Placing a PDF in InDesign CS5

Hello,
I am new to these forums and new to forums as a whole. I have a question about InDesign CS5. I recently upgraded from CS3 to CS5. In InDesign CS3 when I placed a PDF file (or other Adobe file for that matter) once I selected a crop option if I then placed another PDF (or other Adobe file) the Place command remembered my last crop selection and made that the first option. I find that when I place PDFs now in CS5 that I have to select my crop option every time. The default seems to be Bounding Box (visible layers only), and no matter how many times I select another crop option, say media, and then place the item, I always have to reselect the crop option to media when I again place another PDF. Is there and option for changing this default? Or is there a way of turning on a option that will cause InDesign CS5 to remember my last crop selection under the Place command? If so, how do I do it? It would save my lots of time if I could figure this out.
Thank you.

Welcome to the forum Charles, I hope your first experience is a positive one.
I've had exactly this problem, which was solved in a forum on Indesign Secrets, another great Indesign resource.  The thread is here, but let me know if you have any problems implementing the scripts in it.  I've adapted them and made my own list so for example I can easily just click on one to place page 7 of a PDF to it's trim box, which not only means you don't have to have "show options" ticked when placing but if you drag and drop (which is often a lot quicker) you get what you want to.
Thank you Stix, for the welcome and the information as well.
I believe I have a working understanding of how to edit and place scripts in InDesign. (Now that is scary!) Now I have a new challenge; related to my original challenge. The PDFs that I am placing are not just single page PDFs; some of them can be 50 - 100 pages. That being said, one of my favorite things to do is to take a existing InDesign file, where I have already placed and sized the PDFs, rename it and then go in and select the previously placed PDF and replace it with page xxx; all throughout the document. Perhaps I am doing something wrong with the script information because I do not see away for me to choose the page I want without using the "show import options*. Using this option of course kicks out the script I have selected; does it not? Is there a option in one of example scripts that would help me with this?

  • Failed to open PDF file when placing a PDF in Indesign CS5

I am also having an issue when I am able to place the PDF that the bleed isn't showing up and the crops aren't either

The failure dialog usually means the import options are set to crop to one of the options that isn't defined for that particular file, and changing the crop options to one that isn't grayed out should work. To show bleed and marks, first they must be present in the PDF, and second your choice of crop option must be large enough to include them. Media would be my choice for that.

  • PDF of InDesign CS5.5 has text drift in a table

In InDesign CS5.5 I have a large table (36 rows, 17 columns). The content is prices, right-aligned, two decimal places.
When I export as a PDF, the numbers slowly shift, moving top to bottom, either to the left or right (this happens on many (but not all) different pages), for 20-25 rows, at which point the positioning is corrected. Total deviation from row 1 until the correction varies, from 0.0067 inches to 0.0109 inches.
This happens only when exporting a PDF from InDesign (CS5.5). If I print from the .indd the problem is not there. If I print a .ps and use Distiller, the resulting PDF is fine.
All cells have the same settings as far as padding, tabs, type size.
I'll post this in the InDesign forums as well.

Steve, I don't seem to be able to move this back -- missing some privileges I think. This was a cross-post -- already in the ID forum -- and he was hoping maybe someone in Acrobat had more ideas. Can you move it back again?

  • Why does black turn grey when creating a pdf from InDesign CS5??

Why do blacks turn to grey when I create/export a pdf from InDesign CS5?

Unfortunately, things like this are rarely glitchy little programming errors but deep, by-design, problems with using colour management. Usually you are getting exactly what you asked for, just not what you want, and the more colour management options there are, the more likely this is.
There are many possible causes, but one of the easiest to do is and hardest to spot is applying a CMYK profile in InDesign export, and a different one through Photoshop settings. This is actually demanding that colours be converted for the worst! Since your print workflow will be different, a work-around of rich black is likely to make things worse.
So the first thing to check is whether the colours you indended made it to the PDF, indeed. Output Preview is the first tool to use (as well as inspecting plates, you can hover over points to check the colour mix).
Also, go to your PDF export under the "Output" tab which includes colour and PDF/X. Either send a screen shot, or read off all of the the settings there.

