Placed images in Illy CS5

When I place images in Illustrator CS5,
I usually do it with RGB jpegs or RGB Psd (photoshop images)
while my document in illustrator is in CMYK mode
Then When my file is ready to be send for print
I save AS PDF (option Press Quality is Checked)
My question is the following:
Do I need to convert the placed photoshop images
into CMYK and/or any other particular format (tiff or else)
AND THEN SAVE IT as PDF
Or when saved as PDF the program automatically does for me???
I used to be a FREEHAND user and with Freehand we had to convert the images in CMYK (tif)
and then REPLACE THEM with the new ones before sending the file to a print shop
So far In illustrator I haven,t been converting my images into CMYK
and had no problems with my printed jobs (leaving all placed files as are - RGB)
IS THIS THE RIGHT WAY ...ANY OTHER CLUES AS TO WHAT TO DO

I think that color management issues are a thing I need to dig into a little more.
As I have mentioned so Far I Have not had ANY problems with the printed outcome
even if I left the placed images in RGB formats
The reason that suits me at least is that I save time this way (not having to convert the placed files in CMYK)
AND THEN REPLACE THEM.
Also I keep my Hard drive not so full since I dont keep CMYK files that take up more memory and space.
BUT THE QUESTION CONTINUES....
Is it better to EMBED the images upon placement. Does Illy treat them any different???

Placing an image in Indesign CS5- Previews are slow

I have a customer with identical intel MacPros, 10.5.8 OSX, 8GB RAM and running CS5.
Whenever they go to PLACE an image in either InDesign or Illustrator the preview window that comes up takes up to 65 seconds for a preview to appear in the window. These are images(TIFFs or EPS) that are over 200MB.
What I've done so far:
Timed image preview when placing an image from server or off of desktop- No speed difference in showing the preview.
Took my MacBook Pro and tried to place the images- Immediate preview, no matter the size of the image. Desktop and over the network.
Started their MacPros up in target disk mode- Launched InDesign from their computer- No problem.
Started my MacBook Pro in target disk mode- Launched InDesign from my computer- Same speed issues with preview appearing when placing an image.
Replaced their current video cards with accelerated high end graphic cards. - No performance increase. When previewing a placed image, still very slow.
None of my other customers have this issue. Any clues????

There have been sporadic reports that changing the preference for live screen drawing to delayed from immediate has helped other issues such as this.
Try that first and let us know if it corrects the problem.

Placing images at an exact scale in Indesign CS5?

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can clue me in here... I've just updated from Indesign CS3 to CS5. I was hoping in the upgrade Indesign would give you an option for placing images in picture frames at an exact scale (like you can in Quark), for instance if you place an empty picture box on the master pages and enter 55% scale you would drop in images on each page of the layout at 55% scale.
In Indesign CS3 the closest I could get to that was to place an "FPO" image in the picture boxes on the master pages at 55% scale, then when I'd replace each FPO on the layout pages with my images they would drop in at 55% scale. It worked pretty well.
With CS5 I'm finding that when I replace an FPO image it will still drop in at the same scale the FPO is at, but ONLY if you load and place one image at a time... if you load, say, twenty images and drop them into the layout replacing the FPO images, they come out as prorortionally fitted to the picture frame... NOT as 55%.
this is a real issue for me as I routinely work on layouts where I need to place 400 and up images at an exact scale...
Anyone know a work around here, or any tips?

As far as I know, you can't set scaling for a empty frame. You can use a placholder image and scale that, and if you turn off relink preserves dimensions relinking to a new image would preserve the scaling, but only if you do it one at a time through the links panel. Using the Place command and replacing theimages will not preserve the scaling, so through the interface there isn't much help.
On the other hand, I think this could be scripted. If you need all the images to be the same scale it should just be a matter of looping through the document images and setting the scale. If none of the scripters are taking notice here, ask over in the scriping forum.

Placed Image problem solved

Both my colleague and I had problems with Adobe Illustrator CS5:
Problem:
1) AI refuses to "Place" external images.
2) Any existing AI documents with extant placed images now refuses to show them. The bounding boxes are there, but no images.
Solution:
Delete or remove the "FontExplorer X for Illustrator CS5.aip" plugin from the Adobe Illustrator > Plug-ins folder and all will be fine again.

How do I save an image and text as one image in InDesign CS5.0? NOT 5.5.
I need to save the image as a 72-dpi, jpg file for ePub purposes. I designed a book and am handing it off to someone for ePub.
This is what I've tried:
1) Copied from InDesign, pasted into a PhotoShop doc as a Smart Object. Saved it as 72 dpi jpg, then imported back into ID.
2) Took a screenshot of ID page, placed it in PS, saved as 72 dpi, imported into ID
3) Saved page as a PDF from InDesign, then saved PDF as 72 dpi jpg, then imported into ID.
4) Save page as a PDF from InDesign, placed into Photoshop and saved
as 72 dpi, then imported into ID.
5) Saved as an EPS from InDesign, placed in PS, then imported back to ID.
In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.

Naturally what you did will result in rasterized text. Did you preview with high quality settings?
Are you sure the people who will handle that downstream need pixel images and do you have the exact pixel dimensions needed?
Why did you place the image back in Indesign, by the way?

SCRIPT TO IMPORT MULTIPLE PLACED IMAGES..AND OUTPUT MULTIPLE IMAGES TO SINGLE PDF.

