Plain vanilla USM sharpening

I have the impression that no matter what I set, I can not make the Lightroom 1.3 sharpening to act like a simple USM, which I prefer for input sharpening (e.g. 300%/0.3px/0 for my D200). My problem with this is that it, I guess for noise suppression reasons, seems to treat edges differently then fine detail and texture, even if details are set to 100. To my eyes, this leads to either mush-like microdetail (e.g. in distant foliage) or overemphasised edges. In the end, the result has something to it that I can only describe as being unnatural - in an unpleasantly "digital" way.
So the only solution for me is to turn off sharpening in Lightroom completely and perform it in CS3. Sadly, there are 3 problems with this:
1. It makes judging focus difficult
2. It is another manual step in PS that I'd like to avoid and
3. Sometimes it is the only reason why I need to start PS and create a stupidly large PSD file on my harddisk.
My suggestion for an implementation would be:
1. It must be configurable for each camera model used, because the settings depend on the camera's AA filter strength
2. Settings just like in Photoshop USM: Amount/Radius/Threshold (I don't need the latter, but that's just me)
3. Maybe something that resembles how I optimise results in PS: Apply sharpening to a copy of the background layer, turn blend mode to luminosity and set blend if (layer underneath) to mask highlights (to avoid halos) and shadows (dependent on picture's ISO setting).
Kind regards,
Martin

Jeff, I read your article some months ago. Thanks for your effort.
Neil, as you may have read, I have played around with the settings.
Feel free to download my little test:
http://www.datzinger.net/misc/acr_sharpening_test.zip
The picture is useless, but lends itself quite nicely for a RAW conversion detail rendition check. D200 @ ISO 100, 17-55/2.8 @ 17mm/f8.
If I turn detail to 100 (suggested in Jeff's article), I get halos or too little sharpening.
If I turn detail to 50 (halo supression), edges are overemphasised in comparison to texture, digital waxing (for a lack of a better term) occurs.
If I turn masking to 50 (edge masking), digital waxing gets even worse.
If I turn sharpening off in ACR and use plain vanilla USM, I get the results I want.
Turning detail and masking to the (for me) most useless settings of 0 and 100, one can very easily see, what kind of look I do not want in my image details, not even slightly.
Maybe I am a bit allergic towards the waxing and the difference may not show up in prints anyway, but in the end, ACR/Lightroom doesn't behave like I would like it to, hence the feature request. BTW, if some image treatment looks bad on a calibrated LCD at 1:1 but prints well, it belongs to the output stage, IMO.
Kind regards,
Martin

• Plain vanillla "Uncompressed 10bit" with AJA Kona ??

Hi,
I'm going to be capturing some PAL 10bit Uncompressed footage from DigiBeta using a system with an AJA Kona card (I dont know exactally which model).
I'll be using the footage on another system with a different card (BlackMagic DeckLinkPro HD). Here is my question: Can I capture the footage using Apple's plain vanilla "Uncompressed 10bit" codec, or do I have to use the AJA codec? I want to avoid any color shifting.
Thank you !
Matthew

Well, I have heard about this as well. What you do is upconvert to the uncompressed codec of choice, or capture to that codec and then color correct, adjust the colors. The other machine, while they might have an AJA or Decklink, will play out that codec.
AFAIK. Wait for other to chime in...my experience in this area is minor.

• Best strategy for variable aggregate custom component in dataTable

Hey group, I've got a question.
I'd like to write a custom component to display a series of editable Things in a datatable, but the structure of each Thing will vary depending on what type of Thing it is. So, some Things will display radio button groups (with each radio button selecting a small set of additional input elements, so we have a vertical array radio buttons and beside each radio button, a small number of additional input elements), some will display text-entry fields, and so on.
I'm wondering what the best strategy for tackling this sort of thing is. I'm sort of thinking I'll need to do something like dynamically add to the component tree in my custom component's encodeBegin(), and purge the extra (sub-) components in encodeEnd().
Decoding will be a bit of a challenge, maybe.
Or do I simply instantiate (via constructor calls, not createComponent()) the components I want and explicitly call their encode*() and decode() methods, without adding them to the view tree?
To add to the fun of all this, I'm only just learning Faces (having gone through the Dudney book, Mastering JSF, and writing some simpler custom components) and I don't have experience with anything other than plain vanilla JSP. (No EJB, no Struts, no Tapestry, no spiffy VisualDevStudioWysiwyg++ [bah humbug, I'm an emacs user]). I'm using JSP 2.0, JSF 1.1_01, JBoss 4.0.1 and JDK 1.4.2. No, I won't upgrade to 1.5 (yet).
Any hints, pointers to good sample code? I've looked at some of the sample code that came with the RI and I've tried to navigate the JSF Blueprints stuff, but I haven't really found anything on aggregating components into a custom component. Did I miss something obvious?
If this isn't a good question, please let me know how I can sharpen it up a bit.
Thanks.
John.

Hi,
We're doing something very similar. I had a look at the Tomahawk Date component, and it seems to dynamically created InputText components in the encodeEnd(). However, it doesn't decode this directly (it only expects a single textual value). I expect you may have to check the request yourself in decode().
Other ideas would be appreciated, though - I'm still new to JSF.

• I joined the cloud, but did not see any of the new bells and whistles in photoshop CS6

I joined the cloud today and was looking forward to the new stuff in photoshop. I currently own CS6 stand alone. I opened an image and none of the new options(advanced sharpening, bridge as a filter, etc) were there. I did click update when on the photoshop CS6 app when I downloaded a couple of the new apps. What should I do to get a version of CS6 that has all of the advancements???

