Placing Fireworks file in Photoshop w/ Roundtrip Fireworks Editing

I have a solution but it seems clunky and since I'm new to using both tools together I'm wondering if there is a better way.
Right now I can place a Fireworks CS5 file in Photoshop CS5. But if I double click the layer in Photoshop it forces me to edit the file in Photoshop instead of editing it in Fireworks which would be ideal. Also if I just edit the file directly in Fireworks and save it in Fireworks it won't update that layer in Photoshop automatically, which would also be ideal. Right now I have to replace the contents of the layer with the file each time I edit it with Fireworks. Is there a better way?
I've read these two articles which
Launch and Edit Preferences in Fireworks (seemed like what I wanted but they have no effect)
Place Fireworks graphics in Photoshop (exporting seems like the wrong approach if I want to continue editing in Fireworks)
Thanks for helping out!

I think this would be helpful as a feature, I t
ried using a linked FW file in an Illustrator document and then using the Illustrator as a smart object, the update work for the Illustrator Smart object and updated but Photoshop refused to recognized the updated smart object.
I cannot really understand this but perhaps just something that was never looked at before. In theory this should work.
Maqybe Chris has an explanation why it does not work.
Although I would say the pluyg in is something Adobe should look at if it could be had.

Why am I not able to export NEF files to Photoshop from Lightroom to edit. This is new. When I right click on an image, the export to PS option is not selectable. I've never had this happen before. I haven't used it for a few weeks, so maybe there's an update (Mac or otherwise) that's screwing things up? HELP!

I have an Edit In - Photoshop option, but not an Export - Photoshop option.
Obviously to have right-click Edit In to work, the photo you're right-clicking on needs to be selected.  I assume this is not the problem, and that the photo is selected.
Mavericks 10.9.3 has a problem where the Users folder is hidden, and you need to update iTunes to fix it, but it's been a few weeks since this happened so hopefully you're up-to-date and the Users folder isn't hidden anymore.
If you can't get things to work, I'd uninstall LR and uninstall Photoshop, then install Photoshop, and update it, then install LR and update it, as a way to get any wayward security or other OS-level things reset.

  • Opening Fireworks files in Photoshop

I created some drawings in Fireworks CS4 web standard, and sent them to a friend who has a CS4 that has photoshop instead of Fireworks, as he uses it for magazine editing and not for web publishing. The drawings went out in .png format with about 10 layers. When he opens the file, there is only one layer and it is locked.
How can I send the files to him so that each layer appears in the layers panel and can be locked or unlocked?
Some years ago, when I had both Fireworks and Photoshop, and Fireworks was a Macromedia product, I could switch between them with no problems. Now they are both Adobe products, this option seems to have gone. Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Solved. Fireworks can save files in eps format as well as .png, Which can be read by Photoshop. I downloaded a trial version of photoshop to test it out.
Looks like Photoshop has changed since I last used it. Horses for courses - I'll stick with Fireworks for the moment.

  • Exporting Fireworks CS5 file to Photoshop... simple, right?

The last time I looked into this, there wasn't an easy way. I'm hoping for something different this time around... I have a layered Fireworks .png made up of the following, which I am trying to export to Photoshop so that someone else can make edits.
    13 pages
Groups that contain various combinations of text, vector, and bitmap images
Symbols that contain text, vector, and bitmap images
For issue #1 above, I already know that I'll have to export each page as an individual photoshop file... my 5MB file now is suddenly going to be some gigantic .zip archive of 13 .psd files. It's not ideal, but I can live with that. If there's another way that I am not aware of, I would love to hear about it.
Issue #2 is a pain, but again I can live with it. I just have to ungroup everything and deal with messy layers, or spend time creating sub-layers, so that the text would remain editable in photoshop. I haven't looked into exporting editable vector because it's a lower priority at this point.
Issue #3 is a HUGE pain. All symbols export to photoshop as a flattened bitmap image, which means that I have to go into my efficiently organized Fireworks file and replace *every* *single* *symbol* with a bunch of objects! This sucks big time because now my layers suddenly get much more messy and the file more complex.
What I would love to see is for #2, groups, and #3, symbols, to just be exported into Photoshop as Smart Objects, so that I'm not sitting here wasting my time making my efficiently organized Fireworks file into a messy and bloated one just so that I can export it in an editable format.
I surely can't be the only person who's had to deal with this issue can I?

Please leave your judgment out of the discussion. I'm not asking for your opinion of whether my workflow is backward or not. For the record, I do agree with that this is a backward workflow because Fireworks is incredibly more efficient than Photoshop for this. But, it's what my client is requesting and their in-house design team works with Photoshop. I'm not going to tell my client to "just go download Fireworks and learn it" without doing my due-diligent and seeing what I can do to accommodate their needs.

  • Problems placing ai and eps files into PhotoShop CS3 on a Mac

When I place any ai or eps file into PhotoShop using File > Place, the images are pixelated. It does not matter if the PhotoShop file size is 72 dpi or 300 dpi, the end result is still the same.
Placing images used to work a few days ago, and now all of a sudden it does not. Are there any settings that may have been changed?

I can’t reproduce the problem, but as with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program.

  • Can you DEBUG Fireworks files?

I've created a flyout menu using Fireworks. When I "test" the
flyout from Fireworks it appears to work fine - all levels of the
menu working as I had designed. I integrated the nav menu into my
Dreamweaver template for a client's website and FTP'd the results
    to the test site.
Unfortunately, once up on the website, the menu doesn't work
as expected. The first level menu structure works (on mouseover the
2nd level menu's "flyout") - but the 3rd level menu's do not work
at all. I also find that after navigating away from index.html the
    2nd level menus stop working!
I'm trying to find out how to debug the entire process to see
why Fireworks won't integrate properly with the Dreamweaver
template I integrated the Fireworks file into. If anyone has any
    ideas I'd appreciate a shout...

