Placed .ai files becomes transparent on PDF??

Hi fellow InDesign users,
I have a problem with my CS3 InDesign (fully upgraded/updated) and CS3 Illustrator (also fully upgraded/updated)
I have an Illustrator file which I would like to place in my layout. The artwork is completely white (C=0, M=0, Y=0, K=0) and is shown correctly when I preview my layout in InDesign, however when I export it to PDF and try to print the file, it disappears from the layout leaving everything else to print normally.
I can print just fine directly from Illustrator, I can also export my art as a PDF from Illustrator and print it correct.
I can also have other white (C=0, M=0, Y=0, K=0) elements and text on the same layout and they will print fine as well.
The only thing not working is the thing I need :( a way to print my placed (C=0, M=0, Y=0, K=0) Illustrator file.
I have tried to look at my PDF export options and also my import options when placing the file and I can't figure out why it won't print.
Please help!

Can you see the file when you preview in InDesign with preview overprint?
If you have set this file, which isn't white but blank (0000), to
overprint then it will be leaving the background instead of knocking it out.

  • Placed EPS file becoming pixelated?

Hi, I have imported an EPS file into Indesign.  When I come to export this InDesign file as a PDF the EPS is pixelated on the PDF?  It looks fine in InDesign when I view it in overprint preview, but when it is PDF'd it becomes pixelated?? Also, the document will only be shown as a PDF, but it seems to have a slightly cloudy appearence to it.  ( like a white frosted effect over it) The full colour is restored on the PDF when I click on Advanced / Print Production / Output Preview. Is there a way of always having it to these settings? Thanks in advance, Andy

can you start by telling us the operating system (and version) you are using, along with the version of indesign you are using?
how is the pdf being made? is it being exported to pdf and if so, what options are being selected? what happens when the options are changed?
is the EPS a photoshop file or an illustrator file? is it RGB, CMYK or LAB? what happens when you safe the EPS as something else and place the file?
put simply, from your description of the situation i can't nail it down to one thing in particular, so try playing with the above options and see if it makes any difference, and if so, what you did that solved the problem (if it gets solved of course).

  • A4 file becomes Letter sized PDF

when i convert an A4 word file to PDF, the PDF is letter sized. how can I change settings so that it is saved in A4 size as a PDF

I'm just saving the file as a PDF within the programme I'm using (Word 2010, PP 2010) not doing anything complicated! I've also uploaded the file to Adobe CreatePDF online with the same outcome.

  • PDF Rendering in Google Chrome [From indesign file with Placed Illustrator files]

I have recently run into problems with files that have been output from Indesign and contain placed Ilustrator files. While the PDF, if downloaded is totally fine [and it views fine in other browsers] when viewed in Chrome it seems to erraticly drop some but not all layers. I realize this is an Chrome issue but I'm curious if anyone else has run into this and, if so, if there is an obvious workaround...
    Thanks!
    David

Well that would be ideal, I agree, yes, but I'm talking about collection of documents that I produce that people view all over the world on our site -- I can't control how they view them and while I assume Chrome is still a minority browser it would be great if I could workaround this issue [without using rasterized versions of the images in the original Indesign file.]

  • Disappering cursor when placing multiple file in Indesign.

When placing multiple file (jpeg, tiff's, pdf files, etc.) in a indesign document, my cursor disappears. If you can get to the desktop and click on it, it will come back.
first started in Indesign CC 2014, Any fix for this?
    Thanks, Dennis

    Hi,
This is an expected behavior, when you place an image in InDesign then it display the preview of the image however you this has no impact on the output unless the image placed is of low-resolution itself.
In order to have good resolution of images, you may switch to View > Display Performance > High Quality.

  • When I view PDF files, they become transparent?? If I turn off plug-ins then pdf is ok?? What do I do?

Not sure what else to say. When I try to view a PDF file, it becomes transparent & whiteish and I see my desktop through it. If I choose to turn off all plug-ins then it's ok. Soooo, I'm assuming it's something with the plug-ins. Perhaps a new update or something as I haven't intentionally changed anything at all.

