Placed images in exported PSDs are pixelated

I'm making large prints (40x60) from Illustrator files, and the print plugin requires Photoshop. I am converting the AI file's Document Color Mode to RGB, then exporting to PSD as high-resolution 300ppi, using artboards.
When I export the AI files to PSD and view them in PS, the photographic elements appear pixelated at 100% whereas the text & graphics are smooth and high-res. I've checked the linked photographic files, and they are not pixelated. So what I've had to do is export editable PSDs from AI using the "Write Layers" option, open the files in PS, and then re-place the photographic elements so that they are no longer pixelated.
FYI, Anti-Aliasing is set to Art Optimized (Supersampling). The AI and PS files are both sized to 40x60, and the PSD is opening as 300ppi.
Any idea why this is happening?

If you are linked to the exact same photographic elements that you are replacing manually,  then this should not be happening. Check your links palette that you do not have any embed icons such as the top link (looks like an old MacPaint icon).
If you just want flattened images, try saving your .ai files as .eps, then opening them in Photoshop and saving as .psd.
There is a pixel limit when exporting .ai files to .psd, and with 40" x 60" @ 300 dpi that you should have gotten an error on, though they may have increased that limit in CS6.

  • Printed images are pixelating

Images already printed clearly, are pixelating when I copy and then past as layers onto a new canvas.
This is a proceedure I have used many times in the past, and am quite surprised, and lost, about the reasons for it.
    Any help on this question?

    Hi, Trevor,
The light came on, and the problem corrected...knew it was something simple, and upon reading your response, realized that another adjustment I was using (setting the canvas size to the media size) was creating the problems with the pixels.
    Thanks for your quick response.

  • Rasterize settings for placed images?

How do I place images in AI to make sure that they come in at a high quality? Is there some setting that controls the rasterize settings?
    Thanks.

Placed images are placed at whatever resolution the original file is at. You can't directly control the ppi of any placed image.
If you are using raster effects (drop shdows, glows, etc) or are specifically rasterizing content within AI, you'll want to set the Document Raster Effects Settings (in the Effects menu) to "high" or 300ppi.

  • CS6 InDesign - Default display is high-quality. Four placed images are Illustrator files. Three images look the way they should - high-quality. One image looks pixelated. Why?

InDesign CS6 - Default display is high-quality. All four placed images are Illustrator files. Three images look the way they should - high-quality. One image looks pixelated. Why?

Not sure if this will help, but what is your inDesign file's "Transparency Blend Space" set to? It's under the edit menu.
Also, when you are placing your images, are you selecting "Show Import Options" and making any selections there?

  • Exported images are pixelated

I am having trouble with ALL of my exported images.  The only one I can say that have come out better have been a high quality print PDF.  JPG, GIF, EPS - all have turned out to be pixelated.  I know what I am doing and this has never happened to me before.  I asked in two other forums and the people acted like I was stupid!  I have been working with these programs for years!  I just may not be wording my problem correctly, so bare with me.
I created a logo in illustrator and it looks great on the screen, but when I export it as say a JPG and bring it back in to illustator it looks horribly pixelated.  I am exporting at the highest level possible.  Is there another setting that would cause it to be pixelated?
I have tried so many different things now I am not sure what else to do.  Could this be cause by a lacking update?  A bad set of fonts with a virus, maybe? I don't know anymore - any help will be GREATLY appreciated!
This all just started I was working on it just fine a couple of days ago with no problems and now everything has been different.

vividdesigngirl, I apologize if my message has offended you in any way. That was not my intention and I really wanted to help you, I was pretty much sure and still believe that what I said is the only ways to get the results you reported not because I'm judging you or anything like that but because I don't know how else one can get the results you reported. Also if it is not obvious English is not my native language and I may have failed in using it properly. Again apologies for anything that sounded offending.
If you are still interested in my contribution to solving your problem, I would say that I don't understand well what you have done to the exported image as described in the first paragraph of you last reply. Using File > Export to JPG doesn't recognize artboards - they are ignored. The image is clipped by the bounding box of the objects. So if the bounding box of your book is 8x5 inches, regardless of the size of the artboard, and if you export with High selected for Depth, you will get 2400x1500 pixels for the book and not 576 by 360 pixels as you originally reported. If what you are saying is that your book image is in fact 2400x1500 pixels without any margins around and it still looks pixelated, this is entirely different problem than the one you initially reported by saying it is 576 by 360, and to solve it you have to provide additional information in that regard.
    edit: Oh, wait
    vividdesigngirl wrote:
...I accidently thought the question was how big my artboard was in pixels not my exported image. ...
you mean you artboard is 576 by 360 as measured on the rulers in Illustrator? And thus your book which fits in it? OK, I get it. The pixels unints on the ruler and in the transform controls are used only for the default size if you use Save for Web and Devices but as I said, you can change them in the Image tab.
If the exported image is in fact 2400x1500 pixels you should not see any pixelation. How are you bringing this image back to Illustrator. What happens if you right click on the file and choose open with Illustrator? Is it still pixelated?
    edit 2:
if this happens with every image, can you please, create a simple document with a few simple round or skewed objects that show the pixelation, export as you usually do and share the illustrator and the exported jpg files by providing a link This is the best way to find the problem.

i thought as long as your frame rate and your image size and pixel aspect ratio matches all you wouldnt have this problem. how do i fix this issue? The psd looks okay in "fit" zoom but when i go 100% its shot. i tried burning it and it looks the same as 100% since that is the native resolution. please help thanks..

