Play Count not updating

This is obviously not a major problem, but the Play Count counter on iTunes no longer updates how many times songs play on my iPod. Any ideas on how to fix this so it will do so once again?

I am using auto transfer. It used to automatically update and change the Play Count each time I conected the iPod to add new songs. I believe it was showing how many times the song played before I connected the iPod again to add new songs. It does not do that anymore. Most of the songs show no number as ever being played, even though I know the songs have been multiple times.
The date and time on the iPod are correct.
I do play the songs all the way through. Normally, the iPod is playing on Shuffle mode and I just let it keep going through each song.
Thanks for any help you can give.

  • Play count not updating - Shuffle 1st gen

My 1st generation iPod shuffle is not updating the play count or last played fields properly.
I have tested it with a few tracks manually dragged into the iPod, and it seems to work if I do this. However the play counts do not update if I use Autofill from my smart playlist. And I tried limiting my smart playlist to 950 MB (It's a 1GB shuffle) and dragging the playlist manually. Again the play count does not update.
This is a pain as I use the smart playlist to pick songs for my iPod and I use play counts in my smart playlist criteria, so it's messed up the way I use my iPod and iTunes.
(It used to work fine when I had earlier versions of Windows, iTunes and iPod software. I had problems getting iTunes to recognise or sync with the iPod, but updating windows to Service Pack 3 fixed this. But have had this play count problem since. I have up to date versions of iTunes and iPod software.)
Anyone had a similar problem and managed to fix it?

I've had this problem too, since the 8.1 release? It had been failing in shuffle mode but not in "not shuffle"/"in order". As of today it failed to update play date/count after playing in the "not shuffle" mode. The songs that were played are untouched, but a like number of other random songs that had not been played show today's date.
The apparent lack of support for older hardware is really disappointing. It certainly does not motivate me to go out and buy more Apple hardware which they will soon stop supporting.

  • ITunes 12 play counts not updating

So... my home Mac hosts my main iTunes library and was on the last version iTunes 11.  I connect to it from my Windows laptop in my office, with the Home Sharing setting to update play counts and dates turned on (I need this for certain playlists to work).  My Windows machine was also on the latest 11.xx version.  After upgrading the Windows machine to iTunes 12.01, this feature stopped working.  I can play music from my main iTunes library on my laptop just fine, but they don't get updated with the last play date and count on the main library - like it did earlier this morning.
I then upgraded iTunes on my Mac that hosts the iTunes library and it's now on 12.01 as well - but the problem is still there.
Anyone else have this issue?  This isn't the first time I've had an iTunes upgrade break this feature.
Is it ever safe to apply an upgrade to iTunes without worrying about a key feature not working any more?

This again happened to me for a couple of week and all of a sudden my phone decided to go through the 'Trust This Computer' question... and once I clicked 'Yes' it started to remember my last played song.
So... that may be the issue - you, somehow, need to go through that 'Trust This Computer' cycle.  Not sure how to force it to do so but someone / somewhere in this discussion board must have the answer

  • Play counts not updating on iMac

Updated to iTunes 11.  My play counts are fine from my iPhone and an old iPod (still use iPod Photo in my car) as well as my iPod Nano.  But if I listen to my music on my iMac it doesn't update play counts.
I am using iTunes Match as well, if that makes a difference.  Is this just an iTunes 11 glitch?

NOTE--This issue has been resolved with update 11.0.1.

  • Play counts not updating? - iTunes 11

Just updated to iTunes 11 and track information such as play count, skip count, laste played date, etc. are NOT updating as I listen to songs. I have quite a few smart playlists based around this data and now they aren't updating.
Just me or is this a bug?
    Thanks!

Well, how odd. I woke up my computer to find my iTunes behaving in the same manner...
Well as far as I can tell Up Next is not "playing" well with Crossfade (pun intended)
To put it simply, with iTunes 11, you can have either one or the other. Not both. If you have Crossfade on, your play counts/dates will not be updated. If you don't, they will but you won't have any crossfading.  I theorize that this new unnecessary feature has broke the functionality between Crossfading and the Last Played/Play Count fields.
Of course, what more can you expect from a powerful company like Apple? After all, Micro$oft Windows Media Player's crossfade has been broken for a while. Stupid software doesn't start timing the next song until AFTER the first one is finished, Someone sure as heck dropped the ball on that one. I guess it's too much to ask for everything to work as it should in either Media Player.

