Placed rasters shift colors in PDF output

Hi all,
New to the forum but been working with CS tools for many years now. I'm sure this problem is fairly straightforward but it has me completely stumped.
This problem has surfaced recently; I've noticed it before but the situations were never as severe. It appears that when I place a raster on a page, the colors of the other objects on the page change. This happens only on the page where the graphic is placed, and only with raster images; vector graphics and text etc. are fine. File types also do not change the result; the issue happens with BMP, PSD, JPG, with or without transparency.
The document is strictly for viewing as a presentation on-screen, via PDF. I am maticulous in making sure all the objects are in RGB color space and sRGB is used wherever possible.
In the image below, the graphic on the left slide is a raster with transparency from PS, and on the right slide a vector graphic (PDF from Visio). The blue background is a rectangle on the master filled with a spot color (0, 44, 119 / Pantone 288C), and the text is on the page in a frame from the master. The text and blue background appear correctly on the right slide, and seem somewhat flatter on the left slide. This is only apparent in PDF form, on-screen in ID they both look correct.
Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey all. thanks for the replies; I am closer but further from a solution. I have experimented with your suggestions and this is what I found:
I re-assigned sRGB to the document and checked that Transparency Blend Space was Document RGB, no change.
Exporting to PDF/X-4 does resolve the issue IF the Blue stays as a spot color.
Exporting to PDF/X-4 with the Blue as a process color results in all pages appearing "faded", including those that are text-only, except those with shapes (simple rectanges/lines) or .ai vector graphics, with shadows.
Exporting to PDF/X-1a results in all pages appearing "faded" regradless of content.
Although PDF/X-4 and spot colors results in proper appearance, I am actually producing an Interactive PDF (transitions, embedded flash objects), and once you select "Interactive", the dialog for export options is totally different than the "Print" dialog, and there are no color options at all, so what I need is to resolve the issue pre-export, somewhere in my other settings. Swapping Spot Vs. Process colors (as Rob indicated) had no effect when exporting to Interactive.
I did notice that the option in PDF/X-4 that caused the change was on the "Output" tab, having "Output Intent Profile Name" set to standard (Document CMYK - U.S. Web Coated). If I enable that setting on any export profile and use spot colors, everything is correct (except the lack of interactive elements)
I also tried switching Color Management Policies ("Convert to Working Space" Vs. "Preserve Embedded Profiles") in Color Settings, no change.
Any other ideas? Thanks for the input!

    Does anyone knows how to get in PDF output Pantone color bars? When you check "color bars" in "marks" menu in PDF output and save your work as PDF, you'll get CMYK color bars even if there's no CMYK color at all. I don't want to draw swatches and fill them with Pantone color to get those color bars. Any idea pls.? Is it possible at all?

    Hello, I don't know the right answer.
    I look also for a solution and have the same question as you "Does anyone knows how to get in PDF output Pantone color bars? I have CMYK colors and two Pantone colors and need to know if it's possible to get in PDF output Pantone color bars (I do save as from Illustrator). And if yes, then what should I do to get this Pantone color bar in my PDF?

  • How can i automate .pdf output and organize by color/bw?

    how can i "automate" multi-page .pdf output to preflight/imposition software workflow, organized by color/bw?
    basically what i'm trying to do is create a simple output function from InDesign that allows the user to just export a multi-page .pdf into a hot folder and on through preflight and imposition software. i want to be able to tell the hot folder which pages are color -so it can separate, rename and direct color pages to a color queue and b/w pages to a b/w queue.
    i've researched indesign distiller presets and the Acrobat JDF but the JDF isn't really meant for this exact purpose and doesn't help reduce the number of steps currently necessary to manually output/rename/etc.
    is there another way that i can embed information into a .pdf that could be read by a hot folder?