  • Crop mark issue when placing and PDF in Indesign

I've just had this strange issue that I can't figure out and I'm not sure if anyone else has had it as well.
I exported a PDF through InDesign with crop marks. I then placed the PDF in Indesign  and for some reason the bleed and the crop marks don't
show up! I've never had this issue with Indesign before.
Is it even InDesign, or is it the PDF itself?

Select show options when placing and select the appropriate crop to choice.

  • Placing a PDF in InDesign

Ok. I don't know how else to simplify my explanation so here goes…
    1. So, I have a PDF article which is 8.5" x 11". It mainly contains text.
    2. I want to place this one page PDF in InDesign but it keeps taking out the white space around the text. Meaning it only takes the area that has text on it so it actually comes out as smaller than 8.5" x 11".
    3. How do I maintain the PDF size when importing into InDesign.
Here's how I want it to look (notice the white space around the text:
BUT this is how it shows up when placed in InDesign (notice how the white margin disappeared):

Well, first of all, I'm not the best at finding the right/proper keywords
when it comes to searching. I searched "place PDF" and got me to the first
topic you mentioned. I have no patience in going through and reading
through all the list of results. That's why I like going through FORUM. I
know I'll get my answer there somehow and in the meantime while waiting
for someone to respond I am productive with other jobs. That's all.
Also, I do see that at the bottom is the "Related Information" (I have
CS3). But I don't think I would necessarily go to "Import options for
graphics" link to get my answer in PDF. But that's just me.

  • Exporting PDF problem indesign CS5

    Hello,
I'm trying to export a 72 pages document to pdf in indesign CS5 but during the exporting proces the pdf file disappeares. Who knows a solution to this problem. Thanks in advance for helping me.
    with creative greets,
    Robert Bastiaenen

what I did was saving the indd file. After that I wanted to export the HR-pdf document so I started the export and after 15 minutes teh file disappeares when it wasn't finished with saving. When i tried to save it as the smallest file size possible there was no problem and the file was exported correctly. So I allready found out that the problem can be found in de export to HD_PDF.

  • When making a PDF in Indesign CS5 crashes?

Is there any way to reset the PDFs Presets in Indesign. The High Quality PDF (that is a preset already in Indesign) started to crash ages ago. I just made up new PDF Presets. Now it seems that when making PDFS whether Press Quality or the ones I have made myself it crashes. I launch Indesign then can make a PDF but then when I open another document it crashes again? Any help greatly appreciated

Please see Adobe Forums: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding for directions to to produce a Hang report, then a forced crash and report, and put both of them on Pastebin.com, not here, and put links to both of them here. We may be able to pin down the problem from the reports.
I'm about to quit for the day, so either someone else will help you, or I'll pick up again in the morning.

  • Creating a Template for PDFs in InDesign CS5.5

    Hello.
I'm trying to make a template for imposing PDF documents in InDesign CS5.5. The template needs to have trim marks and needs to fit 4 A5 pages on it. The page size needs to be 450mm x 320mm (SRA3) and should have guidelines (which I can't move by an exact amount) to help with positioning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It might be easier to invest in something like Quite Imposing, an impostion plugin for Acrobat. It's far less expensive than a full-blown professional imposition program and if you need to impose a lot of PDFs, it will pay for itself quickly.

  • Help with importing PDF to Indesign CS5 trial version

Hello: I am in a bit of a quandry. I have numerous PDF's that I want to convert to Epub. I called Adobe and asked them what program I would need to do this and they said InDesign CS5 so I downloaded the trial version to check it out. The problem is, that in the trial version there is no "place" command, which is how I would import the PDF. So I am left unable to run a test with this software and don't want to buy a program that I can't confirm. Any ideas or work arounds would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
    Krista

The trial version of InDesign certainly does not have any features disabled. You should be able to place pages from a PDF file into an InDesign document.
File=>Place or Ctrl-D should yield a file dialog for you to select a file to place. Of course, you must already have opened an existing file or created a new file.