  • Why is iTunes play count not updating for SOME songs played on iPod Touch?

I have noticed that when I play some songs on my iPod the play count won't update. This only happens with some I bought recently. I was actually testing witha song I purchased 3 weeks ago and the play count will only update if I play it on the computer. However, when I played the song on my iPod Touch 4g running iOS 5, nothing happened. How can I fix this as I use the recently played playlist quite often. also, Im pretty sure most of the songs were downloaded from iTunes app in my iPod.

I've had this problem before with my 1G and still have it with my 2G. I can replicate it EVERY TIME.
If I listen to nothing but music on my iPod touch, and then go back home and sync, I have no problems with the playcount and smart playlists.
However, if I listen to a bunch of music, then play a few games, or browse Safari for a while, any record of my recently listened to music is wiped out. The Music application even loses my place in what song I was listening to and even which artist/album I was last listening to -- kicking me back to main music screen when I click the Music icon on the Home screen.
My hypothesis -- Apple is not using a dedicated/untouchable portion of memory to store playcounts. It is shared with all other memory access. So if an application or Safari uses a lot of memory during your session AFTER you've played your music, your playcounts gets wiped out in the process.
But that's just my take on the situation.

  • HT1386 Play count wont update between iTunes and iPod Nano 7th Gen

I have a iPod nano 7th generation and have the latest version of iTunes on my MacBook Pro... when I play music on my iPod and connect it to my computer, the play count doesn't update on my iTunes... The same can be said for when I play music on my iTunes...the play count wont update on my iPod...  any ideas how to fix this? AK

If you want to make song files from your iTunes library available on your car audio system, and it connects using a USB port, a new iPod nano is a very expensive way to do it.  If that's the only reason for getting the iPod nano, you should return it and get a cheap 8 or 16GB USB flash drive instead, which costs less than $20.  Here's one that barely sticks out of the USB port.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SanDisk/SDCZ33016G/
You can then leave it connected in the car all the time, except for when you want to update the songs.  An iPod is more fragile (especially screen and battery), and you'll have to always remember to remove it, in case the car overheats or freezes.  It would also be a target for thieves.
For the audio file format, I can't believe any car audio system would ONLY play Window Media files, and not the most common type of audio files, MP3.  Songs purchased from the iTunes Store, and those ripped from music CD (using the default settings), are in AAC format.  It's possible the car system does not play AAC.  So, I would try songs from your iTunes library that are in MP3 format.
You can use iTunes to convert songs from AAC (or any iTunes supported format) to MP3.  So, if MP3 works, and you need details on how to convert audio format using iTunes, please post back.  You cannot convert to WMA format (which is Windows Media audio) using iTunes.

  • Shuffle stopped updating play count not once but twice!

My Shuffle used to update playcount. It did so even though it was at version 1.0 of the software. It worked for months - from December or January when I bought it. It stopped a few weeks ago.
Resetting it multiple times erasing and reloding songs, etc. made no difference.
I took it to the Applestore last week and they updated it to version 1.1 and it was updating the play count. It's stopped again.
iTunes is 4.7, same as it's always been since I bought the shuffle.
This is, to say the least, extremely annoying. Now I'm wondering if there's something defective in the Shuffle that's making it stop working. Any ideas?

I took it back to Apple store and got a funny answer.
The Apple guy said "You're expecting too much from the Shuffle".
Why shouldn't I expect the Shuffle to update the playcounts when it used to update the playcounts?
Then he said he'd searched the tech's version of the Knowledge Base and asked the other geniuses and that they concluded the "play count" doesn't work anymore on Shuffles.
I've searched the KB too and there's no info about the Shuffle updating the playcount.

  • ITouch play count not reflected on computer

I know this was raised before and was claimed to be fixed but I don't think so - there are songs I play on my iTouch which are not always reflected in the play count/last played on my computer. Version is 1.1.4 (4A102) and iTunes is 7.6.2.9.
    Thoughts? Thanks.
    -Bob.

