Planar RGB vs PNG

I work as a VJ (video jockey) which means Im mixing videos in realtime, outputting to several projectors. All my video content have alpha-channel, since Im doing multiple layers. I found that Planar RGB runs much smoother on my new macbook pro 8gb quadcore than PNG. But what does it mean that Planar RGB is a legacy codec? It wont be getting anymore updates? Will it be obsolete in not too long? Which implications are involved?

Nothing to do with Motion. Hit google for descriptions and comparisons about your chosen codecs.
One's decision to use any particular codec is based on one's target application's needs. If your VJ tool absolutely need PlanarRGB, you will need to ask the mfr why they are sticking with a legacy codec when this is the 21st Century. If they won't help you, you must consider changing your hardware.

  • How to add "Planar RGB" to the list of export codecs?

Quicktime on my mac pro does not have "Planar RGB" in the list of codec to Export as...my G4 Mini does, however...
    both have QT Pro.
how can I get the mac pro to have Planar RGB?
    thanks!
    R

QuickTime System Preference pane / Advanced tab
Check the box to show "legacy encoders".

  • Planar RGB no longer available in QuickTime Pro!

I have a 3D>FC Studio workflow developed wherein I take my frame sequence from 3D and export it as a Planar RGB moving using Quick Time Pro....
After taking a few weeks off from this project, I just tried to use Planar RGB on a clip I rendered over night, and discovered that Planar RGB Is no longer there!
After blinking my eyes a few times and trying several more times with no success, I'm baffled.
Can anyone help me discover why it's not there and how to get it back?
The Box you get when you choose Export > Options >Settings says "Standard Video Compression Settings," so I figured Planar RGB is part of that complement as it always has been as far as I can remember...
thanks for the help...BTW, I looked for a Quicktime Pro forum, but found none...figured my best bet was to ask for help here.
    thank you!

    Ah...so it is. thank you!
this gives me more questions, tho...when did it become "legacy," and does that mean I'm going some arcane route with the animation I'm producing?
My workflow works for me and it looks great, I'm getting RT rendering of clips, so my process isn't "broken," but am I in for trouble down the road, say, when I upgrade my hardware/software?
    thanks!

  • RGB of PNGs changing in Keynote

The company I work for has a specific branded color that they want to use in presentations, and they wanted a branded keynote. I made all PNGs and text and boxes a certain RGB color (in this case, 146, 200, 62) but then when I view the Keynote on other computers, while the text and the color boxes remain the same, the pngs get noticably altered (119, 210, 48). I have no idea how to keep them from changing. Does anyone else have this problem, because now the presentation appears to have multiple greens when it should have this one branded green.

Also wanted to add, I had tried it on two other computers...the green changes to 134-194-46 on one and 144-201-81 on another. I don't know what's causing the PNGS (I also tried PDF and JPEG, and same changes happen) to change and I just need to know how to keep them from changing values from one computer to the next.

  • Why do my PNG QT clips playback choppy?

I am working on a 3D animation using Blender as the 3D tool, and FC Studio as my editing tool. I render frame stacks from Blender, and Open Sequence with QuickTime Pro, then save those as clips to be used in Final Cut.
I have Blender render each frame as PNG, and thought I'd do a PNG workflow, so I exported from Quicktime as PNG, millions, 24fps. but when I play them back, they are hesitant, and choppy.
Previously, my workflow was the same, only Lightwave3D was my 3D app, and I saved my frames as PSD, imported to QT Pro, then Saved out as Planar RGB. Everything was smooth as could be, even on much less powerful hardware than I have now.
Can anyone say why the PNG clips play so unsmoothly? Is a PNG workflow not a good idea? I selected it because it's lossless, and makes small clips (file size)
my size is 852px x 480 px...certainly WELL within the capabilities of this Mac Pro.
    Thanks for any clues!

852 (actually it should be 853 by Apple's calculations)x480 is square pixel 720x480. 720x480 is the same as 853x480 using the correct video pixel aspect ratio.
PNG is a stills codec, it's not a native codec used in video production. Check the FCP sequence presets and you'll a complete list of the native video formats FCP supports.
Alright..I think I'm getting close to epiphany here..thanks for hangin' in with me.
Just to be clear, my 3D out put is square pixels...this is a square pixel workflow from beginning to end. so if I keep everything 853 x 480, and use one of the FCP Presets, then I ought to get smooth playback, not only in FC Studio, but also in Quicktime Player?
    Thanks!