This only happens to me when I don't have the window maximized. It also happens with other embedded media, such as parts of Pandora's interface.

  • How can I export a smallformat flatten PDF-file with transparant parts in?

My post on a PDF - more clear with images (english):
    http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-eng.pdf
    Deze post in nederlandstalige versie:
    http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-nl.pdf
    Scope?
I'dd like to export an Indesign-file (.indd) to a PDF-file that has to be:
    - the smallest possible file size
    - which displays images and text sharp on the screen
    - which also certainly remain transparent parts of .psd-files after exporting
    - that is flattened for easy print
    The problem?
    ▪ How and with which of settings can I export such a file from InDesign 5.0?
    ▪ If necessary in combination with some settings (after exporting) in our Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
    Further explanation
The export file contains lots of text, graphics, photographs and drawings. Many of these items are .psd-files that contain transparent areas. The intention is that this transparent parts actually remain transparent even after exporting/flattening /decreasing the PDF.
    ▪ With InDesign 5.0?
→ In the window Export Adobe PDF: (images see: http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-eng.pdf )
Should I start from a default PDF preset   (if yes > which one??)
    Possibilities are: High Quality Print / PDFX-1a: 2001 / PDFX-3:2002 / PDFX-4:2007 / Press Quality / Smallest File Size
Or is it better to create a PDF preset on my own?     (if yes > which settings??)
    Standard > PDF/X-format?
    Compatibility > PDF-version?
Compression > If artwork should be compressed and downsampled, and if so,
which method and settings to I have to use ?
Ouput > How can I control colors and PDF/X output intent profiles in the PDF-file?
Advanced > How can I control fonts, OPI specifications, transparency flattening, and JDF instructions are
                      in the PDF file?
    ▪ With Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
→ How can I reduce the file size extra, so more reducing after exporting into PDF ?
→ How can I flatten the exported file (if not done during the export) ?
!! Important, when I export/reduce/flatten the file, I ‘dd like that the parts of images who were transparent before, stays also transparent after !!
    WHAT CAN I DO ??

    Hello,
I'm sorry you're having trouble. Unfortunately, this forum is for the ExportPDF service of Acrobat.com. The ExportPDF service functions as a PDF to *.docx file convertion and we can't help with problems specific to the desktop version of Acrobat or InDesign.  I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

  • Applied 55% transparency to group of objects, but a placed .eps file is darker than things created natively in InDesign

    hey guys,
I'm working on a math book and for some reason, my placed .eps files (which are used for equations) are appearing darker than the other items when set to 55% opacity. I've ensured that everything is set to 100% opacity before grouping, then grouped and set to 55%. My only thought is maybe the eps is RGB when the other things are CMYK...and if this is the case, I'm not sure how to test / fix it. Other than that idea, I have no clue as to where to begin in addressing this issue.
The cheese is real with this example.
You can see here that I'm applying the 55% opacity to the entire group. I've also ungrouped all of the objects, made sure they're at 100% opacity, then grouped and set to 55%.
You can see here that the text is 100% black.
    Thanks!

Sorry, I Googled around a bit, but not quite sure what you mean by distilling the PDF. I've exported the PDF as a "High Quality PDF", and the issue still persists there. Should I alter the PDF export options some?

  • Placed .png files in look blurry in InDesign CS6 & output PDF

I'm brand new to InDesign...just learned it yesterday. I'm using CS6. However, I think I'm following best practices as I've watched many instructional videos and have a folder of images I'm using in the document which I place in the document using "File" -> "Place." I've both put them into frames that already exist (and used "Object" -> "Fitting" and often "Fit frame proportionally" but also other commands) as well as without a frame where I drag a window the size I'd like the file to be after I've loaded up my cursor using "File" -> "Place."
I'm at a loss as my files are 72 DPI and 144 DPI (I'm on a Mac and have checked them out both in Photoshop and using "Tools" -> "Inspector" in Preview) and I have NO idea why they look so terrible in both InDesign and my output pdf! I'm attaching both the files I'm placing and screenshots of what they look like in the output .PDF.
Thanks SO MUCH for any help anyone can give me--I'm working on an urgent project and must figure this out!

