Place tags in PSE 12

I am getting more and more frustrated by recent changes after having to update to PSE 12 from PSE 8 after a friend updated my computer system.
I am seventy seven and not compouter literate but I do try very hard to understand how things work
I have discovered after help from others how to add a tag to a place name but I have to do that via a world map which I do not like as it apprears in the Place tags as UK then a drop down with the new place tag.
Here is an attemot at a screen shot of the problem and how I would like tags to appear in futrure. ie as Strumpshwa, Titchwell etc NOT as UK>England>West Tisted. Do hope I have explained myself clearly so that someone can help.
IN PSE 8 it was so simple
Nobody more surpruied than me to see this screen shot appear
Over to you please for simple instructiosn.
Thank you,
Brian.

Hi Neileh,
Thank you so much for all your suggestions but I think I have finally reached terminal despair .
I did try and send an email to PSE but they seem to me to have a contemptible approach to users and I could not find how to send an email to PSE but kept being returned to forums.
Fir the time being I have had enough and I am growing more depressed by the lack of customer support and could not recommend the programme to others.
It may of course just be my ignorance of computers but I cannot be alone and so I am left with my present experience that PSE staff are unhelpful.
Huge thanks to you for taking so much trouble and I feel I have let you down for which I apologies.
The adding of PLACES in the Keyword drop down list is a palliative to my mind and not a cure for the problem as reasonable users would expect.
Please if you crack it please email me.
Warmest regards,
Brian

  • Importing existing GPS tags to PSE 12 places

    Good evening,
after making my first steps in the world of RAW-photography with lightroom, I wanted to add the ability to edit digital photos. After comparing my options, I decided to choose Elements 12.
As I already had some keyword-tags in Lightroom, I imported them to Elements - so far, so good. But what I did not find so far was the possibility to "import" my GPS-tagged metadata into the places-tags. Seemingly I have to retag them again, which is annoying, but would be a reasonable way for existing photos.
When going on a photo trip, I currently use a GPX-tracklog to easily add the necessary GPS-information via lightroom. Is there any way to do so in Elements 12?
I wonder what is your workflow when adding GPS data to your photos?
Thank you for sharing your ideas,
    all the best,
    Gilhin

    HI Jon,
thank you for getting back to me. This process refers to using PSE as an external editor. Unfortunately this is not what I am looking for.
What I like on the PSE Organizer is that it adds places in a hierarchic manner (Like Germany => Bavaria => Munich => Marienplatz) and that I can change the name of the last level. That is what I am missing in Lightroom. All my pictures are geotagged, so I do not want to retag them again.
Therefore I am either looking for a possibility that PSE recognizes the GPS data or that anyone recommends a Lightroom plugin that will do the same in Lightroom.
    Thank you for your ideas,
    kind regards,
    Connor

  • How to create Sub- Category tags in PSE 12?

I want to be able to create Sub- Category tags in PSE 12 without using the map view. I have tags United States with sub- categories South Carolina and Charleston. I had no problem doing this in PSE11.

I found a very convoluted solution to creating a Places sub-category keytag in PSE12. First I created a new tag by placing an image on a map (using search). The resulting tag created a specfic location such as a street address. I then renamed the new tag with city name. The renamed tag can then be applied to all other desired and selected images. This is much more difficult than in PSE 11.  Is there an easier way?

  • Is it possible to create "places" tags without the maping feature?

Is it possible to create "places" tags without the maping feature? I updated from PSE 10 (where I created my own list of "places,") to PSE 12, where "places" seems to require the mapping feature. I would prefer not to use the map, and stick to my old way.
    Thanks for any help!
    Tom

Apparently, not only is the mapping feature required, but once the GPS-loaded Place tag is created, it is not listed in alphabetical order with other place tags.  It is listed by country, then by state, then by title!!  !! VERY irritating!!  And what if I want to create a place tag (of which I already have many) which does not have a recognizeable address, like, say, Grandmother's House?  VERY irritating.
And if I use the Keyword feature to create Place tags, they will be in an entirely separate list from the other Place tags.  VERY irritating!
Who designed this upgrade?  I will soon start looking for an alternative, though I have used Photoshop Organizer for years and have thousands of photos in it.  My upgrade to PSE 12 has caused me nothing but headaches.

