Placing PSD file as a button

When I try and place a Photoshop file (made with normal and rollover layers) as a button in a Muse document, I get an error message: "Cannot place file. File was saved with compatibility turned off". Ive resaved the file from Photoshop after checking to see that the "Maximize Compatibility" pref. is selected but I keep getting the error message. I used to be able to do thid in older versions of Muse.

"I've usually start out 8" x 10" 72 dpi and save it as psd.  When I do a "Save As" to jpg and reopen that file the file has converted to 240 dpi and 2" by 3"." is what you wrote.
Then something you did or used during you post processing  cropped your  4:5 aspect ratio image's  576 px by 720 px to a  2:3 Aspect Ratio image reducing the pixels to 480PX by 720 Px  and change its DPI resolution to 240DPI,   Something you did cropped your original 4:5 aspect ratio image to a 2:3 aspect ratio image its height is still the original 720Px High but the width  has been reduced by 96 px  its now 480Px wide.
Photoshop does not crop and change a documents dpi resolution on it own but it does have features that can be used to do that.
DPI is just a setting its the pixels involved that matter.

  • Problem placing PSD file in Illustrator

    G'day,
My problem is when i place PSD file into illustrator, it opens up "Photoshop Import Option" menu,
    which lets me choose either:
    (1) convert photoshop layers to objects (or)
    (2) Flatten photoshop layers to a single image
all other options are greyed out (meaning i cannot select them)
The above 2 options will embed the image into illustrator, thus when i update in photoshop, they will not auto update.
I dont have this problem in the past (which means i dont get this menu when i use the place function) but it just poped up the last week.
But when i open OLD illustrator files which have PSD images not embeded, i am able to edit the PSD and illustrator will auto update.
Please help it is really frustrating to keep placing PSD files everytime when i have changes.
    Thanks!

    Hi Steve,
May i know what is the place dialogue box are you referring to?
The Place dialogue box that i get (when i press file>place) is the image below:
As you can see i dont have any "link" button to check or uncheck. I can either flatten the psd or convert to object.
My Problem is I would really like to link back the psd file for easy updates but i am not able to.
    Pls help thx!~

  • Illustrator cs3 will not show placed .psd files

I changed my computer to a vista based operating system and installed my creative suite 3. Everything was working fine but recently I am having challenges getting illustrator cs3 to show placed .PSD files. They appear to import but do not display. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be helpful. I already tried a repair/reinstall of illustrator but that did not work. I can place .psd images into In Design so I am not sure why illutrator is not allowing .PSD files to import and display.

    Harron K. Appleman wrote:
Did you upgrade to 64-bit Vista by any chance?
Are your PSD images 16-bit by any chance?
The problem with this scenario is that since Illustrator, any version does not support 16 bit psd files and CS 3 and 4 will place the file anyway but give you a notice that it is placing it as 8 bit. So unless there is something about  Vista XP or W7 64 bit that prevents Illustrator fro converting then that is probably not the issue. And though the warning says it flattens it will preserve a transparent background.
So it might be a different issue.

  • Placed PSD file has Jagged Edge

    Products:
    PS CC
    AI CC
I have a 2500 x 4088 px PSD file with no jagged edges, until it is placed into Illustrator.
I believe that I have placed the PSD file in its original size, but may be wrong. My artboard was created to be larger than the original image, and when placing the file I simply clicked on the artboard.
I have not knowingly increased or reduced the dimensions of the placed file.
Will the jagged edge be present if I place the AI file into InDesign?
Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change to remove the jagged edge?
    Thanks

    Hi John, thank you.
I verified that the anti-alias box was checked, and it was. I usually do not print, so your suggestion was well taken. When the document printed, the lines were as smooth as I expected them to be.
A few days ago when troubleshooting my Windows 8 system, it recommeneded that I perform a Refresh -- so I did. It notified me that it would keep all files and I thought nothing more of it, but learned that the refresh deletes all installed programs. I had to reinstall all Adobe products (among others).
After the re-install I created the attached image. There was a version of the same size that I created before the refresh, and when I placed that image into Illustrator, it appeared smooth with no jagged images.
I don't know why the jagged edges are present on the screen, but ultimately it's the print version that matters (save as to web produced smooth edges, too).
Thank you for your response, it was very helpful.

