Place in InDesign

Is there a way to script the File/Place/In InDesign option so that you don't always have to do it manually? A shortcut would be nice but I can't find any on this item.
Brad

Brad -
Do you want to do the Place from Bridge?
But the answer is certainly. The bridge script that makes a contact sheet in InDesign places the frames and images.

  • .pdf with no security settings won't place in InDesign

A received .pdf file with no security settings will not place in InDesign.  I receive a "This PDF document was saved with security settings which prevents its pages from being placed."  Even when I save it as a new .pdf with no security settings, it won't place.  I'm currently using Acrobat Pro X.  Please advise.  Thanks!

It could be you need to restore your InDesign preferences. Follow these directions:

Whatever happened to the File: Place: In InDesign Script?! I want it back!

I think Configurator will happen for InDesign CC, just not yet.
For now, you could write a startup script.
I only suggest these as alternatives. It would have been better if Adobe had made it an option. Very heavy handed and another thing that is going to P loyal users off.

  • Place in Indesign Missing from CS4 after CS5 install

I have noticed that on two of our macs after installing CS5 that the Place in Indesign command in CS4 bridge is no longer appearing in the list anymore, all other choices are there, Does anyone have a fix for this. - thanks!

From another Forum Gabe Harbs was so kind to provide a solution with a script that needs a little modification. Here is his message:

Here’s a Bridge script (that I wrote over a year ago) which adds a context menu to relink the selected file to the currently selected frame in InDesign.
You install the script in: App Support > Adobe > Startup Scripts [Version] > Adobe Bridge.
It would be a pretty simple task to modify the script to place the file instead of relinking...

  • Best way to save illustrator files to place in Indesign

    Hello,
I have played with many options. but can someone tell me the best way to save an illustrator file, so I can place it InDesign and it will print faster yet still hold true to quality and color?
Is it .ai, eps, pdf, tiff, or .png ..I didn't like .gif, or jpeg.....
The place time and print time is brutal in InDesign and when I a create PDF file the redraw in acrobat is terrible, if they were placed .ai files.
So just looking for the best case scenario to have faster printing and placing in InDesign and no redraw in PDF files.
Just looking for some guidance and advise.
    thanks!

    Hello,
What exactly is that flattening doing? I see it puts everything in one layer...is that all it does?
When I place them in InDesign, the performance is about the same and when I make the PDF, they still rebuild there.
Are there any options for flattening, or just the flatten from the layers menu?
    maybe I am missing something.
    thanks!!
    babs
Flattening is not just a reference to layers, it is a reference to transparency effects (opacities, soft masks such as drop shadows, and blend modes). Flattening makes a mess of the file. If you don't have to flatten, don't.
If you do have to flatten, do it from InDesign. This means placing the native Illustrator file saved with PDF compatibility (default behavior)
Again, never flatten unless you have to, and save it for last. If you don't need to flatten, output from InDesign using PDF/X-4. When you preserve transparency, output time is sped up considerably, and you don't end up with stitching artifacts (white lines) in the PDF.

  • Place in Indesign not working

    Hey guys
I know this has happened to others but havent found an answer. I have all the latest CC 2014 versions, and my copy of Bridge doesn't have the PLACE IN INDESIGN option avaliable from the contextual menu. Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks!

Found a related post. Check if it helps.

  • Is it possible to place an InDesign page into the same InDesign document

I'm able to place an InDesign page into another InDesign document, but am not able to place an InDesign page an InDesign document when the page is part of the same InDesign document. Is there any way around this limitation?

PDF is the better bet (although you might as well save a copy of your document). Snippets have all kinds of problems for this because of master items and the fact that from a script you can only export individual items as snippets (although you can group them and export that).

  • Problems importing images or text via "place" in inDesign CC 2014

I just installed inDesign CC 2014 on my new iMac. I have a major problem when trying to "place" objects/text files in a document. It takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes or more to populate each and every window on the path to the file I need. What is this? Is this a known issue?

I posted this on the forum page thread:
To "populate each window" : after hitting the "place" command keys (cmd+d) on the mac, the window that opens is EMPTY of files and folders. The delay is several minutes now, also on every subsequent window down the path to the actual file that I want to import. Meanwhile, these files are immediately visible in the finder windows when clicking on the desktop. My OX is Yosemite 10.10.1. This lag happens before getting to the stage of seeing the miniature in the mouse pointer.
Is this a known issue in the new CC inDesign 2014? Is Adobe aware of it?

