Play back quality

Hi
When I burn a dvd it plays back with no problems on my mac but on my set top dvd it seems to jitter and shimmer.
suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.
Trevor

The following threads disccusss how to maximize DVD compability, how to get good quallity and "jitters". Not quite sure which one applies, if you could describe the issue better perhaps?

  • Media play-back quality on my macbook from my Android phone

    Hi all,
I really, really hope someone can help me here.
I have a brand new Samsung Note 3. The problem I'm having is the play-back quality when I transfer videos I've recorded from the phone on to my macbook pro.
The video just lags but the audio is fine. Infuriating.
Initially, the video play-back on the phone was an issue but I have sorted that out. I tried transfering the videos back on to the phone and the play back is fine. It's just via the macbook it isn't so.
I have tried playing the videos via Quicktime and VLC media player - both the same.
    Help! (please)

I've had good luck using Handbrake >  http://download.cnet.com/HandBrake/3000-2194_4-10808250.html

  • Poor play back quality

Anybody have trouble with a classic 120 gb having a skipping static sound randomly during play back? A HD going bad?

Here are some things to try and a few questions...
    1)  Does the iPod do this with another set of headphones?
              a) If yes then try playing music through a docking station.  If it still does it, then your iPod is probably heading south.
              b) If no then your headphones are shot.
If you don't get static through the docking station, then you 3.5 mm connector is either dirty or failing.  To clean it use a damp q-tip.  I don't know if alcohol or the like would be a good idea.
    Hope your Classic keeps rockin'

  • Dvd play back on Tv is 4:3 , also poor  playback quality

I recently purchased a jvc everio HDD, Along with that I purchased elements 7.  I am having many issues with the software. I am new to editing but have researched all the posts and done alot of home work. I have read the all the post about mod files. But I am more confused
Issue one... When I burn a dvd and play it back on any dvd player the video is compressed back to a 4:3 aspect. I have noticed that the video is squeezed and everything appears to be skinny when viewing.
To clarify , My camera films in 16:9 ratio. When I set up My new project I choose . Hard disk/widescreen (this setting say it is for video files produced by jvc everio). When Ii am done I choose burn/dolby widescreen.
when I import my video clips to my pc, it saves them as mov.files. which I understand is a quicktime format... is this causeing the issue.
I was convinced it was a camera issue. So I burnt some clips using my pc burner program and played them on my tv and they were in 16:9 and played just fine and the video looked amazing..
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Issue two.... When I bring my video's in I loose alot of quality.  Also my clips hae glitches in them , some are green clitches and others are neg art of other clips . I played back on my media player ,these glitches are not there.
    ~~~~~~~~~
Issue three..... When I import my clips , the PRE viewer is very pixelly ( like really bad webcam bad) it is so bad that I actually took the sony camcorder back, thinking that the issue was my camera. I then exchanged for the jvc..... I have watched many utube tutorials on youtube... and have been able to see that the players are not as pixelly as mine....
Help....... I am so frustrated with purchaseing software and having problems.

With MOD files are imported into Premiere Elements they are not properly interpreted as 16:9... they will appear as 4:3 on the timeline and if burnt to DVD will play back as 4:3. You need to right click on the clips in the project Media Panel and select Interpret footage and then Conform To and select the 16:9 widescreen preset.
Not sure why it is saying the videos are .mov files, did you do ant conversion before importing. Regarding the glitchy distorted frames, try renaming the file  in the Program Files folder for Premier Elements "ImporterFastMPEG.prm" to something else. PE7 will not use it then and this should eliminate you bad frame problems.
The Premiere Elements viewer does not show the final quality of the video but should not be that bad. Did you render the timeline by pressing the Enter button on your keyboard... this needs to be done for non DV-AVI format video or when you place effects/transitions/title on the clips. The clips will playback without rendering but playback will be much smoother and cleaning after rendering.
Most of these issues can be overcome be converting your video to DV-AVI before importing to Premiere Elements. The "box" says PE7 plays with many file types but it struggles with many and MOD files is one format that it does struggle with. DV-AVI is handled natively and gives no problems. Can you import the clips into the software that came with the camcorder and export to DV-AVI? Otherwise you could use MPEG_Streamclip to convert them. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
Also a lot of these issues are discussed in this thread. Dont know if you saw this one. http://forums.adobe.com/message/1757486#1757486

  • How to export video that plays back smoothly?

