Placing in Illy CS2

Does anyone know how to do precice placing and sizing in Illustrator as Indesign does? When I place an object such as a tif or jpg, Illustrator just throws it anywhere on the screen at whatever size it is. I'm working in speed so sizing them prior to placing is irrelevant - I need custom sizing capability before it appears on the page. Thanks much - Michelle

But AI is not really a full fledge layout program if you are working for speed I would think this a document that you might want to do in ID. Photoshop has different requirements as you edit images with it.
We are talking about different animals and I know you are interested in using AI for certain types of AI specific documents that you might have many of still in all AI is not a layout program.
I think if you want this then you should make a feature request for a placement loaded cursor. I do not think I have ever read anyone requesting this or complaining about the behavior before on the forum.
Although no that I think of it it might be handy to have if you have a lot of art work for a complex work of art. I wonder how other users feel about this I am more curious as to why no one ever brought the subject up, well maybe I just missed it.

  • Drop Shadow On Placed PDF Illustrator CS2 XPSP3

    Hi,
Is it not possible to add a drop shadow to a placed PDF in Illustrator CS2? I'm not managing.
    Thanks for any help,
    Ariel

I don't have CS2, I have CS4.  If you, or someone else, generate in CS4 a PDF in Illustrator and save as Illustrator PDF, then open a new AI file and Place the vector graphic(s) the drop shadows work on the artwork itself.  If you generate a vector graphic in Photoshop and save the file as a Photoshop PDF then Place it in Illustrator, it will create a drop shadow around the bounding box of the canvas that you had in PS.  I will now try to use a Photoshop PDF with an Alpha Channel and delete the background, save it as a Photoshop PDF and see if it will generate a drop shadow around the artwork, rather than the bounding box.  Stay tuned . . .

  • Placing Images with CS2

    Hello:
I really hope someone can help me with this. I am using photoshop to create a banner and am having an issue. When I open a new document in photoshop, then use the "place" feature in File to insert a photo from my computer, it distorts the color properties of the photo upon insertion. It doesn't seem to matter where the photo came from or whether it's a .png file or a .jpg file, it does the same thing everytime. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this keeps happening? Could it be my settings?
    Thanks in advance.

As far as the image being profiled or unprofiled...I'm clueless, sorry. Regarding the Color Settings, I hope this is what you're looking for. I went into the Edit menu and chose 'color settings'. This is what it gave me:
    Working Spaces:
    Color Settings: Custom
    RGB Custom RGB
CMYK: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
    Gray: Dot Gain 20%
    Spot: Dot Gain 20%
    Color Management Properties:
    RGB: Preserve Embedded Profiles
    CMYK: Preserve Embedded Profiles
    Gray: Preserve Embedded Profiles
    Conversion Options:
    Engine: Adobe (ACE)
    Intent: Relative Colorimetric
Use black point compensation (this box is checked)
Use Dither 8 byte channel images (this box is checked)
    Advanced Controls:
Desaturate monitor color by 20% (this box is not checked)
Blend RGB colors using Gamma 1.00 (this box is not checked)

  • ID CS2 Incorrectly Rendered & Output Placed PDF

Out of necessity, I run many plates as placed pdf's into CS2. Fully patched (patches for CS2 are long done of course) what appears to be a fine pdf failed to render a small simple gradient.
Sequence - A Logo was created in Illy CS5, info shows as Adobe pdf library 9.90, Compatibility 1.5 (Acrobat 6). The logo sheet was placed (lettersize trim) and cropped to the 2 Spot version In ID CS3. (Production notes, cmyk values, etc. cropped)
This CS3 file exported to pdf, and placed into CS2. CS2 failed to build the gradient included in one spot.
Any thoughts relevant to avoiding this. Screen shot shows problem.

It is the machine which see's the printer.
More to the point - It prints to a Mac Shared printer, an Agfa imagesetter.
Other Windows based machines and the Mac sharing the printer have one of two problems - Plates image with the fonts "crammed" . At the end of lines or paragraphs fonts are crammed, set upon/overlapping each other as if the device did not understand the spacing. (Send ppd fonts is always toggled in dialogs without effect.) The workaround is to plate all files with the transparency flattener. I avoid this extra step.
My primary Win Vista station cannot succesfully install the printer; the process I use is Bonjour Printer Wizard which adds Mac printers on Win machines. After discovering the Agfa, windows cheerfully loads a Cannon Bubble Jet driver for it. Quite annoying. I have installed the Agfa PPD local to my System PPD folder, but it's not quite right.

