Play count and display

Since the latest upgrade of Itunes the play count of many of my tracks has automatically reset to 0 for some unknown reason.  Also I display Track Name/Artist/Album on my Itunes and on a number of occasions they display incorrect information and when I click on Get Info for that track and click back out of it it shows the correct information (It's usually transfers over what's in the Sort Album/Title Name etc into the Album/Title Name field on the main display).  So weird!  Anyone else had this?  Hope I've explained myself clearly!

I have the same issue with my Ipod Shuffle & Itunes.
Is there a resolution to this problem?
Thanks.

  • My iTunes doesn't keep track of my listening history anymore. It doesn't update play counts and default "Recently Played" playlist.

My iTunes doesn't keep track of my listening history anymore. It doesn't update play counts and default "Recently Played" playlist. But it still tracking plays from my iPhone and syncing them.
I've tried to repair it with setup file. Nothing's changed.
Can you help me with that?
NOTE: Now I tried disabling the crossfade feature and it worked, started to count again. But I like crossfade, I don't want to keep it off.

I think I got this figured out. The playcount does update, but not how the previous iPod models update their playcount. Instead of immediately updating the playcount right after you finish the song like the older iPod models, iPod Touch keeps the updates in memory. The next time you connect to iTunes it'll sync those playcounts in memory to the actual songs itself, effectively updating the playcount of the songs only after connecting to iTunes. I have set my syncing manually. That's why after connecting to iTunes, my playcounts are updated. BUT it doesn't solve the mystery of my Smart Playlist. Even though in iTunes, the correct songs are listed, in the iPod Touch, it shows the old playlist.
Don't you just hate that? It was working fine before on non-iPod touch models. Now we have to live with this new bug. I just hope when they release software 2.0 it fixes these bugs and that they *give it for free!* People shouldn't be charged on something they should have gotten as a support!

  • Can I get my music collection (play counts and playlists inc.) from my iPad to my PC?

I had a problem with iTunes where I couldn't add songs to the library because I didn't have sufficient permissions to edit my iTunes library (even though I did). After a few days of tweaking administrator permissions and the like, I got really annoyed and tried re-installing iTunes to see if it would make it go away. Whilst the iTunes64Setup.exe file was downloading, I was fiddling with the .itl and .xml files in my iTunes folder and when I re-installed iTunes I had lost all my play counts and playlists. When iTunes opened, I assumed it must have overwritten the two files because when I looked at them in Windows Explorer they were both a lot smaller in size.
Obviously, I didn't sync my iPad or iPhone after this had happened, so I still have the playlists and play counts stored on them. Is there any way I can:
    a) Recover a previous version of the .xml and .itl files on my laptop and use them to restore my plays?
    or
    b) Use iTunes Match to restore them onto my laptop?
I'm not sure about b). When you subscribe to Match, does it analyze your current library and then save it to the Cloud so you can redownload it?
I'm going to buy the new iPhone when it is released in the next couple of months so I'm willing to jailbreak my iPhone 4 if need be.
    Thanks for any help.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • How to transfer library with play count and top 25 playlist to another itunes library?

    Hi,
I would like to transfer all my music, with the play count and top 25 most played and other playlists to another iTunes library on a Mac. How would I go about doing this?

What exactly are you trying to do?  You already have another library on the computer and wish to add items from another library?  This is not easily done and meeting all the requirements you have posted.  While it is possible to transfer play count I think it is one of the things that requires Applescripting knowledge.
If you are just wanting to move a library from one place to another that is possible, though still tricky because you start encountering user permissions.

  • Will play count and playhead position sync back to iTunes?

I have a bunch of smart playlists that contain all the unplayed episodes of my favorite podcasts. If I drag these onto the Shuffle, will the play count and playhead position from my Shuffle sync back to iTunes?
It seems like the answer is no -- this is really a one-way copy to the Shuffle, and not a "sync".

The iPod shuffle is supposed to maintain a "played" flag for played tracks. I don't know if podcasts will work the same way as normal tracks, but I can't think of a good reason why they wouldn't. Having said that, after the iTunes 8.1 update, my shuffle's marking the wrong tracks as "played" and leaving the actually played tracks unmarked, so until the iTunes team comes up with a fix for all the bugs they introduced in that update, anything goes.

