Planning to get a warranty for my iMac, more info inside...

Technically, it's my boyfriend's iMac, but as I'm more aware of what we need exactly, it'll explain below.
About two months ago the WiFi network I had set up was hacked by 14 people. I spent about an hour cleaning out the router, changing passwords, SSID's and encrypting the network moreso than it was prior.
After that I downloaded a free trial of 'Virus Barrier' as I have zero trust of McAfee (the only other option I could find).
After the trial ran out I deleted the icons as I'm not very familiar with Mac's and could not figure out if that would completely remove the software or not (I don't believe it did).
I use GoogleChrome as our browser, while running Netflix or just turning it on (doing anything really) we get asked to approve for 'KsFetch' or 'Kfetch' to open a port. I did a little reading on this and did/have not found anything saying it is/was a threat, so I allow(ed) it.
Due to the fact that our browser runs increasingly slow regardless of the fact that I consistantly delete cookies and history, I'm interested in having a technician who's more familiar with Mac's than myself; run diagnostics on the computer and basically just run a little 'check-up' and make sure it's okay.
I think the slowness of the internet and the unresponsive browser may be due in part to our router which I don't believe is fully equipt to handle the amount of bandwidth that we use. But just to be on the safe side considering this was a very expensive computer, I want it looked into.
So my question is (after all of that mess), if we get a warranty, would it cover general diagnostics? And Which warranty would be best (assuming there are variable kinds)?
If anybody with vast knowledge of Mac's and their upkeep reads this, would you happen to know if there may be something wrong with the computer?
Earlier this morning it smelled a bit like burning plastic, it is generally used all day than off all night, after about ten minutes the smell went away (this was before I turned it on.).
Sorry for the long question!
Thank you.

Definitely get the extended 3 year AppleCare on any iMac or Laptop before the 1 year runs out, even if not related to any of tthese problems.
I'd uninstall those AV Apps pronto, if you really think you need some...

  • Could I get an extended warranty for my iMac..?

My iMac has been constantly freezing and my dad just got it fixed for $500 about a month ago. Our 1 year warranty from the purchase date is over cause it's been about 2 years now since we bought it. Everytime it freezes I gotta put the "install DVD" in and repair the disk, than it works but freezes a couple hours later. I'm so sick of this, how could I get a warranty for this because I can't pay 500 bucks everytime this thing crashes.... I read about the AppleCare and it only says it extends 3 years from purchase date, so would that mean I have only one year left till the warranty is over..? thanks

You can't buy AppleCare. You have to buy it before the end of the first one year warranty.

Nokia does not give extended warranty except perhaps in some promo. The dealer you bought it from may offer you extended warranty with them. Apart from that, none.

Well I assume that if the laptop is under warranty you should be able to get service for it. You can check the warranty status at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=LOOK-WARNTY#sw  That should tell you what the terms of your warranty are. If it is an international warranty you can get service at your local lenovo distributor. My t61 for example has a 3 year warranty that is valid in Turkey,. But also I have 1 year international, 2 years pan-Europeand and 3 year Turkish warranty. That was one ofthe stipulations in the contract when our thinkpads were purchased....

  • Should I get a warranty for my beats by Dre?

I got the wireless studio beats by Dre for 320 dollars since I matched it with Walmart so I saved about 80 dollars but the clerk told me I can't get a warranty since the beats I got are a limited edition and it is out dated. She said I have 15 days to return them. Should I just kee the beats without the warranty? Or should I return them?

    Hello Lakeeshow310,
I have had many customers express their love for the Beats Studio Wireless headphones, and I've heard very few complaints about their performance. I'm also glad you were able to get the best deal on them by taking advantage of our Price Match Guarantee!
Regrettably, as of early January, Best Buy is no longer offering Geek Squad Protection Plans on any Beats headphones. This means that the only warranty on the headphones is through the manufacturer. I don't imagine you will have any issues with them, but if you choose to take another route and choose a different pair of headphones, you can always make a return or exchange within our Return/Exchange Promise policy.
Best wishes and enjoy the new headphones!

  • Think it is about time to get internet security for new iMac. appreciate recommendation of product

am interested in getting security for my imac g5. dont know of a good product. Have eset on my pc's is highly rated.

