Placing MS Word to InDesign CS4

Products:
Windows 7
InDesign CS4 x64
Word 2007
Problem:
Hyphenation and Align to Baseline Grid commands do not remain set if the ID document is saved, closed, and re-opened.
Description:
I've placed a Word doc into an InDesign doc with reasonable trouble, but have now encountered something that I have been unable to find a solution to fix. I will close the Word doc, place it into InDesign, make some changes to the formatting of the text, save changes, close the InDesign doc, re-open the InDesign doc, and two commands in particular did not keep during the save: removing the hyphenation toggle and align with baseline grid.
The hyphenation toggle and align to baseline grid are located in the paragraph module. I have unchecked the hyphenate command, selected align to grid, saved the doc, but they do not keep.
How can I get these two commands to remain set so that I do not have to reset them each time I open the ID document?
Thanks

You seem to have this solved, but in case you don't know, there is a hierarchy to settings and how they apply. With something selected, the settings apply only to the selection. In a document with nothing selected, new settings become the default for the document, but don't affect existing content unless you change it. With no documents open, new settings become application defaults for new work, but don't affect existing documents.

  • Placing PSD files in Indesign CS4 error message

I recently upgraded at work to CS4 and leopard. Here is my problem everytime I try to place a photoshop file off of my network filesever I recieve this error "This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it." This happens with every psd that I try to place and I know that these files are not use. The photoshop files are CS3 files. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance!

I just experienced the same situation with a client's network, the main difference was CS3 and OS 10.5.6. The situation arose after installation of Leopard and subsequent software updates. l believe the IT person who did the updates used migration, but I'm not positive about that.
Anyway, here's how I solved it: As a test, create a new user in System Preferences/Accounts (call the new user Test User) and give it admin privileges. Log in as testuser. Connect to your server. Open InDesign, create a new document, and try to place a tiff or psd file from the server into the new document. If this works, you've isolated the problem to your normal (previous) user account.
If this is indeed the problem, while logged in as testuser, click the padlock in System Preferences/Accounts, enter your password, and proceed to delete the corrupted account...
It will give you 3 options: pick the first one, which is delete user and archive user folder as a disk image within a folder named Deleted Users.
Now you can create a new user (you can name the new one the same as you had for the old corrupted one), give it admin privileges. Log out of test user and log back in with the new user you just created.
You can now open up the old user disk image in the Deleted Users folder, and drag items back into the new user folder you've just created. I would only drag the contents of Music, Pictures and Movies at this point.
    Important:
Do not drag the contents of your Users/olduser/Library folder into you new user folder. More than likely this contains the source of the problems that got you into this trouble in the first place.
The biggest pain about this process is recreating your font lists/locations. If you use Suitcase Fusion, open Suitcase first, then drag your favorite fonts into Suitcase. If you use another font manager, you're going to have to recreate your font list as you did the first time you installed them.
When you open each of your regularly used programs, they will act as if you're opening them for the first time (with the exception of asking for serial number/registration info), and new preferences will be created in your User/~/Library/Preferences folder.
    Good luck,

  • Dirty tiff display in InDesign CS4

    Hi there,
I have built a number of simple images (rings with solid colour, solid colour with a gradient effect applied etc.) in Photoshop Extended CS4 and then saved them as tiff images at 300 ppi CMYK/16bit files. I have then placed them in an InDesign CS4 document and they have come up with yellow pixels. I have noticed that when I scroll through the document that the areas I'm scrolling into come up a similar colour until I stop scrolling and my machine catches up. I have ensured that my display in preferences is set to the highest setting and still the image is dirty.
Can anyone help out a novice please?
    Cheers,
    Philamon

You'll do yourself a favor if you convert those TIFFs from 16-bit to 8-bit before opening them in InDesign. InDesign can only handle 8-bits of those file. I'm not sure how it handles 16-bit TIFFs but for 16-bit PSD files it reads the 8-bit composite saved with the file.
Your files will be considerably smaller, and will preview better.
The value of 16-bit is in making image adjustments BEFORE saving the file for other applications.

  • Script for soft kinsoku override in InDesign CS4?

I have a javascript for the soft kinsoku override for IDCS5.5 but not for ID4. Can someone please post the .jsx? Thanks!

I've should have been more specific...I've imported text from Word to InDesign CS4. I didn't realize the paragraph style had the Kinsoku: Soft kinsoku attached to it until I'd already formatted much of the 400 page book (there's a plus sign next to my TXT paragraph style because of this). I have character styling within the paragraphs and don't want to option click the style to remove the Kinsoku. Isn't there a java script available that I can run on the whole InDesign CS4 document that will clear this out. I found one online for InDesign CS5 but not for CS4. I do not know how to write scripts. Thanks!