    Russ,
Lots of people post because they have trouble with Fireworks
menus. Usually, these people want a magic fix or are willing to
spend days in the belief that it "just has to work, somehow!" (For
    example, this thread:
    Help
with Rollovers and Hotspots for Drop Down Webpage Menu...)
Fireworks is primarily a graphics application. What you're
doing is making code. The best environment for that is a coding
environment. You should build menus in Dreamweaver. That said,
there are professional plug-ins to Dreamweaver that will make the
job of building menus easier as well as very robust.
Here are two sites that have menu plug-ins for Dreamweaver:
    Pluginlab
    Limited
    Project Seven
The Project Seven menus are regularly recommended, but I have
no personal experience with either of them.
    Good luck!

  • Editing fireworks files from dreamweaver

I am using CS3 on an iMac with an Intel core 2 duo processor
and 2GB of RAM. I created a fireworks file which I then imported
into Dreamweaver. The problem starts when I select the table and
click edit to take me back to fireworks. I get the following
warning dialogue in Fireworks: "Please reinstall your software. A
problem was detected with your application. Please reinstall this
software to correct the problem." I have reinstalled Fireworks but
this dialogue is still coming up. Can anyone help me?

First off, it's usually a poor decision to use FW HTML,
    unless you know
enough HTML to be able to anticipate and correct the problems
    you will
encounter with that FW-generated markup. Of course, if you
    know enough HTML
to do that, you would just do it all in DW, which is the
    right thing to do
    anyhow.
What version of DW and FW are you using?

  • Fireworks 8 or Photoshop CS2?

I have a golden opportunity that I need help with. I have
been using DW8 for a few months and have produced a few websites.
My boss apparently has taken notice of the sites and wants me to do
more websites for the company. BTW, I am an accountant, not a
website designer, but I really enjoy working with DW8. My boss will
support a graphics program for me. By support, I mean he will buy
the program, one or two books and a video tutorial. I have used a
trial version of Photoshop CS2 and Fireworks 8 and can’t
decide which one to choose. Does anybody have any real world
experience or suggestions? Here are the conclusions I have come to
    so far:
PCS2 is a more complicated (hence more powerful) program and
can probably do more things. I have not spent much time with this
one yet. FW8 seems to work well with DW8 since both are Macromedia
programs. Don’t know where Adobe is going with the merging of
the two (PCS2 and FW8). What about suggested books and videos? I
have seen Lynda.com for tutorials and they seem to be pretty good,
as is Total Training. Any help would be appreciated as I
didn’t want to jump into a decision without giving it some
    thought.

  • Reference Fireworks files by link?

In InDesign, there is a way to reference a file (create a link to another file). When you update the original file, the referencing file, when opened, asks the user 'would you like to update the link?'; is this action possible in Fireworks?
This is what the popup dialogue box looks like.
Here is my use case: create screens for applicaiton, then create wireframe document that references that file. Problems are, for me, that if I edit the original document at the moment I don't know of a way to link the file into the wireframe .fw document. So keeping the two up to date and "n'sync" (sorry, had to) is quite a PITA for a larger project.
Tl/Dr: I would like to automate the task of keeping a document up to date referencing other Fireworks files.
Thanks for any insight and long live Fireworks

    Hey Groove,
Thanks for the reply. Here's a quick exerpt from John Dunning regarding his LinkedImages extension that seems to address this functionality!:
When you import an image into a Fireworks document, Fireworks doesn't maintain any link between the source file and the bitmap element in the document. If the source file changes, you'll need to find it, re-import it and then delete the previous image in the document. The Linked Images extension makes this process a little easier.
I'll further test this solution and let you know how it goes. Also, I tried the solution you presented using Symbols, but could not get the image to come across correctly.
    Again, thanks for the insight!

If it's a flash cs3 fla, then you might have a lot of problem since cs3 has new features that flash8 cant take care of.

  • Cannot open Photoshop CS4 files using Photoshop 7

Hi - I would be very grateful if anyone has solved this problem before and can help me.
I am trying to send a smallish (5 Mb) layered CMYK Photoshop file from my version (CS4) to someone who is still using Photoshop 7 but they are completely unable to open it. I have saved it using 'Maximize Compatibility' and there are just 3 layers, no fancy layer effects, no layer sets, and each layer has a transparent background. Every time the other person tries to open it (via File -> Open), their Photoshop hangs and they have to force quit. It will open in Graphic Converter but it is then saved as a flattened image which is no good. I'm at my wits' end what to do to get this to open in PS7 - does anyone have any ideas?
    I am using Photoshop CS4 on a Mac Pro, OS X 10.6.3; they are using Photoshop 7 on a G4 867 DP, OS X 10.4.11.
    Thanks very much -
    Deb.

If anyone else should come across this sort of problem, here's the scoop:
It's a metadata parsing bug in Photoshop 7 and CS/8 (version 3-6 no problem, version 9-12 no problem).  It is caused by the history metadata in the file, possibly because of the length of the history, possibly because of the InDesign history bits.  I don't have a MacOS 10.1 system avaialble to debug Photoshop 7 any more, so I can't be positive about the exact cause.  But we know that Photoshop CS2 and later work just fine.
If you wait 30 minutes, Photoshop 7 does eventually load the file.  But that hurts productivity.
The history metadata can't easily be deleted in Photoshop (or ImageReady, Fireworks, etc.).  But if you copy the layers to a new document, the history metadata won't be carried over.  Save the copy, and that copy will work just fine in Photoshop 7 and CS/8.
