Placing in smart objects?

I am trying to place a picture into one of my smart objects but it wont let me, it keeps placing the picture in its own layer.

In the upper right hand corner of the layers panel is a small icon. Click it will open a sub menu. There you will find the option to replace the contents of the smart object. Make sure you have the smart object layer selected, first though.

  • Illustrator CS4 Text & Shape logo is pixelated when placing as smart object in PS

    I made a Logo in Illustrator CS4 containing text & shape. The lines are crisp and clear at 100% & 200%+. I save my file as an ai and also another version as outlined. But when I copy & paste it into Photoshop CS4 as a smart object it becomes pixelated when I zoom in more than 100%. Is there a way to fix this?
    When I use to do this in CS3 it worked fine, but now it doesn't work. The Photoshop file, placed as a smart object is the one on the left at 200%. You can already tell the pixels are distorted. The one on the right side is Illustrator file at 800% and is still crisp & clean. I've saved as eps, tiff, jpeg from illustrator and when opening it in photoshop and zooming in it's pixelated....and yes AA is turned on in Illustrator and nothing happens when I view as overprint either.
    First, I'd like the logo in jpeg crisp and clear when zoomed in.
    Second, I'd like to resolve the smart object issue in PS. I know a smart object will hold it's quality no matter the resize of the image in PS, but I can't get it to work... Can someone offer any suggestions

    What is the ppi of the Photoshop file?
    And for what it's worth, any raster image will never be as crisp and clear as a vector image, smart object or otherwise. Photoshop shows raster previews even if the actual object is vector. If you zoom in on any raster iamge, you'll see pixelation.

  • Change resolution of placed smart objects

    Hi!
    I have placed Several Smart Objects into a document.
    To Reduce File Size of the overall document, I open the Smart object (double click) and reduce the resolution by using Image>Image Size...
    This is archiving my goal of getting handleble Objects perfectly. But I am confused by the Behaviour of the placed objects, after i saved the smart object and return to the original document.
    Case A)
    The placed Object with reduces resolution is places and sized exactly like the original.
    Case B)
    The placed Object has changed it's size proportionally to its new resoluton. so normally, the Objects are now shrunken down and have to rescales manually.
    I normally Prefer Case A, but i can't firgure out, on wich rules the placed objects work in this case.
    Can someone tell me, how the Software desides to use Case A or B?

    The company already told me that they will refund my money so that is not the problem.
    The ratio differences is what the person told me initially too, however told me that I could also change the dimensions so that the photos would not be cropped and centered automatically...but that's not what I want to do, as it would leave white space on the sides and top, and I have several that I want to frame.
    So what do I do now? I have 100's of pictures and over 90% of them have this problem. I used your software to enhance the photos, crop the photos, etc... but I don't see an area that explains to me what part of the image will be cropped out once they are sent out to print. Nor to I see an area that gives me a rectangular dimension to work from. If I have to crop these pictures to get them to turn out right, I need to get started on this right away.
    When I print these on my own printer they seem to print just fine. There are too many to print this way, however.

  • CS5 is opening raw files as a smart object to files im currently working

    I just bough new CS 5 and find this big error. When i open raw file in Camera Raw and i have opened some jpg in CS5, it always opened as a smart object to this small jpg i have opened before. The same is doing my CS 5 when i drag some file from desktop, it always ended as a smart object in file im currently working with. Normaly it has to open as a new file not as a smart object in this file im already working with.

    How are you opening your RAW files? If you are dragging and dropping them onto Photoshop, on top of an already opened file's workspace -  all files will be placed as smart objects. If you drag the files to anywhere else in the interface, for instance the grey area on top of the workspace, they should open as usual. If you are opening them via Bridge or by double-clicking them in Explore, they should open as normal.

