Play Audio through ATV with my HDTV off?

I've searched the threads without too much luck on this topic. I don't have an ATV yet, but I plan to run an HDMI cable from the ATV to my TV. I also plan to run a toslink optical audio cable from the ATV to an available input on my stereo receiver.
Can someone confirm if I can kick off a playlist from ATV on my HDTV, but then shut the darned TV off and listen to the music through my receiver? I don't want to needlessly burn my TV out when I just want to listen to tunes.
Thanks for your help.

It works. I use optical digital to my Yamaha and turn off my HDMI connected Toshiba. I've even sent Apple a suggestion that they should support a remote control sequence that justs starts a shuffle play without the need to turn on the monitor to go through menus.
BTW, if you always leave the TV in the same menu state when you put it in standby then just entering the remote buttons as if you were seeing the menu on the monitor does work, without actually turning the monitor on.

  • Can I use Optical Audio alongside a speakerless monitor to play audio through speakers?

I have an Apple TV 3 and so far I am relatively pleased. However.. I have no sound, this just about renders my Apple TV useless. Is it possible to use the Optical Audio cable to play sound from films, music etc. while still having the Apple TV connected to the Monitor via HDMI? Do you have any suggestions as to what speakers would be good? (looking at around £50 - £100) I was thinking of getting some of the Bose Companion 2 monitor speakers and then using a DAC to play audio from the Apple TV to the speakers. Would this work? If not, does anybody have any other suggestions?
P.S. I can't plug speakers into my monitor for some absurd, annoying reason unbeknown to society

My ATV is connected to the tv with hdmi
My optical is connected to my stereo
I mute my tv and only play out of the stereo

Hi i recently noticed my Pavilion dv7 entertainment notebook won't play sound through the tv anymore. The picture is on the tv but sound is running through the laptop speakers? I never had a problem with this until now. When i open up the sound options, the ATI HDMI output says it's not connected and so it wont let me select it, but it is connected? Please help?

    Hi Sez,
Try using Recovery Manager to reinstall your AMD Graphics Driver package as this will also reinstall the AMD HDMI Audio driver- the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the relevant document on the link below.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 8.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 7
    Recovery Manager - Windows Vista
After the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook.

  • Flash Player 10 is not playing audio from Youtube with Vista and IE

Since installing FP10, I cannot get audio when playing YouTube video. I'm running Vista with SP2 and IE on an HP laptop. Flash 0 on my XP desktop plays audio fine, so I'm guessing its a setting on my laptop which needs changing back to what it was before the upgrade to FP10...any ideas please? I have uninstalled and the reinstalled FP10 as per other posts on this forum, but no success.

    I too am experiencing this
    [edit]
My problem was that I was not getting flash audio at all, including local publishes out of the IDE.  The problem was that my Windows Audio service had stopped (for some reason).
    To check :
(classic view) :: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services >
    (non-classic) :: Computer (right click)  > Manage > Services and Applications > services >
(one of the above, then) :: [scroll down to 'Windows Audio'] > r-click 'properties', general tab, set the start-up type to manual (in the dropdown), and click the start button on the next line.

  • Play music through computer with out itues

i just got my finance a 1gig nano for her birthday and we loaded songs on the ipod at home. now she wants to play her music at work through her work computer. she is not allowed to load software on her computer at work, so she cant load itues on it. is there anyway to play the music through the computer without using itunes?
    thanks in advance.

I'm afraid not, you need iTunes to access the iPod so you can play it through the computer. If there is no iTunes installed the iPod will only charger from the USB port though you could play it through earphones while it's charging.