  • Colour shift when placing PSD files into illustrator

    Hi there
I have tested this issue on CS 3,4 and 5.
bascially if I create a CMYK document with a colour image and save this down as a psd file with the coated Fogra 39 embedded in it. If I create a new file within Illustrator with the same colur management and place the psd file into the document and check the link option (so it is a linked file), the colour shifts when using the colour picker. If I print the document from each APP they visually look different as well.
If I place the psd into illustrator without selecting the link option the colour has the same CMYK values as the psd within Photoshop and also prints correctly.
i can only assume that there is an option somewhere in regards to the "link" option and how this changes tha colour values somewhere? If not is there anyway I can get around this issue so I can use linked files without the CMYK values changing?
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

    Hi guys
    Thanks for the responses.
I use bridge to blanket the colour settings so this i feel this is not the issue here. If you have a moment and would kindly create a colour tint within PS of what ever colour, save this down as any format and place this into illustrator with the link checkbox checked you will see the colour data has physically changed for the CMYK values. This results in the prints looking different as well. If you deselct the link check box when placing the file the CMYK values are the same.
I tried the overprint preview option. This changes the viewable colour on screen but not the CMYK data of the file.
There seems to be a fundamental floor with this link option for some reason.
I might have phone Adobe direct for this iisue as I cannot find a fix for this.
    Many thanks

  • Placing PSD files in Indesign CS4 error message

I recently upgraded at work to CS4 and leopard. Here is my problem everytime I try to place a photoshop file off of my network filesever I recieve this error "This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it." This happens with every psd that I try to place and I know that these files are not use. The photoshop files are CS3 files. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance!

I just experienced the same situation with a client's network, the main difference was CS3 and OS 10.5.6. The situation arose after installation of Leopard and subsequent software updates. l believe the IT person who did the updates used migration, but I'm not positive about that.
Anyway, here's how I solved it: As a test, create a new user in System Preferences/Accounts (call the new user Test User) and give it admin privileges. Log in as testuser. Connect to your server. Open InDesign, create a new document, and try to place a tiff or psd file from the server into the new document. If this works, you've isolated the problem to your normal (previous) user account.
If this is indeed the problem, while logged in as testuser, click the padlock in System Preferences/Accounts, enter your password, and proceed to delete the corrupted account...
It will give you 3 options: pick the first one, which is delete user and archive user folder as a disk image within a folder named Deleted Users.
Now you can create a new user (you can name the new one the same as you had for the old corrupted one), give it admin privileges. Log out of test user and log back in with the new user you just created.
You can now open up the old user disk image in the Deleted Users folder, and drag items back into the new user folder you've just created. I would only drag the contents of Music, Pictures and Movies at this point.
    Important:
Do not drag the contents of your Users/olduser/Library folder into you new user folder. More than likely this contains the source of the problems that got you into this trouble in the first place.
The biggest pain about this process is recreating your font lists/locations. If you use Suitcase Fusion, open Suitcase first, then drag your favorite fonts into Suitcase. If you use another font manager, you're going to have to recreate your font list as you did the first time you installed them.
When you open each of your regularly used programs, they will act as if you're opening them for the first time (with the exception of asking for serial number/registration info), and new preferences will be created in your User/~/Library/Preferences folder.
    Good luck,

  • Placed PSD files are grainy

    This is a recent occurence.
I always place PSD files into InDesign docs so I can just click to edit. But recently, the images are very noisy/grainy, even though they are not in Photoshop. Print quality is terrible...these are high resolution, edited images.
When I save the PSD files as max JPGs and place them into InDesign, the images are beautiful again.
I've been doing this forever without issue. Current setup is Creative Suite Design Pro CS5.5--I also use LightRoom before exporting to Photoshop for final editing.
The images are beautiful in Photoshop, whether PSD or JPG. And half of the images on the InDesign page are PSD and they are great, too.
But a few of the PSD files are awful--when I replace them with JPGs they're fine.
Any idea what's happening? For years, this has been a tried and true workflow for me.
    Thanks in advance.

