticky, but on a short life span (i.e. it will cut loose and drift down by itself in the near future).
    >I am not sure if all of the current stickies are relevant, but that is for someone other than me to decide.
It's me or one of the other Hosts who might happen by who decides what is sticky or isn't, what can be seen or made invisible, etc, etc, etc. Occasionally an old thread/post will be sticky
and visible when it shouldn't be, that's an oversight on my part. Since I can see everything it's not always easy to pick out the odd thread where this happens. Furthermore, some threads might be set up by another Host but they forget to set access for the rest of us. When that happens we need to get the Sysop to fix the problem.
Finally, threads you haven't read will have a red flag. Threads you have read will not. So, distinguishing between the two is fairly easy.

  • Thank You Adobe and Lightroom Team!

I just wanted to publicly thank Adobe and the Lightroom Team. I appreciate all of your hard work over the last year or more. Lightroom is a great program (even if there are bugs and issues that we all complain about on here). I love it.
I also wanted to thank you for the offer that was extended to the Pixmantec Rawshooter Premium customers. I was sorely disappointed to hear that Pixmantec had been bought by Adobe. But now that I've used Lightroom, I am pleased and very thankful for the goodwill and hospitality that was ushered forth to us. I look forward to using Lightroom (and updated versions of it) for many years to come! Thank you again for taking care of your customers and making new ones!
    Thank you,
    Jonah Garoutte

I use the free versions of picmnatic for about a year when LRbeta came out.
    WOW!
Being ever fearfull of Betas I tiptoed into the fray.
    WOW!
Great beta, and now I am looking forward to finally loading LR.1
    I am a happy camper.
I can use LR on a very simple level: Choosing, cropping, color, contacts and web gallery.
OR really MONK it and fill out ALL database infow on each choice starting with the copyright symbol to INFINITY!!
I can definatly grow with LR the same way I am with PhotoShop CS2.
    Thanks Adobe,
    Yours,

  • Lightroom for Rawshooter user with now defunct email address

As a registered user of Rawshooter Premium 2006 I would very much like to make use of the free Lightroom V1.0 offer. Unfortunately my internet provider stopped providing a service so the email address I am registered with Pixmantec with is no longer valid.
Does anyone know if I will still be able to get a copy and if so, how?
    Cheers

OK you can ignore this as I have already seen that there will be a FAQ for people who have chnaged email addresses. Duh.

  • Serial number missing from Lightroom activation e-mail.

As a Pixmantec RS Premium user I recieved my Lightroom 1.0 activation email yesterday. When I clicked on the link in IE7 there was no serial number. I tried to cut and paste into Firefox and again there was no serial number. Now I am left out in the cold with the following message:
"Sorry but we are unable to fulfill your download request. The URL has already been used."
Whilst Adobe said that the URL would be available for one download only the activation email said nothing about turning off email filters or what to do in the event of there not being a serial number present. I can't believe I am the only person to have experienced this problem. If anyone out there has had the same problem I would love to see how you are getting on as the last 24 hours have been so frustrating.

See the big FAQ thread at the start of the forum... you are not alone, but most seem to have had this issue dealt with.

  • Windows XP file/folder handling does not work? (RSP Rules!)

Sorry if this has been asked many times before, but a forum search on "folder" does not return anything ??? (amazing)
I am trying to make sense out of where and when to use folders and collections and I wish there would be more info in the help/manual.
Lesson learned so far: you can spend an awful lot of time flagging images as rejected and then delete them from a quick collection, only to find out that they are only removed from the (logical) quick collection, not from the (physical) folder on the file system. @!x$
Now, it seams that any folder action does either not work at all or only works partially:
    - I cannot import an empty folder, to put images in later
    - I cannot drag and drop more than one file at a time to a folder
    - When I create a new folder, I never get to see it or name it in Lightroom. It gets created on the file system however, as "new folder (x)".
Why are there no settings under "preference" where to put libraries, back-ups of libraries, which library to use at startup, where and how to create/store previews and their lifetime and so on?
Also, there should be a much more convenient way in the handling of multiple computers and creating/restoring backups!
Reading some of the endless complaints about file corruptions and file losses, I think I will return to RawShooter Premium untill I finally get the feeling that my images and the work on them are safe within Lightroom. RSP is also WAY more snappy and responsive (except for the slide show)!