Just following-up on this posting from a week or two ago and another a few days later about the problems with catch-up TV.  We were disappointed with the lack of service, but as we can get most of the catch-up we want on the Sony Bravia TV, hadn't pursued it with BT perhaps hoping things would improve.
Got a phone call last week from BT asking if we'd been able to set up the YouView Box OK, which we had.  Mentioned the unsatisfactory service.  She immediately put me through to the BT technical call centre in India where I spoke to guy called Rajiv or something like that.  Asked a few questions and then asked me to switch off the YouView Box (back panel switch) and do a hard-reset on the Homehub Router.  Once this had been done, and the YouView box switched back on.  The service ran fine and has done so since.  I don't know if Rajiv did anything in the network or whether this is just some problem (he called it a "glitch") in the router/YouView box.  Funny that that the speedtest and streaming to the Sony TV works OK.
He phoned back a couple of days later to see if we'd had any further problems.  Overall good service.  It would be interesting to know from a technical point of view what the problem was and how it was solved.  It shouldn't be necessary to reset boxes in this way.

  • Captured video only plays audio through one speaker

I captured video from a mini dv and when I play the clip in FCP the audio only plays out of one speaker and it only shows on one audio meter in FCP. I captured this video with a DSR-20 and it displayed NS Audio on the screen. Both meters were playing on the deck and in FCP while previewing and also through my headphones. Does anyone know what I need to do this to correct this?

First I'd verify how the audio was captured. Did you have it set for Ch 1 + Ch 2, or Stereo, or Ch 1 [only], or Ch 2 [only] or as a mono mix?
Next, verify that you actually had two channels of audio on the tape, not just one channel.
Assuming that there are two channels on the tape, load the captured clip into the Viewer and see if there is an audio waveform on both channels. If there is, check to see if both channels are panned the same - if they are, pan one left and one right or both to center.
If there were no waveforms on one of the channels, try capturing a short segment of the same tape using another Firewire cable.

  • [Solved] ALSA - Play Audio As Is With No Conversion

    Hello all,
I have an issue with ALSA I hope you can help me sort out.
For the sake of this post, I'll refer to everything as if played by mplayer2, since the output is much easier this way.
Basically, I want to play everything "as-is", in regards to samplerate and format.
That is, playing music at 16bit/44.1Khz as such, playing movie audio at 16bit/48Khz as such, playing HD audio at 24bit/96Khz as such and so on.
Now, my first attempt was trying to access the HW directly using mplayer's --ao=alsa:device=hw=0.0 and not limiting the format.
Both samples played at correct sample rate but were outputted at 16 bit, since the hardware supposedly do not support floating point, and the output reverted to default.
Selected audio codec: FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) [libavcodec]
    AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 0.0 kbit/0.00% (ratio: 0->176400)
[AO_ALSA] Format floatle is not supported by hardware, trying default.
    AO: [alsa] 44100Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Selected audio codec: Uncompressed PCM [pcm]
    AUDIO: 96000 Hz, 2 ch, s24be, 4608.0 kbit/100.00% (ratio: 576000->576000)
[AO_ALSA] Format floatle is not supported by hardware, trying default.
    AO: [alsa] 96000Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Note the Format floatle is not supported by hardware part.
This seemed a bit weird as using alsa without accessing the hardware directly (going through vmix), the output is indeed floating point.
That is, playing with --ao=alsa I get the following (obviously everything is sampled to the default 48Khz):
Selected audio codec: FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) [libavcodec]
    AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 0.0 kbit/0.00% (ratio: 0->176400)
AO: [alsa] 48000Hz 2ch floatle (4 bytes per sample)
Selected audio codec: Uncompressed PCM [pcm]
    AUDIO: 96000 Hz, 2 ch, s24be, 4608.0 kbit/100.00% (ratio: 576000->576000)
AO: [alsa] 48000Hz 2ch floatle (4 bytes per sample)
Note that the output format is floatle.
So, I tried specifying --ao=alsa:device=hw=0.0 --format=floatle, only for it to fail as in the first case and reverting to default 16 bit and correct sample rate.
Specifying the required format directly works for the flac sample (s16le, same as the default) but fails for the HD sample (s24be), as expected - I can remember from my Windows days not so long ago I had to output 24 bit audio padded as 32 bit for it to work.
This lead me to my next attempt: --ao=alsa:device=hw=0.0 --format=s32le, which as far as I understand is 32 bit, but not floating point, which isn't exactly what I need.
Anyway, both files played fine with this mode for the few seconds I tried (assuming the remaining bits were padded with zeros), but real-life files (such as movie soundtrack) produced noticeable audio distortions (cracks and pops of all kinds).
So, I'm back to where I began.
Seems like I need to specify the hardware (device=..._) to get correct sample rate, but then I can't get correct format, or let it go via dmix and then the sample rate is wrong.
Now, having giving it a bit more thought, I realized dmix is outputting anything successfully as floating point, so I guess it pads whatever bits needed with zeros, which is just fine.
Assuming the above is correct, is it possible to write something in my .asoundrc file so that input samplerate is preserved?
I'm not very optimistic as it kind of against the whole idea of software mixing, but who knows..
If there's any way of convincing ALSA that my card is perfectly fine when being fed with floating point directly (device=...), that's an option too.
Bottom line, is there a way to make everything sent to card as-is?
    That was long... sorry
    Thanks, Adam.

