Plan for editing rig to learn Premiere Pro, AE & Photoshop

I am building an video editing rig to learn Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop with a view to producing web based corporate videos and some project ideas I’ve had percolating. Original video will be shot DSLR & GoPro. ‘Back in the day’ (think  1” & Betacam SP tape…), I produced broadcast quality corporates,  TVCs and TV programs, but that was before raising kids and a spouses’ career took precedence. Money is tight (divorce & still raising 5 kids), so I plan to build up my editing rig in stages. I’ve built a few low to medium spec gaming rigs, so initially to learn the software, I’ll upgrade one of the gaming rigs to minimum editing spec (Version 1), then upgrade a bit further to a Version 2 rig, and if things pan out as planned (and I can start earning a more little income), I can then justify the investment in a proper workstation based around a 3930K CPU or whatever its equivalent is then.
Existing mid spec gaming rig:
CPU - 2500K
Mobo – ASRock Z77 Extreme 4
RAM – 2 x 4GB 1600Mhz
GPU – HD7850
C: SSD – SanDisk Extreme 120GB - OS & Programs
D: HDD 1 – 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 - HD103UJ 7200rpm - Users
E: HDD 2 – 2TB Seagate Barracuda - ST2000DM003 7200rpm - Media
PSU – HX650W Corsair
Mid Tower Case with front USB 3.0
OS Win7HP
Version 1 Editing Rig basically takes the Gaming Rig, replaces the HD7850 with a GTX 660 to take advantage of CUDA, as OpenCL does not yet seem to offer as much performance advantage as CUDA. I’ll also upgrade the RAM from 2 x 4GB to a 2 x 8GB kit and add 2 x 1TB 7200rpm HDD in Raid 0 and a Cooler Master Hyper 212X to keep things temps down, as I plan to OC the 2500K.
Version 1 Editing Rig:
CPU - 2500K
Mobo – Asrock Z77 Extreme 4
RAM – 2 x 8GB 1600Mhz (G.Skill Ares F3-1600C10D-16GAO)
GPU – GTX 660 (Gigabyte GV-N660OC-2GD)
C: SSD – SanDisk Extreme 120GB - OS, Programs, Pagefile
D: HDD 1 – 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 - HD103UJ 7200rpm – Media, Projects
E: HDD 2 – 2 x 1TB Seagate – ST1000DM003 7200rpm - RAID 0 – Previews, Media Cache
F: HDD 3 - 2TB Seagate Barracuda - ST2000DM001 7200rpm – Export, Backup of raid
PSU – HX650W Corsair
Case: Mid Tower with front USB 3.0
OS - Win7HP
Version 2 Editing Rig adds a 3770K CPU, Windows 7 Pro and another 2 X 8GB RAM to total 32GB. Around this time I also plan to add a 27” WQHD IPS monitor.
Version 2 Editing Rig:
CPU - 3770K
Mobo - ASRock Z77 Extreme 4
RAM – 32GB - 4 x 8GB 1600Mhz (G.Skill Ares F3-1600C10D-16GAO)
GPU – GTX 660 (Gigabyte GV-N660OC-2GD)
C: SSD – SanDisk Extreme 120GB - OS, Programs, Page File
D: HDD 1 – 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 - HD103UJ 7200rpm – Media, Projects
E: HDD 2 – 2 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda – ST1000DM003 7200rpm - RAID 0 – Previews, Media Cache
F: HDD 3 - 2TB Seagate Barracuda - ST2000DM001 7200rpm – Export, Backup of Raid
PSU – HX650W Corsair
Case: Mid Tower with front USB 3.0
OS - Win7Pro
I’m still a bit confused about hard drives…
The motherboard has 4 x SATA3 ports – 2 on the main chipset, 2 on ASMedia ASM1061. My connection plan is  C: SSD (OS, Program) and E: HDD 1 (Media, Projects) on main chipset SATA3 ports and E: HDD 2 RAID 0 (2 x 1TB Previews, Cache) on the 2 ASMedia SATA3 ports. Volume F:  HDD 3 (2TB Export, Backup of Raid) would be connected via SATA2.
Currently here in Australia the prices for Seagate 7200rpm ‘Barracuda’ drives are approx.:
1TB $70
2TB $100 - $50/TB
3TB $140 - $45/TB
For $140 extra I could swap the 2 X 1TB drives for 2 x 3TB drives, drop the 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 and have:
C: SSD – 120GB - OS, Programs, Page file
D: HDD 1 - 2 x 3TB Raid O – Media, Projects, Previews & Media Cache on the SATA3 ASMedia Chipset
F: HDD 2 – 2TB – Exports, Backup of Raid on main SATA3 chipset
I’m not sure which HDD setup would give a more responsive system and whether it’s worth the extra cost, given my current restricted budget... Currently I’m leaning towards just setting up what I have and revisiting it when I upgrade to the Version 2 3770K based rig.
Thanks in advance to the Adobe Forum Community and Harm & Bill @ ppbm7.com for helping me get this far.
Any feedback on any aspect of my plan is much appreciated!

