Placing .indd into .indd Document

I have Tool Manuals that I am producing and when I place a .indd file into one of these InDesign documents the formating is not the same size.
I can build two .indd files with the exact same info with the same margins, paragraph styles, etc. in both. But when I place one .indd into the other the placed .indd file is not the same size, it is smaller.
Is there something I'm over looking that makes it not come in the same?
Thanks...

Reading your comment made me see my problem, maybe I was looking at all this to hard or something on Friday.
Thanks for your help...

  • Placing indd spreads into a new file

Hello, im trying to place spreads from one indd document to a new document.  when i click, file, place, then choose the indd document, it only gives me the option to place single pages.  I want to place a spread.  Does anyone know how to do this please?  Penny newton

There's no option that I know of that will place both pages from a spread at the same time, but Scott Zanelli's script is pretty flexible and could work for you, I think, if run twice (once for od pages, once for even). • How to recreate old .indd document into a new one

    Hi there,
Last year I did a catalogue of sportswear products. It contained about 550 items and each cell-item had about 3 images and 5 textframes. Now I am creating a new catalogue, which should contain about 80% of old items. The images & information according to the product will be just the same. The problem is, that it has to have a completely different look {layout & styling, etc.}.
I would like to ask for a master-adwice: Do I have to cut & paste 10 000 times the images & textframes from old INDD file to the new one and restyle & resize & repose all afterwards or is there some sophisticated recipe how to use the computing power of my machine and simple tell the program, that all the textfields in old INDD document styled by "Header 01" should be imported to the textframes styled by "NewHeader 01" in the new INDD document? Or something with Named Ranges:
    Old-INDD > Excel > New-INDD?
I am eager to find the way how to save a week of monkey work of Ctrl+C > V
    Thank you in advance!
I trust in you gus & thank you for your time in advance!

If you delete a used paragraph style, InDesign asks you with what it should be replaced. Is that easy enough? :-)
But you do have to take care to inspect the original style for "based on" features, as well as all other styles that are derived from it.
Are the style changes so big you cannot get away with re-defining the existing one?

  • Placeing INDD files

Is anyone aware of a plugin that allows placing editable INDD files?  The default place only allows editing when you select edit original; however, in our case this results in inefficiencies.  We've developed internal scripts that open the file then selects everything and copy and paste's to the new document; however, this is not ideal either.

    Not quite. Here's an example.
We have several InDesign documents that contain just a simple eps graphic and a textbox.  These are a proximately 2in x 3in.  So they're relatively small.
We wish to place a few of these graphics into another document to be arranged as the user sees fit.  However, upon placing these graphics, they're not 'easily' editable.  I'd like to be able to place these graphics into a document that allows the textbox to be edited without going through the whole 'edit original' options as that changes the placed graphic and the 'template' file.

  • Page numbers from placed indd file not printing

I've created a saddle-stitch booklet 1up in InDesign CS4. I've got auto page numbers on the master page, but when I place it in another InDesign document 2up for proofing, the page numbers are visible, but don't output either to an exported PDF or a PostScript file printed to be Distilled. Please advise.

It's a bug. Anything on the master page of a placed INDD file just
    disappears...not good.

  • [AS CS3] Getting fonts of placed InDd docs (imported pages, or graphics)

I need to get the status of fonts that are in InDd documents placed inside another InDd document. I can see the fonts in the "Find Font" window, and it shows me if the font is OK or missing. How would I get that information via script?
Opening all the child documents is not really an option.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • InDesign CS6 Crashes when updating a placed indd, containing a placed indd

I bright this up about a year ago, and just wanted to try addressing it one more time...
The issue is if you have an inDesign document that contains a placed inDesign document (indd) that also contains a placed indd, if you use the "edit original" feature, inDesign will crash as it attempts to update the changes to the main document after closing and saving.
Now, closing and saving is the key term, as just as I was about to re-present this issue, I discovered a solution/workaround.
In my previous video, and in the one below, when closing the placed indd, I simply click the [x]. inDesign prompts to save, I click [Yes] and then inDesign proceeds to crash.
Additionally, even if you save first, and then close, inDesing will still crash.
However, if you save, and then return to the containing indd, without closing the placed indd, the containing indd will successfully update. You can then close the placed indd without crashing inDesign.

I had this week the same issue on Windows XP and share point. I suppose this was a network problem. Normally I work on a Mac or not on a Windows network and I had never this issue before.

    Hi,
I am not sure if this is a "Master Page since we use a French version (the functionnality is  named "Gabarit" in French), so here is a printscreen which shows what our users try to do:
Immediately after the drop is completed, InDesign shuts down without further notice as described before.
I fully patched one machine to 7.5.3, rebooted it and it still does not work.
I know 2 GB is a little bit short, but since this is currently a corporate standard in my customer's organization, I will need to be sure that this is the direct and only cause before any upgrade request can be made.
    Thank you for your help.

  • How to to print an .indd document with a border around the edge?

