Placing Illustrator EPS Problem

I am trying to import an 6.875 x 10.5 inch document created in Illustrator CS6, saved as an eps, into Indesign CS6. Here is the problem:
The file is lettering for a comic book, so the lettering is randomly occuring on the page. It doesn't spread to the borders of the
of the 6.875 x 10.5 inch page. When I go to place it into Indesign, it comes in cropped to the dimensions of where the actual
lettering fitted on the illustrator page. (for example, if I just had once caption box with text in the middle of the page that was
1x5 inches, the imported eps document will come in as a 1x5 inch eps file.)  The problem here is that I can't center it properly
without having to adjust each imported eps and line it up with the page. This is rather diffucult because it has to line up precisely.
I remember this being a problem in CS4 also, but I came to a solution and can't remember what it was.
So my question is, How do I get Indesign to recognize the Illustrator eps as a 6.875 x 10.5 inch document that I can just center
using the align tools? Not sure if it is something in illustrator I need to do.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

One other thing. I used to be able to drag the file from "finder" on my mac, directly onto the ID document. It would then automatically place it there. Now when I do, there is the small preview box that comes up. I then have to double click to get the file to come in. Then it just crops it to the "artwork only", not the actually entire crop area. To top it off, once I get the file in, regardless of how, I can't use the align tools to get the file centered. This is really making my workflow counter productive. To have to "cnt + d" instead of just dragging and dropping the files and then using align tools to get everything centered is going to make putting a 200 page book a very long process. I have to be missing something here. I can't believe that these simple things would be removed from ID in the latest version.  Basically my work flow is this. Create an ID document and then drag and drop the "tiff" files of the art on one layer. Then doing to the same with the lettered eps files. The reason I don't just use the illustrator file is because when I save an Illustrator file that I simply add lettering on top of the artwork, it makes a 15mb piece of tiff artwork with the illustrator lettering into a 30mb file (if not larger). So I have to remove the art and then save it as an artless file, with just the lettering. I'd be more than happy to hear if anybody has a better way to do this. Illustrator is bloating my files. Once I separate the art and the lettering only files, I am working with the 15mb art and then 350kb eps file of the artwork, instead of working with a 30 plus mb Illustrator file. That starts to seriously make the file size of a 200 page book go up. Thanks

  • Get colour values from Placed (illus) EPS in indesign

    Hi Forum,
There are ways to find colour values of the objects created in indesign native file. thanks to ~Trevor~ for have taught me, how to script & find fillColor using GREP preferences...
but, is there any way to script "find color values on the placed illustrator eps file in indesign",  Illus. Eps is in CMYK mode...
    thanks

Here's how to convert RGB to CMYK:
    function rgb2CMYK (r,g,b){
        var color = app.documents[0].colors.add({space:ColorSpace.RGB,colorValue:[r,g,b]});
        color.space = ColorSpace.CMYK;
        var retVal = color.colorValue;
        color.remove();
        return retVal;
The same idea for the reverse.

  • CS4 EPS PROBLEMS FROM ILUSTRATOR TO InDesign

    Hi,
Original illustrator file, simple line, looks good in .ai   Also looks good as an .eps in Illustrator. When brought into CS4 InDesign we see very fine, faint
bitmapped negative lines - - as if the .eps was not fully drawn.
We have remedied this by stumbling upon using a TIFF. The TIFF appears complete.
Is there some transfer problem with Illustrator .eps to InDesign, and how may we remedy?

  • [IDCS3] Mathtype equations eps problem

    Hi all,
I'm using IDCS3 & Mathtype 6.0, we placed the eps file from mathtype to InDesign and did ps to PDF. I noticed that some of the characters in pdf are applied artificial bold in some equations.
When we check closely, I think it is not concerned with InDesign, if we place the eps file directly into PDF it shows artificial bold in some places. I placed the screenshot below.
In the 1st image in 2nd line, 35-9/60, 0 is duplictaed twice so it appears as artificial bold in in 2nd image in the pdf.
But it is actually a single character when opening the same eps file in Math type.
Why this occouring? Anyone came across this kind of prob..
    Any suggestions would be helpful..

