Placing a photo

I'm attempting to "place" a .jpeg file saved from Photoshop Elements 11 in an InDesign CS 5.5 document and it doesn't appear. Is there a compatibility issue between the newer Photoshop Elements and the older InDesign program?

Photoshop Elements, InDesign and Microsoft Office are in no way connected!
You, not to sound insulting, have a very basic understanding of how programs interact.
Do not take that the wrong way. I too was like this but after years of study I have learned. And if I can learn so can anyone else.
But if you have InDesign - are you on InDesign CC?
If you are you can download the full Photoshop - save the JPEG there and place that to InDesign.

  • Placing a photo over a video clip

Is there a way to place a photo so it "replaces" the video temporarily but still allows the audio to "play through" and to stay in sinc with the video? ie: someoen is talking about florida and a map of florida comes up without interupting the audio/video sinc.

    You could try this
First extract audio from your clip.
Now select the still and determine its display time.
Next identify the point in the movie clip where you want to start the still and split the clip at that point.
Now identify the point in the movie clip where you want to the still to end and split the clip again at that point. The original clip is now in three sections, check the middle section is exactly the same length as the still (you can adjust the length of the still by double clicking on it)
Finally delete the middle, unwanted, part of the clip and replace it with the still. Hopefully you will find that the sound is still exactly in sync in the last part.
This is not as complicated as it may seem.
One effect you might like to try is to create a still from a frame of your movie and use the technique to hold on a shot while the sound moves on and pick up the action later.
Let us know how you get on.

  • InDesign Automation - Placing yearbook photos & text

    Hi,
I'm new to InDeisgn and am currently working on a project that requires me to change out an InDesign CS3 file of a yearbook page to the most current students and their names.
What is the best way to switch out the old photos with the new ones, in the correct order (alphabetical), and change the names under each photo?
Any way to automate this without scripting?  I know the hard way would be to go in and replace each photo manually and change each text manually, but there are a lot of photos.  There has to be an easier way.
I've attached a thumb of the layout for reference (blurred for obvious reasons)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Jeff

How about just setting up a grid based on the current page, and use the indesign contact sheet built in thing that it does?
Not really automatic, you have to do each page manually.
I thought of Data Merge, but then linking all the names with the path then doing the merge. I guess it would be faster, if not a hassle to setup at first. And that Spreadsheet would need to be updated everyyear.
So perhaps a naming convention would suit better.
Name the photos Year_1_Alphaname, Year_2_Alphaname etc. or something and then those pictures are named the same every year.
Either way, it will be a sort of manual setup this year until you get a workflow that you can use year in year out (pun completely intended).
Back in the day it was a 2 man job for months of work, scanning, naming, laying out images and text. Sigh. The hard days are being replaced by computers and machines. Even yearbooks need to be turned around in a few weeks rather than a few months.

  • Placing a "photo caption" in a object style CS4

I having trouble making a photo caption on a object style that I have built.
I work in the print industry and we deal a lot with ag equipment and sales. We build magazines and brochures and like to keep them very consistent so we have a build an object box that we use for all our photo frames. We have also built a paragraph style that we use for the equipment description (photo caption) that goes on top of the picture. This is a tedious task since we have to line up every photo caption right on the inside edge of the pictures stroke. Sometimes we don't line it up right if we are in a hurry the photo caption is off the edge and exposing some of the picture or off the edge into the white space.
I wanted to make it so every object style was consistent and that every photo caption was correct so I experimented with the object style options. I found that I can use a paragraph style and set it up perfectly:
But then when I place an image into my object box, my paragraph style is cancelled. I cannot figure out where to go from here. Does someone know how to get this sort of object style with paragraphy style to work?

A frame can contain an image or it can contain text, but not both at the same time. You need two frames (or a bit of trickery -- Dave saunders wrote a script a few years ago that would take a caption and seemingly put it into the same frame, but it was really grouping two frames and putting them both into yet a third one, if I remember rightly).
Are all the images and all the captions the same sizes? If so, you could use a snippet or a library to store a paired image and caption frame with all the styling attached and the positions set.