I have an HD project in Premiere Pro CS4 that is about 9 minutes.  When I render out to Flash for the web, once it's all buffered it plays back real smooth.  So the client wants a copy of the "file" to be played on his computer running Windows and Windows Media Player which he will attach to a large 55" flatscreen via HDMI at a trade show.  I rendered out several different files ranging from .MOV to H.264 in various resolutions (1920x1080, 1280x720p, 720x480 wide, iPod, etc.) and tested them on my Dell Inspiron i3 laptop running Windows 7 Home 64 bit connected to my 46" tv via HDMI to simulate what the client would have.
The 1920 file was huge (2GB) as one would expect and plays back jerky
The 1280x720p .MP4 file was about 400mb which I was excited about, but plays back jerky
The other two (.MOV and .MP4) at 720x480 play back smoothly
So I'm guessing that it's either a disk / processor issue with playing back the larger files or combo of that and the graphics card or am I having an issue with the way the settings are set in the export options?
The box I'm producing the video on is a Mac i7 quad-core, 8GB RAM and a nice ATI card.  The full rez versions of the files play fine on it.  BluRay is out too.  Don't have a burner and they don't have a player.
So what file format and settings can I render out that will yield smooth(er) results at larger resolutions for my intended output?
    Thanks,
    Steve

And the answer is.... converting the footage to WMV.  Tada.  I exported a nice huge HD 1920x1080 H.264 file and then used iSkysoft Video Converter to convert it to WMV.  Now the only thing is that iSkysoft Coverter only allows 1280x720 as it's largest resolution for WMVs, but even so, the quality on a 46" LCD TV coming from a laptop via HDMI looks pretty sharp.  The video was running very smooth (and it was running off a USB key <g>) to boot.
The file size of the original HD H.264 file:  9.02GB
The file size of the converted WMV: 437.5MB
All in all I'm happy with this breakthrough.  I was "this" close to buying a BluRay burner, media and telling the client to use a BluRay player.
Now... I love what I got, but it could be better.  Does anyone know of a good video converter that will convert WMVs to true HD resolution (1920x1080) or is that 1280x720 a WMV limit?
    Thanks all,
    Steve

  • Captured clips are playing back at least TWICE as fast

Hey all- I am capturing HD footage from a JVC Pro HD camera - footage shot at 24P. Everything seems fine with the capture (except for the fact that there is no device control - only capture now), but when I play back the captured clips I hear the audio playing at normal speed but the video is playing back at leat at twice the speed - all actors are in FAST motion. I hear the crew and director speaking, getting ready to shoot as I watch the scene start and speed through and end right as the clip ends.
Any ideas? Is it a setting on the OUTPUT for the camera?
    Thanks for any help.

Neither Final Cut Express nor Final Cut Pro support
720p24 material. You need a product like HDVxDV to
    bring it in.
    Tom-
Thanks for getting back to me last night. You seem to be a master in these parts. I am new here. I am really a director and writer but through my production company I have done a number of things in FCP over the years, always without any problems. That is until the introduction of HD and 24p at which time I sort of started saying to our amazing editor "whatver you say" and clouding over with confusion. After I got your message I went and got FCP 5 from the Apple store in an attempt to keep my friend, whose short we were trying to edit, from crying. Once installed and running we had the same issue as we had in FCE HD - the video - in terms of quality - was captured perfectly, but the clips would play back at almost twice the speed that they should have. I tried virtually every easy set-up that pertained to HD and nothing worked. On a few of them I could get an actual Log and Capture window to come up but when I went to play the material via device control there was no image, althoug I could see TC running. A friend suggested that you have to take the captured HD 24p clip and bring it into the timeline and render it for it to work. Is that true? I tried it to no avail. So, he shot on JVC GY-HD 100 at 24p. I now have FCP 5 HD and am considering buying LUMIERE software that purports to streamline this very issue. Any thoughts or suggestions you may have for me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much,

  • Picture breakup when playing back recordings of HD...

As above really, only noticed this since the latest software change but my be coincidental.
I have recently had picture breakup when playing back reordings on BBC1HD and Ch4HD, when I watch the channels live there is no evidence of the breakup and if I check the signal strength on both channels I am getting Signal strength of 78% and quality of 100%
Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions for solutions please?
    Thanks

I think that is what he is saying Alex...
If you think about what I tested, the model seems pretty right...  Delete the room, it does not delete the file from webdav...  So, when the room is re-created, it will play back original content so looks like they are not storing room historical data, i.e. is there a recording, how long etc....
I think it is an great solution to be able to remove completed rooms and FMS pick the old room up from webdav on the fly.  Seems the most logical option.
Nigel, I don't suppose there is any solution of sending the recording to Amazon S3 or other cloud resources rather than the webdav folder?  I think, for those with thousands of recordings, storage could become an issue...  I have looked at the possibility of mapping my box to the S3 bucket but then I am reteiving it to send it to you every time a file is requested which could cause bandwidth issues...
Maybe integrating some sort of API where when setting up the recording, we provide specifics (i.e. an authentication token), to allow the file to be placed there?  Or maybe a slightly different approach would be to provide a cloud front url for picking up the files and the transfer could go on behind the scenes....  Also with the cloud front, distribution would be much quicker as the files could end up closer to the location of the FMS which in turn would create a richer experience with less waiting...
    Anyway, maybe you can advise.
    Thanks for your time.