  • Photoshop wont open PNG or GIF files

i have recently encounter a problems that when i tried to opened the PNG or GIF files that i save earlier, photoshop CS3 just wont open it. It keeps giving me a messages saying "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file". I even reinstall the photoshop, but still receiving the same problem. If there any way i could fix it?
    Thanks,

I just figured out my problem with this as I was gettig the same error message. Not sure if the following information will help with other's problems or not - I am using Photoshop CS3.
First, I made sure my plug ins for png were updated. You can find the instructions for manually updating this direct from adobe site..... http://www.adobe.com/uk/support/security/bulletins/apsb07-13.html
Though my plug in for png was not updated, I realized that my mistake was rather simple. I was creating png's in photoshop by saving as, and just typing in .png after the filename instead of choosing .png from the file extension drop down. I wasn't choosng png from drop down extension list because it wasn't appearing as an option, I thought this was weird but I just typed it in myself. It seemed to save just fine, however upon trying to reopen the png file, I was getting the same error message in phtooshop as Kelly.
The solution - Photoshop does not give you the option to save a file as .png if it is in CMYK image mode. It must be in RGB, which makes sense since .png is a file format created mainly for web viewing. Once you change your image to RGB (menu option: Image/Mode/select RGB), the .png file extension will appear in the drop down and you should not get an error message when opening the file.
If you were not the creator of the .png file, then you may need to contact whomever saved this file and let them know they need to resave it as mentioned above.
    hope this helps!

  • File export size problem (PNG,JPG ....) - CS5

I am using trial of Adobe Illustrator CS5.
When ever I export file (RGB) to PNG or JPG format, there is size difference of 1px in width or hight or both.
But when I save that file with Save for Web & Devices option, then there is no such issue.
I have tested with so many files.
I didn't faced such problem with Illustrator 4.

I have looked all the option .... alignment, pixel grid , not frictional value ..... But still 1px difference.
Now I have switched back to CS 4. For while till problem not solved.
But there is issue. One more thing I am using Windows 7.

  • Newbie issues

Hello all, I just started using Final Cut and I would really appreciate some help with a few issues. I am trying to make a demo reel for animation, I have all my animation clips as quicktime files and one .tif image, my problems are:
    1. Why is the quality of the preview render so crappy? In the viewer window it looks great, but once I render it (and export it) it looks like garbage. Are there any settings I can change to up the finished quality?
    2. In one of the clips, the first few frames of audio are dropped out. I've tried re-importing it, re-making the clip and making sure that it wasn't overlapping anything else, but it still misses those few frames; even though it's fine in the viewer window.
    3. When I try to export using Quicktime Conversion the resulting file can't be read by any program.

  • Newbie with Viewer/Plaxo issues

Hi Folks - I looked through the archives a bit and didn't see a fix.
Here's the issues - I've a new 8830 that I truly love.  It's SO much better than the Treo I had.
Of course there will be cultural differences and I think thats what I have.
Clients are always emailing me attachments - jpgs, xl spreads, and .doc files.  Thus far, I can open some of the jpgs but nothing else.
Do I need an add on to work with MS Office?  IF so, then which is the better one?
Now for a new issue...  I use Plaxo and LinkedIn rather heavily.
Today, after two weeks of use, I am shut out of Plaxo.  The process has been to open the email, click on the connecting link and the browser opens.
Now, I click the link, the browser opens and the page is pretty much blank. . . if I scroll down for a minute or so, I can see some text but can't do anything with it. . .
I took the unit back to Verizon Tech support but they can't suggest a fix. . .
I DO get html on other sites. . . msn, etc
    Can anyone?
Thanks so much in advance for your replies

  • Soundfont Newbie Issues

So I am reasonably new to soundfonts, but I find that the vast majority of sf2 soundfonts I download don't work. Some do, which makes me think that the others are just busted, they are freebies after all, but it is literally like 4 to 1, non-working to working. Most do not show up in the EXS-24 menu at all, but a few do and just produce no sound. Is this about par for the course or am I doing something wrong?
Also, I have a lot of files in other formats floating around my soundfont folder in wav and .bk format. Is there a thread on how to get these to work in Logic.
    Cheers!

  • [solved] can't find/build mplayer with vdpau codec support

I want to install an mplayer that will handle vdpau.
I installed the standard mplayer version but that didn't have it.
Following some advice in another thread I rebuilt the standard mplayer with yaourt.
When I do 'mplayer -vo help' it shows a vdpau driver on the list. But when I do 'mplayer -vc help' there are no vdpau codecs listed.
I tried the same thing with mplayer-svn but get the same results.
I even tried compiling mplayer manually but get the same results.
    What am I doing wrong?
    TIA, gabu
(I have just moved to Archlinux64 after 3 years with Gentoo, so my Gentoo experience might be getting in the way)

I manually compiled using the svn source that I currently use on my Gentoo system and get the same odd results, whereas on Gentoo it compiles as you expect. This would seem to indicate that there is something about the Arch environment which is causing the problem rather than purely the source code.
I tried installing mplayer-vdpau-nogui but have the same problem there.

  • IMovie Newbie requests your help please!