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when placing Word document

    Hi,
I'm having a real problem placing a Word document into InDesign CS4. It crashes every time! I have found that if I disable the "import inline graphics" it successfully places the document. but enabling that option crashes InDesign.
I've tried saving as RTF, and even doing a simple copy-paste but the result is the same: InDesign crashes.
If you have an idea please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Ariel

Yes sir! The Word file that crashes CS4 is placed successfully in CS2. The saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind!
The only disadvantage is that each chapter is a separate file and in CS2 these need to be placed separately, whereas in CS4 (if it worked ;-)) they could all be placed in one go.
    Thanks Jongware,
    Ariel

  • InDesign CS4 - placing Word document and style mapping

    Hi,
I'm using InDesign CS4 on Windows XP (SP3). I've noticed that when I place Word document, do the style mapping and saving this as a preset ... mentioned preset does not save style mapping. It works for the first time but when I try another place with the same preset - it fails.
    Example:
    Heading 1 => InDesign_heading 1
    Heading 2 => InDesign_heading 2
    etc.
    becomes
    Heading 1 => Heading 1
    Heading 2 => Heading 2
    etc.
Any help would be much thankful.

  • Can't Place a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4

I'm trying to use the Place command to bring the text from a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4.
I've successfully brought in several Word 2010 documents (docx extention) to InDesign CS4 documents using the place command.
I have one specific 30 page document (which is no loarger than others which have been successful), and when I use the place command with this file, nothing happens (and no text gets loaded onto the cursor for placement.
I've tried re-saving the word doc, even pasted its contents into a new Word doc and still can't get the Place command to work.
THere's nothing particularly unique about the file - doesn't have any odd embedded content, just a 30 page text document writtin in word.
Any ideas what could be going wrong or how to fix it?
I've tried restarting both Word and InDesign without any change (and the rest of my word files can be Placed without problem, so I imagine it's something specific to that file.
NOTE - re-saving in RTF format lets the Place command work but leaves a bunch of empty squares/boxes (not sure if these were for tabs or empty spaces or what really??)
Can work around this for now, but would like to know how to get the place command working with decent size Word Docs( docx for word 2010 if that matters).
    Thanks for any help.

It turned out that for at least one particular document the OP had used some blank paragraphs as spacers at the start of the text, and that the style assigned to the second paragraph used a combination of left and right paragraph indents that was more than the width of the document page, sending the entire document (except for the empty first paragraph) into overset. I can't say for sure, but I think the Word styles might have been mapped to ID styles because I found no trace of the indents in the Word file itself, only in the ID document, and I had no trouble placing that Word file in my own ID test document. I did have some trouble placing another .docx file supplied by the OP in CS4, but not in later versions, and conversion to .doc solved that problem.

  • What is the best way to work with Word documents in The InDesign CS4???

I work in Microsoft Word 2007 and all my documents have *.doc format.
What is the best way to work with Word documents in InDesign CS4???
David Blatner says to avoid copying and pasting text from Word instead of placing it (Ctrl+D).
How about pasting RTF or Text Document???
I want to make book's layout in ID CS4 and its main feature is that there is the left page with text and the right - with graphics.
So, as I understand to place the text on each page I must create for example 70 Word documents and place each item on 70 left pages???
It loks like wasting time. I sthere another way of making such layout???  What kind????

It's best to place any text.
You can have all of your text in one file and use auto-flow to add threaded text frames and pages as required (Hold down the Shift key when you click the loaded text cursor), but it's a little non-standard to have the thread only on one side of the spread from the auto-flow perspective, so you'll have to set up properly.
This is one case where a master text frame will work to your advantage. On your master page spread, add a text frame to the left page, but not to the right (or at least not threaded to one on the right -- for some other project you might actually want two independent text threads). Hold the loaded cursor over a frame on the left side of a document page and auto-flow. ID will add new spreads as necessary, but only put the text on the left side.

  • Opening Word docs in InDesign CS4 (Mac)

    Hello everyone.
This is my first time asking for help from this forum.
I have just upgraded to CS4 from CS2 (Mac) and I have been having numerous issues with Word and InDesign. When I try downloading a fairly complicated Word file into InDesign CS4 it crashes. But, if I open it in InDesign CS2, it opens fine. I then take the ID CS2 file and reopen it in InDesign CS4 and it works. Though this maybe a good workaround, it isn't something I can be doing all the time, its way too time consuming. Does anyone have an idea what the problem is? Or, what I can do about it?
As a note: I have also just upgraded my systems to Mac Pros and iMacs with Leopard on it.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. I am placing the file.
I'll try posting this to the ID forum.
    Thanks for the quick response.