Jeff: You truly offered some amazing insight here! I really thought that Adobe bought Pixmantec for their technology and for the wizzards that drove that technology. Now you made it clear that all that is limited to "inspiration". Wow! So, why DID Adobe buy Pixmantec? Market share? Take the most brilliant and cheap competitor off the market? Some other reason???
Apart from that: I DO know that writing software is not easy. It must be really unpleasant for the hard working "scary brilliant" experts with a serious track history to hear people complain about issues like file handling on a particular operating system instead of admiring their brilliant ideas and concepts.
Alas, this is life: if you would buy a car you would bring it back to the garage to complain about the lock in the trunk that opens at awkward times leading you to loose your groceries instead of talking to those people about how magnificent that particular car takes you trough corners at 100 mph.
And I still believe that the RSP folks did a better job with their version 1 than Adobe did with LR, knowing that Lightroom is more complicated than RSP and taking into consideration that the Adobe people have a much longer history and experience with Photoshop/Album/Bridge. So I would say Adobe can learn a lot from the RSP boys. Just do it!
Tim: as I'm planning to move from RSP to LR (maybe wait until 1.1), the most important starting information I'm looking for right now is how to set up my filesystem and the LR database for the most efficient way of working and for the "most" data security. Neither the LuLa tutorial nor the help file/manual seem to offer much information on this -I believe extremely important- topic.
All this aside from what seems like Windows file handling bugs to me, hopefully adressed in version 1.1

  • Windows vs Mac Performance - Mac wins at the moment

I can tell you from firsthand experience that Lightroom is very useable on a Mac but significantly less so on WinXP.
I have a 1yr old XP laptop, 2GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 128MB ATI X1400, 7200RPM hard drive with 60% free space where my library and photos reside (separate partition). My 8,000+ 1DMII .cr2 (mainly RAW) photos had to be imported without the create standard previews selected and rendered later. I also turn off write XMP when using LR as it slows down my system too much. My photos have between 5-10 keywords each from previous input using iView. The develop module works fine, but it is the library that is painful -- takes too long to try and rearrange my keywords into a hierarchy. In fact, any type of keywording or metadata changes makes my system hang for a few seconds. Forget about using Firewire 400 external hard drive, it degrades my LR performance even further. I can't imagine how people with older hardware configurations cope but I guess it's all relative to what you're used to.
I come from C1Pro, Rawshooter Premium and ACR but I bought and read Martin Evening's book and Luminous Landscape's video tutorials so consider myself fairly knowledgeable with respect to using LR. Both the book and video made LR seem like it was a smooth and very useable piece of software but I noticed both authors used Macs.
I now have a MacBookPro 15", 2.16GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, 128MB X1600 BUT a 5400 RPM internal hard drive with 80% free. I run my photo library & database on a 5400 RPM USB 2.0 external hard drive and this setup smokes my WinXP setup! The library module with keywording, metadata changes etc is very smooth and the difference between running on two similar systems but with different OS has led me to believe that LR is currently much more refined on the Mac. I can even leave write XMP turned on and it doesn't take any significant performance hit. Scrolling through pages of thumbnails in grid view is fast.
My guess is that performance in Windows will catch up to Mac in future updates. I understand people's frustrations with Lightroom, as I share them, but it's the closest thing to a one-stop shop that I've seen and I am eagerly anticipating updates from Adobe.
In the meantime, my suggestion for those people who MUST use LR now and want the kind of performance they were used to in RawShooterPremium (as a frame of reference) is to use a Mac if they have that option. I'm not more loyal to one OS than another which is why I have both, but I believe in choosing the right tool for the job - same goes for my choice of camera equipment. To run LR smoothly, there's no doubt in my mind that Mac users have it better at the moment. Maybe that's why many LR authors are using Macs as well.
And not to sound critical of new users, but it wouldn't hurt to at least watch the Luminous Landscape Lightroom tutorials before posting questions as I believe it's the best $14.95 I've ever spent on educational material.