Why are you placing PDFs into CS2?
To make direct plates; the file in question was for another print shop, in this case I am their service provider.

  • How do I disable Illustrator (CS6) from recognising TIFF paths inside placed TIFF files?

    Hi all,
I have recently output a job to print that was supplied .AI with a simple .TIFF image placed on an artboard at its desired crop.
After referring to the original TIFF file I have realised whilst inside illustrator my image suddenly has a clipping mask attached to it, and a lot of it is missing. (however in outline, illustrator only see's a single TIFF bounding box)
Looking more closely at the TIFF in Photoshop, i've found it has x3 paths inside it!)
Illustrator is picking these up and masking my photo. Is there a default function or process that can stop this from happening in the future, so it ignores any paths within the file?
It's concerning how many jobs may be ruined because of this auto feature.
I look forward to your response
    Thanks
    Matt

haha, it's not an easy one to describe.
So when checking the TIFF initially, it is a flat locked image: (image below)
when placed into Illustrator CS2 and outputting a PDF, I get this correct result: (image below)
When placed into illustrator CS6 and output to PDF I get this incorrect result: (image below)
Close up detailing masking effect: (image below)
When looking more closely in photoshop at my TIFF, it has this inside of it: (image below)
However, in illustrator there is nothing I can release anywhere as it still treats it as a flat image: (image below)

  • CS2 - Where is the Gradient?

I was emailed this pdf logo by a client. I placed it into CS2 and flattened transparency.
In the logo, there is a white circular gradient that is visible; yet it doesnt show up on any of the layers and cannot be selected. When I copy and paste the logo, the gradient disappears. When I move the logo, the gradient stays in the same spot.
How can I copy paste and resize this logo and include the gradient?
    Thanks,
    J

We cannot see the file because hte attachment is queued. Attachments are basically a waste of time. By the time the attachment passes through the queue, your post has dropped low in the list and people are ignoring it. Post the file elsewhere and add a link in a new post.
I've had this happen. Often I'll see this when I open the file...
Later, the gradient looks like this in the Layers panel...
I haven't bothered to look into it further, so I suspect a more thorough explanation will come from one of the pros. But my guess is that Illustrator encoded the gradient in a way that the PDF format understands but does not translate back into a gradient when opened in Illustrator. PDFs are not meant to be opened and edited, so anything you get that you can work with is gravy. You'll just have to recreate the gradient.

  • CS2 exported PDF comes out negative

A supplied PDF ad was placed in InDesign CS2.  When the page is exported at 300 dpi, the halftone images within the ad are reversed to negative form.  Everything else on the page is ok.  Any ideas what's happening?  If the ad is rasterized in Photoshop, there is not problem.  I would just like to know what is causing this.

I replaced the preferences and that did not work.  I played around with a few more export variations.  It appears to export fine with CS3 and CS4, so I have to agree that there's something odd in the way CS2 handles the images.  More specifically the manner in which is handles color.  In using CS2, I can achieve the desired result if I change the output color to anything BUT "No color conversion."  So it boils down to how CS2 handles the (monotone) spot black images that are created in Quark 7.
We certainly have many options to move forward with, but no concrete answer as to why it happens.
Thank you so much for your assistance.

  • Placed image scale anomaly

A funny thing happened on my way to the theatre ...
Some days ago I placed an image into an Illie file, linked, 100% scale.
This morning I needed to edit the linked file in Photoshop. This involved cropping a bit off the bottom of it, thereby changing its dimensions.
Just to check that everything was still o.k. at the Illie end (because I somehow suspected that it might not be), I opened the Illie file.
Lo and behold, everything was not o.k. The placed image had scaled itself up by some few % becoming too wide.
Rather than fiddle around with scaling, I placed the image again and it came in in the right size.
I notice that exactly the same thing happens when I have Illie open while I am editing the image. The placed image hops visibly when Illie reads the new size.
Can anyone tell me why this is and how does Illie recognise the size of placed images?
Does she calculate the area or what is it that happens?
Here's an example that I tried afterwards, not having kept the original measurements:
Original image file 63.218 x 47.414 mm (placed in Illie at 100% scale)
Cropped in PS to 63.218 x 44.027 mm
Changes in Illie to 64.846 x 45.161 mm (scale 102.576%)
I can't make sense of the figures. Is anyone out there better at maths than I am? (Sure there must be!)

