Planning on Getting a MacBook...

I am Planning on purchasing the Black 2.0 Ghz MacBook with 2 Gig's of RAM, my only concern is the Graphics situation. What can you tell me as far as planning any sort of games with these Graphics?
-Internet Wiz

I'm totally relaxed I just don't understand how people can recommend a machine that, even with all its qualities, has some very serious and obvious problems. When the Xbox came out, everybody was (with reason) bashing it because it was crashing all the time.
Just to put things into perspective, I've had to go to an Apple service centre twice since I got my macbook...less than a week ago! For a company that's priding itself in it's quality of support for its customers, I can't say I'm very impressed.

  • Anyone planning on getting a MacBook Pro and running Logic 7.2?

Hey everyone, I am a amature home artist and I have been using Logic pro for about 1.5 years (basically when it came out). In that time I used logic on a iMac G4, and iMac G5, and Powerbook G4 and an iBook G4. I have struggled back and forth wanting to work on a mobile rig that I can have anywheres in my home o do work on but was waiting for a powerful enough powerbook.
I am jumping into this thing sort of blind ...I currently have an iBook G4 and JUST sold my iMac G5 before the pricedrops (to get ready and unload before it devalued ...I got 1500 for it :)).
So here I am working on an iBook until I know the MacBook Pro is stable at which time I plan to pick one up and dump the iBook as well (sort of consolidate the G5 and iBook into a macbook).
I use an external firewire drive / Motu and Presonus interface / and basically lay down single tracks at a time.
I am hoping the MacBook Pro with 1-2GB of memory will be a dream come true. Anyone else going this route? What are your thoughts on the macbook specs and the idea as a whole.

I had sort of made up my mind that I will get one (baring major issues) this spring some time. Once the first run comes out and I see people are up and running ok.
For me, I keep my logic use limited to what is included in logic and then Jam Packs so I am probably by no means pushing the limits.
Its hard because I know so many have been waiting for a powerful jump in PowerBooks for so long. On a lighter note a buddy recently bought a G4 PB in the fall and it locks up all the time ...he had the logic board replaced and wiped the machine several times ...now its out again for service and probably on ebay when it comes back. Guess it doesnt get much worse than that.
Anyways, once I know people are up and running ok I think I will be set for my modest logic needs.
This transition stings because is new hardware and software all at once = greater potential for problems.

  • Getting a MacBook Pro

    Hi There,
I plan to get a MacBook Pro this summer when i go on holiday. My question is that is there anything i need to look out for or anything like that? Is it okay to live with? (I had a very bad experience with owning a Acer Laptop).
I'll be getting the 2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, 15 inch screen model. I would be probably using it for school stuff, video compresson, photo/video editing, lots of processor intensive stuff. I'm not too worried about the leopard release in october, i could just go out and buy a family pack anyway.
    Thanks in advance
    Robin

For the most part it's the
same as buying any other product. When you get it,
try everything and make sure everthing works. Check
the display for dead pixels and defects.
Finally, simply enjoy your new MBP.
    thanks dude

  • Hello guys. I'm on the fence of buying a new Haswell MacBook Pro Retina. I'm a student so i plan to get it with the student's discount. I want to ask you guys whether is it possible to use debit card to purchase anything from apple online store?

Hello guys. I'm on the fence of buying a new Haswell MacBook Pro Retina. I'm a student so i plan to get it with the student's discount. I want to ask you guys whether is it possible to use debit card to purchase anything from apple online store? Im using CIMBclicks debit card. Thank you.

Call the online store and ask them!  We are just users like yourself.  Besides, you will get a much faster answer directly from the horses mouth and it will be correct!

  • If I am planning on buying a macbook and my parent is an educator, therefor I would get a discount... If my parent does not come to buy it with me is there any way that I will still be able to recieve the discount?

If you are a college student and take a student ID you will get the education discount. If you are a student in public or private high school and have a student ID you may get the discount. I know of some parents/students who claim to have gotten the discount and some who have been denied it. Not sure if that's due to a policy change or just a difference in interpretation of who is eligible. I suggest you call your local store to find out.