Managed to scrape together a  few more $$, upgraded PSU, RAM & HDD.
Current spec is:
CPU - 3770K
Mobo - ASRock Z77 Extreme 4
RAM – 32GB - 4 x 8GB 1600Mhz (G.Skill Ares F3-1600C10D-16GAO)
GPU – GTX 660 (Gigabyte GV-N660OC-2GD)
C: SSD – SanDisk Extreme 120GB - OS, Programs, Page File
D: HDD 1 – 3TB Seagate Barracuda - ST3000DM001 7200rpm – Media, Projects
E: HDD 2 – 2 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda – ST1000DM003 7200rpm - RAID 0 – Previews, Media Cache
F: HDD 3 - 3TB Seagate Barracuda - ST3000DM001 7200rpm – Export, Backup of Raid
PSU – 850W Silverstone ST85F-P Strider Plu, 80Plus Silver Cert.
Case: Mid Tower with front USB 3.0
OS - Win7Pro
I still have a question about Disk Setup…
My plan was:
1 x 3TB - Media, Projects – Sata3 (Intel chipset)
2 x 1TB - Raid 0 - Previews, Media Cache - Sata2 (Intel chipset)
1 X 3TB - Exports and Backup – Sata2 (Intel chipset)
I just read Harm's clarification on the http://ppbm7.com Tweakers page that the drive setup should be 2 x Raid 0, which I had previously read as 2 drives in Raid 0 but now think should be two volumes, 4 drives. I could put the 2 x 3TB drives also in Raid 0 on Sata2 Intel and buy another 3TB drive for Backup  on SATA3 (ASMedia chipset) of the two Raid 0 volumes.
Could I ask what you guys believe would be the most efficient allocation of file types across these volumes?
I’m guessing the following, but would value your feedback
2 x 3TB Raid 0 – Media, Projects,
2 x 1TB Raid 0 – Media Cache & Database, Previews
1 x 3TB Export, Backup
Many Thanks!

  • Does anyone use the Asus G751JY-DH72X laptop for editing HD video in Premiere Pro

I wish to purchase a laptop for field use. The Asus G751JY-DH72X laptop seems to have great specs for HD editing in Premiere Pro (CC 2014).  I wonder if anyone has tried this unit and: 1) Does Mercury Hardware (GPU) acceleration work and 2) Does a Thunderbird array connected to the Thunderbird port work?

The Asus G751JY-DH72X appears to be the perfect Adobe CC mobile workstation spec wise. I am thinking of purchasing this myself. Adorama seems to have the best prices on the 512SSD, 1TB HHD model. According to the list of Adobe CC supported cards the Nividia GTX980M is officially on that list. I don't know about the array...but everything else is legit. Looking at the specs and add all the reviews...this is an excellent choice for an Adobe Animator/Editor.

    Dear Ladys and Gentlemen,
as a freelance cameraman and editor I eventually plan to work with Adobe Premiere Pro and possibly After Effects.

