Placing a map in Indesign; do I use .eps or .ai?

As a cartographer I used to work with FreeHand. Now that I have started drawing my maps in Illustrator (CS4), I still have some beginner-questions.
I make a map as .ai file, and this map I want to place in Indesign (CS4). With FreeHand, I used to place an eps in Indesign, but now I can simply save the .ai as an .ai file that is compatible with pdf. Or, I can make an .eps file of the map first.
Which one do I place in Indesign, the "pdf-" .ai, or the .eps?
What are the differences?
Is there a best way to do it?
Thanks,
jk

JET:
Thanks, your comment is helpful. Now I know I am on the right track. I already choose the option of PDF-compitable file instead of EPS.
Now another issue: when I save  the AI file, there is also the question if I want to turn on the option "compressie gebruiken" ("use compression").
I always turn on this option, but I am not sure this will do any harm to the file?
greetings,
JK

  • INDESIGN GLITCH: Creating an XML file from Indesign Layout - Issue "Using more than one line of GREP" & "Map Styles to Tags"

I currently create XML from InDesign CC by Mapping Style to Tags.
    - The Paragraph Styles are manually apply to text. These styles include multiple lines of GREP to automatically apply character styles.
    - I map some of the paragraph and character styles to prebuilt tags that have the same name "Map Styles to Tags".
I have found through trouble-shooting that InDesign is unable to "Map Styles to Tags" for more than one line of GREP. I therefore have to chose which line of GREP to automatically tag and which lines to manually tag.
Please can anyone help, I need to automatically map tags to at least two character styles in one paragraph via GREP.
    Thanks,

OK. The best I can suggest is running a Find/Change like this:
Which will actually apply the character style to the italics (and I would do the bold as well just to make certain). Then run the Map Styles to Tags again, using the Apply by Name. Which will tag the italics.
I don't know why ID can map to the bold and not the italic character style. It either should do them both (as in this instance) or none at all as the character styles are not actually applied by the grep, just the styling from the character styles.

  • When placing a png in indesign the png changes/loses its orginal color.

When placing a png in indesign the png changes/loses its original color. Ex. the very clear blue that I am using turns dark and "dirty". ( my RGB is : 5,125, 255  -  when I type this I get a " out of gamut warning" a little yellow icon. When I click on it indesign automatically changes the RGB into: 67, 117, 187)
I have worked with indesign for 6 years and never experienced this before. I am guessing it has something to due with that the png is in RGB and indesign in cmyk, but I have no idea what to do about it?

Out of Gamut means the color cannot be printed in your current workspaces using CMYK inks. You would see a preview of the converted color if you move into Overprint Preview, use Proof Colors, or there is transparency and the blend space is set to CMYK.
If this is destined for screen use, then the color doesn't matter, but you should be sure the blend space is set to RGB.

  • When importing from a Word document placing the text in InDesign

When importing from a Word document placing the text in InDesign I can only see the text from the first page of the Word document. I have increased the number of pages in the Indesign document to more than what is in the Word document, still only text from the first page is shown. What am I doing wrong or did I not set a setting correctly?

When you want to auto flow text while placing, hold down the Shift key when clicking with the Place cursor on the first page. New pages will be generated and text will be auto flowed using the margins set up on the master page.

  • Unclear if Illustrator or InDesign should be used - advice needed

    Hi,
I've been using Illustrator for 10+ years to design my companies brochures, logos, business cards, forms, advertisements, instruction manuals, etc.  LOTS of stuff.  Lately it's been bothering me that I have so much duplicated content spread across many .ai files, for example let's say we have 20 different usual manuals.  Currently they are all saved as .ai files and if I want to change an element that is present in ALL the files I need to edit each one.  This is not a smart way to work, I know this.  I have tested "placing" ai files but that has created some problems as well.
I'm wondering if InDesign is what I should be using for creating and managing assets like this?  Rather than download and install the trial and learn the basics, I thought I would first ask what the community thinks.
To ask my question in a simpler way: Which is more appropriate for designing instruction and user manuals, InDesign or Illustrator?
Thank you for any guidance you can offer.
    -Steve

I'm assuming that InDesign will also support some sort of "linked" workflow where I can "place" or "include" an ai file in 20 different InDesign files and if I update the AI file I will see the changes in all the InDesign files.  In other words it will reload or pull in the changes automatically when it loads.
Everyone has told you that it will do this - but they all are referring to logos, not actual text content. I think that you intend to do the updates to text content this way, as well. It'll work, of course, but the efficacy is going to depend on your ability to keep track of which .ai files contain the "master content." There are other ways to do this that are more ID-centric, like storing your content in a database that spits out XML, which you then flow into your ID document.
That will take a lot longer to set up & understand, and it might not pay off for you to do all that work, since you already have all of your content in Illy.  However, I think it's best to know what the best methods are, so you can know exactly what you're losing out on by using a less flexible method. I work in a translation firm, and whenever I get an InDesign doc that just has text-laden .ai files placed therein, I always bill high. It's about 3x as much work to localize an Illustrator file, when compared to an identical layout in InDesign.
So, if I was asked by your organization to make a plan for you as a workflow consultant, I'd tell you to go through with your plan of using Illustrator content placed in ID, with instructions to get used to the tools in ID so that a nice, slow, easy migration of text content out of Illustrator could take place at some point in the future.
(Lastly, look at the Preferences in InDesign; under "File Handling" there are some options like "Check links before opening document" and "Find missing links before opening document." Those prefs will be very important for your workflow...)

