Placing a ArchiCAD DXF into CS4 Illustrator

Hi everyone,
I am trying to open a DXF file into CS4 Illustrator but it's just not happening. The DXF is being provided by Graphisoft ArchiCAD. I've also been sent DXF files from autoCAD to test on to see if these open which also I'm afraid to say don't open either. The message I got for these was 'The operation cannot complete because there isn't enough memory (RAM) available', I have checked and there is more than enough memory.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Regards,
Fi

It worked fine for me…when I first double clicked on the file it opened Illustrator but not the file but when I doubled clicked again after AI was opened the file opened.
You can try File>Place or File Open if Double clicking on the fies icon does not work.
I will post this in the forum as well. You should not have any problems with this file which is AutoCAD 2000 or later.
I see now you are concerned about the lines not being connected perhaps this is not AutoCAD 2000 I think AutoCAD 2002 and after will open in Illustrator as object and not paths I just happen to select one that was connected but I see others are not you might need Concatenate for this if you had Concatenate by Rick Johnson already then you do not need to purchase it you can download the CS 4 version free.

Does anyone know a plug-in and/or program that could help me?
    Thanks.

CAD-COMPO 2 Mac (2) is a plug-in software includes "BPT-Pro2" and "EXDXF-Pro2". "BPT-Pro2" is a software to add a highly functional 2D-CAD program into Illustrator. "EXDXF-Pro2" provides that to import CAD standard DXF files to Illustrator, and to export AI files to CAD. This Product is Plug-in Software...

  • Exporting .dxf From CS4 Illustrator for Cutting

I am looking for a way to cleary  Export .dxf files for Cutting (ioline Specifically)
The problem  first occured when, I installed CS4, (this method was flawless in CS2)
The  problem I am having is inconsistant, jagged, and incorrect lines when I  load the export from CS4
    Into the Ioline Rip Software.
Anyone that  is familar with exporting for flatbed or roll cutters that can help me  find a solution to this,
In the meantime I have to save the file  as .eps then load the file in Corel and export as a .plt from there.
I  can't stand Corel, so anyway to bypass this process would totally make  my days easier.
I also have the Latest version of Wasatch, and I heard a  small rumor that I could do my export dirty work in that...?

    RedCurlz,
Rereading your OP, I made a search and found this two year old thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1249346#1249346
As it appears, it seems that you will have to use CS2, or modify the .dxf file (simplify, create an .eps, or something else).
Seemingly, the curves should be jagged already when viewed in Illy (CS3/CS4). Is that the case?
Someone may know whether this CS3/CS4 bug has been fixed in CS5.
    Someone?

  • Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode

Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
I am using windows XP with Adobe Creative suite 2.
In both Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 have the same color settings.
If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
If you look at the ''Document Info'' window you can now see that the RGB file is now a CMYK file. Is this a good working habit ?
    Thanks in advance. :)

    >Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
Please explain why you would do such a thing? (Why RGB, and why EPS.)
    >If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
    Yes.
You are working in CMYK mode presumably because your Illustrator document is destined for output on a PostScript device -- e.g., a printing press. That means that your RGB image will undergo a space conversion somewhere in the process, and the questions are when and how?
The issue is compounded by the fact that Illustrator ignores color profiles embedded in EPS files by Photoshop. (Just another reason not to use EPS.)
By performing the conversion yourself in Photoshop, you take control of the process and ensure predictable color.

  • Exporting DXF with Coordinates Illustrator to CAD program

    Hi,
I often have to export graphics from Illustrator CS5 for use in Catia or Pro Engineer.
Usually, if it's a graphic I have made myself, all I do is drag the 0,0 on my rulers to the position on the artwork where I require the coordinate system to be placed in the DXF file and that's fine.
However, recently I have received files from other sources which need to be converted from a PDF to a DXF for use in my CAD programs and I am having difficulty relocating the coordinate system to the desired location.
For instance, if I convert the PDF to DXF without moving my 0,0 location on my rulers, sometimes the coordinate system is top left or bottom left of the artboard the PDF has been imported into Illy on. (It varies file to file). So I figured that if I move the 0,0 location of my rulers to where I want the coordinate system to appear, that should work because it usually does so in artwork I create. But it always gets overwritten. The only way I can counter this is to assume that the coordinate system is bang-on the corner of the artboard and move all my artwork to the corner and then convert the file to DXF.
I guess my question is, for those of you who have a similar task to do, is this the only way I can relocate the coordinate system (by moving the artwork to the corner, which seems a bit dodgy cos it's all on assumption) or is there a more accurate way to do so.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sonya

I o not know if that is the only way but I will point out the reason you might be seeing 0,0 either at the to left or lower left is that in Cs 5 it has been change to the top left i CS 4 and earlier it was the  bottom left, so depending on what version it was created from it might change this for you as well a way of changing this for you is to ask from them to save the file as an ai fie first in a version that is CS or earlier than make that a pdf.
Or what might be easier is to live with it until everyone changes to CS 5 or later?
Or make it a symbol and use the orientation proxy in the symbols options to select the orientation you desire.