I have it solved. I know about the update for Lightroom in June, but the cloud version of photoshop has plenty of new features and "bells & whistles". I had a plain vanilla photoshop CS6 that I purchased a year ago. I updated to the cloud yesterday and the only action available for Photoshop was update. I did & it was the same old plain vanilla... no 3D( I didn't have extended), liquify and blur gallery could not be used with smart filters, etc., etc. I was supposed to get that with the cloud. I figured it out during a restless night. I uninstalled CS6, opened the application manager and reinstalled the CS6. Then I went into the help menu of the new extended version(3d now) and updated. I now have all of the new features and "bells & whistles" I was supposed to get when upgrading to the cloud. I am sure there are others in the same boat or will be soon. Adobe should see about correcting this in some way. Complete upgraded version should be available after one pushes the upgrade, even if they have a lesser version(non-extended) available.

• Nitpicks with "Bicubic Automatic"

I'm seeing two problems with the Bicubic Automatic setting in the Image Size dialog.
1. On reduction, this produces oversharpening. Skin particularly comes out awful. Or maybe it's just that the sharpening is being applied equally throughout the image, instead of intelligently as with the Smart Sharpen command.
2. If I change this setting to something else, it reverts back to Bicubic Automatic the next time I enter the dialogue. In the past, this setting has always been sticky. It's very annoying to have to be careful to change it each time.
To sum up, you've made it hard to change from a default setting that is not working well!
Aaron

Okay, I did some comparisons of the various forms of downsampling. What I did was find a representative image with some good contrasts, then downsample to 25% using the various methods in Photoshop CS5 and CS6, then re-upsample to original size using Nearest Neighbor, so we can clearly see the pixels. Here are the results:
Photoshop CS5:
Photoshop CS6:
Based on these, I'd say there's actually some USM sharpening in Bicubic Smoother as well, more than just plain Bicubic!
Seems pretty obvious to me that just plain Bicubic is still the best, but to each his own!