  • Would you get a macbook air today?

I heard rumours that there would be new macbook airs on or around March. I am 80% sure about this because intel will release its Ivy core on March which apple planned to use for the new macbook air and pro. I actually planned to get it on Christmas but my dad said that it would be be benificial for me to get the new ones on March because I need a faster processor. I actually have a Compaq presario cq 61 which still works fine. I also heard that there would be 15" inch macbook airs so my questions are:
    1. Should I wait for the new ones?
    2. Would 15" be better than 13" if there a would be?
    3. I am still a middle schooler who just writes essays, makes power point, makes songs and simple videos; so would mba be a good choice for me or would a mbp do a better work for me?
    4. Any more recommendations?
I expect a really clear answer please! Thank you!!!

    1. Should I wait for the new ones?
If you have a computer that suits your needs in the meantime, sure.  But no one knows for sure when the new models will be released except for Apple, and they are very tight lipped on product announcements.  Also, technology moves fast, so any newly released mac will soon become "outdated", although it can meet a users needs for many years.
    2. Would 15" be better than 13" if there a would be?
IF  a model was made with a 15" screen it would depend on what features would be offered on the 15" that might not be offered on the 13" (which again, no one knows so that aspect is worthless to debate at this point).  Also, it would depend on what size screen preference you have.
    3. I am still a middle schooler who just writes essays, makes power point, makes songs and simple videos; so would mba be a good choice for me or would a mbp do a better work for me?
Based on what you say you intend on using it for, it sounds like a fine choice.  Just be advised that you can not upgrade anything on a MacBook Air (certainaly not the ram as it is soldered to the motherboard), but after the warranty expires, you can upgrade the solid state drive (flash memory).

  • Getting a macbook pro, what to do??

i have a choice. i want to edit a short documentary i shot on hdv at 1080i. i'm going to get a macbook pro to use going forward for this and other smaller video projects. the brand new mbp came out yesterday, and to get what i want, it's around $3700.
Now there is refurb on the apple site with 2.4ghz drive, 2gb ram, 160gb HD (5400). which i can get or about $2800, with applecare/fce.
i could save $1,000 with the refurb. but am i going to miss out on much? the differences:
    2.4 vs. 2.5 ghz
    180gb hd (5400) vs 200gb hd (7200)
regular screen vs. high res screen
video card 256 vs. video card 512
i'm planning on using external drive anyway (7200)...not sure what a 'scratch drive' is and how the workflow would be, thinking just store main clips on external and work on edits on internal?

For HD video on a MacBook Pro, you want the fastest machine you can afford. The refurb's are tempting as are several online deals of the previous generation- it all comes down to your budget.
The 7200 RPM internal drive will make a big difference in everything you do with video. Just get it- 5400 will drop frames sooner or later and you will be sad. but be sure not to fill it up or it will be slow- offload everything you can to your external drive.
The new 512 video card will help with Motion projects especially, as well as other heavily GPU dependent software such as Aperture. Even the 2.6 upgrade from 2.5 will make a difference- it just depends on your budget. Given that Macbook Pro's are not very upgradeable other than replacing the entire unit, i like to buy top of the line for my video production use.
As for the hi-res screen it's great for editing if your eyes are up to it. The best timeline experience you can have on a laptop!
That being said, i just ordered a 15 for the portability since I shoot with an HVX200 and I need to offload P2 cards in the field. My 17 HD/2.4 is great but it's a tank! Everything's a trade off in the portable arena... but what a delicious decision to have to make. Have fun with it!

  • Need help deciding if I should get a Macbook Air?

