Places disappearing

I was a geography major in college and collect maps. I've spent quite a bit of time geo-tagging my iPhoto pictures. I recently upgraded from a 2011 13" MacBook Pro running Mavericks to a brand new 13" retina MacBook Pro with Yosemite. My original transfer (manually, not with the Migration Assistant) went very smoothly and all of my albums, books, and places were just the way I had them on my old MacBook Pro. I have a large iPhoto library with about 150,000 pictures, 3,500+ events, 1,000 folders and 7,000 albums and 150 books.
Unfortunately, with the Yosemite version of iPhoto my places are slowly disappearing from my pictures. Each time I close and open iPhoto some of the pins have disappeared from the maps. I started putting some back manually but they're disappearing faster than I can replace them. I recently discovered that, in fact, they're actually being consolidated. All 800+ pictures I have from the Los Angeles area are now all stuck under ONE pin/location simply called "Los Angeles". If I go to the "Manage My Places" screen, all of the places I added are still there but the pictures have become detached from them.
Here is the "Manage My Places" with all of the places/pins I've manually added over time near L.A.:
But here is how the Places map appears (note, I did start adding a few back manually, before there was only the one place/pin near downtown L.A.):
So, before I spend too much time manually adding all my places back, why are they disappearing or consolidating? Is that bit of location information part of the JPEG? What other parts of my JPEGs are disappearing? I still have a backup of my old MacBook Pro, so I could certainly restore my old iPhoto library. But I've just spent a month taking pictures, adding captions, adding places and it would take me about a month to get caught back up! I've done all the built-in rebuilding available and run the "scan images for location" on multiple albums/folders. But it's not restoring my places.
-Doug

Bump! No one? Does no one else use the "Places"? Anyone else losing all their places as they're being replaced by one, single pin? Building up all my places over the years has worked great. Now when I manually geotag a picture, by typing the name in and choosing one of the options listed, it puts the tag in a place somewhere else (usually nearby). So, the thousands and thousands of pictures I once had tagged at the Re-Bar in Seattle are now completely gone. There's 146 pictures geotagged there according to my Places map & pins. The pins are just disappearing faster than I can put them back. Every single block on this map should have two or three pins. How do I recover the places?

  • My user name place disappeared

i tried copying my place "user name" to an external drive and it went poof. Where did it go?

Do not worry. It's not gone. You just removed the link from Finder side bar.
Open a new Finder window, navigate from your internal hard drive through the Users folder.
You'll see your home folder. Drag it to the Finder side bar.

  • Places tab in Photos disappeared?

I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS4 today, and enjoyed the new Places functionality in the Photos app for a while. But then the tab to switch between Albums and Places disappeared, and I can't seem to figure out how to get it back. Photos is stuck in the "Albums" side of things.
I tried restarting the app, the phone, and doing a hard reset. No avail. Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

I'm seeing a similar/related issue on my iPhone 4. When I earlier sync'd my iPhone 3GS (prior to upgrading to an iPhone 4), all of my earlier photos came across as geotagged in Places. However, when I switched to an iPhone 4, I set it up as a new phone (on Apple's recommendation), and none of the geotagging info came across to Places. I go to the Places feature in the Photo app, and the only thing that shows up are the photos I've taken with the new iPhone 4.
However, there's another twist/bug to this: when I take a new photo, it doesn't show up in Places until I shut down my iPhone 4 completely, then restart. After the iPhone comes back up, the newly-taken iPhone 4 photo(s) show up. Older photos still don't show up.
Very frustrating, since this was working on my 3GS, and was an important capability to me.
(Have restored the iPhone thrice, removed/readded photos, confirmed the photos have geotagging metadata in iPhoto, and rebuilt my iPhoto library, and most recently, on Apple's recommendation, switched for a replacement iPhone 4, and still have the same set of issues.) No legacy photos' places showing up on Places app. If I take a new photo with the iPhone 4, only shows up after turning the iPhone 4 off completely, then restarting from scratch as a new phone.

  • IPhoto's 'Manage my Places' has stopped showing map and pins!!!?

    I am using iPhoto '11 version 9.2.3.
Recently I stupidly decided to undertake the task of adding location info to all of my extensive library, spanning approx 15 years and a ridiculous amount of individual locations.
Anyway this task will now eat away at me until i have completed it, (or something similarly unnecesary takes over)
So, i've been at it for a few weeks now, but all of a sudden today (haven't been on it for a few days so may have started a little while back) i am now unable to edit the size of the 'vicinity' around a pin.
I am selecting 'Manage my Places' tool from the 'Window' menu at the top of the screen as i was before. But now, when the list of my places comes up, to the right, there is no longer a map with the pins from the hilighted 'place'.... it is just grey as the pic below shows.....
This is now hugely frustrating for me, as you can imagine. Does anyone know anything about this? or are having the same issue?
Thanks in advance for anticipated response.....

