Placing an analog cam-film into an EXTERNAL Hard drive.

Thank you for the advice.  It solved my problem.
Now I have two more questions:
1.  With a previous device I used for uploading an analog cam-film onto iMovies, I was asked to state what drive I wanted it placed in, as My iMac is hooked up to two external hard drives.  Elgato will not allow me to do this, as far as I can see.  Is there a solution, without having to move the movie from the internal HD to the external one?
2.  I was once told that to complete the creation of the PROJECT from the EVENT, there was a further step, which would place a flay on the right-hand top corner of the project.  Could you elucidate please?

I am not sure which ElGato product you are using, but if you have the EyeTV 3 software, you can set the target drive in preferences.
EyeTV/Preferences.../Recording
then change EyeTV Archive Location

  • Can I drag and drop entire hard drive into and external hard drive?

I want to back up my MacBook Pro before I send it in for optical drive replacement. However, the Time Machine back up app wants me to erase my external drive and reformat before it can back up my files. I already have information from other computers on the external drive, so erasing and restoring is out of the question.
Can I just drag and drop my hard drives (Macintosh HD and BOOTCAMP) into the external hard drive?
    Will that transfer everything?
As a side note, can anyone tell me why Time Machine doesn't work with the external drive? My dad has files on it from his Mac and I have a couple movies saved on it from this one. Is it possible to maybe partition the external drive to accommodate both and reformat only one partition without losing the other saved files?

    Hi
+"So does reformatting make the external hard drive only usable by Macs/Time Machine?"+
Not really. If the external drive is formatted as FAT32 you can read/write to that drive from any Mac as well as any PC. If the external drive is formatted as NTFS you can only read from it but you can read/write from any PC. You can write to an NTFS formatted volume if you use a 3rd-Party Utility such as MacFuse. If the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended you can read/write to it from any Mac. Unless you install a 3rd-Party Utility (I don't know of any offhand) you won't be able to read/write to it from any PC. PCs don't know what a Mac OS Extended format is.
As already mentioned TimeMachine will not work with any other format other than Mac OS Extended.
+"Will I be able to use the same external hard drive to back up multiple Mac computers with Time Machine?"+
Yes but only if that external drive has been formatted as Mac OS Extended. If there is existing data on that drive that you don't want to lose back it up first.
+"Will I still be able to drag and drop movies into the external hard drive for basic storage?"+
If you leave the external drive exactly as it is - ie no formatting - and you have already drag/dropped files to it from your mac or any other mac then you will be able to continue to do this.

  • Can I take my old mac and make it into an external hard drive

Can I take my old mac and make it into an external hard drive? It does not work anymore but I would like to make it into an external hard drive. I heard it is not to hard to do myself but I have important information I would like off of it and only really trust the apple store to do it. I know it is possible because I have had a friend that had it done after water went on her laptop. I would like to also know how much is this going to cost and if it is even worth getting done at the store or just do it myself.

Can it boot to Target Disk Mode
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
Otherwise just take the HD out and put it in an external enclosure.

  • Successfully imported pictures from camera, backed up on external hard drive but now there is no sign of the pictures on hard drive or Iphoto...PLEASE HELP???

I successfully imported 2 photo shoots from my camera.
Once imported, as always, I saved the photos onto my external hard drive.
Normally I would also keep the images on my camera until I have finished the job and handed the finished product to the customer although on this occasion I had to delete them due to an extensive shoot and the need for space.
Last night I was hoping to start editing the shots so opened up my hard drive to find the 2 folders there but both were empty! I then opened up Iphoto and I can't locate them anywhere. My library only seems to date back to July. Could this mean my Iphoto is full so has not saved the images and they are now lost forever???
I've checked all my trash cans etc to ensure they haven't been accidentally deleted and they haven't.
    Please help?!?!?!
    Many thanks in advance
    Damsel in utter distress! x

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • MacBook hard drive transform into an external hard drive problem