You my friend are a genius! worked like a charm!
    Thanks
One more question not related the pixelation is that in System Preferences/Desktop & Screen Saver
Two 'Aperture Projects' come up with identical content in them of my Aperture Library. Both with the little triangle expander to the left of them. I can't understand why there are two of the exact same thing.

  • How to find out the Pixel Dimensions and Document Size of placed images?

Is it possible to find out the placed image details like Pixel Dimensions(Width,Height) Document Size(Width,Height) in illustrator through scripting. Kindly advice me with some examples.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbaa316.59b84fd8
I hope the snippet therein will get you started.
But after all, when you place an image via pi=layer.placedItems.add() it should pop in with its default dimensions, so that you have pi.height and pi.width ready.
Is this what you are aiming at?

  • PIXELATED IMAGES AFTER EXPORT TO IDVD

Help! I'm confused and frustrated. I have imported 65 images from iPhoto to iMovie and added titles, music and a few transitions. The movie plays fine in iMovie full screen on my 20 inch iMac. After exporting to Idvd project a number of the images (most) are pixelated and even more confusing (at least to me), when I return to the original iMovie (which was great before the export) now those images are pixelated also. WHAT IS GOING ON? , how can I avoid this? Hope I am in the right forum.
    imac g5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Bengt: Right now I'm jubilant. Tried your methodology, and results were beautiful. Good burn and no JAGGIES. Then made a disc image and tried a burn from that. Great. If this continues I owe you a "GREAT BIG THANK YOU!!" I have been struggling with this problem far to long. Next I want to try adding some more complex transitions and perhaps some Ken Burns and hoping to see the same SMOOTHE lines. Too bad more people don't know about this for I see others posting about pixelation.
    For now, I remain grateful.

  • Placing Images In Illustrator Are Blurry.

Hello I have this problem in CS5 that any type of image or line art are always blurry. All my work is for print and perhaps just the preview is blurry but I am afraid that printing will be bad.
Most graphics I bring in are from Photoshop CS5. I make sure they are 300DPI to start and recently learned they should not be in RGB mode but CMYK.
The images I should also mention when placed are very small and I have to scale them to be the correct size. I do not know why they do not place as their original size. So basically it is small size and blurriness.
Any help regarding this matter is appreciative. I am new at Illustrator and want to learn more from it since it seems like a great tool to use for printing.
    Thanks,
    Victor

I believe the solution to your problem starts in photoshop. Most printers require resolution to be 2X the lpi (lines per inch) and the most common line screen is 150 lpi (133 or 175 are the next most common), so hence 300 dpi (dots per inch) standard resolution requirement. Open your image in photoshop >> Image >> image size >> uncheck resample image >> change your resolution to 300 dpi if it is not and save. I bolded that cause thath setting is very important, and you will need to become intimately familiar with hwo everthing in image size works. This unchecking will not add or remove pixels, but will adjust the size of your image if you change to 300 dpi.
Now when you place the imahe in ilustrator, you will know that your image is exactly 300 dpi. If you scale your image smaller, no problem your effective resolution will be >300dpi adn that never hurts. If you scale your image larger in Illustrator, then you know that your resolution will be less than 300 dpi. You can now better assess the quality of your image reproduction.

  • When I open thumbnail images in another tab they are pixelated, what's wrong?

When I go on any website with images they are pixelated. Placing the cursor over each image gives the me the option of pressing 'alt' and 'r' to refresh the image or 'alt' and 'a' to refersh the whole page. When I open a thumbnailed picture in a new tab, whether or not I've refreshed the page or the image beforehand, the image is pixelated and I can't refesh it. What's going on?

    Every time Firefox opened

Sounds like you are using a dial-up connection along with a "web accelerator". If that is the case it is a feature of that web accelerator from your ISP. They speed up page loading by initially supplying lower quality images and giving you the option of loading the original, full resolution image from their cache with those keyboard commands. Other ISP's with a web accelerator feature use Contextual menu items, which are added to Firefox via an extension installed into Firefox.
As far as not having the option to load the full quality image when you open it in a new Tab, I have no idea why that option doesn't appear. You should contact support at your ISP to ask about that issue.

  • Exporting sequence from Final Cut Pro 7, some clips are pixellated and bad quality, does this have anything to do with the fact that I changed those clips speed?

    Hello,
Bit of a beginner using Final Cut Pro 7
Am currently trying to export a sequence using quicktime conversion.  Sequence has various filters and effects over it and when I export it some of the clips are pixellated and appear to have not exported correctly.  From what I can gather the affected clips have either been slowed down or made faster.  I am wondering whether this is the reason they have not exported correctly
    Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers

fwiw - do not use quicktime conversion. Use Export Quicktime with Current Settings enabled then do any format conversions in Compressor.

  • Full browser flash site - bg images are pixelating

I have my swf publishing at 100% width and height and set it to scale with the browser. The background image was a psd designed at a height of 680 px. When I check on larger monitors the background images pixelates. Is the only way to fix this is to redesign the psd at a higher resolution? What would I need to do to make sure the artwork doesn't pixelate no matter what size monitor is being viewed on. Thank you?

Anytime you enlarge an image from its true size you risk visible pixelation.  The images would need to be sufficiently large to handle any resolution.

I have the dinosaur PSE2 but the method should be the same in 11.
Image > Resize > Image Size  (the path to Image Size might be different in 11). This brings up the window:
