Placing a jpg in Elements11

Why can't I do this? Feeling like such a fool but too stressed to work it out.

Sure thing, thanks so much.

  • Edits to a JPG Smart Object  in a layered TIFF file:  DOES NOT Save to the originally placed file?

When placing a JPG as a Smart Object (and even multiples) into a layered TIFF file:  If I open each layered Smart Object JPG, make changes as a JPG and SAVE the file, I expect the ORIGINAL SOURCE JPG file that was placed to also be saved- I thought that is the file I was editing!
This SUCKS!  To capture my edits to the original individual files:  I now have to open each layed TIF file, Edit each smart object JPG and SAVE AS to overwrite the original and capture my changes?  Is this the way its always been- I don't think it has.  How can I edit a Smart Object file in a layered document and ALSO update the SOURCE file?

You should edit the original jpg, and then replace the smart object. There is a utility that makes this easier, if you do many of these. Looks liek this

  • Smart Object opening as .jpg instead of .psb

I received a file from another person – I didn't create it. It contains a Smart Object, which is indicated in the layer thumbnail. When I double-click to edit the smart object, a .jpg file opens, not a .psb. I know I can flatten it after making the changes and re-save it so the Smart Object updates in the PSD, but what I want to know is, why does this happen in the first place? Shouldn't a Smart Object always open a .psb?

If you placed a JPG file, then the smart object is a JPG file.
PSB is only used when Photoshop creates the smart object from layers, because PSB can contain everything in a Photoshop document.

  • Blurry Images when Placing

When I place images on triggers or slideshows or anything in general, the images appear at a very low quality and very blurry (even if I don't re-size them in Muse). My images are 300dpi and I've tried placing both jpgs and pngs. But the resolution is very bad when I place them. How can I fix this?

giulial92162650 perhaps turn off the "Convert opaque PNG to JPEG" option in the Content panel of Site Properties?

  • "Placing" color images only B&W?

    I'm a novice PS user.
When I place a color .jpg image, it places as a B&W image even though the image is in color.
Am I doing something wrong or using the wrong function?

What is the color space of the document you are placing the jpg into? Like, if you start off with file, new, 'x' size - make sure you select RGB color image (?)

  • Unable to use gradient tool on placed photo Photoshop CS Trial

I placed a jpg photo over another photo and attempted to use gradient tool tool but it indicated cannot smart object cannot be edited directly.  It gives me a circle with a line through it with this statement.  I am operating a trial version of CS5 on Windows XP. What  am I missing.  Use to use CS3 and Photoshop 5.0.  Must be another step.  Cannot answer.

You could double click on the smart object icon to edit the smart object contents
or rasterize the the smart object.
You could also use a gradient overlay layer style or gradint fill adjustment layer.

  • When I place a jpg into timeline

when placing a jpg into the time line the jpg is huge, I then have to go in and adjust the   correct size. How do place a jpg without adjusting the size. Also, when using a motion anim. How do I place the start of the motion correctly into the time line. I quite don't understand those little arrow in viewer and or sequence window?
    Thank you iBrain,
    BC

Your jpeg image(s) are larger than the video frame - that's why you have to resize them.  If you are doing high def, then the video frame may be 1920x1080, standard def 720x480, etc.  (Check your sequence settings for the frame size of your video.)  If your jpeg image is larger than that, you will have to scale it down.  Think actual pixel dimensions, not dpi.  This is video, not printing.
It's best to resize your images before importing them into FCE.  Resize your images slightly larger than the video frame size ... but generally not larger than 2x the video frame size.    That way you will still have to scale down slightly in FCE but it's better to have to do that than to have to scale up a small image.
It would be best to post your motion question as a separate topic.

  • Setting up to View Folder Contents in Browser

I have placed 40 jpg images in a folder on my web site. How
can I let visitors view the file names (folder contents) &
    select an image by name.
I hate to have to make a page & enter all 40 image file
names with links to the files. Is there a better way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

You could enable directory browsing in the directory, but
    then you'll
need to accept the rather ugly server default index page. If
    it were me,
I'd write a short script that read the directory and
    displayed a more
attractive listing. How you would go about that would depend
    on what
server scripting language(s) you have available on the
    server.

  • CS4 – What am I doing wrong?

I am using CS4 on the Windows platform.
STEP 1 - I was creating “Out of Bounds” photos. My “new” was 8½ x 11 landscape at 300 dpi. I placed a jpg that was about say 12megs. LARGE FILE!
STEP 2 - After creating my psd I did flatten the file, crop it (reduced size), and made 200dpi to get file to about 6-8 megs and saved as a jpg.
It would not email(!) so I opened in Corel and dinked with it finally changing it to an 8 bit mode and it would email fine.
How, in Photoshop, can I do steps 1 and 2 and get it to work? What am I missing\doing wrong? I can't believe it's that hard and I am missing something VERY simple.
I will be slow to respond to helps today – will respond after day trip.
Thanks in advance for any help.

First, thanks for responding. I have no problem you questioning my question…that’s why I like to call people rather than email or post things if possible. Let me try to clarify.
The directions I was given to create a OOB were to 1. create a new file 2. and PLACE the photo, 3. create a new layer for the background color, 4. and later a new layer for the frame to be created. In the process the photo is rastorized.
I understand lowering the image size and the dpi (ppi) adjustments. After I flatten the whole psd file and save it as a jpg I have a file size of 26.4 megs. After I RESIZE and RESAMPLE I get a very reasonable 5.61 meg file with a mode of RGB and 16 Bits/Channel.
So far I see nothing unusual with what I’ve done and have a reasonable file size to email.
When I email it using a web mail program it won’t attach so I reduced the size to under 5 megs, still no cigar. The web mail program, Yahoo, has a higher file limit than 5 megs, yet oddly enough when it was sending it grew to 8 megs. Maybe this is normal but I have usually seen the size reduce, not enlarge.
With that scenario, I then went to Corel and made it an 8 bit file (I know I could have done it in PhotoShop), and then it worked.
That boils down to why it won’t work as a 16 bit file
So before responding to your posts I went back in a did exactly as stated above (I do save psd files!). Using a POP account I sent it to another POP account and it seemed to work. I then sent from a POP account to Yahoo account and the file showed in thumbnail, but would not open. In Yahooo file size now shows 5.85 megs. If I downloaded (not saved) and opened in a graphics program it would open, but refuses to open in the web mail program. So, could it be Yahoo, more than likely….however today the larger file is attaching.
Ok, maybe the electrons weren’t “electring” and the bytes suffered from “underbyte” yesterday and this morning.
I did have to respond to your posts out of respect for you taking time to read and answer my initial post. If I was premature in posting I apologize, but I was baffled!
    Respectfully,

  • Premiere Elements 12 Disk Menu

I placed a JPG photo in the background of the disk menu using the pan and zoom menu template. I adjusted the photo resolution to 1920 by 1080. The video is 1080p 29.97. It leaves a big black border around the photo and there is no way to make the photo bigger. I also tried the photo with a higher resolution with the same problem. The PC is Windows 8.1 -  64 bit. I also seem to get the same problem if I use 1080p video for the background. Any fixes besides getting a better program?

Premiere Elements 12/12.1 on Windows 8.1 64 bit.
Video or Still Background Replacement does not necessarily mean replacement of the whole background. It all depends on how the theme .psd background layer was created. Most of the time the background replacement is a partial one because of the design.
If you want to customize the disc menu in this regard, then you go into the background layer in the Layers Palette of the theme's psd file and edit it. The major psd editor for this purpose would be Photoshop CS or higher. However, if only a background replacement at the.psd level is required, the task might be completed successfully using Photoshop Elements Editor.
Please take a look at one of my blog posts for the how to details for such a task.

Also you may have to do some resizing of the scene selection page thumbnails to get rid of any black borders around them.
Please review and consider and then we can discuss this further if interested and need clarification.
    Thank you.

  • Photoshop CS2 issues

I am having a couple issues with Photoshop CS2. I am running CS2 Std on a HP XW4400 stock system with XP Pro SP2 and all the latest updates. CS2 Std has had all the available product updates applied.
What is happening is the following:
    1. Photoshop will randomly crash with a generic application failure message. This can happen while doing just about anything in Photoshop from opening a file to clicking on a tool. The windows event viewer lists a generic application hang.
    2. Placing a jpg will not always work, sometimes I get the "no supported filter" message and sometimes it works.
    3. Saving as anything other than a PSD, EPS, or PDF will crash the save dialog(sometimes Photoshop) sometimes it works. When it crashes the dialog sometimes trying to save immediately after will work.
I have done tried the following to try to resolve the issue:
    Checked for new updates
Checked for Adobe Knowledge base articles regarding the issues
Ran hardware diagnostics for HD, and RAM. Did a disk check on XP Everything checked out OK
    repair install
    uninstall and reinstall
uninstall removal of all registry entries and reinstall
Format and reload of the entire OS, re-application of all patches, re-installation of CS2 and all patches
My next try after the forum is likely several hours on the phone with Adobe support
The issues occur with multiple files and filetypes in multiple network and local computer locations.
    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Check your computer's memory using a utility such as Memtest 86+ (free download at www.memtest.org). If you see any errors at all, remove half of the memory sticks and re-test. Repeat until you have one module that tests clean, then add them back one at a time. If an error appears, mark the added module as bad, remove it, and replace with the remaining one(s) until all have been tested.
If you have a Microsoft Mouse and Intellipoint software, try uninstalling Intellipoint. There was a known issue with this in CS3 but it may not apply to CS2.
Crashes on my system were traced to bad memory and once fixed, it was rock-solid.

  • Why do my Photoshop images show up smaller in Illustrator?

So I created a series of images in PhotoShop. 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels at 300dpi. I saved them as jpgs and opened them up in a new document in Illustrator set to 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels. and placed the jpgs. They came in as 240 pixels and I can't figure out why. I went back to PhotoShop and resaved them as pngs, same thing. I tried saving as tiffs, same thing.
Why is an image in PhotoShop set to 1000 pixels by 1000 pixel at 300 dpi not the same in Illustrator in a new document opened to 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels. I didn't find any help googling my situation. It doesn't make any sense to me. They are the same size. Why does Illustrator shrink them?

    Gina,
1000 pixels at 300 PPI is actually only 3 1/3 inch or 240 pixels, and that is what Illy gives you.
To her, pixel is a unit identical to a point and equalling 1/72 inch.
But you may scale to whichever size you like (in this case by a factor 1000/240, you may divide by 0.24 in the Transform palette or scale by 10000/24%).
The total size of the image will remain unchanged (no resampling).
When you scale to 1000 pixels, the resolution will be 17.28 PPI, rather low.
So maybe you need to start out larger.

  • Huge InDesign file jams printer...suggestion on optimizing??

Our company produces a tabloid newsletter via InDesign that contains may photos making the final file over 11MB. (Pictures are saved then placed as JPG). We print this in house for distribution to staff. The problem is that the file is so large that it took 23 hours to print 50 copies! Our goal is to minimize the file size to speed print time but without losing the sharp resolution in the photos. Any help would be appreciated. (We have tried to export to PDF high quality print, but the colors in the document change significantly when this is done.) Thanks in advance.

    Change your Flattener settings perhaps?
To be honest, this is going to come down to what printer you have, whether it has a certified Adobe Postscript RIP, how much RAM, etc as well.
We have Xerox 5500's and a Xerox 7760 and a KM C450 with Fiery and regularly print files in the 50-100mb range without issue.
Worst case, there is a hack we've used successfully in the past for postscript clone printers that basically makes ID turn the page as much of the page into a bitmap as it can before sending it to the printer. Go to Edit->Transparency Flattener Presets and make a new flattener called Bitmap. Slide the Raster/Vector slider all the way to Raster (0) and set the DPI to be the same as your printer (probably 300 or maybe max of 600).
Then when you print, choose that under Advanced->Flattener.

  • How do export a double page spread photo to epub and fill an ipad screen?

I'm completely new to indesign. I'm using XP and Indesign CS6.  I'm testing my epub on the new IPad 3.
I've published numerous books in print form with major publishing house in the US.  I need to quickly get a copy of the book in epub format for publication on the ipads. Maybe later for the nook, etc. Eventually I will want to design new ebooks from scratch.
We are scanning the book spreads [photos and text together a double page spread] and want to show those spreads on the ipad as a single horizontal image with no page gutter.  We've placed those jpg spreads in indesign as a double page spread. When we publish to epub it does not show as a double page spread.  It only shows up as a horizontal image on either the left or right side of a vertical book [gutter layout] view on the ipad. It never spreads out to fill the entire ipad screen.  What simple thing are we missing?
    Thanks so much
    Dwight

"The" iPad does not exist as a target, so I'm assuming you mean you export to a regular ePub and are viewing it using iBooks.
iBooks is page-agnostic. ePubs do not support the notion of "left-right" pages. In fact, iBooks is the only ePub viewer I am aware of that even tries to show "two" pages at a time.
Re-design your document so each image appears on its own page.