  • Is there any need for an InDesign user to use InCopy as well?

We are looking to do a software refresh from CS3 to CS5, and when auditing users we discoverd a handful of people that are using InDesign and InCopy.  My previous thoughts about InCopy, was that the program isn't needed if you have InDesign, but users have given the following reasons for using both.  Can someone tell me if these reasons are founded, or if there is a way to do these things in InDesign only?
Example 1:  InDesign: Use to edit pages before going to press, cut copy to fit, re-write headlines and insert captions.  InCopy:  Use daily to perform first reads and content edits of stories submitted by writers and to write my own copy, and to format stories before sending them to the copy editor for final editing.
Example 2:  InCopy CS2 I use in conjunction w/InDesign when we create an issue.
Example 3:   I use Adobe Incopy CS2 several times per week to format and file stories with our copydesk. I also use Adobe InDesign CS3 to make cuts and late edits on page each week before my section ships to the printer.
Example 4:  Use both daily for printed materials
Input is greatly appreciated!  Thank you

Thank you John, for one user it appears he is doing to copy editing as well as the design.  He is using InCopy to format tex files before they are imported in InDesign.  Can you tell me if InDesign can be used as a word-processing software?
Here are exaples of a few of the other workflows: When I send stories to our copy chief, they have to be in an InCopy template for him to format the fonts. FM's two reporters send stories to me in Word, and I edit them before putting them in an InCopy template and sending them proofread. They then do an initial proofread for house style before formatting them and sending them to our art department for page layout in InDesign.
After the pages are laid out by our art director, I use InDesign in order to cut stories to fit, proofread and edit and write captions on page. Years ago, we had an additional copy editor to help our copy chief with this stage of the process, but he got laid off. They gave me and one other editor copies of InDesign at that point, so that we could distribute his work on shipping days. Since we're a weekly, I currently use both of these programs extensively every week.
It appears these users are wearing multiple hats, I was just under the impression that InDesign could do anything that InCopy does (and more ofcourse).  Apparently I was incorrect?

  • How to create interactive map in SAP Visual Business using SAP UI5 SDK

    Hi,
    Please tell me,
How to create interactive map in SAP Visual Business using SAP UI5 SDK.
Is it possible to create interactive map using VB Control in SAP UI5 SDK..?
if possible please any one let me know.

    Hi folks, one question:
We have our development close moved and now it is earlier than originally planned.
That means that we maybe can't finish our convenient API and you have to wait till we will release it - early 2015 is planned.
    But there is another option:
Currently we have a API based on json. The developer has to create json and  to transfer it to the Visual Business control.
This interface is more used as a low level API and we are developing on top the more convenient one. So all the features are the same.
It will stay stable & compatible in the future and you can build on it.
Do you want to use this interface?
Then I will publish the documentation.
    Let me know.
    Thanks

  • Crop mark issue when placing and PDF in Indesign

I've just had this strange issue that I can't figure out and I'm not sure if anyone else has had it as well.
I exported a PDF through InDesign with crop marks. I then placed the PDF in Indesign  and for some reason the bleed and the crop marks don't
show up! I've never had this issue with Indesign before.
Is it even InDesign, or is it the PDF itself?

Select show options when placing and select the appropriate crop to choice.

  • Placing a PDF in InDesign

Ok. I don't know how else to simplify my explanation so here goes…
    1. So, I have a PDF article which is 8.5" x 11". It mainly contains text.
    2. I want to place this one page PDF in InDesign but it keeps taking out the white space around the text. Meaning it only takes the area that has text on it so it actually comes out as smaller than 8.5" x 11".
    3. How do I maintain the PDF size when importing into InDesign.
Here's how I want it to look (notice the white space around the text:
BUT this is how it shows up when placed in InDesign (notice how the white margin disappeared):

Well, first of all, I'm not the best at finding the right/proper keywords
when it comes to searching. I searched "place PDF" and got me to the first
topic you mentioned. I have no patience in going through and reading
through all the list of results. That's why I like going through FORUM. I
know I'll get my answer there somehow and in the meantime while waiting
for someone to respond I am productive with other jobs. That's all.
Also, I do see that at the bottom is the "Related Information" (I have
CS3). But I don't think I would necessarily go to "Import options for
graphics" link to get my answer in PDF. But that's just me.

  • Back-saving Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

I am currently running Adobe CS3 on a Macintosh computer / OS. Is it possible to back-save Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

@kc.k – You will need InDesign CS4 for that.
CS4 is the only version, that can export/import both IDML and INX exchange formats.
And you need an exported INX file (from InDesign CS4) that can open your exported IDML file from CS6, CC or CC-2014.
Since you are still running CS3 I'd suggest you downloading a 30days version of CS4 and do the conversion:
Download Adobe CS4 and CS3 Free Trials Here (incl. After Effects) | ProDesignTools
Read the Note about downloading very well before trying !!