    You might check out this third-party plug-in for InDesign. It may or may not help you (I've never used it). I just saw it on the new Adobe Exchange (beta in Adobe Labs). Here's the description:
    Output Factory automates printing and exporting from Adobe InDesign. Export as single pages with variable file names, output layer versions, update modified links on the fly, preflight InDesign files before output, output to several format at once and much more.
    Just select the documents, adjust settings and Output Factory will do the rest for you. Keep working with other programs while Output Factory processes InDesign files in the background. Or leave it working overnight to output hundreds of documents, and the job will be done when you return in the morning.
    Key features:
    • Output multiple InDesign files automatically
    • Output as single pages
    • Automate printing and exporting to PDF, PostScript, EPS, Flash, IDML, EPUB and several image formats
    • Output files to multiple formats at once
    • Layer versioning: output layer combinations as single files

  • Transparent shadow crossing over the image in pdf output

    Hi Folks,
    In recent days, we are frequently facing problem in using of tiff format image in InDesign. In pdf output, there is some transparent shadow crossing over the image. The problem occurs in ps to pdf as well as export pdf settings. The issue was not happened for the past 5 years.
    If it is a reproducible error, we could find the root cause of the problem. But the same issue does not occur if we create the pdf again. Please see below the differences in viewing of actual image & problematic image and suggest how to resolve this and why it happens.
    Issue 1:
    Actual view of image shown in left side; Corrupted view of image shown in right side
    Issue 2:
    Issue 3:
    Now I have suggested my team to convert all tiff images to psd image format. I really don't know whether it helps. All I need is to know the root cause of the issue. Anybody please suggest would be really helpful.

    @Tyson:
    In Issue 2, horizontal green color shading is crossing above the play/pause icon in right hand side of the image.
    In Issue 3, I have displayed the screenshot of the image placed in InDesign to show the original view of the image. But the problem shows in right hand side that is pdf output view. You can see the horizontal green color shading in 1st image and light grey color shading (at the top of "NO" text) in 2nd image.

  • Frame artifacts appearing in PDF output

    I have a problem with faint artifacts of object frames, rectangle frames and diagonals, etc. appearing in a PDF output when viewed in Acrobat Reader. They are hairline thin and are not visible in the InDesign document on screen.
    Here are the circumstances of it occurring:
    I'm using CS5.
    The PDF is output for a publication that requires PDF X-1a:2003 standard.
    The artwork, and any placed images are in CMYK. Transparency blend space is set to Document CMYK.
    The background layer for the ad. is rich black 50:0:0:100 and the artifacts are showing up over a white logo.
    Placed near the logo is a transparent background PSD image file with a drop shadow on the subject. (This object frame is one of the artifact sources) If this image is removed, the problem disappears.
    Tif files don't seem to cause the same problem, but I'm having difficulty placing tifs and retaining transparency; the background always turns white, which doesn't happen with PSDs.
    Be grateful of advice as to preventing this happening; Thanks.

    We can confirm with a screen shot, but it sounds like a flattening artifact known as stitching. This shows on screen in the PDF, and often in a low-resolution print, but usually is not a problem on press.
    You have to specifically opt to save transparency in the Tiff options dialog. You'll find once you do, though, that the stitching returns -- it's the transparency and flattening that causes this.
    You can embed a screen shot using the camera icon on the web page like this:

  • Help needed with Bridge PDF Output Module

    Hi:
    I posted this in the Photoshop forum but got no replies except to try here. I created a PDF presentation with 34 jpg images which I want to send to a publisher by using the PDF output module in Bridge. the images have the sRGB color profile embedded in them and the colors look vibrant when the jpgs are viewed in CS 4. However the PDF that opens in Adobe Reader shows the colors looking very dull. Is there a way to view the PDF in CS 4 or a way to make them appear as they should in Adobe Reader? Maybe Adobe Reader has no color management capabilities, I don't know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Differences between legend in png and pdf output