  • CD-Rs I burn on my iMac skip when played back

Hi there, when I create songs in Garageband and then "send to iTunes" and burn the disc, many of the songs skip randomly. I've tried playing back the disc in multiple stereos and computers, and it's the same thing. The discs are not scratched. What could be the problem?

    Two things to try:
Unless you're using a high quality brand, change the brand you're using (the Superdrives are very finicky about the media - mine only likes Verbatim), and
burn at the slowest speed available (which cuts down on burn errors).

  • FCP plays back tooo slow

Hey Kids, I am running FCP 5.0 on a Mac Pro 2.8 8-core processor on Mac OSX 10.5.2 and it's too sluggish on play back. I have the 8800 NVIDIA card installed from Mac and this should REALLY be fast. My old Mac Power PC G5 1.6 single processor ran it better than this. My setting in FCP should be correct: In system settings I am running things in safe mode (not in RT) Video Quality is Low, Frame rate is Dynamic, so what's wrong? The audio plays back fine but the Canvas view is stuck on one frame until I press stop. Thanks a lot guys....

I know someone was recently looking for the 5.1.4 upgrade and Apple has taken it down from their site...all other searches were fruitless.
You could try finding 5.1.4 or Final Cut Studio 1 on Ebay, but I've never trusted software from Ebay.
Here's the link for upgrading on the apple site...$699

  • FCP 7, maverick, animation million+, iMac play back issue

I have 3 years old iMac, 8Mg RAM duo. poorly handled transparent overlay HD 1920by 1080. It would play and pause in the viewer preview window, slow rendering time. So I got my self the new iMac 27" with 16 MG of ram, quatro. The playback and rendering looks even worse.  Is it bad memory, computer itself, or Maverick is not compatible with FCP7?
    Thanks,

well yeah.  animation codec with alpha (or even without) is NOT a playback format.  It's an uncompressed format for working with full quality video with transparency.
HOWEVER, Apple ProRes 4444 can have an alpha channel and plays back on my system just fine.  As a matter of fact, it will actually play back while keying over background video in fcp7.

  • "Dropped Frames on Playback" - when playing back FCP's Bars+tone

We've been having a problems with one of our edit suites dropping frames when playing back to tape (Edit to tape).
In checking it out, I created a new project and added DCP's PAL Bars and tone to the default sequence. FCP is stopping playback with the "Dropped Frames on Playback" error after 13"-15". I've tried all the usual stuff - trashing FCP prefs, zapping PRAM, repairing preferences etc.
    Has anyone any further suggestions??
RT is set to Safe, with dynamic frame rate and video quality.
The Mac is a Dual 2.66GHz Dual Core Xeon, 4Gb RAM, with an AJA kona lhe card, connected to an XServe Raid via fibre. The tape deck is a DigiBeta M2000.
I've read all the posts I could find, and checked Shane's stock answer #12.
    Cheers

Try creating a new user, log into that and test FCP.
In my case, a new user worked, for awhile.
Through a lot of trial and error and a reinstallation that was ineffectual - properly surmised by a very learned friend of mine, Mr. Sheffield - I found a project to be corrupt. So thoroughly corrupt that it would corrupt FCP and any projects opened downstream which is why my new user worked for awhile. Took me some time to figure out the proper order to open things after a system restart. Looks like I'll be doing a rebuild of the project through xml which shouldn't take to long.
In your case, if a new user doesn't help and you go the reinstallation route, uninstall FC Studio with this jewel of a utility. Many thanks to Jon for writing and distributing. http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/fcsremover_1.0.6released.html

  • How to play back AVCHD video files without jerkiness result?