I switch back and forth from high to typical. The other photos look great, as do these once I replace the psds with jpgs.

  • Placing PSD Files in ID3 & Maintaining Pantones

What I am trying to do might not be possible (or it might be really easy!), but I can't find any clear answers so I hope someone can help me!
Sort of an involved back-story, but I figure that will help me get the best solution!
I am trying to place a logo that utilizes the PS bevel/emboss effect into an ID document. The logo is a vector created in AI assigned with the correct PMS color, and placed in PS as a Smart Object.
My original problem was that I could not recreate the same bevel look in InDesign, or Illustrator as I can in Photoshop, to use it in the InDesign document.
My problem now is that I can't figure out how to assign the Pantone value to the logo either in PS before I place it in ID, or in ID once I've placed it. It always converts to CMYK and I need to make this document a 3-color piece for printing.
Also, here is something weird that happened. When I made the logo a monotone and imported it, the second I placed it in ID, everything disappears. The elements are still there, but they aren't visible, and don't print. The second I delete the logo, everything reappears. Very weird.
    Thanks for any advice!!

Photoshop only supports Pantone Spot colors when you work in a multi-channel mode or create a special spot channel. My guess is you will need to create the spot channel, then import the path and fill with black (or gray, for a tint) in the channel. This is not intuitive and can be very disconcerting.
I have no idea how spot channels work in conjunction with effects, so you're on your own to try that out. I'm surprised you say you can't get your effect in illustrator or ID.
I'm afraid I have no idea what's causing the other problem. Can you package, zip, and put the file on a server somewhere, then post a link here?

  • Why can't Illustrator CS6/CC place PSD files properly?

I have been using Adobe products for over 15 years and one of the main features I use is placing PSD files within Illustrator and then creating my text so that is remains vector. Being a recent Creative Cloud Team member and seeing that both CS6 and CC do not allow a user to place a PSD inside of Illustrator without drastically reducing the image baffles me!!!
For example create a 500x500 pixel 300dpi document in Photoshop and save as PSD. Then open Illustrator and create a document the EXACT SAME SIZE. Go to file place and try to place the PSD you just created. Notice that it will not place at the correct size???
I don't see how this big of an oversight can be overlooked. I have also noticed that when using the PANTONE Solid Color palette within Illustrators Color Books, with persistence turned on also still does not work. This has been a problem I have noticed for over 5 years!!! Even with workspaces saved this problem persist to this day.
I am on a BRAND NEW iMac out of the box so it is not a computer or user issue.
Can someone please help me with a solution to the above issues. As a Creative Director for a marketing and advertising agency I don't see how these two issues have not perplexed others as they both are part of my day to day work flow and are now hendering how I perform my daily job as a designer.
Any solutions or tips or tricks to eliminate the above mentioned issues are greatly appreciated.

you are correct by stating that the file will open, but if you go to document setup and then go to edit art boards you can see that the image size is actually much smaller than the original that you created. this is a major bug as i create a lot of my dynamic backgrounds in photoshop and then place them in illustrator to do my typography. i have been using photoshop and illustrator for over 15 years so i can not see them deleting this feature or overlooking the fact that it does not work, but then again who knows!!! they did in fact delete the AOM from Bridge which was the one main feature that i used and loved about the program. for products with this price range i can not see why they would delete such a vital feature to the program.
again just looking for a solution and i appreciate your quick response to this. hopefully we will start something that adobe will actually see and help us out with. it has slowed my production within the programs down to a sluggish crawl

  • CS4 Cannot place PSD files in Yosomite

Like a LOT of other users, I am working using CS4, a great package and I have always been happy with it and very stable,
and I do not want to update to CS6 as cost is an issue.
Please can anyone answer the question of how to fix the problem of not being able to place psd files in Illustrator as this is causing me
no end of problems with my work.
    HELP..............................