    Hello,
Your problem maybe concerned with MathType's bug.
You must have problems with generated PS from publication with MathType equations placed as EPS (lost or jumping characters).
There is a way to correct it. But in this case you must do some changes in MathType EXE-file.
    1. Do a copy of MathType.exe.
    2. Use HEX editor.
    3. Open MathType.exe by HEX editor and find ASCII code
    /ns {cf sf} bdef
    4. Change "b" to white space (" ") carefully.
    5. Save MathType.exe.
    6. Recreate equations. EPS-files must be created by edited MathType.exe once more before problems will disappear.
    7. Now all your PS and PDF will be Ok.
Please, do copies of all your files before all changes... to revert in problems case...
And this is not well method because of changing of MathType code. Sorry.

  • OSX 10.6 does not differentiate between PS or illustrator .eps files

Have other people encountered this problem?
I have found that snow leopard does not differentiate between photoshop and illustrator .eps files in order to double click and open them.
Does anyone know how to correct this?

    Hello Chris,
Thanks so much for clarifying about OSX 10.6 opening .eps files in illustrator or photoshop.
I was wondering if you knew out how
to create a droplet that opens multiple PDFs and saves as .gifs.
    When I
try to do it, all of the .gifs end up having the same name as the file
that I created the script with, and a "-1" at the end.
    Actually
there are two droplets that I want to create (to be able to
    drop multiple pdf files):
    Portrait/Square
    script:
Final thumbnail file to be 51 pixels wide by (x?) pixels
    tall
Final thumbnail file should be 72 dpi,
    Final
thumbnail file should be flattened(no transparency in white areas),
Final thumbnail file should have a 1 pixel wide Grey border to all
    sides
Final thumbnail file should be saved as a GIF file, RGB
    Landscape script:
Final thumbnail file to be 65 pixels wide by (x?)
    pixels tall
Final thumbnail file should be 72 dpi,
    Final
thumbnail file should be flattened(no transparency in  white areas),
Final thumbnail file should have a 1 pixel wide Grey border to all
    sides
Final thumbnail file should be saved as a GIF file, RGB
      Thanks,

Subject: OSX 10.6 does not differentiate between PS or illustrator .eps files
Given EPS files are "really" Illustrator files (Photoshop not being a
vector application), you probably want to make Illustrator the default.
    No.
EPS files can be produced and read by many applications.
And most EPS files cannot be read by Illustrator.
Frequently EPS files in particular need to be edited in the application which created them (Freehand vs. AI vs. Quark gradients anyone?).

  • Mail keeps crashing when attaching illustrator .eps files

Whenever I receive or try to attach an Illustrator .eps file, mail crashes. The .eps file is fine, and can be read by CS and CS2 software.
Whenever Mail tries to read the attachment, it seems it can't cope and quits.
Bit of a bummer when I'm a designers and that's what I need to send to clients.
The only way I get around it is by zipping or stuffing it as a stuffit file.
How can I reload Mail or cure the problem?
    All ideas welcome

Look at the console logs for any errors that occur at the same time Mail crashes. What do the errors say?

  • The difference between photoshop eps and illustrator eps

Before installing snow leopard, Quark Xpress could distinguish between photoshop eps and illustrator eps files when a file needed to be modified. Now all it does is open files in only one item of software (depending on which you have told it to open files in). It's very inconvenient
    Anyone got any ideas?

It sounds like you may have assigned EPS files to open in a particular app. That causes anything ending in .eps to open in that app, and the OS ignores the rest of the UTI (Uniform Type Identifiers) data.
About the only way to fix it is to clear the LaunchServices database. Close all running applications. Open the Terminal and copy/paste the following line and press Enter:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Close the Terminal and immediately restart. The OS will build a new database based on the installed applications. EPS files created by a particular application should now open in that app.

  • Packaging an InDesign document with Placed Illustrator Files which contain PLACED GRAPHICS!

I've got an InDesign document 215 pages long.  Each page contains a placed Illustrator document... and each Illustrator document contains a placed TIFF.
When I package the InDesign Document the Illustrator files are gathered into the new location, but InDesign does not gather the TIFFs.  I need to get this material to the book designer, but relinking 215 pages is going to be a very risky and time consuming process--one that will have to be done OVER and OVER again as the project moves from one location to another.  Can anyone recommend a solution?  Why doesn't InDesign look for nested files?
Does anybody understand what I'm talking about?
    --Jay

The reason behind link (.psd in layers) means in the future it can be edited.
If the person receiving to package needs to edit the layers of a PSD placed in an Illustrator file, then yes you would have to manually include the layered PSDs. But if it's just a matter of ensuring full res and color managed output downstream then saving as PDF does that and preserves the links to layered files locally. So if I save as PDF trash a link and reopen the PDF in Illustrator it will look for the link:
If you save as .ai with the links embedded, the users downstream would be able to unembed and edit a flattened version of the placed art.