So yes, your hardware doesn't support floating point. Don't compare the hw device to the more higher level interfaces (default, surround, plughw). The higher level interfaces provide additional sample formats which will be converted on the fly to the specific hw device capabilities.
adam777 wrote:Bottom line, is there a way to make everything sent to card as-is?
That would depend on the input format. Even some 24bit audio files may need some additional padding. If you want to know what your card supports, compile and run the following program: http://www.volkerschatz.com/noise/alsacap.c.
For example, this the output on my machine:
    Card 0, ID `Intel', name `HDA Intel'
    Device 0, ID `ALC268 Analog', name `ALC268 Analog', 1 subdevices (1 available)
2 channels, sampling rate 44100..192000 Hz
    Sample formats: S16_LE, S32_LE
    Subdevice 0, name `subdevice #0'

  • MBP 13 (mid-late 2010) still won't play audio through HDMI

I would like to connect the MBP 13" I bought in 12/2010 to my HP w2408h 24" monitor through HDMI, both audio and video. I bought a Moshi mini-DP to HDMI adaptor, and hooked everything up like I was supposed to.
When I go to System Preferences > Sound to try to select HDMI as the audio out, it tells me that "The selected device has no output controls." Mind you, I've tried three different HDMI cables, including the Vizio cable I just bought (with gold-plated connectors, natch!). Furthermore, when I try to run audio from the MBP's headphone jack to the monitor's audio in port, there's nothing there!
FWIW I'm running 10.6.6, and didn't try this set up before I upgraded from 10.6.5
    What to do? Please advise.

Mind the bump, but I'm having this exact same problem and nothing I try is helping.
I have a mid-2010 MBP, so I know it supports audio. The video works just fine, but when I open up the sound and change the output setting to my tv, it also says, "The selected device has no output controls." But I KNOW that the cable and my laptop work with the audio, because I can play the sound effects under the sound preferences through my tv speakers, but nothing else. Which is REALLY confusing. There's some static coming from my tv speakers, but that's it.
If it matters I'm running 10.8.2.
Help please, and thanks in advance!
Edit... So apparently iTunes works just fine as well. WHY can't I play anything from Chrome? Ugh.

  • No sound when playing music through dock with third party apps

    Hello,
When I try to play music on my Iphone (3G, OS 3) through dock connected external speaker devices (like the B&W Zeppelin) using third party apps, i get no sound at all. Example of external third party apps are : wifi radios, alarm-clock programs, video viewers,...
So i get no sound at all through the dock connector using that kind of apps. Sound is ok only with Ipod, Itune (or other apple apps).
Has anyone encountered similar problems ? Any solution would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have done that from the first day (contacting the makers of 3rd party apps)- They say they use standard components provided by Apple. So I would like to know if anybody has succeded in listening, for example, any internet radio app though a dock station connection (zeppelin, or whatever speaker system that is not using the jack), or is this functionnaly actually blocked by Apple.
    Thanks for your answers.