  • Placing More Than One Photo On A Page

Can you add in the scrapbook format more than one photo per page?
I have a friend who wants me to create a DVD for him with over 500 photos, and the only way I can cheat it is by placing two photos together in Photoshop, then putting the large JPG in the stage. It looks pretty hokey, though.
So, I am wondering if there is a setting where you can get two places to insert a photo on to a page, rather than the standard one that they give you.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Gail,
Without using 3rd party plug-ins, this feature is not available in iMovie HD. However, using the built-in effect N-Square (under Editing - Video FX), it's possible to have multiple copies of the same photo on screen - this varies from a minimum of 4 up to a maximum of 64. You could then add titles (text) as desired, using one of the supplied titles. However, this works with only the one photo - not with several different photos on screen at the same time, which is my understanding of what you want to do.
For 3rd party plug-ins, try the Slick Volumes available from GeeThree here:
    http://www.geethree.com/slick/
Another way to create the effect you are looking for is to use an application like Keynote. Here you can create slides containing various photos and text on a range of backgrounds. These can be exported, then imported to iMovie. Let me know if you need help with this option.

  • I created a slide show on work computer. Placed photos and movies in Media Browser. Want to use another computer (laptop) to give presentation. Do I need to copy media browser to laptop or are pictures and movies embedded in slide show and can go anywhere

I created a slide show on my work computer and placed many photos and movies in my work computer's Media Browser. Want to use another computer (laptop) to give the presentation and therefore change location of slide show. Do I need to copy the media browser to the laptop or once the pictures and movies are embedded in the original slide show, can I take it anywhere and not worry about the media browser?
I also want to optimize a movie for Keynote, so it's not too large a file. Please help.

Graphic, sound and video files are copied into the Keynote file, but make sure Keynote > Preferences - include sound and movies check box is ticked.
If you have added additional fonts they will need be changed to reflect what is on the destination machine.
If the other machine has a different Keynote version, ensure the same transitions and effects are available.

  • IPhoto 11 photo book save placed photos

I made a photobook for my client.  She likes it.
I took over 150 photos and used 48 photos for the book.
In the photobook screen, the photos I placed in the book are check marked.
The ones not used are clear.
Is it possible to extract only those placed 48 photos and put them in a separate album?
I am trying to avoide going through all 150 photos and try to find the 48 used ones.
Is there a simple highlight, drag and drop kind of procedure?
    Thank you.

There is a way.  If you don't have any other photos flagged in the library you can go thru the pages and flag each photo in the book. To flag the photos you need to get into the edit mode and then use the Photos ➙ Flag Photo menu option.  The next photo in the book can be brought into the edit mode by using the forwared arrow on the keyboard. Create a smart album with the criteria Photo is Flagged and you'll have all of the book photos grouped in that smart album.
Or you can use ratings which is easier as you don't need to go into the Edit mode.  Click on each photo on a page and use the Photos ➙ My Ration menu option to assigna a specific rating to the photos in the book:
If your library has photos other than that apply to your client you might want to consider this tutorial for this book, iP12 - Archiving an iPhoto 9 (11) Book for Editing and/or Ordering at a Later Date, for this book and using a separate library for future books.

  • Adjusting a photo that has been placed / place

Hi, I "placed" a photo into a template I'm working with. I no longer have the photo on my hard drive. Is there a way to make adjustments to a photo / resize it that has been "placed" into a dropzone? I'm working with a PSD file still.

    What version of Photoshop?
If it's a Smart Object, just open it and edit.
Or use Free Transform to change the size/shape.