No doubt LR runs better on a full blown Mac at this point. But, suggestions that LR users move over to Mac hardware offer a costly solution to a problem that has more dimensions than OS considerations--given that available Ram is 2 gigs or more on either platform.
In order to see just what could be done to maximize LR performance, I put it on a insertable, boot drive with nothing but LR and basic WinXP Pro SP2 on it--no internet, no security overhead, nothing but basic OS and LR. It is noticeably faster than when used on a drive crowded with the usual software variety and load with all the, often redundant, calls on the system from background services, virus checkers, internet connections, etc, etc, etc.
But, it is simply not a fast app by either today's standards of what we expect or in comparison to other apps or combinations of apps that roughly equal what LR will do. The solution to that lies with Adobe engineers--not in throwing money at a different OS.
By the way, I am resonably confident that some serious reengineering will significantly improve LR, hopefully some large portion of that in the next release.
In the meantime, if you want a 20% or so boost, throw it on a small fast boot drive and get a quick change drive tray so you can alternate, or interchange, boot drives in about 10 seconds and not only get better performance out of LR--or Creative Suite, or whatever-- but get lightning fast boot itmes as well--that will cost you about $50--considerably cheaper than changing platforms.

  • Why does LR crash when Import command is used? The only solution I can see is to restart my PC. Issue pre-dates latest LR upgrade.

LR has stopped working several times when I use the Import command (button and from File menu) - Windows gives the options of waiting or closing LR. I have waited for 30 mnutes but nothing happens. This pre and post-dates the latest LR upgrade. I'm using Windows8 and have only had problems in recent days. The only solution I can see is to restart my PC. What's happening - any ideas?

I have uploaded the catalog file and the photo included in that catalog (a Canon 20D .CR2 file) to RapidShare at:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/139240759/LR_Test_Catalog.lrcat.html
I am assuming that the associated "LR_Test_Catalog Previews.lrdata" folder isn't required too and will be recreated for you?
    John:
Yes, I imported some .CR2 files taken from home to the office and imported them into an existing catalog there. And yes, they're shown okay. Plus other 2006 files (from the same camera, I usually import into both) are okay too. There are some .XMP files in some 2006 folders, but not many. I will take the catalogue (sorry, got caught up in the Yank spelling) from home to the office on Monday and try importing that, hadn't thought of that. The photo's won't be in the same folder structure though and not all will be there.
Apologies for not answering the other question, I am a person who came from the Pixmantec RawShooter background and would have still been using that program then. The .RWSettings folders are still in the folder structure. I am pretty careful with my .CR2 files and try not to use any programs that would directly edit them. I have backups on DVD, but I haven't tried them. I also have another copy of some 2006 files on another HDD and have tried importing them tonight into the new catalog with no change in behaviour.
I will also try setting the camera date to 2006, take some new pics and see what happens.
Apologies, too, about the apostrophes, my dear Mum would be most embarressed at me. Can't edit them now, history has passed by!
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • How to paste exposure setting to multiple images

    Hi all:
I know this question has probably been asked many times but I couldn't find any answer using the search so please be patient with me. :)
I came from the world of RawShooter Premium and I realized that my version of RSP can't read RAW file from the Canon 30D so I got the Adobe Lightroom to process my images. All is well until I decide to paste the exposure setting from one image to multiple images. I know there is a copy and paste button in the "develop" mode but it doesn't paste the settings (color temp, exposure, noise, etc) to all the images even when I highlighted the images I want to paste. I can do that in RSP, which save a lot of time.
Can anyone shed some light on this? I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ben

In develop, copy and paste only works on the selected image. You can sync or auto sync (control-sync) there.
If you want to copy and paste to multiple images using shift-control-C and shift-control-V, you can do that in grid mode.

  • I just found out about the switch from Elements to Adobe Revel. HELP

I do not want to spend any money  on something I rarely use. I also do not want to grant "rights" to any person or corporation for my family pictures.
Will I need to delete my account?.

Hi. There is not a switch from Elements. The switch is from Photoshop.com to Revel. Elements will work as it always did with the exception of communicating with Photoshop.com sharing and storage since that service is being discontinued.
In additon, Revel is free as long as you don't want to upload more than 50 files a month.
Check out these FAQ's and try Revel. After that, if you do not want your account, we can delete it.