My macbook pro early 2008 just died. The mother circuit fried and well its not usuable anymore and the repair for it are like 900$. Having alot of data in my macbook hard drive , i ask the guy that work at the genius bar to take out of macbook hard drive.
then i install the hard drive in a enclosure kit to transform it into a portable external hard drive. My problem is:
It only read the Window partition info and doesnt even give the choice to view my Mac partition.
i divided my Macbook HD with bootcamp and i divided the window partition to only have 30 G and the rest (280g) to leave it for my Mac exploitation.
The HD cant seen to find my Mac partition and only shows the data i got on my Window partition, i was wondering wat can i do to get my HD to see the data of my MAC partition
Thx in advance for the answers

There are third party programs for Windows to read HFS+, and I won't promise anything, but a Linux LiveCD may work as well. I don't have any names off the top of my head for those third party programs, but google something like "Windows HFS+" and you should be able to come up with a few leads.
But in general, yes, you'll need a Mac to read a Mac partition.

  • How to download iphoto into an external hard drive

    I have a MacBook Air - PowerBook G4 - 15"
    1)  What is the easiest way to download iphotp "PHOTOS" to an external hard drive?
    2)  After it has downloaded, I want to leave the photos still in my computer. Can I do that?
will it just happen to be still on it?
    3)  If I remove photos in iphoto in  PHOTO will they also be removed from the External Hard Drive at the same time?
Thanks for your help. I am timid to do anything until I do this research. My skills are limited at this moment.

drag the "iPhoto Library" to the external drive - by default your iPhoto library is in the pictures folder  --  the only thing you do with the iPhoto application is to "depress the option key and launch iPhoto then use the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive "
    courtesy Larrry
No, unless its time machine, anything do on your Mac is not mirrored in your external HD.
yes, after copied, it will be on your computer to do with as you like.

  • HT1751 when I try to drag my Itunes into my external hard drive, I get the "no way" symbol, circ;e with a line thjrough it. How can I back up? I have lost a fortune in purchased items because I cannot back up despite following the Unhelpful help.

I cannot drag my Itunes folder to my external hard drive, despite following the unhelpful help exactly. I get a "no way" sign Circle with a line though it. I have lost a fortune in purchased goods (audio books)  because I cant do it. Itunes have said they cant reimburse me and they dont have those books anymore, so cannot redownload them for me. Please remind me NEVER to buy apple products again.
I am scared I am going to lose more money seeing I cant BACK ANYTHING UP.

If you used the hard drive with another Mac then it is likely Mac formatted.  It was because you posted in the iTunes for Windows forum (kind of the equivalent to taking a VW to a Ford dealership for service) I thought you might be using a Windows formatted drive.
Thumb drives are not universal.  There isn't a "universal" drive format.  Some work partly with both systems but are not fully compatible.
Click once on the hard drive icon on the desktop.  Fo to File then Get Info.  It will say the drive format.
Frankly I have never had your problem with a drive so I can't help too much except in general experience.  The prohibitory sign is pretty universal and for some reason you are not allowed to copy to that drive.
I think if you had a Windows computer you'd be unhappy with it too and probably be posting on a forum that your machine was virus ridden and crashing and you didn't know anything about registries...  To be honest, I was doing a presentation on a friend's Windows computer and wanted to get it to display a simple image file.  There was no way we could get the .jpg image file to open with anything but Windows Explorer which is a web browser!  I mean, that's really bad, and of course he was so used to using it without knowing anything about computers that he could not help me.  I did my presentation in front of 30 people using Explorer.

  • Converting Time Machine back into an External Hard Drive?

before i got my macbook, i used my 320GB external hard drive on a windows XP-run computer. i transferred all my files to my new mac, before using it as my time machine drive.
it's now incompatible with windows though.
is there any way to either
-allow my drive to be used with a windows XP computer?
    or
-unassociate the drive with time machine, and revert it back to a plain old external hard drive?

In order to use that old drive with Windows XP, I'd repartition it with the MBR option and format it as a Fat32 drive. Once you connect it to the WinXP machine you can also reformat the drive to NTFS for better performance and compatibility with XP.

  • My Mac won't let me put files into my external hard drive

I have a Lenovo USB external hard drive. I want to put files on it, but my Macbook air will not allow it. I am not sure what the problem is. Please help!