• How to Install Coldfusion 8 64-bit on Small Business Server 2008 64-bit

How to Install Coldfusion 8 64-bit on Small Business Server 2008 64-bit
I ran Coldfusion 8 on SBS 2003 Premium for 6 months with no problems. When we finally decided to cut over to SBS 2008, that’s when everything went to hell. I tried for weeks to get Coldfusion 8 to install properly on the new SBS 2008 64-bit box. During the course which, I found bits and pieces of information for Vista 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 64-bit installations. There are some distinct differences, however, with SBS 2008 since it runs core Web applications like OWA, RWW and Companyweb. After countless unsuccessful attempts, one of which completed corrupted the box, I found the solution.
I have attempted in this white paper to detail the steps to assist others who may be in a similar situation. I don’t make any warranty for the information, but so long as you follow the steps carefully you should be fine. BTW, for those of you who say Adobe offers free technical support for licensed users, that’s not entirely true. Like I said, I purchased CF8 and originally installed it on an SBS 2003 Premium box. After we cut over to SBS 2008 and encountered problems, Adobe wouldn’t provide any technical support without charging. Moreover, based on my initial conversations with Adobe’s technical team, no one seemed to know much about running 64-bit on SBS.
From my understanding, only two versions of Coldfusion 8 can be installed in 64-bit: Enterprise and Developer. The “normal” install (which I paid a grand for) can only be deployed in 32-bit mode – gee, THANKS Adobe! By the way, in Developer mode only two distinct IPs can access the site in addition to the localhost. Any additional IPs will result in a CFML error message stating that the maximum number of IPs have been exceeded. At any rate, take your time and follow the steps to achieve a successful installation.
PRE-INSTALLATION TASKS
Back Up SBS
It’s always a good practice to backup your server before deploying any kind of major system changes. Although this step is optional, I recommend it in case you need to restore your server for any reason. Bear in mind, if your system ever gets totally corrupted, you cannot restore back from the twice daily incremental backup images alone. You will need a full backup with system recovery information to restore. Here are the basic steps:
Click: Start > Programs > Administrative Tools. Right-click “Windows Server Backup” and choose “Run as administrator”.
Click “Backup Once” under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Choose the “Different Options” radio button under Backup Options.
Choose the “Custom” radio button. What we’re primarily interested in here is backing up the OS – not your data partitions or attached drives.
Select the “SYSTEM (C)” checkbox, uncheck any others. Also, ensure that the “Enable system recovery” checkbox is selected before continuing on.
Under ‘Specify Destination Type’, I usually select the “Local drives” radio button and point it to a Terrabyte USB drive I use for backups. You can point this to a tape drive, or select the “Remote shared folder” radio button if you map to a UNC path to store your backup images. Just remember, make sure that whatever path you select can readily be accessed in the event of an emergency. Also, make sure the “Verify after writing (recommended)” checkbox is selected.
Under ‘Specified Advanced Option’, I usually select the “VSS full backup” radio button instead of the default since I don’t use a 3rd party backup product. If like me you rely solely on SBS for your backups, choose the full backup option.
Confirm everything and click “Backup”. This process may take several hours depending on the size of your system.
Verify ISAPI Filters:
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane.
In the center pane under IIS, double click the “Modules” icon to verify that the ISAPI native modules are already installed for IIS. If it’s set up correctly you should see two entries:
IsapiFilterModule              %windir%\System32\inetsrv\filter.dll
IsapiModule                        %windir%\System32\inetsrv\isapi.dll
If either of these modules are missing, you will need to re-install these (google for a solution).
Set Up Development Environment
Create a directory for your CFML files outside of the default Windows location (e.g., default is usually C:\inetpub\wwwroot\). For the purpose of our install, I created a directory on a separate disk called: D:\DEV.
Copy and paste your CFML files and directories into the new DEV root Web directory. This will eventually be the directory where the Coldfusion installer places the CFIDE and CFDOCS folders.
Open IIS Manager and double-click the server instance in the left hand pane. Expand the “Sites” folder. Right-click the Sites folder and select “Add Web Site”.
Enter a name in the “Site Name” box (e.g., “test-site”). You will notice that the system will automatically create a corresponding Application Pool with the same name. NOTE: this is important to prevent conflicts between the DefaultAppPool (needed for SBS Web apps like OWA, RWW, etc.) and the application pool needed for Coldfusion to function properly in SBS 2008.
Point the “Physical Path” to the directory you created in step #1 above (e.g., “D:\DEV”).
Don’t worry about testing the connection. If you click “Test Settings” you may receive a warning that IIS cannot verify access to path (D:\DEV). Don’t worry about this for the time being.
Under “Host name”, enter a DNS path to your site (e.g., “dev.test-site.com”). Click “OK”.
Configure Application Pools for Installation
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane. Click on “Application Pools” to display the list of server application pools in the center pane.
In the “Actions” pane on the right-hand side, click “Set Application Pool Defaults”.
Change “Enable 32-Bit Applications” - the second item from the top – from “False” to “True”, and then click “OK”. NOTE: if you skip this step, Coldfusion will not properly create the required mappings during the install. We will change this setting back after the installation completes – more on this later.
Modify the application.host.config File for 64-Bitness
Click: Start > Programs > Accessories. Right-click “Notepad” and choose “Run as administrator”.
Open the config file from within Notepad – default location: C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config
Do a search and change this one line from:
<add name="PasswordExpiryModule" image="C:\Windows\system32\RpcProxy\RpcProxy.dll" />
To this:
<add name="PasswordExpiryModule" image="C:\Windows\system32\RpcProxy\RpcProxy.dll" preCondition="bitness64" />
Restart the IIS Admin service.
Set HTTP Compression
According to some threads I read, the http compression module can cause errors if you don’t disable it globally. To remedy this, perform the following:
Click: Start > Programs > Accessories. Right-click “Command Prompt” and choose “Run as administrator”.
At the command prompt, change directory to intetsrv by typing: cd inetsrv
Run the following command:
C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv>appcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /-[name='xpress']
This will turn off HTTP compression for all sites in IIS.
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane. Double-click the “Compression” icon in the IIS section of the center pane.
Uncheck all of the boxes, then click the “Apply” button under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Recheck all of the boxes, then click the “Apply” button under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Restart the IIS Admin service. This should enable compression and coldfusion to work at the same time.
NOTE: if for some reason you need to reverse this, run the following command from the command prompt:
C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /+[name='xpress',doStaticCompression='false',dll='%windir%\system32\inetsrv\suscomp.dll']
INSTALLATION TASKS
Download the 64-bit installation package from Adobe – filename: coldfusion-801-wind64.exe.
Right-click the file and select “Run as administrator”.
Accept the terms of the License Agreement.
If you have an Enterprise license, enter it. For our purposes, just click the “Developer Edition” checkbox.
Select “Server configuration” – the default radio button.
I deselected all subcomponents and can’t guarantee that you’ll arrive at the same results if you select additional items like “.NET Integrated Services”. It should be fine, particularly if you install documentation. My preference was to keep the install as plain vanilla as possible.
Select the directory path for Coldfusion to install into – default is :C\Coldfusion
THE NEXT TWO STEPS ARE CRITICAL TO YOUR SUCCESS. Unselect “All IIS Websites” and select the “Configure specific IIS Website or another web server” radio button. Click “Add”, and then select your test Web site (e.g., “test-site”) under “IIS Web Site”. Hit “OK”.
Do NOT use the default directory path for the CF Administrator location (e.g., default path: “C:\inetpub\wwwroot”). Instead, point the installer to your new DEV root Web directory (e.g., “D:\DEV”). The bottom line, you want the installer to place the CFIDE directory and files within this folder, alongside your other CFML files and folders.
Enter an Administrator password.
Choose to Enable RDS, or not. I enable this by preference but it is not required. This allows you to make updates to files using a CFML editor directly vs. having to move/FTP the files over if you’re working remotely. Opponents to this argue that it’s potentially less secure, but for a lower environment I don’t see this as a major concern.
Confirm everything to kick off the install.
If all goes well you should see a message at the end stating that the install was successful. I recommend you uncheck the box that asks you to open the CF Administrator in the default Web browser after the install. NOTE: we will open it a different way during the post-installation tasks. The worst thing that will happen if you forget to uncheck the box is that you might receive an error that the command prompt hung – not a big deal – just close it and move on to the next (final) steps.
POST-INSTALLATION TASKS
Verify CF Installation:
The installation will create a new folder in your program group: Start > Programs > Adobe > Coldfusion 8. The default “Administrator” link will not work because it points to the wrong path: http://127.0.0.1/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm. The “127.0.0.1” or “localhost” path as you may recall in IIS, points by default to the “C:\inetpub\wwwroot” directory. Our CFIDE files, however, are located within: D:\DEV.
To bring up the CF Administrator logon page, open up a Web browser and replace the “http://127.0.0.1” part of the path with the DNS path name to your CF environment (e.g., http://dev.test-site.com/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm).
This should bring up the Coldfusion Administrator Login screen. Enter in the Administrator password you created during the install to log in and configure your application server.
Verify that your test-site renders correctly by typing in your test URL into a Web browser (e.g., http://dev.test-site.com).
Fix Application Pool Defaults to Re-enable SBS Web Applications:
At this point, Coldfusion Administrator and your test CMFL Web site should be working properly. The problem is, default SBS Web applications like OWA, RWW and Companyweb will throw errors and fail to start. Fortunately, this is easily remedied by performing the following steps:
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane. Click on “Application Pools” to display the list of server application pools in the center pane.
In the “Actions” pane on the right-hand side, click “Set Application Pool Defaults”.
Change “Enable 32-Bit Applications” - the second item from the top – from “True” to “False” this time. This should re-enable the SBS applications, which would otherwise result in 500 errors (e.g., OWA, RWW, Companyweb, etc.). There is no need to restart IIS.
Open a Web browser and test that you can once again connect to OWA, RWW and Companyweb successfully.
In IIS click to highlight the application pool for your new site (e.g., “test-site”). In the right-hand pane, click “Advanced Settings”. Ensure that “Enable 32-Bit Applications” – second item from the top – is set to “True” for this application pool specifically.
Lastly, jump up and down for joy! Hopefully now, everything is working. Best of luck!! ..Paul D (MCP).