  • How to place an indesign page with hyperlinks in another indesign file, such that the links work?

I have a page of text with hyperlinks in a master indesign file.
I place that file into another indesign file.
(It is like an html include file for a webpage. In this way i only have to update the file in one place.)
But when i export the indesign file to pdf, the hyperlinks fail to work.
They work in the original but not in the second.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Abby Eagle

My apologies. My tests were done using URLs. They function in Acrobat regardless of their state in InDesign.
Aside to Bob: Since I had just made a PDF that worked, I mistook your "Since when" to mean since when won't a placed ID file work? I guess I was blind sided by the fact that the only hyperlinks I ever come into contact with are full URLs.
If Abbey's situation is as I envisioned -- that the placed files are more akin to smaller graphics within the layout of a page rather than discreet pages at all -- then is this not a insolvable problem given how InDesign works now?

  • Place multiple InDesign document pages (ImportedPages)

    Hello,
I need a way to place multiple pages from an InDesign document in much the same way as the sample PlaceMulitpagePDF.jsx does but with InDesign documents rather than PDFs.
The following is the critical line where the PDF page number to import is set:
    app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = myCounter;
What is the equivalent command for setting the InDesign document page number when choosing a page to import?
    I have tried using:
    Application.ImportedPageAttribute.pageNumber
    but without result.
    TIA

    Why, thank you Mr. Schneider!
I am embarassed to say that my problem was a couple of typos, (reading the Zanelli script made that obvious to me). The command should have been:
    app.importedPageAttributes.pageNumber
Note the lowercase "i" on "imported" and the "s" after "Attribute."
Your help is very much appreciated!

  • Can't place and Indesign CS5 created swf back in an Indesign CS5 file?

I hope someone can help me?  I have created an animated swf file in Indesign CS5 using the amination and timing panels, for use in an interactive PDF.  The swf has exported correctly and plays as expected in the browser.  However, when I go to select the swf to place it in my Indesign file its greyed out and unable to be selected.
I have basically tried to follow Rufus Deuchler's method to incorporate animations into a PDF http://tv.adobe.com/watch/csinsider-design/indesign-creating-interactive-pdfs-with-page-tu rn-and-flash-animations/. In the video his swf is available for selection when using the place command and everything else I have found on the web talks about importing swf's into indesign files being a standard feature in CS5 and CS5.5.
I have tried re exporting the swf by different names and to different folders; quitting Indesign and restarting it; trying to place the swf into a completely different indesign file; going through all the Indesign Preferences to see if there is an option to "turn on" swf import and I have even tried following Rufus's steps and export options exactly when creating the swf.  Nothing has worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have screen shots and the swf I am trying to import which I can email if that would help anyone ease my growing frustration.
    Cheers
    Pete

    Hi John,
Thanks for the extra information.  I did as you suggested and downloaded Onyx and rebuilt the launch services database. But only after finding out that my harddrive was corrupted to some extent after both Onyx and Disk Utility found a problem when I verified my Hard Drive.  Anyway I sorted that out, executed the rebuild launch services database via Onyx and unfortunately still no luck with with being able to place a swf in my indesign file.  Very frustrating.
The only other thing I thought I would mention is that upon verifying the disk with Onyx it initially presented me with a "Choose Application" dialog box with the question "Where is ARM?" at the top.  I didn't know what this meant and I couldn't find any information on the web so I chose "cancel" and then Onyx went through the verification process without a problem and lauched the Onyx application proper.  I'm clutching at straws now but I was wondering if not selecting an application could have undermined the rebuilding of the LS datatbase?
Again, and help you or anyone else can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • PDF will not place in InDesign

I am running Windows 7 and CS5. I rely on being able to place PDFs into InDesign as a part of my production job. I get an error while trying to place the PDF into InDesign "Failed to open the PDF file."  This has never happened until the system and software upgrade. Any ideas besides using jpegs? They do not generate high enough quality results.
    Thanks for any help!

I have just begun encountering this issue. I am also on Windows 7, having upgraded from CS 4 to CS 5.5 a few weeks ago.
It never happens with PDFs I create myself--typically it occurs with advertisers' files.  "Show Import Options" was the first thing I checked.  For a couple of ads, "transparent background" mattered--but for one ad I had to turn it off and the other I had to turn it on.  So I know that choices made when generating the PDF sometimes make a difference.
In more recent situations, I have tried to place an ad PDF that I had successfully placed into CS4 IDD.  Also kept getting the message "Failed to open the PDF file."  I finally managed to put it in the new issue of my magazine by opening up the prior issue (allowing CS5.5 to convert the file without saving), copying the PDF, and pasting it into my current, CS5.5 file.
Now I'm trying to place a PDF of a USPS form 3526. I've saved it in Acrobat 10 with info in fields I'd created.  It contains only text, no graphics, fonts are embedded.
I'd successfully placed my earlier versions (done with Acrobat 8 or earlier) for several years, in CS 4.
I saved as an Optimized PDF (flattened the PDF's form fields, stripped out pretty much everything such as metadata, tags, thumbnails, etc, and set the compatibility for Acrobat 7.0 and later (the document's default when I acquired it).  Still get the error.
If I save the PDF with compatibility of Acrobat 9 (and 10) and later, this is Indesign's error message to me upon placement:
So now, short of rasterizing the PDF in PhotoShop, I've run out of ideas to place it in Indesign.
Anybody else have experience with any of this?

  • Would like a switch to embed/unembed file placement in Indesign

I would really like a switch to automatically set the default to link or embed files as they are placed.  Right now the default is set to link and there is no way to change that.
Here's my workflow to illustrate why I really need that:
Assembly: When I start designing a document I go into fierce image collection mode.   I use my image libraries, I take screen shots (which go in the desktop, and I hunt from elsewhere.  In Photoshop for instance, the default is set to embed, just as in Illustrator and I first make the initial images assembly.  To have to worry about putting all the images that I want into a folder and decide on that before I've even gone into this initial layout process in creatively counterintuitive, at least to me (maybe others out there).   Further, when I use some images from a program such as Realmac Ember (yes I use Bridge but I love Ember as well) I get a real mess -- in this case InDesign links the file to a very obscure hidden folder, which strangely enough almost serves my purposes because the file is seemingly managed without my having to worry about it.  But this leads to a bloated hidden library issue, and when I unembed the desired files the copy that was created in the hidden Ember folder is not deleted.  If the file were placed and the copy is created right into the InDesign document at placement time I'm guessing this wouldn't be an issue.
Refining:  Then I start to go over, move things around, delete some images and only would I like to think about unembedding so I can work in Photoshop editing etc.  But by that time I will create a folder to store these unembedded files.  Easily 50% of the files should remain embedded and I don't want to have to mess with their file location and management unless I really want to unembed and edit afterwards.
The idea for the switch is to just turn on automatic file embedding at placement time, and to turn it off when you don't need or want that behavior anymore.   It's set to be automatically off for everyone who's used to the traditional workflow but people like me can turn it on and off.

In one of my forms I used similar concept, however I used Button and Image overlay on each other and have code under Button Click event....But the code attaches any document/file the user chose attach rather than just screenshot....this could be starting point for you to try some thing you want.... Following is the code I used....
var aInstance = this.parent.index; //this is the table row instance in your case
var selectFileName = "ScreenShot" + aInstance; //this is to assign a relative name for each image they like to upload
var doc = event.target;doc.importDataObject(selectFileName); //opens the dialog box for user to navigate and select any file to attach
    var MyPar1 = doc.getDataObject(selectFileName);
var filename = MyPar1.path; //get the file path in to a variable so you can extract the name of the file they select and determine type of the file and do some exception coding.
    Good luck,

  • Object that updates in multiple places in InDesign CS5?

Is there a function in Indesign which you can create a master object with any attributes... lets with say images and text... then have the ability to place it in the doc in multiple instances and be updatable from one place?
I have a larger document that I need to create in which a repeating callout box has to be inserted about 20-30 times in the doc. It may require some changes at some point, and I don't want to have to update every instance of the box every time there is a change to be made.
Some of this could be accomplished with object styles I know. But you can't attach images to object styles, can you?
I am looking for something like a master page, but for an insertable object... does this exist in InDesign?
    Thanks

Seems to me that being able to place linked files is the built-in function in InDesign to do this.