This info was quite helpful--thanks everyone!
First of all, I'm not entirely sure I chose the right tool for this job, and advice on this would be welcome. I wanted a document of portfolio pages formatted sort of like a book, so I thought it would be better to use InDesign rather than something like Photoshop or Illustrator (I've learned these tools in the last year but haven't really used them to create documents). My primary goal, however, was to present this information both from my computer and on my website, and a secondary goal was for it to be able to print nicely. So I thought InDesign was the right choice. (I read this article from 2010: Adobe Photoshop vs. Illustrator vs. Indesign | Dream Infinity Studios / Chris Takakura | Art Direction + Design to get some guidance...hopefully most of it is still relevant.) Because of that I wasn't sure whether to use "Intent" -> "Print" or "Intent" -> "Web", so I went with web with a 1024 x 768 page size, hoping that will look OK for desktop (not professional) printing. What do people do when they want something to function in both domains? Not sure if that could have affected anything about the way these images were placed...
In terms of finding a solution:
    1. I was using High Quality Display--it was more an issue with my output document. (Though strangely sometimes when I toggle between high-quality & typical displays, sometimes things that looked good when I was working on them in high quality, after toggling to typical and back, look horrid.)
    2. It seemed at first that it might be an issue of the way I placed the files, e.g. I was positioning my cursor OUTSIDE any sort of field and dragging a square to the size I wanted my image to be. I'm wondering if it somehow reduced the image size because if I create the square using the "Rectangle Frame Tool" it seemed to work much better. I've also tried just dropping the file without the frame tool and resizing it that way, but my images are actually VERY long & wide, so that's difficult. I was also wondering the "fitting" option I chose may have been affecting the display...I've been trying "Fitting" -> "Fit Content Proportionally" lately.
    3. I created some .pdfs of some of the pings from Omnigraffle, and that seemed to help, but that actually makes them look worse because there are screenshots within the OmniGraffle mock-up files which are washed out and pixelated and the text that was added on top stands out too much (see attached screenshot...the one on top is a PDF and the header and footer looks funny and the bottom is a PNG where at least everything looks consistent).
So though some files look better now (especially, ironically enough, the 72 DPI screenshot of Use Cases!), I can't figure out what process I should follow to get consistently good results. Because a) the mockup files look good when I first paste them, and b) they are longer and wider than the content area I'm using and I'm shrinking them significantly, I cannot figure out why I can't keep that level of detail after they've been shrunk to fit. I keep wondering if I'm placing image properly, shrinking them properly, or those Fitting settings properly...

  • Tracking placed files (jpeg,tiff,word,PDF,excel)

It was recommended to ask this here vs bridge - not much luck in bridge. The situation: i have multiple sources sending a variety of files (jpeg, tiff, word,PDF,and excel). As the book is designed many of them will be placed. As long as the sources update with the same name im good. However, they will inevitably send me batches of files containing new files - how can I track what has been placed and what hasn't. I will have multiple folders to organize the chaos. One thing bridge helped with: keyword. I can quite easily assign a placed keyword in bridge, filter using that word and im done. Except for word and excel - metadata doesn't take. Someone explained this to me.
The sources are out of country, so i have to track this. Bridge takes care of 90%. Perhaps someone has dealt with this. Again, if someone adds a new photo without calling it out, keyword work. Its the Microsoft documents that get tricky. In advance, i appreciate our time.

  • Pdf files become pixelated when filter effects are applied...

I have some pdf files in my Motion 4 project. When I uncheck the "fixed resolution" box, they pdf files look great. But when I proceed to add any filter effect like any of the Glow filters, the pdf file becomes all pixelated and looks horrible. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance,

Filters fix the resolution, rasterizing the vector graphics. Try make it very large, the apply the filter to the containing layer and shrink the layer to be the desired size...

  • CS5 - Placed Indesign files vs placed PDF files

Does anyone have any information as to wether is better to create indesign layouts with 100+ placed Indesign files or PDF files? Does one produce more efficient / bulletproof PDF(for print) in the end? We produce many layouts with 100+ placed images and are thinking of switching to placing indesign files within a larger indesign layout.