First, it would be a good idea for you to specify what distro of Linux you're using, as not all are supported by Adobe.
Second, this is probably your problem right here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/40416/why-is-lib-libc-so-6-missing
In a nutshell, CF expects the 32-bit version of libc.so.6 to be in /lib, but it's probably not. You might be able to modify the installer to point to the correct location for that file, or you might be able to create a symlink to the file - but as the above link describes, creating a symlink might have negative consequences.
As for installing CF 8 64-bit, that's only available with Enterprise, not Standard. If you want CF Standard 64-bit, you need to upgrade to CF 9.

• Excel-2007 cannot connect to Oracle ODBC data source, Control Panel can.

I cannot make an ODBC connection from Exce-2007 to Oracle work. I am an expert Excel and VBA user (since 1994) and I have frequently used Excel to access ODBC databases, including Oracle (I have done this with Excel-2003 both with worksheet queries and have written VBA ADO-connection routines). And even though in Excel-2007 a worksheet ODBC query is supposed to be easier to create than in previous version of Excel, my connection fails. Any suggestions and all help are welcome and much appreciated.
DETAILS

1) What is my system? I am using Excel-2007 on Windows Vista x64 and Oracle server v.11g on my computer (all this is on my computer, no network issues).
2) Why use Excel with Oracle at all? I use Excel-2007 to access Oracle rather than Access-2007 (or any other application like TOAD, etc.) because I do engineering calculations with the data stored in Oracle. These calculations are easier done in Excel (I suppose that one alternative to this could be to use some sql or Access to get the data from the database, then store it as plain vanilla CSV file, then open this file in Excel, then do the math (the math involves complex optimisation algorithms), then save the results as CSV, then use some sql or Access to put the data back into the database. Howwever this does not strike me as a quick or neat solution. And after all Excel has been designed to access ODBC databases, so why not use it?)
3) What do I do in Excel-2007 that won't work? I create an ODBC link to Oracle that does not work. In Excel-2007 this is straightforward:

define an ODBC connection (Data tab --> From other sources --> From data connection wizard);

define a query on the worksheet -- that's it, this is all!

I start with creating an ODBC connection:
a) I choose an ODBC data source type: ODBC DSN
b) Excel-2007 displays the list of the available ODBC data sources. I see in it my Oracle database name and I select it.
c) Excel-2007 displays the Data Link Properties:
- the "Provider" has a list of the OLE DB drivers with preselected "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers". I keep this default selection.
- the "Connection" tab has a connection string "DSN=<my database name>" which I keep, it also has fields for the user name and the password, which I fill with the correct credentials.
- Finally there is a button "Test Connection", which when I click produces the following error message:
"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider.
Unespecified error"

4) Additional food for thought:
a) In the above walk-through the only data, which I type, are the user name and password, everything else is selected from lists offered by Excel-2007, hence any possibility of typos being the cause of the problem can safely be discarded.
b) I can test the ODBC driver in the Control Panel and it shows that it can connect to the Oracle database:
- in Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC) on the "User DSN" tab I can see the list of the available ODBC data sources (same list as in Excel-2007, point 3b above) with the name of my database in it;
- selecting the name of my database from the list of the sources and clicking "Configure" button opens a tab with Data Source Name (same as in Excel-2007), TNS Service Name and User ID. I enter <user name>/<password> and click "Test Connection" button. A message "Connection successful" appears (just for a test I enter incorrect user credentials and "Unable to connect" message appears)
BOTTOM LINE

The procedure for using an ODBC connection from Excel is very simple, in the past I have created and used such connections numerous times with Excel-2003 and earlier on Win-XP and earlier. But now on Excel-2007 and Vista-x64 I cannot make it work.
Also, testing an ODBC connection driver is really easy and simple to be done in the Control Panel. There testing the same ODBC connection, which fails in Excel-2007, results in success.
I am frustrated by the simplicity of the problem and yet the persistant error. I have lost now two full days in failed attempts to make the simple procedure work and in searching the internet for answers.
All help is highly appreciated ,

Did you find the solution to your problem?
If not, I think I may know.
Excel 2007 is a 32-bit application.
When installing 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment, the "default" location is:
C:\Program files (x86)\...
Excel then launches from this location.
However, when it connects to Oracle and passes the name of the calling program, Oracle attempts to "interpret" the value of (x86) as if
the value within the parenthesis are being passed as a reference. Of course, iOracle doesn't find anything, so the result is (),
and then it cannot return the connection info back to the calling application.
I corrected it by installing Excel in C:\Program Files\, and once launched from that location, it works the same as on the 32-bit machines.
However, at my location, they are FORCING Excel to be installed in the(x86) location.
What I'm trying to discover now is:
Is it possible to flag Oracle to NOT process the embedded variables?
Or, is it possible to assign a variable in Oracle such that x86 = "(x86)", so that the end result is viable?
Have you had any luck with your installation?
thanks,
Paul

• Can no longer download from some of my 'usual' places, even after the 'update'. WTF?