  • +5W power consumption when playing audio on X201 with Linux

    Hi folks!
My Thinkpad X201’s power consumption raises from ~10W to ~15W when playing any kind of audio under linux. This problem does not seem to be CPU-related (for example when streaming with pulseaudio over ethernet instead of playing directly on the X201 the power consumption does hardly increase) and does not occur under Windows. I’m using Fedora x86_64 16 with Kernel v3.2.1 but it also occured with a v3.2.1 vanilla kernel; Fedora 14 and 15; Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 and so on.
I’ve allready posted my problem several months ago here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=99246 but haven’t gotten any useful answers.
I measured power consumption with powertop but also confirmed with readings from /sys:
    while true; do bc -l <<< "$(cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/current_now)/10^6*$(cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/voltage_now)/10^6"; sleep 1; done

Is anyone able to confirm this problem or does anyone have a solution? I’m really desperate since I often use my Thinkpad as a big but wonderful portable music player (with headphones of course! Don’t want to annoy my fellow trainpassengers …).
    Thanks in advance
    Michael

  • Play Audio On Webpage With Button Click

Hello everyone. I'm new to Flash, so please bear with me.
I'm creating a language learning website, and wish to add
audio to it for all vocabulary words. I want the audio to be
compatible across browsers and simply play when a button is
clicked, without any controls or media players opening up.
From what I hear, it sounds like Flash is a good way to go
and would do the trick. It's just a matter of converting all the
mp3s to Flash. The mp3 file size is already relatively small (1-2
seconds in length each and about 30kb in size I believe).
How could I create a button that plays the mp3 when it is
    clicked? I was
researching the topic and came across a few things.
What I am looking for is almost identical to this:
    Site
    demonstrating audio buttons
While I could jump right in and use her example, it doesn't
quite work. With hers, everything needs to be in different folders,
    and I would need a different button - her's is a little big. I
can't put everything in different folders, because I will have
hundreds of audio files. It would be much easier to put them all in
an audio folder with different filenames.
I also was reading at another site that it deals with
Javascript controlling the Flash - when you click the button it
plays the swf file. Since I am very new to Flash, I'm not exactly
sure of what all it can and cannot do. The site also mentioned not
all browsers allow Javascript to control Flash files. Again,
however, I'm unsure of how accurate the information still remains.
The browsers were older versions, and they were talking about how
to do it in Flash 5 and Dreamweaver 4. Furthermore, the example
located at the above link does not use any Javascript.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do this? While I am
beginning to learn Flash, I doubt I will understand what to do all
on my own for a while, and I need to get the site finished as soon
as possible. The audio is practically all that is left before the
site launch. Like I said, I'm looking for a way to add audio to a
webpage, that is played (without media players opening up, etc)
with the push of a button, and also will load quickly, since there
were be about 20 audio files per page.

Here is some info on sound linkage, not sure if this is what
you want but its a start:

  • Getting audio through TV with Mini-display

I recently purchased and just received a mini display-to-HDMI cable for my MBP. I plugged it in and the video pops right up on the TV and everything works fine excpet the audio will only play through the computer's speakers or things hooked in through the computer. Is there a setting or something I'm missing? I've checked the cable and MBP model and both are audio compatible. Any help would be awesome!

If you go into system preferences, sound, select the output tab and click on your TV/Display name it should put the audio out through the TV.

  • Known issue: Cortana does not play audio through the default playback device (Windows 10 Insider Preview SDK and tools, April 2015 release)

When getting audio feedback from Cortana on a device with multiple playback endpoints (e.g., a device with a headset and an internal speaker), the playback may occur on the incorrect device. For example, Cortana may not send audio to the default device
after the default has been changed in the control panel.

There is no workaround for this issue.