  • Smart Objects in CS4 not opening correctly

    I am experiencing a problem in CS4 at work that is giving some trouble. First off, I'm running a quad core, Mac Pro running Snow Leopard with 3GB of RAM.
    Here is my issue. If I have an existing Photoshop document with a placed EPS Smart Object file (which was created in Illustator CS3 or CS4) or I Place an image using File>Place, and I double click it to open for editing, it's opening in Preview and not in Illustrator. But, if I open the EPS in Illustrator, select the graphic, copy, then paste into Photoshop as a Smart Object, double-clicking the square to edit works just fine.
    After searching through the preference and Google searches, I just can't seem to figure out why.
    Please help for this is very frustrating!
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Chris,
    That's pretty much what I had to do. Basically, I had to control-I on an EPS file, change the Open WIth to Illustrator, then checked "use this application to open all like documents" . Works like a dream now.
    It appears that Snow Leopard restructured the way files are opened via their creator codes. If anyone is interested, here is a MacWorld article I found that was written back in September.

    Again, thanks for the help!

  • Program error after using connected smart objects

    Hello, dear friends. I need your help.
    My problem is:
    1. I placed linked smart objects in to the photo and then tried to replace content of this smart object. Suddenly program shut down. And If I try to do the same one more time the same happened.
    2. Some times I could do this operation till the end but replaced content didn't save my changes made for this smart object. And then program shut down again.
    This problem stops my work, that is why I'll be pleased to hear any solution.
    Thank you.

    What have you done for trouble-shooting so far? (Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be of special interest).

  • Updated Illustrator smart object in Photoshop views blurry

    Hi all,
    This is probably an insultingly simple query but:
    I've created a map in Illustrator, opened this as a smart object in Photoshop and dragged it in as layer in a PSD.
    When needing to make changes to the map, I've double clicked the smart object icon on the layer list which has opened the Illustator EPS of the map in Illustrator. Made changes, saved and closed - all is going according to plan up until this point.
    When I return to my PSD the smart object has updated alright but it looks all pixilated and blurry. The file hasn't been moved since I originally placed the smart object and nothing I do seems to give me a crisp updated smart object.
    My only option, which is a pain, is to open the original illustrator EPS - make changes - save and start again in Photoshop.
    There must be something I'm doing wrong.
    Any help appreciated!

    Thanks for your help, but still no joy I'm afraid.
    Here are the screenshots doing it the 'save as' way:

  • Smart Object Opens Blank Page

    I'm trying to get to the bottom of a strange phenomenon with Smart Object editable text in Photoshop. If I import text as a smart object I can double-click on that layer and it opens in Illustrator where I can edit the text, save it back and it updates in Photoshop. This is broken on some machines in our office. On OS X Leopard this feature works flawlessly. On OS X Snow Leopard it does not. And on some machines with OS X Lion it works and others it does not. Anyone else double-clicking on a smart object of text only to get a blank document in Illustrator with no paths and nothing on the pasteboard? CS5 Design Premium. Adobe experts, please advise.
    Perplexed,  Dave

    Apparently the solution for me, at least today, was a result of clearing Font caches. We use FontExplorer X Pro 3.1.1. It has some feature sets in it's Tools menu to Clean Application Font Caches in Microsoft and Adobe products. I ran that and a full System font-cache-clear and now I can edit text from a placed Photoshop smart object in Illustrator CS5 on Snow Leopard.

  • Jagged edge of Smart Objects in Photoshop CS4!

    Vector graphics created in Illustrator CS4 and pasted as Smart Objects into Photoshop CS4 used to appear perfectly smooth. This has stopped. I now get very jagged edged Smart Objects which are quite useless. I have checked all the Edit preferences and made sure Anti Alias is turned on in the Illustrator files to no effect. What can be done about this? What has suddenly changed and why? Would uninstalling & reinstalling CS4 solve this problem? Has anyone else experienced this and found the solution?

    Hi OldBob1957,
    Thanks for your helpful suggestion and the links which I've noted for future
    reference.
    However, I think the problem is solved and I'm indebted to Chris Cox of
    Photoshop Family for
    No idea. The only time I saw this happen was when someone mistakenly turned
    off the antialias
    feature when placing the smart object. (which is why I put the antialias
    checkbox in the transform
    toolbar to make it more visible in later releases)
    And of course when I checked I had done exactly that and been struggling for
    weeks!
    Now unblinkered.