There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • Looking for a little more info on Playstation 3 on Apple 20" display

Sorry to ask for more info on this. I did find some other threads, but looking for a bit more direction.
First, let me say I have a bunch of old tube TV's and am looking to purchase a Playstation 3. Using Playstation 3 on a tube TV seems kind of stupid, especially when I have a great LCD monitor sitting right on my desktop.
I looked at solution from Elgato. However they said they are not making any more units and when it sells out it is gone. So I am a little weary of purchasing something that may no longer be supported. Their solution does provide video capture and DVR capabilities as well, which I could also use.
Other then that, I am wondering if there are any other solutions that people could recommend. I do plan on buying a LCD or Plasma TV in the near future, but until then, I would like to purchase a Playstation 3. Just looking for any advice of any kind from others. Thanks.

I have the same 20 inch Apple Display. If you have the newer DVI right?
if so HDMI to DVI will not work well EyeTV from Elgato is still in the Mac store near me I have the 200 FireWire you want the 250 USB2 to do live. I have had the 200 FW for three years it is great.
Having said that I did buy The Mitsubishi LCD LT-46231 : 46"
1080p LCD Flat Panel HDTV ($4,600)
I love it for computer use it was made for it. The HDTV is so good with cable and better with Blue-Ray which your PS3 has!

I would if you don't want to spend allot on a 1080p LCD (being more then 2k) The Mitsubishi LT-37131 LCD Flat Panel HDTV ($1,699) . Sony & Samsung both are the same LCD. Mitsubishi is better then Samsung/Sony allot better when used with a computer (it is the only new LCD maker that has a VGA & DVI port just for Computers)
Both of the Mitsubishi Link's you will like as one is a money saver.

  • What do you need to bring to get the warranty for your mac if you didnt get it with the mac?

plese help me i really need to know what i need to bring inorder to get warranty

Just to add in case this is what you were asking. You automatically have warranty coverage for one year from date of purchase or date of shipping. If you are bringing your Mac in for repair to an Apple Store or AASP, they can check to see your warranty coverage from the serial #. It shouldn't be necessary to bring your receipt, but it probably wouldn't hurt to have it with you, just in case.
This is apart from AppleCare, which has already been discussed.

  • Deleted Garageband off my 2007 iMac Intel and no longer have the original reinstallation disk and I don't wan't to buy Garageband again. Is there any way to get it back for free?

Any help? I wouldn't mind any links to where I can install Garageband for free even if it's not from Apple. (Currently running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and will be updating the software tomorrow on February 13th to Snow Leapord 10.6)

If you don't want to purchase the latest version, you have to call Apple to get replacement DVDs for the iMac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
When you receive the discs, just insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 2 and install GarageBand.
If you have a Time Machine backup, you can use it to restore GarageBand. First, open Finder and select Applications on the sidebar. Then, open Time Machine app and navigate through your backups to restore the application

  • Do I need to keep the box for my iMac?

Hi, does anyone know if there is anything in the Apple Care agreement or any other aspect of my warranty that requires me to keep the box for my iMac, will I ever have to send it back to Apple or will they always send an engineer out to it?
The box is huge, it will not go through the hatch into the loft and I am fed up of moving it about in my garage.

Yes, I am trying to find somewhere to store it.
Is it ever likely that to get a repair for my iMac that apple would ask want it shipped back to them, in which case I would need the box?

  • Warranty for laptop

my parents bought me a laptop as a graduation gift i really love it...my prob is that i did not get a warranty for it..can i still get one eventhough it is been over 6 months?

You cannot purchase from Best Buy directly anymore for that extended warranty since it has been 6 months.
The best you can do now is purchase an extended warranty directly from the manufacturer.

  • New warranty for Out-of-warranty macbook

I forget to buy the applecare for my macbook pro when i purchase it 2 years ago and now my warranty have expired. I need to repair my macbook pro badly knowing that the cost to repair apple products is expensive. Is there any way i can get a warranty for my macbook pro?

You can only get AppleCare if your MacBook is in warranty, so now you can't extend your warranty. Unfortunately, you will have to pay this repair

  • Yesterday I purchased a new ipod classic to replace one that had worn out. The price was $179. I wonder if I am eligible for the extended warranty for $59. Can't seem to navigate through the apple support option to get answer. Anyone know?

yesterday I purchased a new ipod classic to replace one that had worn out. The price was $179. I wonder if I am eligible for the extended warranty for $59. Can't seem to navigate through the apple support option to get answer. Anyone know?

Put in the serial number but was not offered an extended apple care plan. I guess if you purchase a new one because your old one is out of warranty you get a deal for $179 but you don't get a chance for an extended warranty. You don't get a new box or earbuds, just a brand new iPod. Good deal but since my first died under warranty, got a new one for free, second one I smashed the screen and got a new one for (I don't remember) and now the hard drive went and I paid $179 for a new one, I was hoping to get an extended warranty. But I guess not...
    Thank you!
