Planning to upgrade to 8GB of RAM. Which is my best option for my Mid-2010 MacBook white (model 7,1)?

Macbook white (MID 2010)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo,
2 GB 1067 MHz DDR 3 (Wanted to upgrade to 8GB)
Just upgraded to iOS 10.7.5 from snow leopard.
Reason for upgrade: Since the OS was upgraded, all process seems to be slower than before.

According to mactracker.ca database (among other) your mid-2010 MacBook white
can use a bit more RAM and likely worth at least 8GB, or more, upgrade for OS X.
And the computer also could be upgraded to Mavericks OS X 10.9.4, if desired.
Maximum Memory    16 GB (Actual) 4 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
•MacBook: How to remove or install memory
For a correct match for parts, you can see information on the Model Identifier and
build year series from crucial.com or macsales.com sites; these offer quality RAM
and upgrades, if you match the parts with your model exactly & correctly.
OWC (macsales) also has fair SSD options, with good technologies, if needed.
Matching sets of RAM tend to do best, and be wary of similar numbered parts that
are not correct; some cheap low-spec PCs use those and don't know any better.
PS: concerning issues with slowness, there is a performance guide among other
Tech Guides here: http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/ also, the basic issue
with a too full hard disk drive, and other saved content that may be best saved to
an externally enclosed hard disk drive, as an accessible archive, is recommended.
An all new installation can be helpful, too. If you have unused old applications or any
anti-virus, remove them. Check the adware removal guide, and other info there.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Is 8gb of RAM in one memory slot possible for a mid-2009 2.53GHz MacBookPro5,4?

I have a mid-2009 2.53GHz MacBookPro5,4 and recently bank 1 stopped recognizing any ram installed in the slot (similar to this issue https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4263981).
I originally thought it was a bad module and tried different 2x4GB paired ram kits but same issue. Only one bank seems to work now. I really need at least 8gb or ram for work and I'm not quite ready to shell out for a new laptop. So I'm wondering if I can salvage this machine by putting a single 8gb module on the one bank that still works.
    Has anyone tried this?

An interesting question.  I found this which you may find of interest:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1045517
It seems to suggest that it may, but I see it a bit of a crap shoot.
    Ciao.

  • Which is the right Firmware for a Mid 2007 MacBook?

I'm preparing a recently bought 2.16 GHz Black MacBook for Boot Camp and need to upgrade the Firmware. The pages on the Apple website are fairly clear about procedures, but not about which Firmware I need for which MacBook...
They have two entries (no mention of the mid 2007 model I have):
    MacBook (Late 2006)
    MacBook
How can I tell which MacBook I have got? I only bought it this week, but the Firmware it has seems to have a higher number than the ones listed as being the "latest" Firmware... Looking at entries for other Macs, later models seem to appear underneath older models in the list on the Apple website, but you can never be sure unless references are explicit (and they aren't).
My confusion is based on there being no "Mid 2007" model listed, and on the Firmware serial numbers:
    *Apple's "Latest" Firmware:*
    _MacBook (Late 2006)_
    MB21.00A5.B00
    1.13f3
    MacBook
    MB11.0061.B03
    1.4f12
    *Installed Firmware:*
MB21.00A5.B06 (seems to be a higher number - and therefore newer? - than the "latest" one...)
    1.17f0
Can anyone shed any light on this please? It is the EFI firmware update that may (or may not be) relevant - the SMC firmware update is only for the original MacBook...
    TIA

Thanks Doug, that's helpful. In the instructions for Boot Camp it specifically says to check for, download and install the latest firmware before commencing an installation of Boot Camp. I always follow instructions!
It would be helpful if what you say was also on the Apple Support pages of the website, just to confirm to visitors there that things are correct. It really wouldn't hurt them to dot the "i"s and cross the "t"s to make sure there is no possibility of having to "guess" that because it isn't listed, you don't need it. I am sure lots of people have already downloaded the wrong type, judging from some of the many firmware questions on the site. Sometimes, a confirmation of reality is necessary, you know, like getting an aircraft ready for flight and going through a check list for every single thing.

  • Which is the best Option for Time Capsule setup.