Why don't you look into subscribing to Adobe's Creative Cloud? Much less expensive, in the long run, than simply buying a CS6 suite any longer. I had a CS6 suite and, for the first year, only paid $30 a month for a subscription to CC but now I'm paying $50 a month. I still find that price cheaper than purchasing software that will lack the features of the 'newest' products.
No problem placing PSD files into Illustrator dose with the CC versions!

  • I request capability to add either LINKED or embedded graphics to Muse (either AI or PSD files)

I notice there is no way to place a linked PhotoShop (PSD) file in Muse.   In comparison, PhotoShop now has the capability of placing both embedded and/or linked files (including AI files) within PSD files.  I am request this feature in Muse as well.  Ultimately I would love to place either embedded or linke vector (AI) files in Muse, but the best I can do for now is place a PSD file which is linked to an AI file, into Muse.  I was hoping to be able to make changes to the original AI file which would automatically update the PSD file to which it is linked which in turn would update the PSD file placed onto my Muse page, but it did not work.  It does not appear to work because the placed PSD file (onto the Muse page) is embedded into the Muse page, and there no longer is any kind of link between the original PSD file and the version placed on the Muse page.  Help me Adobe, I can't believe what I am asking would be difficult to pull off, and you already offer this feature in PhotoShop.  The capability I am requesting would greatly enhance the power and elagance of the Muse program.  By the way, I believe Muse is a fantastic product, and just what I have been waiting for for the last several years.

Yeah, I know that changing the mode results in different colors. I just switched back and forth to check out what's going on.
For CMYK I'm using ECI profiles which are common in Europe and for RGB the normal Adobe RGB 1998 profile. The profiles are synced between all Creative Suite products. I tried sRGB and some of the default profiles which shipped with CS5 but it produces the same result. I also deleted my whole Illustrator profile but without success.
My graphics card doesn't have any updates. But it would be very unlikely anyway that both drivers for both cards had the same issue. If it has something to do with my graphics cards it's more likely the switchable graphics in general.

  • How to convert a .psd file into .ai (adobe illustrator)

    Hi Guys,
I have a very high quality multi layer .psd file that I need to convert to adobe illustrator in order to export them into autocad.
As I'm very in exprienced, Ive tried to merge the layers in the psd file and then use Export -> 'Path to Illustrator', however when I open the newly created .ai file, it open a dialog box called 'Convert to Artboards' and whatever option i choose (either Legacy Artboard or Crop Area(s)' my new illustrator file seems to be empty.
I appreciate any file anyone can offfer.

    Importing PSD files into Illustrator
       •   Opening PSD files into Illustrator
    1.  Turn on your computer and launch the Illustrator program.
    2.  Open a new document by clicking File>New in Illustrator’s menu bar.
    3.  To open your Photoshop document, go to File>Open and then select the document you want to open when prompted.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Editable)
This method is ideal if you wish to incorporate a Photoshop document within an existing Illustrator document which can then make the PSD file editable within Illustrator.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click “Place”. Make sure the “Link” option is not selected.
Placing or opening an unlinked Photoshop file will prompt a dialog box with options, choose the most appropriate option and then click “OK”.
    • Convert Layers to Objects: This option will convert the Photoshop layers into Illustrator objects to be able preserve masks, transparency and blending modes.
                                 • Flatten Layers to a Single Object: This option will flatten all the Photoshop layers into a single layer to preserve the look and appearance of the image; however individual Photoshop layers will no longer be editable.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Not Editable)
This method is ideal for incorporating your Photoshop files in an existing Illustrator document. Although the PSD file will no longer be editable it will be able to maintain a link to your original Photoshop file.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place.
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click Place. Make sure the Link option is selected.