  • Import Existing Cartoon Into Adobe Illustrator

I found a cartoon on the internet that has given me an idea for a cartoon that I want to do for a friend. Is there a way that I can import this cartoon into Adobe Illustrator and then proceed to alter it to suit my own purposes? I need to squeeze it, stretch it, subtract from it, add to it, and generally change it until I come up with a completely different cartoon of my own.
I have tried placing the original art on a surface in Adobe Illustrator, but the Adobe tools have no effect on it whatsoever. I am unable to change anything. All I want to do is use the nucleus of an idea and expand upon it to the point that it no longer has any resemblance to the original.

Ok, I now see you dont know much about computers and all that.
    How to make a screenshot:
    1. Press the Print Screen [sometimes also shown as Prt Scr] button on your keyboard.
    2. Open Microsoft Paint.
    3. Goto Edit > and choose Paste.
    4. Goto File > Save.
    5. Choose where you want to save the file.
    6. Choose to Save the file as: JPEG.
    7. Type a filename, and save press Save.
    8. Go to www.tinypic.com and press the Browse button and select your image file, which you saved 1 steps ago.
    9. Press the big upload button.
    10. Goto the box which says Direct link, select the text inside and Right-Click > Copy
    11. Paste that link here.
    Then we can continue.
However, I think you need to learn the basics of Illustrator first, as you dont know the basic functions very well.

  • Placing a Pshop .eps into .ai and then placing in InDesign...?

Our Art Department is starting to use InDesign more and more after being mainly Illustrator for years. I'm doing some experiments to see how InDesign will fit into our existing processes.
Basically I'm trying to figure out a way to get Illustrator artwork that includes linked Pshop images into InDesign, and end up with print-quality output.
So here's what I did: I created an illustration in Illustrator. This illustration includes a link to a TIF and/or an EPS high-resolution Photoshop image that lives on a network. (The EPS image may have a photoshop mask.) The illustration also includes text with live fonts. I save the .ai file WITHOUT linked images (our usual and necessary process).
Now I place the .ai file directly into InDesign. The experiment I've run shows, to my astonishment, that the TIF and EPS photoshop images do NOT need to be available, nor do the fonts have to be activated, in order for this placed .ai file to look OK onscreen in InDesign (although the font looks a bit chewed). But PDFs from InDesign look good.
    This is cool.
Yet I'm suspicious because I can't tell (given our lack of high-end printer output in our department) if I'm getting a high-res printout of those Pshop images.
If the process I've come up with works, we've solved a lot of problems...! But since the world of graphics is fraught with unexpected problems, I'm afraid to put total trust in my own experience...
Are there potential problems I'm overlooking with this process? Will we indeed get high-resolution output?

Thanks for the reply. I wondered about that! I noticed that the dialog window, when I was placing the .ai into InDesign, said "Place PDF (myfile.ai)".
Question: If, as you said, <<Illustrator by default saves a PDF along with the AI.>>, how does Illustrator know at what resolution that PDF should be saved?
Incidentally, someone also suggested that, to be safe, we outline the fonts and then Object/Rasterize the art (a copy of it), prior to placing into InDesign. But it sounds from your reply that this isn't necessary...? I'd sure like to avoid making extra "versions"; we have enough trouble tracking/storing one version!
Oh, and we're aware of the EPS obsolesence issue... unfortunately we have a collection of thousands of Pshop EPS images. We've done some experimentation with switching to .PSD, but ran into some problems, including 1. our image organization/viewing/portfolio software doesn't recognize the paths in .psd images and shows them incorrectly, and 2. when we release a mask in Illustrator, it also releases the .psd path.
These problems aren't insurmountable, we're just haven't yet been able to put the required time towards a coordinated switchover and getting everyone (our department, prepress suppliers, printers, etc.) on the same page.
(My apologies for turning this into an Illustrator discussion in an InDesign forum. Software is so intertwined these days...)