Can s.o. tell me if Premiere Pro and After Effects are compatible with these formats and the camera?
Because I need a mobil editing system I plan to buy a strong notebook (windows 8 / at least 17" monitor).
The laptop is suppost to ba a future-orientated choice, means rather overpeformed than just good enough at the time.
Can anyone suggest a certain 17"-notebook for editing 4K 50p with Premiere Pro and After Effects?

HP is pretty reticent to revealing "Future Plans".  It would be a real shot in the arm though if this happens!
How about it @Ty1 ?  Can you shed any light on the subject?

Are there any resources for learning Premiere Pro on the cheap?  I saw the lynda videos and they were too barebones.

I'd recommend Creative Edge over Lynda.
For example, you'd get full access to these:

  • In design to premiere pro or photoshop

Can you create a slideshow in in design and take it into premiere pro or photoshop?

I can't think of a direct way of doing this. InDesign could create multiple pages which could be exported as a PDF pages. Photoshop can import PDF pages but it won't be a slideshow.
InDesign can export Flash (SWF) slideshows, but Photoshop can't import a Flash slideshow.
You might be able to do it with an intermediary program like Flash Professional, which could create a video.

  • Can choose 5.1 in Audition CS6 for monitoring, but not in Premiere Pro CS6

    System: Z820, Win 7  Ultimate x64
Audio: Creative SoundBlaster Recon3D PCIe, Altec Lansing 5.1 speaker system
    SW: Master Collection CS6
I've been using Premiere Pro CS6 for a while now, but only for stereo video projects. I recently started working on a short film and needed 5.1 Surround Sound as well. I created a 5.1 surround track in Au, and have been able to monitor the sound and surround panning effects in Au during development. Here are the Audio and Channel Mapping settings I used to get my 5.1 to work so I could monitor it:
As can be seen, I've chosen the default MME Device Class here, and all seems well. I have 6 channels identified and mapped to the right corners. I've also confirmed my Master Track in Au is 5.1 Surround. I exported a 5.1 WAV and imported it into Pr, into a 5.1 surround session, confirming that both the track where the WAV file landed and the Master are both 6 channels (and although the order is displayed differently, the content correctly mapped from Au into Pr).
Now, my fun began. When I monitor the audio in Pr, I hear only Stereo. So, I check my channel mapping in Pr, as shown below:
As can be seen here as well, I've chosen the 'default' Premiere Pro WDM Sound. I've learned that WDM is a newer version of MME and encapsulates all the functionality of MME. I'm not sure why Au uses MME and Pr uses WDM. However, as shown, with WDM chosen, I only have 2 channels in the mapping dialog to work with, not the 6 I have (and had in Au). Nothing I can do will produce those other four channels.
As seen in the drop down captured in the above screen grab, I also have ASIO4ALL installed, but that too only shows 2 channels in both Pr and Au. Interestingly, when I hover the mouse over the speaker selection in the ASIO4ALL control panel, it only indicates there are 2 channels (but indicates that there are 6 INPUT channels). The Creative SBZ Series ASIO option is no better, providing only 2 channels.
So, I was off to check my system settings, which are all shown below:
As seen above, Windows knows there is 5.1 surround on the system, and the Test available  in the bottom left dialog proves that each speaker is configured and working correctly. Audition also knows there is 5.1 available on my system and uses it correctly as described earlier. However, Pr refuses to recognize this and as a result I am unable to monitor any 5.1 surround projects on my system. If neither Au nor Pr worked, then I'd mark it down as Sound Card or Driver issues, but since one Adobe product uses the system audio correctly, and the other doesn't, it leads me to believe that it is Pr who is at fault.
So, my question is this: Why won't Pr recognize my 6 output channels like Au does?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Shane