I've been unable to download ANYTHING from a few of my 'regular' places since I got this %#*@^ 'improved' Firefox. If it wasn't nearly impossible to do, I'd go back to the old one, at least it did ALL the things I use a browser for.
Here's the deal. I go to one of these websites, spy something I need, and try to start a download. Does it happen? NO! Why not? Because said website admonishes me that I already have my limit of downloads in progress! Seems simple enough, you think? Sure, except that I have NO f**king downloads in progress! That never happened with the older Firefox, the one that worked. I've spoken with the webmaster of a couple of the sites involved, and they've made no changes, have no other problems, BUT they advise me that MANY of their users who have this POS 'new' Firefox are having the exact same issue.
I hoped that, once you people issued an 'update' for this spiffy new Firefox4, you'd fix this problem. Surely I'm not the only person cursed with this problem?
Hey, look, if you can't or won't bother to fix this, would you at least have the decency to make it easy to go back to the OLD Firefox that worked reliably?
You can bet I'm making it my business to tell anyone and everyone I can reach that FF4 is a POS, and this is a very good time to find a new browser, like Chrome. Even IE manages to download from the website(s) FF4 no longer d/l's from.
I'd be ashamed, if I was you.
If it matters, mine is a plain vanilla PC, running 64-bit Win7, basic un-tweaked installation. I have the issue noted above whether or not I have any add-on's working. I've made sure to reboot the PC and restart FF4. I've downloaded and installed the alleged 'update', then again rebooted the machine, and still have the same f**king problem, website(s) think I'm already downloading. I never had this problem before I got this spiffy new Firefox4, and if it wasn't such a chore to remove it and go back to a Firefox that WORKED, I would have already done so. Now you've done an 'update', and apparently no one there gives a f**k about this. The websites involved are the same ones I've been d/l'ing from for years, with no problems, and they've made no changes. My PC hasn't been in any way changed, it's entirely the fault of Firefox4. What a POS!

• The custm error page is not getting loaded in TomCat 5.0

Hi all,
I am working on a JSF web application deployed in Tomcat 5.0.I was trying to redirect 404 and 500 error pages to custom error pages.But the error pages are not getting loaded and i am getting normal Tocat 404 status page.
I am giving the web.xml entry for the error page defenition.
<error-page>
<error-code>404</error-code>
<location>/faces/displayErrorpage.jsp</location>
</error-page>
<error-page>
<error-code>500</error-code>
<location>/faces/SessionExpirepage.jsp</location>
</error-page>
<error-page>
<exception-type>java.lang.Throwable</exception-type>
<location>/faces/displayErrorpage.jsp</location>
</error-page>
Please help me out to solve this problem.Its urgent.I will be greatful for any kind of help.
Note: The same application working fine,ie,the error page is getting loaded while deploying WAS 6.0.
Jeevan Edakkunnath.

That's a specification version. I was asking for the implementation and version. Is it the Sun reference implementation (Sun JSF RI)? If so, which build?
It works flawlessly here on the latest build of Sun JSF RI 1.1, the 1.1_02. You can get the latest build at [http://javaserverfaces.dev.java.net]. I was using Tomcat 6.0.14 by the way, it might make difference.
Does it work if you use plain vanilla JSP files and do not pass the request through the FacesServlet? I recall some bugs related to it, but I am not sure anymore if it is related to the JSF implementation or application server used.

• Can anyone explain this behavior and tell me how to fix it?

Using NetBeans 6.5 on Windows, Glassfish v2.1
I have a JSF application with a page that has a tab set.
On one of the tabs I have a panel with company information.
One of the components on the page is an InputText field with the value bound to a session bean variable.
The tab also has an Add button.
Here is what the JSP looks like for the input text and button components
<h:inputText binding="#{MainPage.companyNameTF}" id="companyNameTF" readonly="#{SessionBean1.readOnlyFlag}"
<h:commandButton action="#{MainPage.mainAddBtn_action}" disabled="#{SessionBean1.disableEdit}" id="mainAddBtn"
style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; left: 425px; top: 380px; position: absolute; width: 75px" value="Add"/>
This is all plain vanilla stuff and I would expect that when the Add button is pushed, the session bean property would be filled with
the value entered in the input text field.
In the java code for the page, I have a method to process the Add button push.
Originally, it just called a method in the session bean to check that a value was entered in the input text field by checking the bound
session bean property.
For some reason, that was not getting filled and I was getting either a null or empty string rather than the value in the text field.
I added some checking in the method that processes the Add button push so I could check the values in the debugger.
Here is a sample of that code:
public String mainAddBtn_action() {
String s = sb1.getCompanyName();
s = (String)this.companyNameTF.getValue();
s = (String)this.companyNameTF.getSubmittedValue();I check this in the debugger and NONE of the variants that I have listed have the value that was entered into the text field.
The submittedValue is null and the others are empty strings (that is what they were initalized to).
This is all pertty straight forward stuff and I am at a loss to explain what is happening.
Can anyone expain this behavior, and, most important, how can I force the values to be present when the Add button is pushed.
I have never experienced this problem before, and have no clue what is causing it.
Thanks.