  • Imported people tags in PSE 11 - how do I merge them with existing people tags?

I have just upgraded from PSE 9 to PSE 11 and have imported some pictures that I have tagged in another program. Importing tags for everything other than people works fine (already used tags are recognized and reused). But importing tags for people proved to be a problem. They did not merge automatically with my previous people tags in PSE. My imported people tags ar now placed under "Imported Keyword Tags" in the "Media" workspace. How do I merge or move them to the "People" work space where the people tags for PSE 11 is placed?
I also wonder why people and other tags are put in different places. Is it possible to view all keyword tags in one list/place?

Thanks. That helped a little bit, but not with the merging of the identical imported tags and People tags. They seems to be separate systems? Other tags you can merge by selecting both and right click < Merge Key word tags.
I can of course do it all manually now that I'm able to search for both tag types in Media, but this seems unnecessary and idiotic...

  • When I imported an AE3 catalog into AE11 I lost Event & Place tags associ. with photos

Please help!  I had been using Adobe Elements 3 for many years. Finally I bought Adobe Elements 11. I backed up my Adobe Elements 3 (in XP Mode) catalog. Then I chose 'Restore Catalog' in Adobe Elements 11 to restore the catalog. I had to reconnect all my photos (>6000), which took a while.
Unfortunately although my old 'keywords' were imported they aren't all associated with photos.
What worked: the old 'Favorites' were converted to Stars, and any tags in the 'Other' category were retained.
What didn't work: all tags in the 'Events' or 'Places' categories.
The only thing I can think of to fix this would be to change all my event and places tags to the 'other' category then backup the catalog and import it again. Hopefully I wouldn't have to reconnect all the photos again.
Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

I had some symtoms like yours, but I'd first filtered by People while I was looking for Places and Events tags.  I opened the Tag Info, clicked on Places and got "no media:" because I was actually combining the place with a person.  Places and Events tags worked if I first clicked "media" to show all my pictures, which effectively cleared other tag selections.  Try doing that and then click on one or more arrows next to the tags.  The displayed pictures should filter more with each tag you click.
I don't get the user model in PSE 11 though.  It puts a check by keyword tags in a narrow horizontal frame at the top of the screen, and that seems like the only place where you can uncheck the filters.  That space is cramped, and hard to scan if you have a long tag list.  It seems more obvious to me to just mark a check by the tag info items themselves in the vertical colums on the right, like PSE 7.  Plus it shows places and events tags under keywords, with blank spaces in the main Places and Events boxes.  Plus you can highlight a folder under "My Folders", collapse the list and forget you aren't seeing all media.  It's confusing at best.

  • Strange Ordering of Places Tags

I have followed the long discussion by people who are VERY frustrated by having all their Places tages converted into something unusaeable without warning. Unfortunately, before I had appreciated the problem, I had already added some hundreds of pictures and so renaming Places to My-Places and reconverting from an earlier catalogue as suggested by Neal and Michel is no longer an option.
However, if I stay with the new Places tags, why on earth (no pun intended) are they listed in a random non-Alphabetic order? Why is Peru at the top, followed by Sweden, with Argentina somewhere in the middle and Nepal after United States? And why, if I switch to manual ordering, does it not allow me to move anything?
As for the other contributers, I am very upset indeed with these changes. The only option I can see is to create a My-Places category in Keywords, but I would then have to create and apply hundreds of new tags before deleting all the old ones, as I am not permitted to move the existing tags to a different structure. This is madness. The organizer is supposed to make life easier for users, not generate hours of work. (I have wasted many hours trying to sort out this mess, as evidently have many other people.)
One is in a Catch-22. Update to PSE-12 to get additional Raw Editing options (or what ever), and have all ones' carefully set up tagging hierarchy destroyed. It seems to be impossible to persuade Adobe that it is against all good practice to modify users' database structures without at least warning them and giving them the option to retain what they already have. It is getting to the point where the Organizer is becoming more of a problem than it is worth.