  • Play counts and ratings aren't saving

So far I've been using iTunes for a year and I haven't had any problems until now. So here goes:
As far as I know this has started since I've updated to iTunes 8.2. My play counts and ratings aren't saving when I exit iTunes and start it up again. When I plug in my iPod Classic it syncs up to the old setup and doesn't update playcounts either. At first this happened when I added a new CD and started rating the songs and playing it. Then last night I bought 3 tracks off iTunes Store and all of a sudden it started saving my playcounts and ratings for that past CD. Now today when I started rating and adding playcounts to those new tracks I bought it won't save anything again. It's like it saves the file when I add something new but always reverts to that spot whenever I open iTunes again. I hope this makes sense, haha.

Ok, I found out that when I added another new CD it seems to stop saving all information once I try to rate the new files, or something like that. For example, I started changing the 'Sort Artist' category for the songs and afterwards started to rate them. This was before I clicked 'Get Album Artwork' as well so then when I closed out and opened iTunes again it had the 'Sort Artist' info right but in the wrong spot and the artwork wasn't there. One song was missing too. Is this a corrupted Library file then? It won't save any changes for any of the other songs either. It always reverts back to the old info. I'm really not sure what to do.

  • Play count and last played features do not update

The play count and last played features do not update when syncing my 7th gen nano but still operate wit my 5th gen nano. I cannot find any way of changing  the preferences to do this with the iPod connected to the computer. Any ideas?Play count

I am having the EXACT same problem with my Ipod! I still have yet to figure out how to fix it, but my brother (who knows everything about ipods), has yet to figure out what is making this happen.

  • Lost my ratings, play count and last played

HI, I recently moved my library off my macbook and onto an external drive to save space. Somehow I lost all my ratings, play count and last played info. My Ipod still shows the ratings, however. Is there any way I can get itunes to import the information off my ipod? Thanks for any advice.

Can you put things back the way they were before you moved them to the external? If you can, then you can easily move it to the external by copying the entire iTunes folder to the external and opening from the new location using these instructions...

  • ITunes Play Count and Last Played not updating?

    Hi All,
I have an IPOD shuffle 1GB 2nd gen, I'm using the latest ITunes 7.7.1.11, I have Windows XP SP3 intalled. On Aug 14th for some reason that was the last time ITunes Play Count and Last Played columns updated in ITunes. I listen to and recharge my shuffle everyday. When I hook my IPOD to the base it is recognized and ITunes opens and says it's syncing, then after about 30 seconds it says sync is complete, ok to disconnect, the flashing orange light goes green & everything seems correct except those 2 columns don't get updated, does anyone know how to make ITunes start updating that information again?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Steve

    Hi Paul,
Just downloaded and installed iTunes 8.0. I played a few songs on my shuffle and synced it again, the problem remains the same, the last played & play count do not change. I wonder what happened on Aug 14th because thats the last time it worked.
    Thank you again,
    Steve

  • Help, Library corrupted, need to save ratings, play counts, and last played

Help, my iTunes lost its connection to my media server yesterday and it seems to have totally corrupted the library. I have all my music files intact, but if I recreate the library by starting afresh, I will lose 6 years worth of ratings, play counts, and last played dates. I do not want to lose this information. I have the information in an library export.
How can I add back the music and restore the metadata??

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.
Short tracks (less than 10sec) do not update their metadata to increase the play count. However if I play a short track on my iPod or iPhone and then sync with iTunes the play count and last played info is updated.
This really messes up my smart playlists that use playcount limiters.
I hope there is a fix for this soon.

  • Play counts and "Last Played" not updating on short songs?

It looks like a lot of people have had trouble with play counts not updating with crossfade turned on. I've never used crossfade, so this doesn't bother me. However, I do have a plethora of very short tracks in my library (owing to there being many video game soundtracks with short fanfares as tracks), and I've noticed that when playing any song that's 10 seconds or less, it will show up in the "History" tab of "Up Next", but "Plays" and "Last Played" remain the same. Any other song in my library, whether it's 11 seconds long like "Got a Star Piece (part 1)" from "Super Mario RPG" by Yoko Shimomura or 11 minutes long like "I Am" from "As the World Bleeds" by Theocracy, will update its play count properly when played. Why is 10 seconds enough time to play a song and add it to my history, but not enough time to update when I last played it and make it appear in the smart playlist of recently played songs? Is iTunes 11 so obsessed with 11 that if a song isn't 11 seconds long, it doesn't consider it to be worth tracking?