I have an Indesign document that I want to print with a slight border around the edge.
I print this after exporting it as a PDF.  But when I choose the various combinations of 'print printer's marks' in the export settings, none of them seem to work.
I want just a simple thin border line around the edge of the document to print.  I don't want the interior body to print (which it sometimes does).
I know this can be done, because on some of my .indd documents it works... but I can't figure out what I did to get it to print that way.
    HELP!
    and thanks....
    jn

Thanks... the visible guides setting change took away the purple interior rectangle.
But it still doesn't print the border outline.
Here in text form is a summary of the .indd file settings that does print a border correctly, as I like it to.
The relevant paragraph under Marks and Bleed has crop marks off... and document bleed settings on.
I wonder what I'm missing?  Sometimes I wished Adobe just used plain english... like 'print border outline of document'!
    Thanks!
    jn

  • SMG file (Solidworks Composer) into Indesign Document

    Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to embed an SMG file into Indesign. I just took a Composer course, and we did it through Microsoft Word very easily through the developer tab and adding a Composer ActiveX contol. This then grabs the entire Composer file, animations and all, and placed it into the Word document, shown below:
My company currently uses Indesign for production guidebooks that show our production staff how to assemble parts on the floor. We are looking at going digital in the near future with these guides, and interactivity would be extremely useful. I have found this forum (Using SolidWorks Composer & InDesign? | SOLIDWORKS Forums) regarding a similar situation, but other than that I am at a loss after hours of trying. Composer has output options to HTML, but I can't seem to get that to embed either.
Please let me know if you need any more information. Please help!
    -Becky

There is no 3D model format that will import directly into Indesign with the expectation of full interactivity. If you choose PDF as a format to distribute manual, then you can import U3D format into Acrobat to have a fully interactive model within the manual. But the 3D model won't go through Indesign. One note, Solidworks can export U3D format. If you choose other formats for the electronic manual, you could have some levels of interactivity with the model. You could rotate the view in SW, export into a image format, create as many views as necessary, then import images into Indesign using Folio Overlays or Object States to accomplish interactive aspect.

  • Reader XI, placing blank page between document pages?

I have Adobe Reader XI, Version 11.0.2.  In the last two weeks one our agents readers started placing a blank page between document pages.  We have re-installed the product a couple time, reset standard defaults, and it is stil placing blank pages between document pages.  Any ideas to rectify the problems.  Every document he pulls up this happens.

Can you give us a link to a document with these pages?
Reader cannot insert pages into a PDF file so something must be up with the PDF's themselves.

  • Suddenly placed EPS images in document won't print

Recently I had to do a clean reinstall of the Mac OS to clear up some problems. I backed up all my files and applications before doing so, so I could move AppleWorks back onto my Mac from the backup.
Now I am trying to print out an existing document from AppleWorks that has two placed EPS images in it. The only thing that prints is some text I have typed directly into the document. The document prints blank where the EPS images are supposed to be.
To narrow down whether it was a problem with my printer or not, I chose the print command and then chose "save as PDF." The resulting PDF file is also blank were the EPS images are supposed to be, seemingly pointing to a problem with AppleWorks. I tried deleting and then reinserting the EPS images but this did not solve the problem.
Thoughts on how I can correct this are appreciated.

Whe you move AppleWorks from one machine to anothe (or back onto the same machine) you need to move the entire AppleWorks 6 folder and all of its contents.
After doing so, you should delete the AppleWorks preferences files. You will need to do this for each user account on the machine.
Go to username > Library > Preferences
Locate and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist
Still in the Preferences folder, locate and open the folder AppleWorks.
From that folder, delete the following files:
    AppleWorks 6 Assistant Prefs
    AppleWorks 6 Assistants Cache
    AppleWorks 6 Preferences
    AppleWorks 6 Translators Cache
If you have made changes to the Button Bar, and have experienced NO problems associated with the Button Bar, it is likely safe to leave the file AppleWorks 6 Button Bars where it is. Otherwise delete it as well.
AppleWorks will create new copies of these files as they are needed.
Then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on your startup drive. You'll find Disk Utility in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.

    Barry

  • Integrating Screenshots into Indesign documents

Hi,I'm an fairly inexperienced indesign user,I'm trying to develop pdfs/e-books which will contain quite a few screenshots unfortunately when placing screenshot images into my documents I lose a lot of resolution and my screenshots end up looking rubbish,I've tried a number of approaches including the following
checking resolution is 300 ppi in photoshop and resizing accordingly
placingimages as .png, .pdf(browser screen capture)
set display to high quality (indesign prefs)
ifanyone has any advice as to what I'm doing incorrectly or could point me at a good resource I'd be delighted
    Thanks
    Carl

    say I have  to resize
There's no problem with resizing, which is what happens when you scale a capture in ID. It's resampling up or down (adding or subtracting pixels) that degrades a capture. The only instance where ID resamples is on export.
You can't get around the screen display quaility of captures. You might be careful to never allow resampling anywhere in the workflow, but when the captures are exported to PDF the appearance will be affected by the reader's magnification setting as the page is scaled up or down.

  • Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong

Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong
I have a 2 Page PDF file from my client which I have to have setup 2UP on 450x320 for Metal Plates for the Press.
I setup my page size in inDesign and Placed each page from the PDF file into the inDesign Document.
Because I need 4 Metal plates (CMYK) I had to check the Colour Seperations for the file by outputting it to a Postscript file with CMYK SEPS and then using Adobe Distiller to turn it into a PDF file for me to view the Seperations.
As I've shown in the screen shot below. The CYAN plate has boxes all around the images in the PDF file which will come out on a Metal Plate.
Compared to the Colour version of the Client's PDF they supplied me, there is no boxes around the images.
I know this is a error with dropping a PDF file into inDesign, outputting to a PS file and then Distilling it to the SEPS. I've had the same problem when I've opened a PDF file that has been distilled in Illustrator and the Artwork is sliced into pieces and uneditable.
Has anyone else found this problem and if so is there a workaround?
I'm using Adobe inDesign CS and Adobe Acrobat Professional Version 5.

Im facing a similar kind of problem. I want to store and retrieve Office files, PDF and Jpegs into/from the database to view them on web in disconnected mode. Please reply as I cant find any help/documentation regarding saving BLOB data into files. I was able to store file data into BLOB, using DBMS_LOB package.