    Newbie Questions
I am a 3D artist so I render my images from the 3D software rather than shooting on video. I have rendered out my animation as images dog01.bmp, dog2.bmp, dog3.bmp etc. You get the idea! Well there are 271 .bmp images each 1mb in size = 271 MB. I tried importing them into iMovie and it took 2 minutes to import all of them.
Q1. I read the "iMovie Getting Started .pdf" but it wasn't clear as to what to do with a collection of images. What do I do once I have loaded all 271 images of my images into the "Clips" section of iMovie?
Q2. I noticed my images have a black bar above and below them. What can I do to fix this?
    Image Type: .BMP
Image Size: 800 x 450 pixels (Is this size too big for imovie?)
    PPI: 72
Frame File Size: 1 MB (Is this size too big for imovie?)
    No. of Frames: 271
Total file size (272 images) = 280 MB
Q3. I can render my 3D animation in the following formats so can you tell me what formats are best?
    -Animation
    -Apple Intermediate Codec
    -Apple Pixlet Video
    -Apple VC H.263
    -BMP
    -Cinepak
    -Component Video
    -DV-PAL
    -DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
    -DVCPRO-PAL
    -DVCPRO50-NTSC
    -DVCPRO-PAL
    -Graphics
    -H.261
    -H.263
    -H.264
    -JPEG 2000
    -Motion JPEG A
    -Motion JPEG B
    -MPEG-4 Video
    -None
    -Photo-JPEG
    -Planar RGB
    -PNG
    Your help is appreciated!

    a) you do yourself a favour, and choose in iM's prefs "import to timeline"... your clips go direct to timline, no hand-dropping of 271 (pheww!!) pics needed
    b) dropping a folder of pics onto QTpro allows the conversion into a dv stream
    c) if you anim app allows export as "video" choose "dv PAL/NTSC" (appropiate video standard in your country)
    hope that helps...

  • Quicktime playback, choppy.

    I have a Mac version 10.3.9.
I am using Quicktime version 7 pro.
I am having a problem with direct streaming, and even video playback when offline. It does not happen with every file, and I cannot figure out why I am having problems.
When I do have a problem, the playback is extremely choppy, and it stutters. Anyone here familiar with this problem, and know how to rectify it?
    You can email me @
    [email protected]

I am definitely noticing the same issue -- choppy /
    jerky playback.
Because I just upgraded to 7, it is certainly
possible that my codecs are not up to date. (Also,
my videos do tend to be large -- 640 by 472, for
    example.)
    Any hints on
    a) solving the jerkines problem
    b) how to discover what codecs are being used by QT
and how to upgrade them (other than visiting each
    site for upgrades).
First off, what CODEC was used for your clips?? (You've used MANY different programs to create the files - these programs can use CODECs (like DivX, for example) that QuickTime doesn't understand.) Open a clip in QuickTime Player and select Window>Show Movie Info
According to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html these are the supported formats Supported Video Formats:
    Animation
    Apple BMP
Apple Pixlet (Mac OS X v10.3 only)
    Apple Video
    Cinepak
    Component video
    DV and DVC Pro NTSC
    DV PAL
    DVC Pro PAL
    Graphics
    H.261
    H.263
    H.264
    JPEG 2000 (Mac OS X)
    Microsoft OLE (decode only)
    Microsoft Video 1 (decode only)
    Motion JPEG A
    Motion JPEG B
    MPEG-4 (Part 2)
    Photo JPEG
    Planar RGB
    PNG
    Sorenson Video 2
    Sorenson Video 3
    TGA
    TIFF
BTW, are you trying to play your clips from a hard drive or a CD? A video file of the size you mentioned ( 640 by 472 ) needs a data rate CD players can't supply to your computer.

  • What happened to DVCPro50?

I just installed CS5, and DVCPro50 is not available as a render codec.  The DVCProHD codecs are still there.  What happened to the NTSC versions?

This list has some subtle differences from my CS3 list.  CS5 has H.261, H.263, Planar RGB, the Sorenson Codecs, TGA, and TIFF that my CS3 does NOT have.  And CS5 is missing the DVCPro 50 NTSC and PAL, and the DV/DVCPRO NTSC codecs.
    I appreciate your assistance.

  • Why do we see "Course Image" on Public Sites?

Whenever we fail to provide an image for a channel/collection, iTunes U comes up with a placeholder image instead.  That's the good part.  The bad and confusing (to Contributors) part is that this placeholder image says, "Course Image" which I assume is a vestige of iTunes nomenclature past.  What we used to call "courses" even on the public side, we now call "collections" in iTunes U and "channels" on many provider hosting solutions.  Here's a screenshot to illustrate:
So perhaps some nomenclature clean up is in order so I don't have to write, "channel/collection/course."  There are other vestigial terms laying about iTunes U and related environs.

Please provide collection artwork so this does not appear. Artwork should square (up to 600 x 600 px) and should be a RGB formatted PNG or JPEG.
