Placing Musical Notation in CS5.5

I am running CS5.5
On the rare occasions in that past when I have needed musical notation, it was generated in another program and then scanned and placed as a graphic file in Pagemaker. Is there a better way to do this in ID?

I worked for a music publisher for around 9 years, and we used mostly used Finale, but also Sibelius, Encore, Score and TablEdit (the last 3 only infrequently). Each of these worked the same in regard to page layout apps like InDesign and QuarkXPress. All of them could output one or more graphic formats that could be placed into a page layout app as a static graphic. They couldn't be flowed dynamically the way you describe. If you needed 4 measures in the second system, you had to set that in the music notation program, export again as a grapic and update the link in ID/Quark, the way you describe your program works. You might run across someone on this forum who also works in music notation, but there probably are fewer of them than would be helpful. You could ask at the forums of other music notation programs, but I doubt the companies would want their users to recommend other programs. That said, I'm not sure such a program exists, so it's probably no foul to try.
If you stick with a static graphic format, I'd recommend PDF, but if you are going to be sending to a print provider, I'd send them a test file in advance of your print date so they can identify any problems they may have to deal with, so they can know what steps to take. Some programs PDFs aren't as good as others.

  • I'm looking for a text/music notation app

I am a drummer in a cover band who would like to use my iPad for my shorthand version of drum charts.  What I currently have is a paper notebook, in which I have dedicated a page for each set.  On each page, I have the song title, then the main drum beat(s) (written in musical notation), followed by any notes regarding arrangement, tempo, etc.  All of this is condensed down into a couple of lines, so I can fit about 10 songs on each sheet of paper.  I could scan in what I have now and view it that way, but I would rather have clear and editable digital based notation and text.  Does anything like this exist, not for composing and arranging orchestral pieces, but for simply inserting a bar or 2 of music into some text?
    In other words:
Locked Out Of Heaven    I------------------------------------I   Intro/V/PC/C/V/C etc...        120 bpm
                                         I---Musical notation---------I
                                         I------------------------------------I
                                         I------------------------------------I

If Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver does not work, then it is unlikely iBooks will do text to speach on its own in the current version.
    <http://www.apple.com/feedback>
I know that some competing services, Kindle, Nook, etc... are restricted in doing text to speach by the book publishers.
If this is text in a PDF (not an ebook), then maybe there is another app that can to text to speach on PDFs.
If it is published books that are of interest, there is Audible.com <http://www.audible.com/>
In theory it should be possible to use the Mac OS X Text to Speach facilities to convert a document into an audio file, and they sync that to the iPod Touch.  I assume there is similar text to speach utilities for Windows systems.
I'm also guessing that there are web sites dedicated to assisting sight impaired individuals that might provide ideas for getting text to speach options for the iPod Touch.

  • How can I insert an interactive musical notation fragment in iBooks Author?

I would like to insert an interactive fragment of musical notation in iBooks Author, just to illustrate a short melody or a few chords.

Keynote cant hyperlink within the same slide to another object. Interactive presentations must use multiple slides.
Create the presentation as described above and use the same background on each slide using the slide master, this will provide the look that you want of staying on the same page.
Create a return button on every slide so you can navigate to a previous slide.

  • Music Notation on Logic Pro

Can Logic Pro use musical notation or is there better software for this purpose? I would like something quite complex so it might be able to make ochestral scores.

i have done really complex scores in logic, though it does stumble in some spots and is a touch buggy.
    check out: http://www.stevenson.homechoice.co.uk/documents/LogicProScoreRequests.pdf

  • Music Notation in java

hiya. I just wanted to know what processes would be involved in writing my own music notation UI, would it be done using a canvas? Somewhere you could edit and playback etc...I want to have a lot of control over the layout and style.
    Thanks!

DoriNot to put you down, but if your have to ask such a thing, you are not ready to create such an application. I recommend doing some basic tutorials first*.
Whatever you decide, best of luck.

  • How good is the music notation facility in Logic Express 9?

The music notation feature in GarageBand is frustratingly inadequate. For instance, using a piano keyboard it is impossible - as far as I can tell - to show notes below middle C as being played by the right hand. This means that some very basic chords appear in the notation as being physically impossible to play. For instance, if I play C1 & E2 in the left hand and G2, C3 And E3 in the right, the music notation shows the left hand as C1, E2 and G2. I can't stretch that far!
If I upgrade from GarageBand to Logic Express 9, will the music notation facility enable me to print what I play?

