Play Count Wont Update For Songs Under 11 Seconds Long

Hello,
I have downloaded iTunes 11 and have found that it does not seem to record a play count for songs (audio-book) that are under 11 seconds in length. Is there a way to amend this so that it does record a play count for these? I am playing songs directly from iTunes.
Chris

Hi Steven -- thanks, your fix works for me too.  I hadn't even known about iTunes'  File > Create New Version.
An alternate symptom: If I played the song and manually clicked near the end, it *would* update correctly.  But if I played it through completely w/o skipping, it wouldn't update the play-count.
For any others:
I wanted to preserve the date-imported-into-library and play-count of the new version, so:
- File > Create New Version
- Looking at the new entry I saw, via File > Get Info > Summary > Where, that the new entry pointed to a (new) file which a " 1" added to the filename.
- I quit iTunes
- manually deleted the original/bad copy in the Finder,
- renamed the newer/good copy (deleting the appened '2').
- I re-started iTunes, and found the song.
[At this point: There were still two copies of the song in my play-list (as expected), but it was NOT the case that one was shown as 'file not locatable'; both were pointing to the single, correct .mp3, and both entries the original date-imported and play-count ( ! ) -- a bit of smart library clean-up being done by iTunes under the hood.]
- While viewing the full Songs list in iTunes (not a playlist) I deleted the version I didn't want (being sure to select 'keep file' rather than 'move to trash'), and it worked fine.
> (This doesn't explain why the play count updated fine for a year, though ...)

Totally guessing, but: perhaps the mp3 file is not quite in the standard/proper format.  An old version of iTunes handled it correctly anyway, but a 2013-Nov-ish update to iTunes suddenly relies on the file being in the correct format?
I'm assuming the mp3 file has a header stating its song-time, which is different from the data that's *actually* provided.  Redundant info can increase efficiency, but it opens the door to inconsistent data, which leads to bugs.  Fortunately, this is a relatively minor one....

  • HT1386 Play count wont update between iTunes and iPod Nano 7th Gen

I have a iPod nano 7th generation and have the latest version of iTunes on my MacBook Pro... when I play music on my iPod and connect it to my computer, the play count doesn't update on my iTunes... The same can be said for when I play music on my iTunes...the play count wont update on my iPod...  any ideas how to fix this? AK

If you want to make song files from your iTunes library available on your car audio system, and it connects using a USB port, a new iPod nano is a very expensive way to do it.  If that's the only reason for getting the iPod nano, you should return it and get a cheap 8 or 16GB USB flash drive instead, which costs less than $20.  Here's one that barely sticks out of the USB port.

You can then leave it connected in the car all the time, except for when you want to update the songs.  An iPod is more fragile (especially screen and battery), and you'll have to always remember to remove it, in case the car overheats or freezes.  It would also be a target for thieves.
For the audio file format, I can't believe any car audio system would ONLY play Window Media files, and not the most common type of audio files, MP3.  Songs purchased from the iTunes Store, and those ripped from music CD (using the default settings), are in AAC format.  It's possible the car system does not play AAC.  So, I would try songs from your iTunes library that are in MP3 format.
You can use iTunes to convert songs from AAC (or any iTunes supported format) to MP3.  So, if MP3 works, and you need details on how to convert audio format using iTunes, please post back.  You cannot convert to WMA format (which is Windows Media audio) using iTunes.

  • Why is iTunes play count not updating for SOME songs played on iPod Touch?

I have noticed that when I play some songs on my iPod the play count won't update. This only happens with some I bought recently. I was actually testing witha song I purchased 3 weeks ago and the play count will only update if I play it on the computer. However, when I played the song on my iPod Touch 4g running iOS 5, nothing happened. How can I fix this as I use the recently played playlist quite often. also, Im pretty sure most of the songs were downloaded from iTunes app in my iPod.

I've had this problem before with my 1G and still have it with my 2G. I can replicate it EVERY TIME.
If I listen to nothing but music on my iPod touch, and then go back home and sync, I have no problems with the playcount and smart playlists.
However, if I listen to a bunch of music, then play a few games, or browse Safari for a while, any record of my recently listened to music is wiped out. The Music application even loses my place in what song I was listening to and even which artist/album I was last listening to -- kicking me back to main music screen when I click the Music icon on the Home screen.
My hypothesis -- Apple is not using a dedicated/untouchable portion of memory to store playcounts. It is shared with all other memory access. So if an application or Safari uses a lot of memory during your session AFTER you've played your music, your playcounts gets wiped out in the process.
But that's just my take on the situation.