ryclark, I believe you are correct in that Au uses MME while Pr uses WDM, but both MME and WDM (which, according to the Microsoft specification, encapsulates ALL of the MME capabilities, and expands on them) are 5.1 capable. I can play my export from Au as a 6 channel interleaved WAV file as well as an AC3 conversion  of that same file in both VLC and Windows Media Player and get the same 5.1 channel surround sound field I do from Au.
After more research, I'm beginning to think this might be a result of the fact that Pr is 64 bit and Au is still 32 bit in CS5.5 and 6. I don't know if Au CC is 64 bit, but if it is, I'd be interested to know if what I am seeing is reproducible in the CC versions of Pr and Au (to eliminate the 64 bit vs 32 bit argument). Some have suggested that perhaps the standard SB driver is only 32 bit, although it 'supports' 64 bit supposedly, but maybe Pr just can't handle that 32 (faux 64) bit driver. A possibility.
Thanks for the read and response. Seems lots of people are in this boat together. You have recommended elsewhere to use an external audio interface, but just to do 5.1 monitoring (I don't do any live recording to my PC, this if for movie sound post/mixing) sounds pretty clunky. At the least, I think I'd need not only an external audio device with at least 6 channels out, but a receiver to take those outputs, and 6 new audio speakers to connect to that AVR. I currently use my computer's soundcard, as you know, and your standard 5.1 powered computer speaker system attached to that. Not the best, I know, but at this point, I'm just going for surround, but THX, so it is sufficient ;-).
    Cheers,
    Shane

  • Editing a .vob in Premiere Pro CS4 help!

Okay so I had the files for a dvd on my computer and was editing one of the .vob files in Premiere Pro. After I finished what I was doing I was going to re-save the file and burn it back to dvd, but I couldn't find a way to save/extract it as a .vob!
Is this possible and I just missed it somewhere?
If not possible, how could I do that? Encore maybe?
    Thanks a lot!!

Premiere Elements will do the Import, editing and then Burn to DVD (creating VOB's, plus the other necessary files and structure). It has some of the same editing capabilities as PrPro, plus a very limited authoring function.
Now for the caveat - you knew that one was coming, right? With a VOB, you have an MPEG-2 AV file, inside the VOB container. It has already been pretty heavily compressed. When you edit that material, and then Transcode it for another DVD-Video, you WILL be re-compressing that footage, and will loose quality. Some NLE programs do offer "smart rendering," but even then, if you do more than just cut the footage, like add Titles, Transitions, color correction, etc., even they will have to Transcode again, at least for the Clips, where you made changes. I think that Vegas Studio Pro offers smart rendering, as might some others. This you will have to research a bit, and read their statements carefully, to make sure what they are capable of and where there are limitations.
Note: a VOB is a delivery format/container. The MPEG-2 portion is not meant to be edited - just played on a set-top player, or a computer with a DVD software player. Cameras that produce miniDVD's are meant have those played only. They were never intended to be edited.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Edit HD Video in Premiere Pro 2.0?

I hope I'm not trying to do the impossible here with my dated version of Premiere Pro 2.0.
I bought an inexpensive HD camcorder. I'm shooting footage at 1080p 30fps. The result is an AVI file that I can just move from the camcorder to my second hard drive.
I'm trying to figure out which project preset to use in Premiere Pro 2.0 to edit this footage. None of the HD choices exactly match these specs. And since this is my first venture into HD, both shooting and editing, I can't figure out which preset to pick.
    Can anyone help with this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Scott

    Scott,
I am anything but a fan of any CODEC "packs." I do not know the one, to which you refer. Trouble with most CODEC packs, is that they first install a lot of "stuff," that is really bad for a video editing computer, then, they usually contain hacked, or reverse-engineered CODEC's, and these often overwrite good, commercial CODEC's. Last, they can change the priority of a good, commercial CODEC, for a much lesser one.
The H.264 CODEC is installed by Apple's QT. There are many others, but two that get very high marks are the Lead, and MainConcept. Some have had issues with the Apple H.264 (mainly on Export), and found that the Lead, or MainConcept fixed their problems.
Good luck, and if your CODEC pack installed FFDShow, I would immediately uninstall that one, as it has really messed things up for many Adobe users.