Anyone got a script to import multiple placed images into CS4? or is this possible in CS5?
and can we output multiple layers into a single PDF in illustrator? Or multiple layers into single JPEGS from illustrator with one command instead of individually saving out each page... would be a huge time saver for me.
Currently I output each completed layer individually and then right click those outputted jpegs in their output folder and choose "combine supported files into acrobat..." to make a single acrobat file..
I`d also like to be able to CTRL click multiple layers and go save as... only those layers get saved out...
And so adding something in the Save for PDF output dialogue box to save layers to multiple pages would be a helpful time saver..

In CS 4 and CS 5 you can drag and drop fro m the finder or the Bridge, and I guess any other similar type viewer, multiple number of image files to a document. You can configure the bridge in such a way as to allow you to see the Bridge and your document at the same time for this very purpose.
If you just drag and drop the files are linked if you drag while holding the shift key then the files will be embedded.
ID and PS CS 5 have a minibridge which works the sam way but is an actually panel and will stay in the front.
I separate the images but they import one on top of another.

I'm using Indesign CS5, and looking in the AppleScript Dictionary, I see:
get property v : Gets the XMP property value associated with the specified path.
get property link metadata
namespace text : The namespace of the property.
path text : The specified path.
→ text : The associated property value.
But, I can't work out the syntax. Any help would be appreciated.
My end goal is to harvest the Instance IDs and then form them into a search query for a DAM.

Placed image scale anomaly

A funny thing happened on my way to the theatre ...
Some days ago I placed an image into an Illie file, linked, 100% scale.
This morning I needed to edit the linked file in Photoshop. This involved cropping a bit off the bottom of it, thereby changing its dimensions.
Just to check that everything was still o.k. at the Illie end (because I somehow suspected that it might not be), I opened the Illie file.
Lo and behold, everything was not o.k. The placed image had scaled itself up by some few % becoming too wide.
Rather than fiddle around with scaling, I placed the image again and it came in in the right size.
I notice that exactly the same thing happens when I have Illie open while I am editing the image. The placed image hops visibly when Illie reads the new size.
Can anyone tell me why this is and how does Illie recognise the size of placed images?
Does she calculate the area or what is it that happens?
Here's an example that I tried afterwards, not having kept the original measurements:
Original image file 63.218 x 47.414 mm (placed in Illie at 100% scale)
Cropped in PS to 63.218 x 44.027 mm
Changes in Illie to 64.846 x 45.161 mm (scale 102.576%)
I can't make sense of the figures. Is anyone out there better at maths than I am? (Sure there must be!)

When you update a link, then image is scaled to fit the original bounding box size because of the default in the links palette >> placement options >> transforms
Links palette >> placement options>> dimensions should help. What I do not like most of these options later have blank sapce around the image, and it is hard to use the transform palette or snapping to for example snap to the edge of a die or guide.
I replace the image after the canvas size changes in photoshop, cause placement options though it has been around forever is not really that useful. Maybe someone else out there agrees/disagrees or has a different way to deal with this updating of resized images in Illustrator

Placed Image Clarity Issues

I am using ID CS5 on Windows 7 pro. My question is why do some of my placed images come in sharp and clear and others are fuzzy and only come in sharp when I change my display performance to 'high quality'. The images were created using PS CS5 albeit a few years apart. I normally have the view set to 'typical display' so I do not get lag from graphic intensive publications I am working on. It is more a nuisance than a hinderance. I would still like to know why so I can give people who proof my projects on screen a reasonable explanation. As always, your help is always appreciated.

Peter, I save/create all my images at 300ppi. I did notice looking at the link info I see that actual ppi is 300 and the effectiv ppi changes as I scale the image. I did find something in the Preferences/Dispaly Performance that I can set raster images and vector graphcis to high resolution and seems to have solved the problem but still does not answer the question. I will try to let it go and get this project knocked out. Thanks for your help.

Is it possible to find out the placed image details like Pixel Dimensions(Width,Height) Document Size(Width,Height) in illustrator through scripting. Kindly advice me with some examples.

I hope the snippet therein will get you started.
But after all, when you place an image via pi=layer.placedItems.add() it should pop in with its default dimensions, so that you have pi.height and pi.width ready.

My web developer wants me to send him all of my images with an alt-tag assigned so that he can automate the ADA accessibility of the website. I know when I choose to "Save for Web & Devices," I have the option of how much metadata I want to include to the levels of : None, Copyright, Copyright and Contact Info, All Except Camera Info, All. I don't want the audience to be able to view all of the metadata because a lot of it is sensitive with administrative notes. Any ideas?

To anyone else who may encounter this issue in the future, here is a work around:
File > File Info:
Sacrifice a metadata field in the description tab. I chose document title and description. Click OK.
File > Save for Web and Devices:
Choose to save All Metadata.
Leave things here on your end, and have the web-developer map the code to display only the appropriate metadata field.

My images in Photoshop CS5 show up black.?
CS5 and was working great yesterday..but today both all my images PSD, JPG show up black in the workspace.
The image is only visible when I am moving the window around and it shows up in the layer window fine.
I can't see my edits, and I have no idea how to turn it off, or get that Black not to show...

Have you tried deleting your preferences file?
I think it's CTRL, ALT, SHift when starting PS and that will brinf up a prompt box.