    Agreed. BUMP

  • Places Tagging in Elements 12

I converted all of my 16,000 photos from Elements 8 to Elements 12.  In Elements 8, I made up my own "Places" set of tags -- about 500 of them.  Not all places are mappable.  If I don't have an exact location, I may have to put something like Virginia.  Many of the photos have been scanned in at high resolution because I only have the old photo and I may not know the exact location.  Some locations change - new restaurant or winery name.  Elements 8 gave me the ability to search and find places on a map but with 16,000 photos and 500+ places, that was not practical.  When I imported my "Place" tags into Elements 12, it accepted them - fabulous!  Thank you.  But then when I went to add a new "Places" tag to MY list, I was forced to use the mapping function.  Have any of your programmers heard of backward compatibility?  This is incredibly annoying!  Having the new type of tagging function is fine but PLEASE give another alternative to allow custom "Place" tags.  I am sorry I bought the new version because of this.  Also, I realized that the general "Keyword" tag structure allows me to build customized tags but did I mention that I have 16,000 photos already tagged with over 500 personalized "Place" tags  - your accepted my tags and preserved months of work - JUST GIVE ME A WAY TO ADD MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    if you allow
Not me. I, like most of the people on this forum, am just a regular user (nothing to do with Adobe) trying to help others out.
I don't know of any way of doing what you are asking. The catalog itself is an sqlite database so if you know any sqlite experts they may be able to compare the two structures (the format has change between each release because of new features) and see if they can feed back the v12 changes to your v8 catalog.

  • PSE user since the old Album `1.  Accumulated a 20K or more photo catalog.  Stopped upgrading at PSE 10.  How do I translate all the categories, sub categories and tags in PSE 10 to the new versions that look alot like the system in Lightroom??

How do I convert my catalog and the Categories, Sub Categories, and Tags in PSE 10 to the newer versions like PSE 12 or 13??
The new organizer looks a lot like Lightroom with the computers filing system, not the organizer I have been using for about 10 years.
Can I upgrade and somehow retain all the organization I presently have?

  • Elements 11 vs 13: how can I add a new place tag to my PSE13 database without using the wretched and totally inadequate map technology  that Elements 13 wants to impose.

    HI,
I have recently installed Elements 13 having used Elements 11.0 successfully to build a database of 30,000 plus images indexed by place, people, and photo date. Elements 11 allowed me to add new places which are meaningful to me but which are a complete mystery to the mapping technology of Elements 13. For example some years ago I lived in London in a road called Argyle Road. In elements 11 I could enter the place tag as Argyle Road. In Elements 13 I am required to locate Argyle Road on the map, but the map presupposes that the Argyle Road I am referring to is in Ealing in West London. It is not!
I now live in a place called Broadsands but the Elements 13 Map places this 0.5 miles away from what I would describe as Broadsands.
So the question: how can I add a new place tag to my database without using the wretched and totally inadequate map technology  that Elements 13 wants to impose.

Thank you for your quick response, BalusC. I really appreciate your answer.
Yes, you are right. If I manually code the same amount of those components in the JSF pages instead of generating them dynamically, the server will still run out of memory. That is to say, JSF pages might not accommodate a great deal of concurrent visiting. If I upgrade the server to just allow 1,000 teachers making their own test papers at the same time, but when over 2,000 students take the same questionnaire simultaneously, the server will need another upgrading. So I have to do what you have told me, using JS+DOM instead of upgrading the server endlessly.
    Best Regards, Ailsa

  • Place tags and how can I turn off mapping?

I upgraded to Photoshop Elements 12. Really like most of the changes, but really don't like how I seem to have lost control over place tags. I don't want anything to do with mapping. How do I turn it off? I want to manage place tags the way I have for years now, i.e. I want to create my own categories and subcategories and arrange them in an order that makes sense to me--not to someone elses idea of how things should be organized. I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking how to turn off the mapping feature. Any ideas?

If you've only recently changed and not added much to PSE12 your best bet is to rename 'Places' in your old version to 'My Places' then convert the catalog again. Then they will come across just like in the old version and you can completely ignore the new PSE12 methodology.

  • How do I subdivide "Places" tags?

On Premiere Elements 12, I have some "Places" tags that I were generated on earlier versions of Photoshop Elements.  E.g. a tag for "House".  I used to be able to subdivide this tag into "Garage" or "Kitchen", etc.  Now, I can only rename, delete, or place it on the map.  I can not add a sub tag to it.  Is this correcct?
How do I subdivide Place tags?

    Reg1987
    In Elements Organizer 12
    House Category
and, after clicking on 3 New Category in above screenshot, is seen after typing in House
After clicking OK to Create Category dialog, House is now one of the Keywords categories along with Nature, Color, Photography, and Other.
For House sub-category of Kitchen...right click House in the list of categories
And, after clicking on 2 Create new sub-category in the third screenshot, is seen the following after typing in Kitchen
After clicking OK to Create Sub-Category dialog, Kitchen is now one of the House sub-categories
If sub-category under Kitchen is required, right click Kitchen and select create new sub-category. And, so on.....
If a new category is wanted to join House and the rest, go to and click the triangle at the top right of the line that displays the header name Keywords.
Please review and then let us know if you are OK with the details. Double check for any typing errors. Should be OK. Have proofread several times already.
    Thanks.

  • Keyword tags in PSE 2.0?

Can I add keyword tags in PSE 2.0?

Way back in version 2.0, there were separate programs called Photoshop Album, and Photoshop Elements. Purchasing one did not give you the other.
So, if the question is really about Photoshop Elements 2, I think the answer is probably NO.
If the question is really about Photoshop Album 2, the answer is definitely YES ... but ... it might be a good idea to upgrade to a more recent program, because at some point, PSA2 will not run on your new computer with a new operating system, and people have reported difficulty translating PSA2 tags to more current versions of Photoshop Elements software.

  • Is there a way for GPS coordinates to override a 'places' tag when viewing photos on the map?

I like to have 'places' tags for all of my photos in Elements Organizer so I can filter photos without the map view.  The problem is that some of my photos already have GPS information from my camera.  When I tag a photo that has EXIF geo data with a 'places' tag, it moves the photo on the map to the less specific lat/long of the tag and no longer uses the lat/long of the photo itself.  I would like to use the data EXIF data from the photo, if it exists, rather than the lat/long from the places tag.
Alternately, it would be cool if Elements would auto-create places tags based on the lat/long from a photos EXIF data.  That would also solve my conflict between places tags and EXIF data from the photo.
Any ideas?  Am I out of luck?

Why don't you just put a passcode lock on the phone so no-one else can use it when you're not around?
You can look at the history in Safari, but that won't prevent someone from clearing the history and cookies after they use it.

  • How do i convert old elements places tags to elements 12 places tags?

I have spent over 10 years organizing almost 9000 photos and videos using Adobe Photoshop Album and Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer.
I recently upgraded to Elements 12, and I am trying to tag my vacation photos. I tried to add a new Places tag. That resulted in me becoming extremely aggravated.
I had created dozens of places tags in several categories of places. I used a logical approach for organizing places, instead of using a strict geographical hierarchy.
Now Elements 12 will only let me add new Places tags by searching a Google map, and the new tags are forced against my will into a strict geographical hierarchy. So, while that is not what I'm used to, it at least makes sense.
Where I get really aggravated is that Elements 12 does not provide any way to upgrade all my existing tags to the new hierarchy. I can go to each existing Places tag and associate it with a map location, but it does not move (or allow me to copy/move) it to the new strict geographical hierarchy. So, as I move forward with Elements Organizer, I'm stuck with part of my collection tagged with my pre-12 scheme and the other part tagged with your 12-onward scheme. It will get to be very confusing when I go to tag photos and I have dig back and forth between the two schemes to find the tag to use. Why was it so critically important to not let long-term, loyal customers keep doing it the way they have been doing it for so many years????

It not be so bad if Adobe's geo-hierarchy was consistent with itself. However when I created some British place tags, some counties (e.g. Cornwall) were placed within the England tag, whereas other counties (Derbyshire, North Yorkshire) were placed one level up, within the United Kingdom tag.  They should all be within England (within United Kingdom), or they should all be within United Kingdom, which would make the England tag redundant. Some other towns and villages that I added, did not get their county-level tag at all, and are consequently "children" of the England tag. It really is nonsensical.