  • Placing MS Word to InDesign CS4

    Products:
    Windows 7
    InDesign CS4 x64
    Word 2007
    Problem:
Hyphenation and Align to Baseline Grid commands do not remain set if the ID document is saved, closed, and re-opened.
    Description:
I've placed a Word doc into an InDesign doc with reasonable trouble, but have now encountered something that I have been unable to find a solution to fix. I will close the Word doc, place it into InDesign, make some changes to the formatting of the text, save changes, close the InDesign doc, re-open the InDesign doc, and two commands in particular did not keep during the save: removing the hyphenation toggle and align with baseline grid.
The hyphenation toggle and align to baseline grid are located in the paragraph module. I have unchecked the hyphenate command, selected align to grid, saved the doc, but they do not keep.
How can I get these two commands to remain set so that I do not have to reset them each time I open the ID document?
    Thanks

You seem to have this solved, but in case you don't know, there is a hierarchy to settings and how they apply. With something selected, the settings apply only to the selection. In a document with nothing selected, new settings become the default for the document, but don't affect existing content unless you change it. With no documents open, new settings become application defaults for new work, but don't affect existing documents.

When a paste copied text into InDesign Illustrator but without the trace?
It seems incredible to do a composition in Illustrator and copy-paste to make InDesign and draw all the text.
I'm using CS4 but I see in the help that CS5 is the same.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, I know that I can copy the text with the text tool. Although I would like to copy / paste from Illustrator to InDesign for editing if you need without having to play through two programs.
    Thanks for everything!

  • How to install Fonts into Adobe Illustrator

I am using a computer that runs on Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Hi there I want to know  how to install new Fonts / Typefaces into Adobe Illustrator CS3?
I am also curious as to how I would install fonts on other Adobe CS applications?
All help, links, and resources much appreciated.

I just dragged and dropped the downloaded ".tff" font files into in Font Book icon in theDock and a new window popped up and just click "Install Font" button.
That works, too. Sets are, more than anything else, just a way to organize your fonts by project. By dropping the font in, it should now be listed in one of the standard headings like "Computer".
The new fonts have automatically loaded into Adobe Illustrator CS3 without having to close it.
Better apps will see when fonts have been enabled or disabled without having to close and restart them. Microsoft Word (and likely the entire Office suite) does not.

  • Pasting from Microsoft Word into Adobe Illustrator...problem

Hello gang, I'm a professional comic book letterer and I recently decided to upgrade from using TextEdit to using Microsoft Word for all of my script copy pasting that I have to do.
In TextEdit when I copy a page from a comic script it will then paste into Adobe Illustrator beautifully. Retains line breaks and formatting really well (doesn't remember bolds or italics, but oh well). However, when I paste from the Word version of the same script, all the line breaks disapear, leaving me with a big square block of text, making it hard for me to easily find dialogue to use on the page.
Does anyone have a solution for this? Is this a known issue with Word? I can't seem to find anything about it on the net.
I'm using Word 11 for Mac version 14.2.1 I think it is and Adobe Illustrator CS3 for Mac.
Running Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro for what that's worth. Verion 10.6.8
    thanks,

When I tried to place a 12 pages Word doc in Illustrator CS5, the same way told by John_Danek, I could see a small + sign on the bottom right corner of the text box. If you double click that text box, you can see page 2 of the doc. Similarly, you can view all the pages of your Word doc in Illie.
    OR
If save your content in a PDF and then place the PDF in Illustrtaor. This will help you retain formatting as well as will allow you selecting page numbers of your document you want to place.

  • Importing keyboard shortcuts from PS CS3 into CS4?

Is it possible to import keyboard shortcuts from PS CS3 into CS4?
    And how?

Mmh, you could possibly simply copy over the respective files from your preset directory (Documents and Settings/Matjaz/Application Data/Adobe/Photoshop CS3/Presets/Keyboard Shortcuts). Not sure if it's safe, though. Never tried.

  • Can't copy image from Adobe Reader into Adobe Illustrator

I am attempting to copy an image from a document in Adobe Reader 8 into Adobe Illustrator CS3. When I try this I get this message in Illustrator:
"Quicktime^TM and a decompressor are needed to see this picture."
I am running OSX 10.5.2, with Quicktime Player 7.4.1. I just purchased and registered Quicktime Pro but that has not helped.
What I am trying to do is use the image select tool in Reader to select an illustration out of a long PDF document so just opening the PDF in Illustrator is not convenient, nor is extracting the image, saving it in another format and then importing it. Before I upgraded, I was running Illustrator 10 on MAC OS X10.3. I could use the image select tool in Adobe Reader to copy an image to the clipboard, and then paste that image into in Illustrator document. Very convenient. For some reason that no longer works with Illustrator CS3 and OS X 10.5.

"Try opening the document in Illustrator. There will options for importing different pages etc."
I can do that, but it is for my purposes much more convenient to do what I used to be able to do: open a document in Reader, scroll down through the document to find the image I want, select only that image (not the entire page) and then paste it into an already-open Illustrator document. Now what I have to do is 1. use Reader to find the image in the document and note the page 2. Open that page of the document in Illustrator and then 3. copy that page into the illustrator document I am working on and 4. crop to just get the image.