    John

  • Smart Object Masks resizing problems

    I have encountered a problem with the masks I use on smart object layers resizing so that they only extend to the bounds of the image they are masking in photoshop cc. The problem occurring is that many times the mask is 1px too small, and leaves a hairline border of the masked image visible. This seems to be happening when the smart object is saved/updated or resized. One work around is placing this smart object in a group and then masking that group, but this is not an ideal way to organize my files and is not always applicable. I am trying to see if leaving the mask unlinked stops this behavior, however this is still not an ideal fix. Is anyone else experiencing this or knows of a preferences setting/solution etc. to fix this issue?  Thanks.

    Can you post a file that exhibits the behavior? (Dropbox or another sharing site)

  • Edits to a JPG Smart Object  in a layered TIFF file:  DOES NOT Save to the originally placed file?

    When placing a JPG as a Smart Object (and even multiples) into a layered TIFF file:  If I open each layered Smart Object JPG, make changes as a JPG and SAVE the file, I expect the ORIGINAL SOURCE JPG file that was placed to also be saved- I thought that is the file I was editing!
    This SUCKS!  To capture my edits to the original individual files:  I now have to open each layed TIF file, Edit each smart object JPG and SAVE AS to overwrite the original and capture my changes?  Is this the way its always been- I don't think it has.  How can I edit a Smart Object file in a layered document and ALSO update the SOURCE file?

    You should edit the original jpg, and then replace the smart object. There is a utility that makes this easier, if you do many of these. Looks liek this

  • Getting the filename of a placed image inside a smart object

    Hi
    I'm wondering if I can get any help with a problem I'm trying to overcome for a friend of mine.
    My friend is a photographer who does a lot of schhols work (pupil portraits) and wants to create a little document similar to this (very simplified) version:
    I'm trying to help him to create a batch process so that he can make this take up much less of his time!
    Here's where I've got to so far. I've created the layout above which is essentially a smart object (from an external file) manipulated in a couple of ways.
    The workflow as I see it at the moment (although I'm wide open to suggestions, and I'm having a bit of Friday brain) is this: I generate an action that replaces the content of the external file with the contents of (each file in his incoming list, sequentially).
    That file then comes back into the layout above and a new (flattened) copy is saved out from there.
    Rinse and rerpeat through the list of incoming files.
    I can just about make that bit happen using actions, but here's what I can't get - the filename of the incoming file (the one that's placed in the smart object). Can I can use a modified version of the AddFileName script to generate a text layer based on the filename of the placed contents in the smart object? Does any of that make sense? I'm reading this back to myself and even I'm not sure! ho ho.
    My lack of logic/coherent sentence structure here is what probably holds me back in any eforts I have made in getting into scripting.
    I'd appreciate any help that could be offered.
    Thanks.
    Fenton

    Ah - alas it sems not to be. I think I am going to have to come up with a different workflow and by extension, solution. My current thinking is that I need to have an input folder for the images to be used in the layout, and an output folder for the results to be saved into, along with the layout.psd (as above) all housed in the same folder. Then I need (help) to write a script that does the following:
    Checks that the layout document is open (that bit is easy enough)
    if(documents.length==0){
       alert("You need to have your layout template open (-layout.psd-)")
    }else{
        // Do next bit here - and what I'm trying to do is described below.
        // Hopefully by typing it out I might start to get it straight in my head
        // Any help with any part of this process is greatluy appreciated
        // I'm trying to learn!
    Then what I think the script needs to do is tocheck the contents of the input folder and find out how many files are in it then set this as a variable, to set the length of a loop, maybe? Or should it load the filenames as an array and work through them sequentially?
    Once that information is established, there is a smart object on the first layer that needs to be updated with the contents of the first file - my thinking s that this is done by the script opening each image, and then copy/pasting into the smart object, merging down (so I don't end up with an enormous multi-layered file). My reason for thinking this would be a good idea would be that I could just run a quick check to make sure that no landscape pics have sneaked in there and if they have, rotate them (which again, is pretty easy as even I could do that bit, too).
    doc = activeDocument;
                if (doc.height < doc.width) {
                  doc.rotateCanvas(90);
                } else {
                  // Carry on
    This will update all of the smart object instances throughout the layout template.
    Then the text underneath the main image needs to be updated with the filename of the file that has been pasted in the smart object, and after that a [flattened] copy saved out to an output folder.
    Rinse and repeat for the remaining images in the input folder.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • File opening as Placed smart object layer, instead of separate file