Basically, the component bindings are just being used in plain vanilla get/set modes.
I set them to "" when I do a clear for the fields and they are set to a value via the text field.
No other action other than to read the values via get to insert them into the database.
And, I always use the get/set methods rather than just setting the value directly.
This is what is so strange about this behavior - I have created dozens of database add/update/delete pages using this same model and have not had a problem with them - even in a tab context.
Not a clue why this one is different.
I did notice that I had an error on the page (in IE7, you get a small triangle warning sign when something is not right).
I figured that might be the problem - maybe buggering up the rendering process.
I tracked that down and do not get that anymore (it had to do with the PDF display I was trying to get working a while back), but that did not resolve the problem.
I don't think there are any tab conflicts - none of the components are shared between tabs, but I will see what happens when I move a couple of the components out of the tab context.
I noticed that it seems to skip a cycle. Here is what I can do.
1) Fill in text fields and add a record - works fine the first time.
2) Clear the text fields
3) Enter new data in the text fields and push Add
4) I get an error saying fields are blank from my data check process.
5) Enter new data and push Add - the record is added with the new data.
My work around is to not enter data in step 3 and just accept the error message in step 4, then go ahead and enter the real data in step 5.
Very ugly, but it works every time.

• MIDP 1.0: Image to byte[] or serializing...

I would like to extract pixels from a MIDP 1.0 "Image" object through any means possible. I am currently under the impression that "Image.toString()" would just do something lame, like giving me a string like "Image@1234" that identifies the class and the instance -- which could in principle be used for mere instance comparison. Anyhow, if I could serialize an Image object to a file, and then read back the file in to a byte array, then I would be delighted. I want to stress that I don't care how convoluted the approach may be, as long as it is in plain-vanilla J2ME Java code for MIDP 1.0 and is capable of working on an actual device (as opposed to an emulator). Can I cast the Image to Object, and then somehow convert to byte[]? I don't care if I have to get down and dirty, hacking the platform-specific bytes of the full Object manifestation of the Image. Anyhow, I want to make it clear that any hard core hack, doing all kinds of things that would break on different VMs, etc, is totally fine. Messy is fine. I just want access to the binary data of the entire Image object, or, even better (but only icing on the proverbial cake), access to pixel data. If I can get the byte[] representation of Image, then I can hack the rest myself.

My goal was do a capture of the way things actually rendered on a device, kind of like a "screen capture", only a little more indirect (since I don't think there is a way to get access to the pixels of the LCD). What I have to do is render to an off-screen Image object and then retrieve pixel data from it using the platform-dependent getPixels() supplied by Motorola. You're going to think I'm crazy, but I send this image data to a web server via POSTs, which get collected and stored as a single file on my web server. Voila! A screen capture of how things actually render to an Image object on an actual device.
Everything works, except...
I can't get the Motorola "getPixels()" method to work in their emulator, so I'm worried
that it won't work on my Motorola T720 (something I haven't actually tried, though).
I get a "Uncaught Exception: java/lang/Error" message from the T720 emulator
when I run one of the Motorola demos (built using their scripts) when I add the
following code to the Canvas paint() method:
if (0 == iDidThis) {  iDidThis = 1;
try
{  javax.microedition.lcdui.Image   temp = Image.createImage( 120, 160 );
int [] rgbData = new int [120*160];
com.motorola.game.ImageUtil.getPixels ( temp, 0, 0, 1, 1, rgbData );
System.out.println("Captured Data");
catch( java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e )
{  e.printStackTrace();   } }
This code runs only once, when the paint() method of the Canvas object is called for
the first time. Okay, I get the error message, but the "Bounce" demo (to which I added
the code block above) goes on to run just fine. (NOTE: The message "Captured Data"
is NOT printed in this scenario.)
I don't understand why the public static "com.motorola.game.ImageUtil.getPixels()"
method causes the "java/lang/Error" exception. (By the way, if I comment out the
call to this method, the code totally works without error, and I see the printed
statement "Captured Data" in the command window associated with the emulator.)
If my getPixels() call resulted in bad array access, then I would get the
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException exception. But apparently this is
not what is going on.
I am really rusty with J2ME, so I don't even know the meaning of "java/lang/Error".
I assume it is different from a "class not found" exception, but I suspect that my
problem has to do with a fault in the emulator trying to execute the code for the
"com.motorola.game.ImageUtil.getPixels()" method.
My Motorola emulator (v7.5) is from around December, 2002, so it may be really old, and
maybe this was a known issue at that time that has since been resolved. I'm just never
tried to use platform-specific J2ME APIs before, so I don't know if what I am observing
is my fault, or is an emulator issue.
I'd be grateful for any ideas about what might be going wrong and for ideas about
possible solutions.