    @MacFishy,
I had the same problem with IPhoto '09  8.1.2   The maps in Places disappeared on June 2nd.
I was able to fix Places by DOWNLOADING SAFARI and RE-INSTALLING.
A Best Buy Geek Squad tech fixed my Places on June 3rd.  He told me the problem was with Safari, not IPhoto. However, I don't know what he did to fix the problem.  (He could not have re-installed Safari without me knowing)
Unfortunately, the maps disappeared a week later.  I used the Geek Squad again, but could not contact the same tech.  Several techs tried, but could not fix Places.  The last tech directed me to Apple.com.
I was able to restore the maps for the individual pictures from discussions on Apple.com by turning the WiFi off and on.  The large world map did not return.
On June 24th, I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.  Interestingly they were unaware of the Places problems.  When I mention that a tech said the problem was Safari, not IPhoto, he suggested that I try downloading Safari and re-installing.   Well that worked!  So far it is still okay.
I hope others will find this helpful,
    Peggy

  • WRT54G in My Network Places

Hello, I had been having some problems with my connection and an Exception GIFException in Module aviWUSB54Gv4.dll@002516B. Then is just went away as suddenly as it showed up. However, when the error was gone I noticed that my connection/security settings were back to what they were when I first installed the WRT54G (version6) wireless g broadband adapter and the WUSB54G (version 4) network adapter. I had saved the directions I was given some time ago for securing my wireless network. I launched IE and typed in 192.168.1.1 and logged in. Once on the setup page I selected the wireless settings to change the network name, change the channel from 6 to 11 and selected the apply/save settings button. However after doing that I lost my internet connection and it has taken me all day to get it back (and I'm not really sure just how I managed to get it back). For the longest time I kept getting a message stating that "cannot connect with the access point" I went to start and clicked on my network places and noticed that the icon for WRT54G is gone. I tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling the software, resetting the wireless broadband router and a few other things but none of it was fixing the problem and using the run/cmd/ipconfig options did nothing as well so like I said, I have not idea how I managed to get my connection back. Anyway, I would like to reset my settings and make the wirless connection more secure but am afraid to try it again. I also went back to the My Network Places and the icon for the WRT54G still is not there. Any suggestions would be GREATLY Appreciated. TIA Lisa

Hello Again, I really would appreciate it if someone could please be so kind as to help me. I still do not have the little icon for the WRT54G in the My Network Places. I do have my internet connection but that little icon is missing (I won't worry about it if it isn't a problem). Also, if someone could give me the steps to follow to secure my wireless settings (instead of being listed as disabled) again I would greatly appreciate it. I only ask since when I tried to follow the instructions I had been given before I ended up with the problem of loosing my internet connection completely and that is also when the little icon in the my network places disappeared as well. TIA

  • After sorting photos into albums, the albums disappeared on me. I dragged and dropped the photos and went back to check that they were in place before exiting the program. When I went back, the folder was there but no albums. Help!

Working on an IMac - with IPhoto v.9.6
This is my first experience with IPhoto... trying to move files from a PC over to a Mac.
I don't have a ton of photos but I created about 6 albums - standard albums - and dragged and dropped individual photos into each of the albums. I named each of the albums as well so I would know what was in each. After i was finished, I created a folder called 2014 and moved each of the albums into that folder. Before moving ANY of the albums, I opened each of them up to make sure that all the photos I wanted in each were indeed there - and since there were some errors on my part, I deleted any duplicates first. SO, I KNOW the photos were actually in each of the albums BEFORE i moved them into the 2014 folder.
My intention was to then delete the photo files in my document file but once I got there I thought I would go back and double check the IPhoto file just to make sure... and the pictures were NOT in the albums where I had placed them... is there a need to save this before you move on and if so, to where and how? I was under the impression that once files were moved to albums, they remain there.
The photos are still in the photo library but unsorted now again... I cannot even open the 2014 folder at this point.
    Thanks for any help!!