  • Opening Word docs in InDesign CS4 (Mac). It keeps crashing.

Thanks for the info. I have had this file opened in lower versions of CS with no issues. It seems like every few files this is happening to. All my current systems have two gigs of Ram.
I was suspecting (dreading) that it may be a font conflict. I know the system fonts (dfonts) have been somewhat an issue in previous versions of CS, but I never had crashes to InDesign before because of font conflicts. I will try sorting through my fonts and breaking-up the file.
Thanks again for your guys help. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

  • When importing from a Word document placing the text in InDesign

When importing from a Word document placing the text in InDesign I can only see the text from the first page of the Word document. I have increased the number of pages in the Indesign document to more than what is in the Word document, still only text from the first page is shown. What am I doing wrong or did I not set a setting correctly?

When you want to auto flow text while placing, hold down the Shift key when clicking with the Place cursor on the first page. New pages will be generated and text will be auto flowed using the margins set up on the master page.

  • Placed PDF made in Quark bug, InDesign CS4 XP

    Hi,
I've just been bitten by the bug that causes characters to drop out when you create a PDF from an InDesign CS4 document that has a placed PDF made in Quark.
Has it been resolved? I looked at the update notes to 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 and couldn't see anything about it.
This is fairly urgent for me. If it hasn't been resolved, are there any workarounds?
    Thank you,
    Ariel

You may be right... but it didn't seem relevant at the time, since I rarely receive Quark files, so I probably phased out.
Anyway, the 6.0.2 for InDesign CS4ME does not fix the issue. I thought it might. And what a story it was to upgrade (which I just did this evening). Apparently, the 6.0.2 upgrade only works for a later build of IDCS4 (something like 6.0.0.421). I had the earlier build (something like 6.0.0.270). And the only solution was to completely uninstall InDesign, download the latest Demo on the Winsoft site (800MB. Took me around 2 hours). Install that. Then download the update and install that as well.
And it didn't even fix the issue!
The only positive side is that all my preferences survived the trauma intact!

  • Indesign CS4 freezes when copying text to Word 2007

I have a user that copies text from Indesign CS4 to Word 2007 documents.  She has Word 2007 open, then opens an InDesign file and copies the text.  She then clicks on the Word document and pastes the copied text.
She is unable to go back to the Indesign file.  Clicking on InDesign on the toolbar does not activate the InDesign window.  The only open she has is to right-click and close InDesign.
She has been doing this without any problems until approximately three weeks ago.
Is this a known problem?  What is causing the conflict?

The OS is XP SP3.  We are using Adobe Type Manager with Adobe fonts.  The only other application running was Outlook 2007.
The user is out today but I will check if Alt Tab will cycle back.

  • Indesign CS4 won't retain passwords for placed PDFs

    Hi,
I've just upgraded to CS4 from CS2 and I'm having a problem with placed PDF files with password protection.
I wonder if anyone knows why CS4 seems unable to retain passwords for secure PDF files that I have previously placed. Every time I open a document CS4 brings up a 'PDF security password' dialog and I have to enter the password for every placed secure PDF file in the document – no matter how many times I input the passwords and save the document it still happens.
I never encountered this problem in CS2, all I used to do was place a PDF, enter the password for the secure file and then the next time I opened the document with the placed PDFs it would just open without being prompted for the passwords – CS2 just 'remembered' them or something.
There's probably a setting for this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it, so any help with this would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Thanks for your replies guys, I think that a little more information about what I'm doing might help you understand my situation.
I am the creator of the PDFs, which are adverts, and these are secured with only one password (for permissions) in my workflow to allow them to be proofed to the client (but to prevent them from being passed on and subsequently altered by third parties.) The adverts are subsequently placed into an InDesign document for a publication which I solely produce.
Previously, when placing these files in InDesign CS2 you only had to enter the permissions password once to place the file and from then on InDesign CS2 did not require the password to be entered again even if you closed the document and re-opened it (unless the artwork had been modified).
I've been using CS2 with this workflow for years and there's never been a problem with my PDFs – not event at the pre-press stage as I generate a high res PDF file for the entire publication and upload this to repro with whom I have a close working relationship and I'm certain that they would have informed me of any problems. Although I think that the final PDF would not be affected by passworded files?
I quite agree, I wouldn't expect someone else to place a file that required a password to do so – but that's not the case here. I'd like to understand why CS4 (and interestingly it seems CS3) doesn't retain the permissions password after it has been entered in the first instance – in the same way that CS2 did. It's inconvenient to have to enter it for each advert in the document every time I re-open it.
Yes, I could remove the security, but for me, that seems to defeat the object of being able to generate just one PDF file in the first place to use in my workflow.