When you update a link, then image is scaled to fit the original bounding box size because of the default in the links palette >> placement options >> transforms
Links palette >> placement options>> dimensions should help. What I do not like most of these options later have blank sapce around the image, and it is hard to use the transform palette or snapping to for example snap to the edge of a die or guide.
I replace the image after the canvas size changes in photoshop, cause placement options though it has been around forever is not really that useful. Maybe  someone else out there agrees/disagrees or has a different way to deal with this updating of resized images in Illustrator

  • CS2 Imported PDF Printdown Issue

When a PDF is imported into an InDesign CS3 document and printed there are no issues at all.
However when the same is done using CS2, if there is a Vectored Artwork within the PDF the black copy turns to 100% Cyan.
The simple fix would be to use CS3 but the printer in question only has CS2 and therefore printed a black logo blue.
Is this a known issue with InDesign CS2 and is it acknowledged by Adobe?
    Cheers
    Allan

    >This makes no more sense then using Quark to impose PDFs.
I beg to differ. While it's not an imposition tool "per se," InDesign is a LOT better at handling placed PDFs than QuarkXPress. Placing a PDF of a fractional ad in a layout is, after all, really no different than imposition a number of "pages" together. Both should work.
In answer to the original question, this is not, AFAIK, a general problem. I'm guessing that it has something to do either with the PDF itself, or with the printer's system. If you'd like to send me the file, I'll try placing it in CS2, and see what prints. (Click my name for the address.)

  • Illustrator CS2 won't execute scripts under Vista.

    Dear group.
I would like to hear if anyone has experienced weird behaviors by Illustrator CS2 when running scripts (written in JavaScript) under Windows Vista? By "weird" I mean that at the execution of the code, it may complain that a closing bracket is missing and other errors. It seems to run fine when executing the script in ExtendScript Toolkit, and Illy CS2 didn't exhibit such problems under WinXP SP2.

I'm no system expert, Mylenium.  Here's what I can tell you: yes, I did try the installation as the administrator.  No luck.  Didn't know to turn off aero or switch to a different theme, so haven't tried that.  Don't know what UAC is, so can't (yet) turn it off.  Here's the thing: all of the other parts of the suite installed.  The setup.ini file for both Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 contains the following:
    [SupportOS]
    Win95=1
    Win98=1
    WinME=1
    WinNT4=1
    Win2K=1
InDesign installed; Illustrator did not because the OS "was not supported," or words to that effect.  Unless "WinNT4" is code for Windows XP, these programs shouldn't have installed on an XP system, yet they did.
System CPU is an AMD Phenom 9600 quad-core.   6 GB RAM.  What else would you need to know?

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when placing Word document

    Hi,
I'm having a real problem placing a Word document into InDesign CS4. It crashes every time! I have found that if I disable the "import inline graphics" it successfully places the document. but enabling that option crashes InDesign.
I've tried saving as RTF, and even doing a simple copy-paste but the result is the same: InDesign crashes.
If you have an idea please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Ariel

Yes sir! The Word file that crashes CS4 is placed successfully in CS2. The saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind!
The only disadvantage is that each chapter is a separate file and in CS2 these need to be placed separately, whereas in CS4 (if it worked ;-)) they could all be placed in one go.
    Thanks Jongware,
    Ariel

  • Drop shadow in placed PS file

I think I already know the answer to this one but can anyone confirm?
I placed a Photoshop layer into Illy. It's got a % black multiplying drop shadow layer effect.
When placed into Illy the multiplying doesn't work. I'm using a red backgound colour and it's obvious that something's wrong.
The shadow looks light brownish on the bright red ground no matter whether I have Overprint Preview turned on or not.
Do I either have to (1) do the whole thing in Photoshop or (2) take the effect off the Photoshop layer and re-create in in Illy?
    Any remarks welcome.

Photoshop creates a composite layer when you save a layered PSD. If the file is saved without Maximize Compatibility, or if you change layer options in Illustrator, then Illustrator will create this composite layer instead. But no matter how the composite layer is created, it is only one layer, with one opacity setting.
You can duplicate the image and change layer options so taht one copy does not have the shadow, and one has only the shadow. Put the Shadow copy below the other image and set only the Shadow image's opacity to Multiply in Illustrator.