Was back on IPhoto this morning. The folder did not open at all so I deleted it. Beside Albums, nothing showed at all. It was like I had done no work at all except to import my photo folder. Nothing was in my trash bin either.
I started again and created one album at a time. I dragged and dropped photos into the album and exited out of IPhoto, opened up other programs and then returned to IPhoto to see if the album was still there and it was this time. I created a second album and did the same thing. This time, for some reason, the albums seem to be staying in place. I am not doing anything differently than last time. After creating three albums, I created a folder called 2014 and dragged and dropped the three albums into the folder and exited IPhoto. They were still there when I returned - YEAH! It seems to be working - for now! I am keeping my fingers crossed that my photos are not going to disappear but I am not going to delete my photo folder from my files just in case!
Thanks for the suggestions but this may just have been a funny glitch... not sure what happened. I didn't change anything or do anything differently this time except that I am doing it one album at a time and exiting the program between creating each of them and coming back to check... very strange.

  • Aperture 3 and Places - pins disappear

I've been scanning slides to TIFF, importing them into Aperture 3, and assigning places. I've found that with many of my files, when I quit Aperture and later relaunch, the pins are gone. Moreover, I have actually watched pins disappear when I deselect a file in places view.
This happens even when I've written IPTC data to master. It has been inconsistent about which files drop their pins - one file might lose its pin one time, and retain it another.
This is extremely frustrating - has anyone else experienced it? If so, have you figured out how to stop it?
    Thanks!
    Alex

When you say your "pins disappear", are you saying that the Latitude and Longitude fields in your Metadata are being wiped out? (Select the GPS pulldown preset on your Metadata tab to see them, if you haven't added these to a custom Metadata View yet).
And are you sure that you don't have some sort of filter on that is making the "pins disappear"? I found that Aperture would often turn on a Places filter after an action. I am still trying to get used to how Places works, after adding GPS info from an AMOD logger to about 7000 images shot in Argentina. Sometimes I thought Aperture was broken, only to find that I was not using the new (but poorly documented) feature correctly.

I can't get rid of icons in Places -- according to the manual, you're supposed to be able to just drag them off and they go "Pouf!” and disappear. But no...

Just "ctrl" and mouseclick the desired icon and select "Remove from Sidebar" from the little pop up window.. That should do the trick (in your vertical "PLACES" column)
NB: if you want to get rid of icons on the top (horizontal) bar of your finder window, then you need to go to the item with the mouse, press "cmd" ("apple" key) and drag the icon off the finder window onto your desktop and let go (if you want the "Pouf!" effect

  • IPhoto disappeared. Question mark in its place.  Help

Help! My iPhoto application disappeared and there is only a question mark in its place.  I do not have the disks to restore.  what do I do??

If yhou have Time Machine running on your Mac go to the Applications folder, enter Time Maching, go back till iDVD is there and restore it.
Otherwise you can contact Apple and for about $10 get replacement disks for hyour Mac.  Lastly, you'll have to purchase iLife 09 and do a custom install of iDVD from it.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • PS CS6 OS X - "Place" dialog box disappears when I try to drag a folder into it.

We are moving to CS6 at work currently. In our workflow, we need to move from folder to folder (hundreds of them) often, and I do this quickly by dragging the desired folder into the open/save/place dialogs. Doing this immediately takes me to the folder I need without requiring me to navigate there manually.
In CS6, when I need to replace contents of a smart object (which I need to do proably 30 times every day), I right-click on the smart object's name and select "Replace Contents". A "Place" dialog opens and I can drag the folder of the asset I need into the dialog, but the dialog disappears when I click off of Photoshop to drag the folder. This happens in all screen modes.
What can I do here? It is impractical to keep source folders in the left bar of the Place dialog (there are literally hundreds of folders I use).
CS5 let me drag files from the Finder into the open/save/place dialogs. CS6 apparently does not.
    Thanks

    Try this:
    1) Open Photoshop CS6
    2) Open an existing file by double clicking it or opening with dialog)
    3) Select File > Open, and click on the Desktop
The Open dialog does not vanish?
This is Mac only. Never tried it in Windows.

  • After rebooting, why do folders in Places sidebar disappear?

After shutdown and start-up, some folders disappear from the Place sidebar while others are intact. Why is that and what can I do to fix it? Is it a library preference issue? I have used the Mac Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions but that does not work at all.
    Thank you.

    Which Folders?
With Finder displayed on your menu bar, go to: Finder > Preferences > select the Sidebar tab and check the boxes next to the Sidebar Items that you want showing.
I could be wrong, but I think that only the Folders from your Home Folder that have the little symbols in them will stick in the Places Sidebar and that ever thing else should be placed into one of them?