I am surprised this issue has not been appropriately been solved or cleared by Apple.
I have an iPod Touch with firmware 1.1.4 and iTunes 7.6.2.9. My old "regular and clunky" iPod (a 60 Gb unit) did sync well all the time.
Now, sometimes, my Touch does not update the Play Count.
    As a reference:
    - I have it on automatic synching
    - I am referring also about "fully played songs" and not skipped ones
    - iTunes DOES recognize the Touch: iTunes shows the Touch on its screen and puts on all the synching signs, and the Touch also shows on its display that it is synching. However, sometimes, nothing happens.
My last missing play count episode seems to have happened after I added a new list to the group of selected lists for synching (curiously, the list was just a sub-set of other, previously selected, lists, so its addition did not require uploading any new song to the Touch).
One of the worst issues with this is that it seems to be unpredictable. My Touch got back to synching earlier today after a couple of days of trouble.
    Anybody has a clue?
I will do some tests and will report if I find anything I find, but will surely appreciate if anyone can provide some light on this uncomfortable issue.
    Tks

  • Do iTunes play counts cause update of iPod?

For example, when I play a song in iTunes, the next time I sync my iPod, does the play count change cause an update for the iPod?
I don't recall this happening before, back in the old days.
    Thanks,
    Joel

I am not sure if this is the way it's always been, but I remember it being this way since I started using the auto-update in iTunes 4.9. Playcount changes do cause and update of the iPod.

  • Play Count Wont Update For Songs Under 11 Seconds Long

    Hello,
I have downloaded iTunes 11 and have found that it does not seem to record a play count for songs (audio-book) that are under 11 seconds in length. Is there a way to amend this so that it does record a play count for these? I am playing songs directly from iTunes.
    Chris

Hi Steven -- thanks, your fix works for me too.  I hadn't even known about iTunes'  File > Create New Version.
An alternate symptom: If I played the song and manually clicked near the end, it *would* update correctly.  But if I played it through completely w/o skipping, it wouldn't update the play-count.
    For any others:
I wanted to preserve the date-imported-into-library and play-count of the new version, so:
    - File > Create New Version
    - Looking at the new entry I saw, via File > Get Info > Summary > Where, that the new entry pointed to a (new) file which a " 1" added to the filename.
    - I quit iTunes
    - manually deleted the original/bad copy in the Finder,
    - renamed the newer/good copy (deleting the appened '2').
    - I re-started iTunes, and found the song.
[At this point: There were still two copies of the song in my play-list (as expected), but it was NOT the case that one was shown as 'file not locatable'; both were pointing to the single, correct .mp3, and both entries the original date-imported and play-count ( ! ) -- a bit of smart library clean-up being done by iTunes under the hood.]
    - While viewing the full Songs list in iTunes (not a playlist) I deleted the version I didn't want (being sure to select 'keep file' rather than 'move to trash'), and it worked fine.
    > (This doesn't explain why the play count updated fine for a year, though ...)
    >
Totally guessing, but: perhaps the mp3 file is not quite in the standard/proper format.  An old version of iTunes handled it correctly anyway, but a 2013-Nov-ish update to iTunes suddenly relies on the file being in the correct format?
I'm assuming the mp3 file has a header stating its song-time, which is different from the data that's *actually* provided.  Redundant info can increase efficiency, but it opens the door to inconsistent data, which leads to bugs.  Fortunately, this is a relatively minor one....

  • Ratings and play counts not synced to iTunes

I just got a 2G iPod nano 2GB. Whenever I add ratings or increase the play count for songs on the iPod and then sync to iTunes, the ratings and play counts are obliterated by whatever iTunes has for its data. Example: I make a 5 star smart playlist in iTunes with Live update, then while listening to iPod I rate some songs with 5 stars. They show up in the playlist on iPod since they have 5 stars, but once I sync with iTunes again, the stars are wiped out and the smart playlist is back to exactly what is was in iTunes.
It seems to me that syncing should take whichever has newer information (iPod or iTunes) and propagate it to the other. I read some topics from others that had this same problem and people have repeatedly stated that Automatic syncing must be enabled and not manually manage music. I don't have room to put all my music on the iPod, but I have enabled automatic syncing with selected playlists. My question is this: does this count as automatic updating for the purposes of ratings and play counts being copied to iTunes when I sync with iPod? Or does automatic sync need to be for the entire library in order for ratings and play counts to be propagated? Thanks!
    iPod nano 2G   Windows XP