  • Problems copy & paste text from PDF to InDesign CS5

    Hey guys
Today, I tried copying and pasting text from a PDF I received from my client, into a InDesign CS5 doc, and the text came out was just random numbers and punctuations.
I've tried exporting Word / RTF & TXT file from the PDF and yet they still come out random. I'm not sure if it's just how the PDF was made, or there is something wrong with my CS5.
I'm on Snow Leopard, CS5 Premium, Acrobat Pro 9 & also Acrobat Reader X.
    Any ideas why?

    It's the PDF.
Usually, you can copy text out of a PDF, but there is no guarantee *at all*. Older software used to take shortcuts to subset fonts: first character it encountered got coded as #1, the next as #2, etc. etc. If you do a search & replace of each of the nonsense characters, you'll slowly see the original text appearing (thst's not as simple as it sounds, though).
A similar "problem" is that sometimes spaces don't get copied (there is no need for a "Space Character" in a PDF), and that you cannot copy contiguous lines of text as a single paragraph. All of it is because a PDF is not intended nor designed to be re-used after creation.
If you really need this text and don't want to type it in, try to get hold of the original file.

  • Exporting to .pdf from InDesign CS5

Probably a real simple question to answer, but I'm stumped.  I'm trying to export a 6 page newsletter to a .pdf format from InDesign CS5; it comes out as a 4 page document with the following orientation:  The first page is fine (vertical on letter size), the 2nd & 3rd pages show up side by side (horz./letter) as does pages 4 & 5.  The 6th page again is fine (vertical/letter).  I never had this issue with CS4...  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance,   Wharton

    Hi Tom,
I looked up the Spreads option in InDesign help to see what you were referring to...   I see most of the options described, but the Spreads option doesn't appear to available in the "Export to Interactive PDF" pop-up box.
The options I've chosen are:  Pages-All; View after Exporting; Embed Page Thumbnails; View-Default; Layout/Single Page; Presentation-Open in full screen Mode; Page transitions-None; Buttons and Media-Include all...  I don't believe that the Image Handling section would be the issue, but I chose, JPEG (Lossy), Maximum quality and a resolution of 300.
    Thanks

  • Large PDFs from Indesign CS5 under Lion

Has anyone noctived the incredibly large PDFs exported from Indesign CS5 under OS X 10.7 Lion?...
When OS X 10. Snow Leopard all was great, though now I have noticed HUGE differences!!??
crazy. example Indesign exported to pdf 106mb
Print to file, then Distiller: 32mb
    BIG DIFFERENCE
    anyone else?
    thanks

Ok lets forget the Distiller part of this story, sorry.
My issue is that under Lion PDF's are WAY larger than in previous OS X (Snow Leopard etc)
I don't have any Mac on Snow Leopard to now show a comparison only previous PDF's made before Lion was installed and they are signifcantly smaller.
I just tested I think it is new documents made in Indesign CS5 in Lion.
Testing a indd file previously made in Snow Leopard I exported a PDF it produced the same size PDF as in Snow Leopard, so now I am confused slightly hoping I am wrong. Then I exported that same .indd as a .idml opened and saved as .indd then exported as a PDF it is 150kb larger... small difference yes, though  ot enough to worry about, so I tried with previous larger files... only to have them create the satisfactory sized pdf.
Ok, I am wondering if newly created documents are the issue?...
Moving on I found then I found this..  http://www.creativepro.com/article/drop-20-pounds-indesign
I have just done a space audit most of the file is the images, my only conclusion is that the images are containing meta data that is hogging?...

  • Interactive pdf using Indesign CS5.5 problem with layering

    Hi all
I have designed an interactive pdf - not for the web. I have a problem layering out a page. On the page there are 6 buttons. Each button when pressed will bring forward a box containing content/information. When I designed the page using indesign cs5.5 I made sure the largest box of information was at the top of the layer. I thought this would be the cleanest way to present the page. By having the largest content box (each of the six content boxes are different sizes) at the top it would cover the other boxes. When I exported the file out the smallest box was at the top, then the secondest etc. It looks pretty messy.
Is there a way to ensure that the lagest content box is at the top when it exported to pdf????
    Regards

    Have patience!
Have you tried putting that largest box on it's own layer at the top?  I don't know much about buttons etc though, if you wait someone will come on here that does.  A lot of contributors are in different time zones though.....