Got my 2Tb time capsule today, burning to get home to set the whole system up but I have a few questions i'd like help with befor I jump in...
    Here is my setup.
    1) Cable internet connection running wifi through a Netgear WNR 2000 Which is a Wireless N device..
    2) 2TB Time Capsule just unwrapped.
    3) Macbook Pro
    4) iphone
    5) Hp office laptop running XP Sp 3
5)Really complicated appartment layout which makes a single Wifi base station battle for coverage in the entire appartment.
Ok so here is what I was thinking..
Keep the Netgear as the base station and use the Time Capsule as a Bridge in my office thus extending the range of my existing network..
    1) Will using the TC on a wireless network as a repeater half my connection speed while doubling my coverage?? In that case it might be worth it..
    2) Do I have any reason to believe I could get better coverage using the TC as the Base Station and trying to virtually impossible task of setting up the Netgear as a bridge?
    3) Any ideas on other options open to me?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
+1) Will using the TC on a wireless network as a repeater half my connection speed while doubling my coverage?? In that case it might be worth it..+
Unfortunately, the Time Capsule will only "extend" a wireless network if the network has been created by another Apple "n" router. So the Netgear would not be compatible with the Time Capsule for this purpose.
If you could connect the Netgear and Time Capsule together using an ethernet cable, you would be able to create one large wireless network.
+2) Do I have any reason to believe I could get better coverage using the TC as the Base Station and trying to virtually impossible task of setting up the Netgear as a bridge?+
Not sure about "better coverage", but the Time Capsule would create dual band networks operating at both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz so faster devices could connect at 5 GHz for maximum speed and slower devices would connect to the 2.4 GHz band.
In addition, if the Time Capsule connects directly to your cable modem, you could enable the "guest" network feature if you needed that function. (However, if the Time Capsule is configured in the network as a "bridge", the guest network feature cannot be enabled).
On a quick glance, your Netgear router does not appear to be a simultaneous dual band device. If that's the case, you could configure it to expand either the 2.4 GHz band or 5 GHz band (assuming it will handle 5 GHz) for wider wireless coverage. But, the connection between devices would need to be via ethernet cable, and as you point out, the Netgear would need to configured as a "bridge" in this type of setup.
If running the ethernet cable is simply not possible, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task using the AC wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal. While not as good as a straight ethernet cable, this type of connection would still yield better performance than wireless only, if the devices were compatible.

i want to upgrade my macbook pro's ram from 4 to 6 or 8gb. mine is mid 2010 macbook pro..
    Configuration
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

will i have any problem like compatibility??
    thank you.

A Mid 2010 MacBook Pro supports 16 GB of memory without any problem. Macs are "special" about memory because some brands work without any problem and others don't work. That's why I recommend you to buy the memory from OWC or Crucial in order to make sure that you get compatible memory > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

  • How much should I sell a Mid-2010 Macbook without a HDD (with 8GB of RAM) for?

I'm planning on selling my old Mid-2010 MacBook, however it doesn't have a HDD. It does have 8GB of RAM which I installed myself. I'm aware that all one needs to do is buy a HDD and install OSX on it and it will be perfectly functional and therefore hope it will still fetch a couple of hundred pounds or more. Any advice would be greatfully appreciated.

To maximise the profit, I'd buy a hard drive to put in it and I stall a fresh installation from the original discs. HDD's aren't that expensive these days, and this way you'll avoid putting of some people if listed on eBay as you will be appealing to a wider audience.
For the cost of a drive, you'll undoubtedly get a higher return than if you sell as is. IMHO.

You need to purchase 8 GBs as two 4 GB modules. Must meet these requirments:
    Maximum Memory
    8.0 GB
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

  • Looking to upgrad RAM in mid-2010 Macbook

I am looking to add an additional 2GB of RAM in my mid-2010 Macbook or just put 2x2GB of new RAM in.  Can anyone tell me where and what exactly to buy? Thanks

Your model does indeed support 8 GB, even if officially 4 GB only. Now, you must check if you RAM modules are indeed the ones required. In your screnshot, I can see 1 + 1 GB, this must be the original configuration, right?

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between  Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated

  • Why can't I use my mid 2010 macbook pro with 8GB memoir and NVIDIA GEForce GT 330M 256MB to run 3D in photoshop CC?

Why can't I use my mid 2010 macbook pro with 8GB memoir and NVIDIA GEForce GT 330M 256MB to run 3D in photoshop CC?

    3-D is very memory intensive.
    System requirements | Photoshop
    Mac OS
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.7, v10.8, or v10.9
2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
3.2 GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
1024x768 display (1280x800 recommended) with 16-bit color and 512 MB of VRAM (1 GB recommended)**
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
Internet connection and registration are necessary for required software activation, membership validation, and access to online services.*
** 3D features are disabled and some Mercury Graphics Engine enhanced features may not work with less than 512 MB VRAM. Read the Help article.
Bottom line, you don't have enough VRAM

  • Upgrading hard drive in mid 2010 MacBook Pro

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro and was looking to upgrade the internal hard drive.
I saw several suggestions on here and with that I found two hard drives.
I just didn't know which would be better or what the differences between them were.
    The first one is this:
    http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-7200RPM-Internal/dp/B0097LG9U8/re f=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1393716348&sr=1-1&keywords=hitachi+1tb+internal+hard+d rive+2.5
And the other one is this:
    http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-Internal-0J22423/dp/B00B4QESVQ/re f=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1393716348&sr=1-3&keywords=hitachi+1tb+internal+hard+d rive+2.5
I was just wondering if these two are just the same thing or if they are different?
If they are different which would be the better choice?

    Mattress6450,
I don’t know if they’re ultimately the same drive or not. The first drive (HGST part number 0S03563) is sold at retail as a “mobile internal drive kit”, and the second drive (HGST part number 0J22423) is sold at retail as a “mobile hard drive”. They’re both SATA III, 2.5-inch form factor, 7200 RPM, 1 TB hard drives with three-year warranties. You’ll need to dig around the technical specifications at hgst.com to see if there are specific technical differences between them.