    Hello,
    i noticed that there is a difference in the legend output of a transparent color style between a png and a pdf output in MapViewer version Ver11_B071001.
    Lets say i have a sytle with 50% opacity like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
    <svg width="1in" height="1in">
      <desc/>
      <g class="color" style="stroke:#00CC00;stroke-width:2.0;fill:#00CC00;fill-opacity:127">
        <rect width="50" height="50"/>
      </g>
    </svg>If the mapresponse is a png, the style is displayed correct in the legend (with 50% opacity).
    In the pdf output the opacity looks like 100%, so no transparency at all.
    The actuall displayed geometries are displayed with the correct opacity, but not in the legend.
    Is there a workaround for this behavior?
    Thanks for help in advance,
    Dirk

    Hi Dirk,
    transparency is not yet supported in all cases for the PDF graphics.

  • Why a difference between picture quality in InDesign and PDF output

    We are comparing the CS5 pdf output of our book with the ID version. The images are MUCH clearer and the colors are better when we view a page inside of ID side by side with the PDF. The pictures actually look blurry in the PDF, even though we are outputting at 600dpi.When we export to PDF in cs6, the clarity is much better but the color is still a little off. Is this normal?

    The X-1a exporting from CS5 looks much better than the normal output, and better than the CS6 output. What would cause that?
    If you export a CMYK PDF with no profiles and open it in AcrobatPro, Acrobat's Color Management's Working CMYK space handles the preview. So here's the difference between two very different profiles Fogra Coated and SNAP Newsprint:
    When you export PDF/X-1a an output intent profile is included (usually your document's CMYK profile) and that is used in Acrobat for previewing CMYK instead of the current CMYK working space.

  • Spool to PDF output in application server

    Hi Experts,
               I have a problem with converting spool to PDF.  If I download the spool to presentation, the outputs is fine, BUT when I download it to application server and try to view it in al11, a set of characters comes out and if I try to save it on my local drive, an error message pops out stating that it could not read the file because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged.  Please help me.  I've tried doing everything I can already.  I cannot run the convertion of spool file to presentation because it always ends up as run time error, that's why I have no choice but to run it in background.  These files needs to be distributed to all branch offices.  Please, please.......help......I'm desperate......

    Hi Nikhil,

  • Problems with image on PDF output.

    In my report, I inserted an image (.jpg format) in the margin section. The background of the image is white. In Oracle Reports Builder, the image was just fine. However, when generating the PDF output, it seems like the image in  PDF was mixed with another color, or the background color has been changed. Why?
    Due to confidential information, I cannot provide the screenshot here.

    Appears to be a case of exceeding the original 100% w/h of the images.
    Generally the images should be 'prepped' in size (to match the quality when zoomed). So the starting size of the images/icons on the stage should be scaled smaller - then the zoom will factor to the original size. I hope that made some sense.

  • PDF output file from Image Capture corrupted

    This problem occurs only when scanning multiple page documents into image capture, the lower 1/4 of the first 2 pages are unreadable blurs. The page shows up ok in the Image capture preview window, but the PDF output is corrupted. The printer is a Brother MFC-7820N, I am scanning 150 dpi grayscale, US letter, no image correction, to PDF. The problem occurs with both of my computers, Quad G5 10.5.8, and a MacBook 10.5.8, this has happened since I purchased the printer, I was running 10.4 at the time. I have just scanned 1 page at a time with no problem, but now I have a large amount of documents to scan and I get the corrupt files. If anyone has seen this and found a solution, I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Ah perfect, you made me aware of a feature kink I didn’t know about! When you import stuff using Image Capture, it goes into /private/tmp/Image Capture_Import.(string of numbers and letters).
    You can navigate there by going to the Finder, hitting Command-Shift-G, and typing in /private/tmp—if the folder still exists, as it usually does for some time, sometimes even until the next restart or so—you can see the folders which should include one or more of thoe Image Capture_Import.something folders and find your files.
    Incidentally, if you want to find a “system” file, i.e., one that’s in a location normally hidden by the Finder, you can:
    1. Open up a new Spotlight/Find window in the Finder, and start searching by name.
    2. Next to where it says Search: This Mac… etc. there’s a + button. Click that, then
    3. From the dropdown menu choose Other… and look in the list for “System files” and check the “In Menu” checkbox for it.
    4. Hit OK.
    5. Choose “System Files” which is now in the dropdown, choose “are included” from the next dropdown.
    Be careful what you do with files you find using this method. It will show everything, including files essential to running your Mac properly, so unless you know exactly what you’re doing, don’t just start dragging files off this window onto your Desktop or anything, try to copy them instead by option-dragging (holding down the option key while dragging)—that way, you’re only making copies, not moving a file from where it’s supposed to be, and your Mac can find it.
    Hope this helps! If you can’t find your files this way, there are other programs which can undelete and perform other operations to recover data… this happens to everyone, no matter how long you’ve been a user.