I've noticed that placing 100's of InDesign files/ pages into other InDesign document causes my system to slow down.
In the case of placing 100's of files inside another, I find the PDFs seem to work better.
This is something I have to do when working on a book file. I don't have imposition software. So I have to use the Print Booklet from time to time.
I can place the 100 indesign files into another document. But that takes time. But I can PDF the entire book in a single go. From there I can import the 1000's of pages into InDesign via a script http://indesignsecrets.com/placing-all-the-pages-of-a-pdf-inside-indesign.php
I can then proof the book on screen as it would look when printed. Something not really possible to do with a normal Book in InDesign. Checking double page spreads that break across chapters is a particular thing I have to look for and make sure are working.
From here I can make Print Booklet for in-house "proofing" and use the term "proofing" loosely, as it's just to check that the DPS across spreads are ok before sending off to the printers to get the real proofs.

  • How to Apply Color to Placed .PNG file in AI_CS2 & keep Transparency?

So unfortunately I'm stuck with CS2, but it sure beats not having it at all.
I'm importing a graphic icon that was saved from Photoshop as a .PNG file with transparency into AI_CS2. (I can open the .PNG and resave it with any options or as a different format as suggested.)
Once I import this image, I'd like to apply particular swatches to it. However, I find I can only apply a swatch after I've run LiveTrace. My problem is that after I've done so, I lose the transparency that is essential to this icon.
Can anyone assist me? I'd be much indebted to you!
FYI, ultimately I plan on saving this as a graphic .EPS to import into InDesign CS2.
Thank you! Please let me know if there are any clarifications I can make.
    Peace,

    CS2, MacOSX 10.4

For ease of discussion, I'm just going to reveal the graphic here. I really think I ought to be able to color something so simple. I've gone back into Pshop & converted this to grayscale (the original was cut from something with color in it).
After placing it in AI, I still can't apply a color, and once I run LiveTrace, if I apply a color, it colors the entire bounding box, not just the inside of the path. Same is true even if I choose MagicWand and select the inside area first. What else do I need to do? Is there a path option I need to choose after running LiveTrace? Thanks!
(FYI, I'm inserting a .gif here b/c the .png file appeared with black in the background, and grey fill in the panther. This should be a black panther with a transparent background, if it doesn't work here, hopefully you get the point.)

  • Creating an interactive PDF using a placed FLV file...

Is it possible to use text or graphics on top of a placed FLV when creating an interactive PDF from InDesign?
(I have placed a FLV file into InDesign. Then I created an interactive PDF. The video plays within the PDF just fine.
However, I would like to have a graphic or text appear over the FLV while the FLV is playing in the PDF. So far,
the graphics and text disappear after making the interacative PDF).
    matt

Ok guys Thanks. Appreciate the backup.
As a temporary fix, I enlarged my document size to allow the FLV to come in
with room underneath it. Then I placed my text under it (avoiding the FLV file).
This allowed me to have copy underneath the video to at least simulate what
is being said on screen while the video is moving.
    Thanks,
    matt

  • Vector file turning transparent when placing into ps

    Hi,
am hoping someone can help me. I have a vector image that I am trying to place into a PS document. For some reason as soon as I click to accept the placement, the vector image becomes transparent.
It is only happening (thankfully) with this particular file so I am assuming it must be some setting in Illustrator that I am not aware of. I purchased the file from a stock image site. (sadly I am not clever enough to create my own lol).
    Any ideas?

    hi Manish
thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, I can't share the file. it would be against the TOS of the stock photo site from where I purchased it.
The only way I can prevent other layers from showing through this particular file is by duplicating it. So I'm guessing that the opacity is somehow being reduced. But no idea why, and when I click on the layer it says it is at full opacity, and normal blending. The ppacity remains at full when in Illustrator, so if I put another image behind this particular file then there is no problem. It is only when moving this file into PS that it becomes see through.
Adding a couple of preview screenshots so you can see what I mean.