**The one time it did not work for me and appeared black was because of shadows (hue/saturation adjustment layer). So I compared the old .psd file, that converted fine, to the current one I was trying got send. One of the differences was the introduction of shadows by duplicating the fonts and image shapes, then merging them to a single image with hue/saturation adjustments. When adjusting the hue/saturation, it appears in a separate layer that was locked to next to image that was just produced. Some reason that was the bug that kept Illustrator from placing the .psd file in Illustrator. The solution was to merge the hue/saturation layer with the image layer. Now it’s back to normal.
Hope this save you some time.

  • Trouble with "Place Photoshop button".  It is not importing or "placing" my PSD file.

So I have a triple layer PSD file of a custom facebook icon that I am trying to "place" into Muse.  (PSD file includes transparent backgound, layer 1 image, and layer 2 image).  When I go to the "Place Photoshop button" and select my PSD file containing this and click "ok", the dialog option box does pop up however without my images or file.  Am I doing something wrong?

    Hello SDM,
Are you getting this option after you select the .psd file ?

  • Placed native .psd files always "get modifed" when creating pdf

Just today started this very odd thing. ANY, any native .psd file I place into a new or old InDesign CS4 document, whether the .psd is RGB or CMYK, one layer, multiple layers, will tell me that as soon as I hit the blue "Export" button that "This document contains missing or modified links." Click Cancel and then use the Links panel to relink or update lnks or click OK to continue.
If I click cancel and update the link (which had never changed in the first place), then go to export again, it does the same thing. If I create a new document and try placing the same .psd file into the new ID document, it does the same thing. Only way I can get around this new FREAKINGLY FRUSTRATING error message is to not save the document, then export it.
I've tried trashing all the preferences, for both ID and PS, that didn't work. I've tried repairing permissions, and that didn't work.
This does not happen for .ai files or .eps (Illustrator or Photoshop). Or if I open an ID file with a .psd in it, it will tell its changed even after I've saved and closed the document.

  • How do I transfer a .psd file to illustrator that can then be placed in Muse as a .svg with transparent background?

I just wrote all this up in another thread.  I did not realize at the time that the last post was in 2014, so I'm giving it a go here.
I am currently trying to create an .svg using Photoshop .psd file (with layers in tact).  I'm new to these products so it may be obvious to others that the above intention was to eventually place the .svg in some sort of website creation software such as Muse.  Which is precisely what I am attempting. However, I am getting a white background once I place or copy and paste into Muse.  My starting .psd has a transparent background without any hidden layers causing this problem.  To test this I placed the .psd file into Muse and it still has a transparent background.  However when opening or placing this file into illustrator, it picks up a white background. If I do exactly as described above, I still get the same result.  So far I have tried:
    1) Simple copy and paste from Photoshop .svg to illustrator to Muse.  Result - white background.
    2) Placing the .psd in illustrator, then placing the .svg file in muse.  Result - white background.
    4) I have also tried the every combination of 1 and 2. - Result - white background.
    3) I have now created a path in Photoshop from the text layer to yet again attempt the above methods.  Result - white background.
I'm including an image of the object I am trying to place with transparent background, but I have both a flattened rasterized version, a version complete with layers and a third (.svg) with the corresponding objects.  I am completely new to Illustrator as of today so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
Link to .psd file "Welcome text"

I was having some difficulties getting the correct dimensions of one of my objects, I eventually solved this problem without using svg.  It was pretty simple when I stopped trying to over complicate things.  I just linked the object to a near by object in photoshop, merged and placed it all as one.  It looks great now.  Thanks for your reply.  You are correct, SVG was not the answer.