  • Preview in Illustrator EPS

I cannot get a preview in Illustrator eps but I can get one in Illustrator.ai. How come? Thanks.

    >I typically click on the saved file ( in list view ) and see a thumbnail of the file in Illustrator.
Are you sure you don't mean column view?
What current version; what OS version? Have you been able to do this in several prior versions of Ai and prior OS versions?
I am on 10.4.11 and AICS3, but can't remember it ever working as you describe back to Illustrator 5 and the corresponding Mac OS. Is there a preference I need to set? Can others please confirm or comment on this.
It seems that this is the very issue of the original post and Scott's #1 response. Note that Scott has some credentials with Ai. My earlier comments on Scott's response to Ron's post was in essence that it should work as described by John in #10, and that Scott's explanation for it not working that way seemed to me inadequate. IOW I think Scott can and should have given a better explanation.
Can other users please report wether the Ai eps preview works for you as described in #s 10 & 12, or wether you simply get an Ai Icon in the File > Open dialog from any version of Illustrator.
    Thanks,
    Al

  • Illustrator EPS behavior

In an Illustrator file, an object (such as a path, image or an effect) exceeds the defined document size...
The file (saved as Illustrator EPS) is imported into a page layout program...
Should the document size (defined in Illustrator) 'crop' the file or does the object that exits be visible and affect the file's bounding box in the page layout program?
I hope this description is clear.

As I understand it, the EPSF specification does not provide for definition of document page size.
An EPS saved out of Illustrator should not "crop" content to any defined document size.
To your concern regarding page layout applications, a simple test will answer your question. Create a quick AI document with one rectangle inside and one outside the artboard and save as EPS. You'll see that Quark, InDesign, and Pagemaker ignore the artboard bounds (document size).
A clipping mask applied in Illustrator is another matter entirely.

  • EPS Problem

    Hello All,
My client has given me .EPS file which is a web template but when I opened in photoshop it doesn't show the layer and it opened as raster file (No layers). Can someone help me how to open this file so that I can view the layers and amend it accordingly.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
    H Rak

Illustrator EPS is not simply plain PostScript, it contains a copy in *.AI format, see below.
In my understanding, Photoshops can read ONLY the PostScript part,
and this doesn't contain layers, it's a flattened version, because PostScript
    never had offered layers.
    http://www.thegraphicmac.com/illustrator-file-formats-explained
    "Illustrator EPS (.eps)
This long-standing file format, which is short for Encapsulated PostScript, is supported by most all standard graphics applications.
Unfortunately, .eps files do not support transparency, so files you create that contain transparency are “flattened” so other programs
can import them. When you save as an .eps, most effects are expanded and text may or may not be broken apart in order to flatten
the file – however Illustrator saves a copy of the file in .ai format inside the .eps file so that you can edit the file later in Illustrator if
you wish. The .eps format has been widely used as the “standard” file format for saving artwork to be used for print production work
with Quark XPress for many years, but recently began loosing love from users due to its large file size and lack of support for transparency.
Personally, I no longer use the .eps format. Since the introduction of InDesign and Smart Objects in Photoshop, I find the .ai format
for flexible and the file sizes more manageable."

  • CS3 Illustrator crashing problem

    Hello all,
Lately my illustrator cs3 has been crashing every time I try to save a new file. It is so frustrating after doing all the work and can't save. I work on Windows XP 2002 system. Can anyone help?
    Thanks so much!

Hi Jacob, Just so you know, I was in a hurry and no way was able to buy an expensive product to do my artwork project. I couldn't find older TRIAL versions to download without 3rd party attached  programs & BS that could be bad to do.
But, I need to go back on the forum to say that I rebooted to try one more time and it worked. Don't know why it didn't work the first time around because it was a fresh open of Illustrator, hadn't been working on it for a month then the first time didn't work.
I don't have time to go back on the forum right now got to leave for work. You can mention you heard this from me if you want so that people aren't misinformed.
    thanks for replying