Apple has a handy search function on their web page, so you can go to the upper right searchbox on most pages and type in what you need.  Just typing in "format hard drive" gave me this result.

  • Turning my iBook hard drive into a external hard drive

My old 2002 G3 iBook died in January. The best diagnosis is that it was the logic board failure... you know, it started up for awhile while pinching on the left side of the track pad.
Now I have a new MacBook, and would like to use my old hard drive as an external hard drive. Is this possible?
Not knowing too much about logic boards, I wonder if this is something that is part of the hard drive, or not. Obviously, if the logic board is one of the components of the hard drive this would not be possible, but if it's not, is there a place with instructions on removing the old hard drive and mounting it on a sled so I can access it with firewire?
    Thanks a lot!

No, Trevor, the hard drive and logic board are separate entities.
To remove the hard drive check out iFixit's website:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.12.0.html
You would need an enclosure like this one which accommodates a 2.5-inch, 9 mm hard drive.
It should mount easily in such an enclosure. (Be sure not to buy an enclosure that is for an SATA drive. Those are for the newer drives like the one in your MacBook.)
With a Power PC Mac (like the iBook), you needed FireWire if you wanted to boot from it, but with the Intel Macs (like your new MacBook), USB booting is an option (however FireWire will still be faster).
    Good luck.

  • How do I download files from websites directly into my external hard drive without them saving into my internal hard drive?

I am a DJ and I download a lot of music from websites. My internal hard drive's space is almost full which in turn makes my macbook really slow. I bought an external hard drive to download everything onto it instead but it still downloads onto my internal hard drive. Please help me

Assuming you're using Safari, the default download folder is specified in Safari>Preferences>General. Go there and you'll see where Downloads is currently selected. Click on that, select Other, navigate to the directory you want to use and click Select.

  • How Do I Make My Hard Drive Into An External Hard Drive

I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.
I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.
Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?
    Thanks!

You can get adapters that go from FW400 to FW 800 and you can get an enclosure from macsales.com, you can also use a bare doch, Google for them.

  • How to connect external hard drive and DV camera

I have just bought a macbook pro with only one firewire 400 port. My question is, what is the best way to connect up an external hard drive and a DV camera so I can import video to Final Cut. Should I be plugging the camera directly into the external hard drive's firewire port and conecting the hard drive to mac via USB or connecting DV to mac via Firewire and then mac to hard drive via USB? Or does it make no difference!
    Thanks in advance

If the drive has two firewire ports, connect the camera to one FW port on the back of the drive and connect the drive to the computer using the other port.
If the drive does not have two firewire ports, you'll need an Expresscard 34 firewire card to create a second firewire bus. The card goes in the slot on the side of the computer. Hook up either the camera or the drive to it.
The cards can be found online for a reasonable sum of money.
    Do not use USB.
    Good luck.

  • File transfer from MacBook Pro into external hard drive

I can't copy files from the MacBook into an external hard drive.
In the 'Get Info' section, it says read-only. However, the hard drive have just been recently bought.
I had the same problem with our previous hard drive. Although the previous hard drive was 'read-only' I was able to copy and paste files in our old HP laptop.
What can I do in order to copy and paste files from the MacBook into the hard drive?
    Hard drive = Toshiba
    Capacity = 1TB

In my last paragraph, I said
"Note that Windows PCs cannot write natively to an HFS drive, so if you need to exchange files between Mac and PC, we need to talk about different options."
Windows cannot read Mac Extended (HFS) formatted drives; the Mac cannot write to Windows (NTFS) formatted drives.
The only formats fully compatible between Mac and PC are FAT32 (largely deprecated) and exFAT. If you need full read-write compatibility between Windows and Mac, and you can erase the drive (ie, it's a new drive or you have confirmed backups), reformat to exFAT using Disk Utility.
If you have a drive with files on it and you cannot erase them at the moment:
    - if the drive is formatted for the Mac, you can purchase MacDrive for the PC
    - if the drive is formatted for Windows (NTFS), you can purchase Paragon NTFS for the Mac.