I should start off by saying that I currently own a 17" Macbook Pro with i5 2.53 GHz Dual Core Processor, 500GB Harddrive, and 4GB of Ram. I mostly use my macbook to go on the internet a lot, check email, and type up a Pages document and do research for school. I do have a couple games on my macbook like X-Plane 9 and I do have about 12 GB of music and 50GB of movies and about 450 Apps (Between iPhone and iPad) in iTunes. However I've recently been looking at getting a Macbook Air more and more. They are small, portable, and seem to be a little easier to handle. I'm just trying to figure out if it would be wise for me to switch? I WANT to sell my macbook pro and get an Air but i'm not sure if i'd still be able to do everything the same on it. I would definitely get the 13.3" with 256GB HD as I have used about 200GB on my current MAcbook Pro. As far as my movies and apps go, I have an External Harddrive that i could transfer it all too so im not concerned about that. But I would like to keep all my musci on the Air. Also, how is the volume/speakers on the Air? I tend to listen to YouTube and my musci quite a bit so this is important but difficult to test in stores. I tried one in A BEst Buy on full volume and it seemed good but I'd like to be sure. Also, should I grab an Air now or wait until July when everyone thinks that a new one will be released? Please any information would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

Wait until next month when Lion is released and the expected updates including SandyBridge (much faster) CPUs and Thunderbolt ports are announced before making up your mind is the best advise I can give.  Overall performance should improve, but there is a chance that the integrated Intel graphics that are a part of Sandy Bridge will be slower than the existing nVidia ones, but this is probably only applicable to gamers.  Wait and see and read review, then come back to your question.

  • Getting a MacBook for college

    Hey guys,
I'm wanting to get a MacBook for when I go to college. It looks like I'll be going to Vanderbilt right now, and here are their requirements for laptops:
Adequate processor/motherboard (e.g. "Intel Core Duo @2.20MHz w/ 667Mhz front side bus"); adequate video presentation size/depth and performance (e.g. "WXGA+"); adequate disk capacity and performance (e.g. "120MB @ 5400RPM"); adequate RAM (e.g. "2GB"); 10/100 Mb/s wired Ethernet w/ RJ-45 connector; 802.11 a/g wireless Ethernet; CD-Rom reader; Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Microsoft Windows XP Professional; Microsoft Office 2007 Professional (2003 is acceptable); adequate battery life; a service plan to ensure you have a working system for class.
I'm not sure what some of this stuff is, so which MacBook would you guys recommend for me? Also, do you really think I need Windows?

If you buy a macbook, the hardware, even in the base model, is going to meet those requirements. I dont know what idiot wrote those system requirements, but there hasnt been a processor that was 2.2MHz or a hard drive that is 120MB for a long time, but pretty much any laptop within the past 5 years is going to be okay for what youre going to need in college. I'm guessing that they want you to be using windows for Office, but office is available for OS X. I'd talk to someone who goes to vanderbilt and ask if there is software that all students use that requires windows.
if there is, you have 2 options:
    buy a PC
or buy a copy of windows and use bootcamp to dual boot or parallels or VMware to run windows inside OSX

  • I am a Communications student with my major in journalism and Broadcasting. Should i get a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro?

I am a university student and I currently use a Windows computer but I think it's time for a Mac upgrade. I'll be using it for writing lots of word documents and powerpoints, LOTS of web surfing espescially with many tabs and watching shows from my external hardrive. I'll be using some Adobe programs like Dreamweaver, Photoshop or Flash. I'll need to install the Windows OS into the laptop as well for my work. I'm also a light gamer. Mostly for the Dragon Age but that's not important. Portability, convenience and battery life is very important. I would hate to carry around a heavy laptop everyday.
I'm aiming for the either the 256GB, 13inch MacBook Air or the 13inch MacBook Pro. I'm not sure if I need such a high peformance laptop like the Pro but i'm also unsure if the Air is up for the job. The only reason why im hesitant to get the Pro is because it's very expensive and it's too heavy, Which one do you think i should get?

Macbook Pro 13-inch will do fine.
If you prefer a lightweight computer, Macbook Air 13-inch is the right choice
Consider 8-16GB RAM and 256 GB SSD.
    Best.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

Do the events from your iPhone calendar appear on icloud.com?  If not, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Calendar (in the Calendars section) and make sure you have selected an iCloud calendar as your default.  If you haven't, make this change, then add a new event on your iPhone calendar and see if appears on icloud.com and your Mac now.