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.

  • Play counts and last played not registered

When syncing my iPod after the past few days, I was worried when last.fm (music listening tracker for those who don't know it) told me I had no plays to sync with their server. Usually, this means that there was a handshake error with iTunes but I always double check. So I did.
When I looked, all the music from the past few days had no sign that I listened to it at all. No change in play counts, and last played match when I last listened to them on my computer (for many it's never). This is a syncing iPod that works by playlists, which prior to now had no problem syncing play counts at all but only gained this issue recently, with no changes to my settings at all since the last time this was done successfully.
    Troubleshooting?

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.

  • Where is play count and watched/unwatched data stored?

Where is play count and watched/unwatched data stored?
Is it on file or somewhere else?

I don't know where play count is stored, but, when using list view for songs
Go to menue toolbar item 'View' - on the drop down list that appears choose 'View Options...'
In the window that opens up check the box next to Play Count
now iTunes will keep track of how many times you play each song.
But, if you follow the same menue path while movies are in list view mode, the play count option does not appear to exist for movies, although date last played is an option.
If you don't check the box in view options, I don't think iTunes will keep track of song play count. The only data from past use of any individual item iTunes can show is probably limited to that items' metadata that you can see using the 'get info' option for any selected item.

  • Play Count and iPod

is there a way to disable the iPod from adding to the play count for songs when you plug it in?

Ok an observation and then a possible solution.
The observation: I find it very interesting how when people begin to use something they like that offers features never before offered (and this goes for anything, not just computers and software) that people become obsessed and/or dependent on that feature. With itunes and ipods, the whole issue of Play Counts has to be the number one in this regard. People are obsessed. Oh can't have my playlist be out of whack of what I actually listened to. Or I got a new computer/iPod/hard drive and I don't want to lose my playcounts. Funny how a few years back, most people before getting into iTunes or an iPod probably never considered how many times they listened to one album or song vs. another, let alone getting obsessed with maintaining a count.
Yes iTunes came around, introduced play counts, and now everyone is all up in arms if their playcounts are not accurate, updated, lost, etc.
OK so the possible solution. Since you use a Mac, you can use several different Apple scripts to adjust playcounts. In particular there is one that lets you add or subtract from the playcount (vs. setting a playcount to a specific number). So you can select a song or a bunch of songs at once, invoke the script, type the number you want to add or subtract then hit the or button and your playcounts are incremented or decremented that amount.
So in your situation, you simply play your iPod and fall asleep. Then next time you sync your iPod, all you have to do is in iTunes, go to the most recently played list (which is a SmartPlaylist you can adjust the total number shown so instead of just 25 or whatever, make it 100 or whatever works), select all the songs from the one after the last one you recall listening to before falling asleep through to the when the iPod turned off or you woke up or whatever it is. With all of them selected, invoke the script, type in 1, hit the minus button and all those tracks will have their playcount adjusted down one, preserving the playcount the way you like.

  • Importing music library removes "play count" and "last played" information

I recently updated my music drive and had to edit the iTunes Music Library XML file to reflect this. However, I've tried several times to import the edited file and each time iTunes throws out the "play count" and "last played" fields for each track. Not only that, it rewrites the entire XML file without them.
How can I retain this data?

Updating all the songs is impossible,
But you want to update the same songs over and over?
i have more than 30gb on my pc, and also i dont like carrying some unnessesary song with me all the time.
So don't put all the songs on your iPod.
Just put the ones you want. You can select to auto update only selected playlists.
Taggs on my computer and ipod are different because it's more useful this way..
That way if you have to reload the songs, you have to "update" everything again.
I don't understand how it's "more useful". It's certainly not more convenient.
Since you are already in iTunes, why not make it simple and update everything only one time?
I mean, you can do it any way you want but is is so much easier to do it only one time.
The iPod/iTunes were designed for simple and ease of use. You shouldn't have constantly put a bunch of work into just maintaining everything.