Not without a lot of trouble, and not in an easily readable way. E.g., if you put a quaver over two semiquavers (thats an eighth over two sixteenths), the quaver will be split in two, so you'll see 4 semiquavers, two of which are bound. Changing a note's staff is possible, but can lead to ugly results. Logic Express (and I think Pro too) doesn't have a ready-to-print scoring facility.
I can advise you to use Logic for recording. There you can edit it until all the notes are correct, and then export the midi file to e.g. the freeware MuseScore. That gives you great control over the score. If that doesn't suit you, you'll have to move on to Finale, Sibelius, Overture, ...

  • Music notation inaccurate and/or missing notes

I connected my Yamaha keyboard to my iMac via MIDI cables and was able to record a track in GarageBand by playing directly on my Yamaha keyboard. However, when I play back the recording and open the music notation view, the notes shown on the staff are either wrongly notated and/or missing. For example, a quarter note followed by 2 eighth notes are shown as a triplet! I was definitely NOT playing it as a triplet and it doesn't sound like a triple on playback, yet it is displayed as a triplet. Also, when I arpeggiate a chord which is held for a quarter note length, it is displayed as a quarter note block chord with MISSING notes, but yet you can HEAR ALL the correct notes in the arpeggiation during playback. What can I do to make GarageBand notate more accurately and display every note it is playing, that is, if you can HEAR the note being played, it must SHOW it on the staff. Please help!

Yes, of course. Logic Express 8 has the same notation features as Logic Pro 8 which is used by professional composers. You can download the pdf manuals from Apple's website.

  • Left Hand/Right Hand Separation in Music Notation

I'm new to GarageBand and am wondering if there is anyway to separate the right hand from the left hand part in music notation. I recorded some piano music into GarageBand using a midi keyboard but the right and left hand parts are sometimes combined. Is there any way to change the direction of the stems for individual notes to separate the right and left hand parts? Thanks!!

I too am new to GB and am somewhat disappointed with the Notation programme. Is there no way that, for instance, notes below middle C can be shown in the treble clef? If not, GB's Music Notation format is of no use to keyboard players as it will show chords - particularly in the left hand - that are physically impossible to play! Is there no way of moving notes between clefs?

  • Music notation book? Possible or not?

I have a book to sell that is pure music notation. I can export it to a pdf, but it is still NOT text.
Is this possible to create in an iBook format?
I also want people to be able to print the entire thing or pages they select.

  • Music notation lines disappear - PPro CS4 interlace?

I am editing footage to include music notation added on top of video footage. - ie 5 horizontal lines with music on them. Imported as screen grabs.
Footage is fine, and the music images are fine.
As I position them on my window, I start losing the notation lines. Some become grey and indestinct, others get bold.
I have been moving the vertical position in the 'motion effects and they return - but never all 5 lines, and not as clear as I can see them in the source viewer.
I have also been creating a 'bevel edge' letterbox round them, and it also makes the lines disappear.
I assumed it was a interlace issue, and have selected deinterlace on the drop menu for the images, but nothing really changes.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks,
    Don

Post a screen shot or two?  Maybe that will help give someone an idea.
I wonder if this is the classic problem of thin horizontal lines and interlacing.  Are the lines with the interlacing exactly horizontal, angled, or curved?
Another way of ruling this out: what is the pixel thickness of the lines that are showing the problem?

  • Music notation wont appear in preview to printing ?

Using garageband 08 is great, plugged in keyboard, played and recorded music. I can view the music notation and edit it. But when I select the track and try to print preview all I get is blank pdf pages and nothing will print. I watch the tutorials and think i'm doing everything right.
    Any Ideas?

Thanks I had already tried the permisions and upgrading to 10.5.3, so now I've deleted the preferences and it still wont work. I've noticed that when I select the named track preview calls it 'preview of "unnamed document".pdf' as if it's not recognising it, I select the track by clicking on the title which is named . It must be something simple or others would have had this problem, I trawled through other posts but couldn't find any.

  • Writing Musical Notation in GarageBand..?

    Hi!
I am relatively new to GarageBand. I don't know how to play the piano, but can write music. I know there is a musical notation view in GarageBand, and see a pull-down menu of notes, but don't know how to add them to the bar. I know I'm probably missing something small Can anyone help me? Thanks!