  • PDF output not retaining same formatting as done in RTF

    Hi All,
    I have created a RTF template and need to show the output in PDF. Now in the RTF, as per the requirements, I am not enclosing my form fields in any table or inside any tabular cells. So I have to display the output something like this
    Name : Peter
    Age : 30 years
    Address : New Jersy
    Dept : Accounts
    but after placing the form fields in their right places, when I see the output in PDF, the formatting is lost and values are NOT displayed at their desired places as set in the RTF template. So I get the PDF output something like this
    Name : Peter
    Age:
    30 years
    Address :
    New Jersy
    Dept :
    Accounts
    Is there a method to fix the form fields so that they don't move and i get the output in the same way as I have designed in the RTF template.
    Any help on this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ronny

  • PDF Output Preview Inconsistent

    I have created a document in Framemaker and printed it out to a PDF.  When I check the PDF Output Preview to see if there is any color by turning off Process Black, I find an image that shows up as gray.  If I then scroll to the bottom of my PDF and then come back to this image, it no longer shows up.  I've had another person in the office check the file and the same thing happens.  The image in question was created in Illustrator before being imported into Framemaker.  All the colors were set to black.
    Is this a bug in how the PDF is displaying the Output Preview?  Or is there an issue with the image?

    I ordered a book a couple of weeks ago with the advice of AppleCare people responsible for printed product, that the PDF which is seen in the purchase process is what the final output would look like.
    However, and to my disappointment, it was not the case. Indeed, the PDF was cropped on the edges. The AppleCare people ordered a reprint to see if any change would appear, but unfortunately it was not the case.
    Now the matter is within AppleCare quality control's jurisdiction and I do not know yet what will be their conclusion. I'll keep you posted if you are interested.

  • Best way to produce PDF output from Classic ASP

    I have Adobe Professional 9.2 and LiveCycle ES Designer 8.1. I need to change a Classic ASP web application to produce a PDF report. The way I see it I have three options:
    1) create native PDF output using open source libraries.
    2) create an FDF form with Adobe Pro as a template and use FDF libraries from Adobe to substitute text in the template
    3) create an XML form with LiveCycle as a template and do direct text substitution into the XML.
    I created a PDF with LiveCycle and prior to saving, unchecked the "save PDF files compressed" in tools/options. I don't want any text boxes, just labels, and in some of the labels I will put distinguishable text. When the web application uses the template it will find various text strings in the XML stream and substitute.
    What's the best way to do this? Is there a better way of doing substitution into the LiveCycle template? I would like to stay with LiveCycle. But from code samples I've seen, FDF substitution is very straightforward and possibly easier. I also thought LiveCycle is supposed to be the way to go instead of Adobe Pro. Thanks

    I cannot speak about theother methods but I can speak about the XFA method. In most cases people will bind the xml to the rawValue property of the field thereby filling the field with the value. However there are other bindable properties. Caption is one of them. first you have to turn on the Dynamic Properties. Click on th efield you want to control on on the Object palette click the icon as shown below:
    A new menu will open like this:
    Turn that option on and the Caption will turn a different color and will become a link. Click on the link and then you can map the caption to a node in your XML structure. This assumes that you have created a Data Connection to bind with.