Hi all, I have an iMac 27" 3.06Ghz as well as the new MacBook Air 13 1.86Ghz, and both have 4GB of RAM. When I tried to play back AVCHD video files (*.mts) recorded from my Canon HF200 HD camcorder, the play back is always jerky and choppy. I have tried various software like Perian for QT, VLC, MPlayer Extended, all have the same result. However, I can play back other 1080p files like MKV and MOV just fine.
Is the jerkiness problem that I am seeing due to underpowered hardware? or is it I am not using the correct software? Note that I am not trying to edit HD videos, I just want to be able to play them back smoothly. I can play the same files on Windows 7 natively without any issues.
I am curious if any of you have the same problem. Please help!
    Thanks in advance.
    Ken

    Swaza,
Just thought I would jump in and share some experiences with .tod and .mod files.
I too have the JVC GZ-HD7 camera and I can confirm that the new version of the MPEG-SC 1.93beta will open and convert .tod to .mov for use with iMovieHD. I am not sure that the files can be used with iMovie08 since I have not tried, but it will work in iMovieHD just like any other qt or .mov file import.
Also, you can use the QTpro plugin that came with the camera (should be on the CD as the only MAC software available.) This will allow you to open the files in QT and convert them to any other format needed. This plugin unfortunately does not allow QTpro to open the older .mod files of previous JVC cameras. For that you can still use MPEG-SC.
In my experiences over the last few weeks, having mistakenly dumped all of my footage onto my hdd as I used to do with my older JVC cameras, I am now stuck with 3 hours of footage on my HDD as .tod files. I have been struggling to find the right blend of codec type, compression amount, fps, and quality to convert these files in an acceptable resolution (1920x1080 full - another mistake since iMovie08 will not import this quality but will import the 1440 CBR mode.) Converting these files is a nightmare and has become a stain on my otherwise wonderfu lexperience with this new camera (It is an awesome camera despite what negative stuff the "Canon fanboys" are saying!) It takes an unbelievably long time to convert. And you will find that when viewing these files in QT either as .tod or even after converting to .mov, they will be jerky and stutter. I believe this is more to the fact that the files are just really huge. Playback inside of iMovie06HD was perfect for me though.
Hope this helps out and I hope others may offer solutions as to what codecs they are using and what settings they are using to keep the quality as high as possible when converting these files.

  • FCP X viewer window plays back video with color errors

I am new to Final Cut X and Final Cut PRo in general. I am doing a project at work where I needed to learn FCPX.
I figured out a lot pretty fast. But one issue i am having is that all of the clips being played back in the viewer window are being played back with this weird color error. Its happens to movie clips, still photos and titles. See below, This is a screenshot of what it looks like. When I first installed FCP it wasn't doing this but now it started doing it all the time. Its annoying because I can't see the transitions properly, and sometimes video gets out of sync with audio.
I am running Lion 10.7.1 with a Mac Pro 2 x 2.8ghx Quad Core Xeon. 16GB RAM. Nothing special on the HD's but they are at 7200rpm.
I tried adjusting prefs for playback quality, I tried transcoding media. However, its doing this to a still frame jpeg as well, which should be giving the machine ay trouble. I feel like my machine should be able to keep up with FCPX.
EDIT: I also restarted my machine a bunch of times and killed all processes that weren't necessary for the machine to run and for FCP to be working. I also have an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card, which meets the requirements for FCP X.

I am also seeing the same issue. I have an Eizo Display and if I color correct with the i1 it behaves as above. It has been driving me crazy. If I switch back to standard profile it seems to work but my dislplay is not color calibrated. Is there a fix?

  • DVD won't play back in bluray player

I just created a DVD in DVD SP, about 5 mins long with audio. It plays back beautifully on the computer, but my sony bluray player doesn't recognize it at all. I haven't tried on a standard DVD player, but I don't see how that would help. A previously made DVD plays fine on the player. Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Shelley

    Dear Shawn,
Still no good. In a render last night, weirdly, even in my Mac the disk was unreadable and the warning said it was blank, but I rendered again and it works fine on the Mac. But on my SONY player, nothing.
I changed DVD SP to standard in the Preferences and re-created the project from scratch. I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes setting with no changes. Here is the breakdown:
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
Estimated size: 2.79 GB/hour of source
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
              Usage:SD DVD
    Video Encoder
              Format: M2V
              Width and Height: Automatic
              Pixel aspect ratio: Default
              Crop: None
              Padding: None
              Frame rate: (100% of source)
              Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
              Start timecode from source
              Aspect ratio: Automatic
                        Selected 16:9
              Field dominance: Automatic
              Average bit rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
              2 Pass VBR enabled
                        Maximum bit rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
              High quality
              Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
              DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
I am at my wits' end. I have two weeks to get this done for a memorial for my late father so you see my desperation.
Do you have any possibilities left? I'd go ahead and sign up for the Pro classes at the Apple Store, but in NYC I'm afraid I wouldn't even get to see anyone in time for FCP and its suite.
    Thank you for any advice.

  • I can watch my custom DVD in iDVD 7 preview but burnt dvd plays back black with only the audio

I can watch my custom created DVD in iDVD 7 preview but once the disc is burnt and I play it back in DVD Player, the screen is black with only the audio playing back. I have tried using three different blank DVD manufactures.

    Hi
Most probably depends on what movie codec You feed iDVD. May be You find any clue here.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