• I can no longer encode a sequence in PP CC after the Dec 2013 update

II have had to shut down and restart PP CC about 5 times when just creating a very simple sequence of clips from a family get together for Thanskgiving. I had to shut down since everything just quite responding. Fortunately, when I reopened the project, I could resume. I finally got my sequence created, but, now I can't export the sequence. The encode has failed 8 times in a row. I've tried direct export, and exporting to the AME queue. Sometimes I get the error sound and the absolutely useless error message "Error compiling movie. Unknown Error." Other times it just stops making any progress in the encode with no message at all, but there are zero CPU cycles being consumed by PP or AME. It just plain stops, wiht no eror message. That happened 3 times when used the Media Queue approach, and in the preview window in AME, it just stopped encoding at very different places in the sequence.
It appears as though I can no longer encode a movie. And I'm paying big bucks for this every month? What a sap.
I'm glad I'm not a Pro, whose income and life depends on these tools! But, I have a full time job, and only a very small amount of free time. I do not want to spend my small amount of free time as an Adobe Beta Tester. I've been using Adobe tools for years, which is why I signed up for CC, but...at this point: I can't even encode a simple sequence!
I can't express my disappointment. I wanted to be loading the encoded MP4 onto VIMEO for my friends and family to see by now, but.....I can't even encode a very simple sequence. And, I not a newbie. I have hundreds of videos on VIMEO, and many more on Youtube and Smugmug. Every one was produced with Adobe PP (from v4 on).
But now: I'm dead in the water.
I gurantee you that i will not 're-up' when my CC subscription expires, and, I guess right now, I have to start from scratch with my raw clips and find some other tools to use? I wish all my expensive plug-ins (like MB Suite) would work in whatever the tools I will move to...but...I guess I'll just have to write them off as a loss, just like the next 8 months of paying for my Adobe CC Software that no longer works.
I wish there was a way I could take the Thanksgiving Project and its sequences I've created in PP CC and convert the Project to PP 6.0, since I never had any issues with it PP v6.0.
But, from what I understand, if you make a project in PP CC, you are lost. You can't go backwards.
And, you know what? I'm done. I quit. I won't even try starting over in PP 6.0. I'm going to find some other tools. I know they won;t be as full-featured as Adobe's, but...I'm not a pro. I just need something that works reliably.
Disgusted beyond words.
John
Win 7 Pro
24 GB Ram
NVidia GTX 470
PS: So, does Adobe have any kind of disaster recovery plan when an update like this fails? Can you please send out a "new update" that rolls me back to the prior version on PP CC?

OK. I have successfully encoded this very simple sequence, but, I *can't* get it to encode using my "standard" custom H.264 preset that I have been using for years.
But, I was not able to encode in many plain vanilla codecs either, but, I got a notice that there was a CC update for AE, so I took the time to install those updates, and, as I always do, I re-booted after the update of AE.
But, of course I had re-booted a couple times last night when I couldn't get the sequence to encode. That's somethinf I always try b4 writing to a form.
So, here's the sequecne of events this morning:
1) Try to encode sequecne to uncompressed AVI (Cineform AVI 1920x1080). It SUCCEEDED. But, even though the AVI was large > 3.6 GB the quality was horrible, I did not pay much attention to the quality settings.
2) Try to encode to Quicktime H.264 codec. FAILED.
3) Try to encode to Quicktime Codec=Uncompressed 4:2:2. FAILED
4) CC UPdate notice for AE CC and AE 6.0
5)  Perform update
6)  Reboot
7) Try to encode to Quicktime Codec=Uncompressed 4:2:2. SUCCEEDED - but ENORMOUS FILE SIZE *very nice quality though* :-)
8) Try to encode to Quicktime Codec=H.264. SUCCEEDED.
9) Try to encode to my 'usual' H.264 Preset FAILED, just hung up during the 2nd of two passes. My preset is a VBR with 2 passes, see bitmap below. In this particular case it got 'hung' at this frame. But, It never 'hangs' in the same place?
So, I don't know why I was able to encode the sequence using the Quicktime Wrapper and botn Uncompressed and H2.264 Codecs after updating AE CC and rebooting, but not before. Surely there is no interaction between AE and AME?
But, the re-boot should not have caused it alone, since I had rebooted several times last night, and I've installed nothing but the new update for AE since last night?
So, I guess I'm OK now. Please excuse my tone last night, I was very frustrtated.
It is interesting that I still can't encode this particluar sequence using my "standard" H.264 preset.
And, BTW Jim: What I mentioned in my previus post was not that I had brought and old PP 6.0 sequecne into CC and encoded it successfully, but that I just re-encoded one of my most complex sequences AGAIN in PP 6.0, just to wanted to make sure nothing was haywire with "good old" PP 6.0.
But, I did just re-encode a sequence from PP CC from before the Dec 13 update using my "standard" H.264 preset, and...yes...it DID encode.
SOOOOO...Jim, you were correct. My inability to encode was not due to the DEC 13 PP CC update, but something very peculiar about this one sequence. But, it is a very simple sequence. The only effects applied is some light color grading using MB Colorista, and Warp Stabilizer to a stabilize a few hand held shots. No other effects. And...the encode that fails using my standard preset, never fails at the same frame.
But...at this point I'm OK. Instead of an encoded file in MP4 I have an ecnoded H.264 rendition in the QuickTime MOV wrapper. At least I've got that sequence done and can move on to the ton of others I need to get to (without having to learn an entirely new tool). :-)