  • Moving scaled objects problem

Hey Guys, hope all are having a great Summer!!
My problem(s)...created a simple graphic, pencil & paint brush drawing (separate, not drawn together nor grouped together) to replace the 2 letter L's in "illustrator. Completed w/no problem, placed where I wanted to use them (a business card), but when I tried to move the word(in approx. 9 pt type) or scale larger I would get this warning... "Can't move the objects. The requested transformation would make some objects fall completely off the drawing area."
note: drawings contain a couple of simple 2 color grad., scaling using the "shift>drag" method, also tried to "option>drag" to duplicate! What am I doing or did do wrong?
Working on a mac PPC 2.0, 2gb ram, Illy CS2
    Thanks for any input! Les
    PS art board is 8.5x11

OldBob, Thanks for the link!!!! cleaned up stray points regardless, zoomed out like suggested- had plenty of room on scratchboard, however when I selected my design (drawings & type(outlined of course)) I seemed to also select 2 of my guides (which even though locked persisted to select & move with my drawing!) Hit ungroup and the problems went away!!! Don't know really why this happened but well.. WE got it to work!! Thanks so very much for your fast reply!! Les

  • Select all paths of a specific color in one document

    Hi,
I'm on Illy CS2, windows xp.
I want to open a doc, run a script that selects all paths of a color, say 255,0,0 or 50,0,20,4 and changes that color to black or another color I specify and also changes the stroke. Is this possible? I can't see how i would do it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stan

    Unfortunatly there is no getByColor method - below is a clunky way to get an array of objects that match a provided CMYK color : <br /><br />// Color you want to match<br /><br />myColor = new CMYKColor();<br />myColor.black = 50;<br />myColor.cyan = 0;<br />myColor.magenta = 0;<br />myColor.yellow = 0;<br /><br />foundObjects = getSameColor("ALL",myColor);<br /><br />function CMYKMatch(control,test)<br />{<br />     if (test.black == control.black && test.cyan == control.cyan && test.magenta == control.magenta && test.yellow == control.yellow)<br />     {<br />          return true;<br />     } else { <br />          return false;<br />     }     <br />}<br /><br />function getSameColor(type,color)<br />{<br />     var results = new Array();<br />     if (type != "FILL" || type != "STROKE" || type != "ALL")<br />     {<br />               myArt = app.activeDocument.pageItems;<br />               for(var i = 0; i<myArt.length;i++)<br />               {<br />                         if (myArt[i].typename != "TextFrame") <br />                         {<br />                              if (type == 'FILL' || type == 'ALL') {<br />                                   if (CMYKMatch(color, myArt[i].fillColor)) { results.push(myArt[i]); }<br />                              }<br />                              if(type == 'STROKE' || type == 'ALL') {<br />                                   if (CMYKMatch(color,myArt[i].strokeColor)) { results.push(myArt[i]); }<br />                              }<br />                         }     <br />               }<br />     }<br />     return results;<br /><br />}

  • Problem with typing in illustrator

When ever I hold down the shift key when I am typing in illustrator nothing comes up. It completely ignores every character I try to put in. Lower case works but upper does not. Has anyone heard of this or knows a fix I could use? I am not sure what I hit to make it do this.

    Thanks,

I have the same issue with a font I want to use.  Works fine in word programs, note pad, simple text, MS Word.  It will show up in Illustrator's font list but when I select it my type disappears!  Yes, it was a free download.  I have tryed a lot of things, re-downloaded same file, I have used three computers with illus, I downloaded the pc version(TTF), tryed that, then I converted it to Mac, I tryed it on an older machine and Illus 6.0, I tryed to resave the font and export outlines in FontMonger, tryed to resave as type1 and type3 - nothing,  Font Dr. says it's ok but FontBook says there are major problems when I activate it.  I don't know what the problem is with this font.  Seems like it has the preview info but no outline data.  If I know how Illus uses fonts differently than other programs I would have a better idea as to how to fix it.  I hope Illus isn't doing something so people will only use Adobe fonts... who knows, no one from Adobe is talking - from google searches, this has been a known issue for a long time.