    how to open an image in photoshop cc like photoshop cs3?
    in cc it is automatically open as smart object on the other photo which is already open..i want to open 2nd image as a different window

    I don't believe there's an option to change whether dropping an image on another image places it as a new layer, no.  I think you'll need to get used to doing things a little differently than you have been.  I'm sorry to have to bear that news, but it only takes a week or two to build new habits.
    This behavior isn't too new, by the way.  I think the "drag to workspace to place file on top of open document" behavior changed back in Photoshop CS5, if memory serves.

  • Placing smart objects from AI to PS and saving as .gif! why not?

    I have created a logo for a friend in illustrator and basically want to save it as a file type that they can place into word documents etc.. So far the best i can do is place as a smart object into photoshop and then save as a jpg, and then i get a background as well as come color distortion (blacks turn to greyish tones).
    Is there a way to save illustrator vector images in a way that does not include a background color and also does not distort the colors?
    thanks for helping a noob!
    see attached if you want to work with my image..

    You can do as Scott suggested but you might actually find another Item in the fie menu will serve you best.
    File>Save for Microsoft Office is set up to optimize the png for use in Office applications best.
    So you should try both and see what you like.
    Even Save for Device and Web offer you the choice to optimize the png, I would choose png 24.
    You should try all three ways, there may no longer be a difference between any of these three options.

  • Smart object layer from PS to AI. how to use??

    I successfully work AI vector objects as placed objects into PS by copy pasting or file/place into a smart object layer in PS, I find value in making changes to my vector object dimensions in AI and seeing them updated in PS,
    but I don`t know how to do it the other way, meaning a PS jpeg on a layer to AI as smart object, I choose an image on its own layer in PSCS4 and convert to smart object, I (right click) export the contents as jpeg smart object, and then back in AI go file/place the smartobject jpeg, when I make changes to the PSsmartobject in PS like colour shift or dimensions change nothing happens in AI,
    I would like to have an image pasted from PS into AI whereby I can change colours and dimensions or add pixels like paint on that smartobject layer in PS and then have it update in AI...

    To my knowledge Illustrator does not support smart objects. However it does support image linking. Which means if you update a image in photoshop, Illustrator will know the file has changed.
    When placing the file, you will see a checkbox at the bottom of the open dialog box for link, make sure it is checked. When you update the file when Illustrator is running with that file opened, you will get a promt telling you the file has changed and asked you if you want to update the image.
    If you choose not to update the image at that time, you can click on the linked file text in the top tool bar and update the image from there.
    If the file is not open or Illustrator is not running then the file will update the next time you open the file.
    Also you will find a edit original button in the top tool bar to take you back to what ever image editor is assigned to that file format.
    To assign a file format to photoshop:
    For this example we will use jpeg extention
    1) Open windows explorer
    2) Menu options tools>folder options>File types tab>scroll to jpeg and click on it
    3) Click the advanced tab
    4) see what actions are listed odds are only open and printo are listed
    5) If Edit is not listed, click on the new button
    6) For the action type EDIT
    7) For the application used to perform action click the browse button
    8) Browse for photoshop.exe
    9) The following should now be in the application used to perform action box:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe" %1
    The above file location is assuming you have CS3 and you used the default installation edit original button in Illustrator and the right mouse button menu in windows explorer will take you to photoshop to edit the file.
    10) After you click OK you will see the new EDIT action in the list
    11) Click OK  and then click close to get out of all the dialog boxes
    The action can be removed at any time or edited to use another application.