• HP 7510 AIO printer won't stay connected - Wired workstation, wireless printer

Hi! I spoke (and checked solution button) too soon. The printer still "disappears" from the Wired XP network workstation. The only difference since applying the solution given is that the disconnects are now happening about every 12 hours, vs every couple of hours.
Ink notification is set to "only when I print"
Static IP is set for all machines
HNDU works -- when the printer is visible but will hang the workstation if printer is not visible.
Original comments follow below;
HP 7510 wireless printer disappears -- 4 station XP wireless network, w/ 1 PC hardwired.
Options
04-12-2012 03:59 PM
Printer: HP 7510
Network: multi-station wireless, thru DLink DI-632 (one PC hardwired to router)
Address Config: Printer is using static IP -- outside of DCHP range (192.168.15.240)
Printer Config: Each computer has static IP set into the control panel app, using IP addressing.
Operating System: XP (Service Pack 3)
Other devices: Ipad, Xoom and Kindle Fire (all working using ePrint)
Network Security Protocol: WEP (we're out in the country)
Network Setup: Main router, along with 2 access ports (hardwired); currently using channels 1, 5 and 11 (again, we're in the country and have little competition for channels)
File Sharing: All machines in network have one open "share" drive, accessable with passwork.
Scenario: Wireless computers appear to stay connected for several days to a week at a time. (We reboot weekly, just as a SOP)
Computer that is wired to the network loses communication with the printer a couple of times a day and needs to be rebooted in order to restore connection.
When this happens, other machines continue to print and scan, with no problems, and the wired machine continues to have its name displayed in the SCANNING panel on the printer -- but the printer won't talk to it. All network functions, including internet and intranet access to the printer's EWS is still available. I have noticed that if I go into check ink levels, though, that the ink check software behaves differently.
Normally in the ink status app, there is a small "working" icon with 6 dots. When this computer is connected properly, it will start jumping around the circle, showing activitiy, get to 41%, and then display the ink status info. When the printer/computer connection is not working, the "working" icon will go to just a couple of percent then jump to the printer information page, showing make, model, serial number, firmware level etc.
In every instance so far, rebooting (with no other action) brings the printer/computer connection back to life -- until next time. I am trying to find any other pattern for this behavior, just can't identify it yet.
I started out with the plain vanilla installation, but then every computer in the network would consistently drop connections, about every 45 minutes. Using the info on this forum, I've eliminated the drop-outs for those printers, and got to the Static IP solutions (we've done that anyway for years with net-ready machines). This is the last machine that "drops off" It appears that some piece of HP-required software is "dropping out" or getting clobbered, but I cannot see a pattern, even checking and noting the various software used locally on the machine, and the various websites visited. So far, no pattern.
I am hoping that an HP guru with access to the source for the "ink supply" status software can take a look at what is happening and why it will always go to 41% and then display ink status (when connected) and then only go a couple of percent and display the ink status (when it isn't connected).
Thanks, in advance,
jim

More info:
In last paragraph, above, the request for "ink status" is returned with a static display of the printer firmware version, driver version, step level, MAC# etc of the printer, not "ink status" when the printer is disconnected.
Also, when printer is disconnected the HP home networking utility will hang the system -- a hard reboot is required, which restores the printer, until the next time it goes "into the woods". Signal stregth, measured on the printer, is 4 bars (very good).

Thanks! That appears to solve the problem. After your suggestion, I remembered that I set the "ink level warning" on this machine ONLY to "Always warn me", as opposed to "tell me only when I am printing". That seemed to be the problem. Only the computer that was set to "always warn on low ink-levels" was disconnecting -- the others worked fine! Now, all are working fine.
Just to be safe, though, I've also turned off the "scan from printer to computer" function on each computer. That was set for each machine, and seemed to work fine. The other machines in the network did not disconnect, and the printer was tracked whether each computer was on or off. May try to turn it on later; I'll see if the family uses that feature very often!
Thank you for your help.

I spoke too soon! After about 26 hours, the printer connection on the one "hard-wired" CPU dropped, which is better than before, but still not solid. Same exact symptoms as before. Only piece of the puzzle that was different this time is about 50 pages were scanned, some to this computer. Used the "Scan requested from CPU" process, rather than enabling the "Scan TO Cpu" function in the software app. It did not drop the connection immediately after -- about 1 hour to 1.5 hours afterwards. Suspect this is a coincidence, not a cause of the problem with this machine.
I also scanned (same approach) from one other CPU on the network -- that wifi connection is still rock-solid.

I think it is fixed now.....the problem seems to reside in the module that will notify you immediately if ink is low (vs notify me only when printing). If, when initially installed, the user selects "immediately", then the printer will randomly disappear. (More on "re-finding it" later.)
Also, it is difficult to change the ink notification setting, because it appears not to be "sticky", but will sometimes, flip. (I've not figured this out yet). As long as the setting for "low ink notification" is on "only when printing", life is good.
If the printer does disappear, go over to the Advanced tab when the printer software/firmware page comes up, instead of the current ink levels. Reset the selection about "tell me about ink notification" to "only when printing", and then toggle the "autoshut off" from "NEVER" to "2 hours" and then, finally, back to "NEVER". Then, lastly, press closed on the panel. Printer should be connected again. To test, go to the Photosmart 7510 app again, and select "Show estimated ink levels". The counter will start at 1%, jump to 41% and then bounce around until it displays the ink level.
FOR HP TECH: Please consider making the "ink level notification" persistent in the registry OR provide a de-install tool that will completely clean all traces of the prior installation of the 7510 driver / app in the registry, so that a new install may have this setting saved correctly.
Hope this helps some of you -- it's an excellent printer once its running!

• Problem installing Crystal Reports 2013 on a Windows 2012 R2 server

Sheesh. One of my users needs crystal reports and still uses it weekly. It's time to update off of an old 2003 server so I setup a new Windows 2012 R2 server so that she and others can RDP into it and use the application and reports (it's a payroll thing so they want limited access).

I can't find any information on this! I have found a similar message that refers to a 2011 install that was fixed with a SP9? But this machine has no current install. I did buy the full version two days ago online from the sap store.

There is an older C++ library that you need that is not available by default on Win 2012. You can get the install for this here:
Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update from Official Microsoft Do…
Also, be sure you're logged in with Administrator rights, the right-click and "Run as Administrator" when you run setup. You might also have to turn off the Windows Firewall when you run the install (you can turn it back on again after the install is complete.)

• Getting parameters from multipart request

I'm using org.apache.tomcat.utils.fileupload to parse uploaded files from a multipart form, but unfortunately I can't seem to get normal parameters from such a form with request.getParameter(). Is there a way to use both together?

You might already have solved your problem, but you may find this MultipartFilter useful too: http://balusc.blogspot.com/2007/11/multipartfilter.html
It automatically detects multipart/form-data requests and sets the plain vanilla form parameters back in the ParameterMap of the HttpServletRequest and sets the files as attributes of the HttpServletRequest. This way there is no need to worry about the form encoding type inside the servlet.