My question is this: does this count as automatic updating for the purposes of ratings and play counts being copied to iTunes when I sync with iPod?
it should do. green eyes is a second gen nano, i'm syncing selected playlists only, and my play counts and ratings are updating in the smart playlists.
are you playing the songs through completely? i'm noticing that i only get a playcount update if i've completely played the song. (the ratings changes go through regardless of whether or not i've completely played a song on green eyes, though.)

  • Recently Played Artists not updating!

Alright, so there is already a thread about this, but Spotify hasn't addressed it yet, so I figure I'd start a second one. It's been about 3-4 weeks since my "Recently Played Artists" or my friends "Recently Played Artists" have updated. This is very frustating to me and others I've heard from. I'd like to see my own because there are days where I'll go through 2-3 artists' entire collection of work, then the next day do some other artists, but sometimes I like to look back and see what I had listened to (which would be in Recently Played Artists) without having to add a bunch of songs to my or a playlist. Not that that matters - for the last several weeks whenever I've followed a new playlist, it won't show up on my account page. Luckily it still shows up in the left hand bar, but I use my phone a lot and it's not as easy as it is on the computer. I also like to see what my friends are/have been listening to as well, but since I haven't seen a change in any of theirs for 3-4 weeks, unless I'm on and looking at what they are currently playing, I don't know. This brings up another issue I've been having where sometimes it will say the last person listening to music was, say, 4 hours ago... but if I close Spotify and restart it (which takes 10 seconds), then 4 people are listening to music live and I'll see in my feed that others had been listening in the time between 4 hours. My computer is always connected to wifi, and I had never had this problem before. The amalgamation of these little (but irritating) problems has really defeated the feeling of connectedness I've had since getting Spotify several months ago. Additionally, seeing what you and your friends' Recently Played/Top Played artists is what, to me, makes Spotify more enjoyable than just listening to music in my iTunes library.  If you are having this problem, please click the "ME TOO" button, as this will highlight this post for Spotify to see.

Hey Rustie! So yesterday morning I sent them a breakdown of things I found/noticed. I was on a Free test account and noticed some problems with specific ads that would just completely pause the music once they were done. But I was mainly trying out the Recently Played Artists obviously, and keeping an eye on the activity feed too since I was having trouble with that. Everytime there is an an-app update, say someone adds a song to a playlist you follow, the activity feed stops refreshing until you close and restart the app. I noticed this on my account and didn't know what was causing it, but on the test account is where I pinned down in-app updates as being the source of the issue. For Recently Played Artists - no luck. I played Of Monsters and Men for two days straight (let it play while I slept too) so that there would be no question it would make it to the Recently Played. The list didn't update in the 3 days I had the account however.  When I sent them the email yesterday, I was sort of disappointed. I told them exactly who I had listened to and what I had noticed with the app, and up until this email they'd been very eager to hear from me, but when I told them nothing had happened I just got a generic email about how cases like mine are being collected and that Spotify is looking at it... Well I know they're looking at it as I've been emailing them about it for the last week haha, I guess I shouldn't be expecting a full report on what they've found or what they're doing about it other than "looking" but I would've like to know if it's a bug or a programming error or something rather than just being told again that the issue is being addressed.  I'm not mad at that though, I understand technical difficulties can be tough, and there are a lot of people complaining so I'm sure they really ARE working on it, but what annoyed me is that this is clearly a problem, and so they put out an update that changes the shade of green for the app icon...? Maybe I'm seeing things but it looks like the update changed the color of my mobile app icon, which is completely pointless to me and any amount of time that went towards changing the color very slightly should've have gone towards dealing with actual issues in my opinion. But I may just being seeing things. Anyway, they certainly are trying to figure this issue out so that's good to hear.