  • Placing photos for crisp final results

I'm having difficulty placing a photo at the highest quality level for a printed piece. I have a "lo-res" PNG file at 72 dpi (about 2 MB) that actually looks better in InDesign than a "hi-res" TIF at 300 dpi and some 14 MB in size. The TIF comes in very small on my screen and requires scaling up to take up the required space even though its actual size is about 2000 px wide.
I know I'm missing something. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Orson

PNG is not a print format, it's RGB and 24 Bit, not suitable for a print format.
    TIff would be better.
If it's 2000 px wide then divide that by 72 (because you have 72 ppi image) that means it's 27 inches wide as it is.
Take that and make it 300 ppi
That means it's 6.4 inches wide at 300 ppi
    (72/300)*27 = 6.48 inches
So that's your print size at 300 ppi.
Get rid of the PNGs and go to Tiff
When you place the image in InDesign you can go to Window>Info
When you select the image you will see two values
    Actual PPI and Effective PPI
The Actual shows you what size it is currently - which should be 72 in your case
The effective PPI shows you the amount of pixels per inch at the current scale.
The larger you make an image basically spaces the pixels out further, so you have less pixels per inch.
The smaller you make the image the more you push them together and the more pixels there are per inch.

  • Problem with photos' colors

    Hi,
I have a problem with colors of photos which I'm using in a. InDesign document.
I've created a 20 page catalog, with first and last pages for the front and back of the cover. I placed one photo on the first page and second on the last page. When I opened them earlier on in Photoshop they were matching perfectly, so I figured that it will be the same in InDesign. When I placed them in Indesign it turned out that the photo on the first page has a different color saturation (lower) than the one on the last page. It looks as if the first page was converted to CMYK and the last page was still in RGB mode (the photos were initially in RGB).
I decided to change the color preferences of the photos in photoshop to CMYK and saved thm again for InDesign, but it didn't help (I also checked all of the doc and color preferences in InDesign and all looked fine). It seems that colors are different on the last page only. Is it possible that it has a different color preferences set up? I'm a new InDesign user and I would be gratefull for You help :-)

It sounds like you have transparency of some sort (effects, drop shadow, tranparent image?) on the front and not on the back, and that the transparency blend space is set to CMYK instead of RGB while your image is RGB.
Edit > Transparency Blend Space > Document RGB

  • How do I place a photo in Illustrator from my iPhoto Library?

I am a graphic designer and I use Illustrator and Photoshop a lot. I don't use iPhoto for most of my photo editing but rather for the organizing it does with my photos in regard to me viewing them.
Since updating to iPhoto 08 the other day I am unable to get into my photos folder and place a photo in Illustrator or open a photo from Photoshop. (I have now figured out how to use Photoshop to edit...so that is not my real issue) Because of this new design to keep people out of the folder so they don't corrupt them, it also seems to keep me out from even placing a photo.
Other than physically making a copy of it and placing it into another folder how can I access these photos? I have tried dragging and dropping the photo from iPhoto to my Illustrator page, I get this message +"QuickTime™ and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture."+
I can do a work around for Photoshop but what about Illustrator? Why can I not just place my photo?
I am sorry if this question is redundant to others being asked in regards to the "no easy access" to the main iPhoto Library but I didn't see any questions specifically asking about Illustrator.
    Thanks.

    Two things
1- When you go to Leopard the access is very easy and more direct
2 - for me I love the fact that I do NOT have to worry about having the latest version of the photo like I used to - now I export the photo (at worst - under Leopard I normally directly access the latest version) and know that it is the current version rather than looking at the original folder and the modified folder trying to remember the photo name (which makes exporting, using and deleting my preferred work flow under Tiger)

  • Iphoto - key photo won't set for an event on my iPad

I have placed my photos into "Events".  I have assigned a "key photo" to my events.  For some reason some key photos will show up as the key photo in iPhoto but when I sync with iTunes the key photo isn't the one I assigned or want on my iPad.  First I rebooted my Mac and my iPad and I even changed almost all the key photos successfully but a select few refuse to change on my iPad after being synced.