  • IPod iTunes is up to date but my iPod wont update all songs???

The fact that Apple wants me to pay $50 for one incident...enough said! Sorry, I'm better now. So I have a legacy issue. iTunes version and iPod software versions are up to date but when I look at "My iPod" through iTunes it does not show all songs synced to my iPod?? Essentially my iPod is locked and grayed out and wont update new songs I have bought from iTunes. There is even a little lock at the bottom of the iTunes page "within" my iPod.... I cannot seem to unlock it and it is not because the iPod is physically on hold. Huge bummer - hugely annoying and Apple help desk wants $50 to tell me whats wrong with their product...

I've just started having a very similar issue. My iPod (20 GB dock connector, touch wheel with the four buttons above etc.) crashed for about the third time, wiped out all the songs on it and crashed iTunes each time I connected it to my Mac. In the past I have just loaded the iPod Updater again to re-install the software and start from scratch so I did this again. However, this is the first time I have done that after upgrading to iTunes 6 and I used an old iPod updater that I had previously downloaded (2005-03-23).
Everything seemed normal except none of the music I have purchased from iTunes will copy across to the iPod, error message = "some of the songs...were not copied..because your iPod software is too old. Go to...to get the latest iPod software update." I downloaded 2005-10-12 but it doesn't seem to do anything. Can anyone help?
With the updater I have just run the .dmg which opens the volume and then I've run the .mpkg. Do I need to do anything else?!?!?

It appears to be a bug with the current build. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next release.

When am watching live news on air play it only shows for one minute 30 seconds ,, I need some help?

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Play count not updating - Shuffle 1st gen

My 1st generation iPod shuffle is not updating the play count or last played fields properly.
I have tested it with a few tracks manually dragged into the iPod, and it seems to work if I do this. However the play counts do not update if I use Autofill from my smart playlist. And I tried limiting my smart playlist to 950 MB (It's a 1GB shuffle) and dragging the playlist manually. Again the play count does not update.
This is a pain as I use the smart playlist to pick songs for my iPod and I use play counts in my smart playlist criteria, so it's messed up the way I use my iPod and iTunes.
(It used to work fine when I had earlier versions of Windows, iTunes and iPod software. I had problems getting iTunes to recognise or sync with the iPod, but updating windows to Service Pack 3 fixed this. But have had this play count problem since. I have up to date versions of iTunes and iPod software.)
Anyone had a similar problem and managed to fix it?

I've had this problem too, since the 8.1 release? It had been failing in shuffle mode but not in "not shuffle"/"in order". As of today it failed to update play date/count after playing in the "not shuffle" mode. The songs that were played are untouched, but a like number of other random songs that had not been played show today's date.
The apparent lack of support for older hardware is really disappointing. It certainly does not motivate me to go out and buy more Apple hardware which they will soon stop supporting.

  • Play Count not updating

This is obviously not a major problem, but the Play Count counter on iTunes no longer updates how many times songs play on my iPod. Any ideas on how to fix this so it will do so once again?

I am using auto transfer. It used to automatically update and change the Play Count each time I conected the iPod to add new songs. I believe it was showing how many times the song played before I connected the iPod again to add new songs. It does not do that anymore. Most of the songs show no number as ever being played, even though I know the songs have been multiple times.
The date and time on the iPod are correct.
I do play the songs all the way through. Normally, the iPod is playing on Shuffle mode and I just let it keep going through each song.
Thanks for any help you can give.

  • ITunes 12 play counts not updating

So... my home Mac hosts my main iTunes library and was on the last version iTunes 11.  I connect to it from my Windows laptop in my office, with the Home Sharing setting to update play counts and dates turned on (I need this for certain playlists to work).  My Windows machine was also on the latest 11.xx version.  After upgrading the Windows machine to iTunes 12.01, this feature stopped working.  I can play music from my main iTunes library on my laptop just fine, but they don't get updated with the last play date and count on the main library - like it did earlier this morning.
I then upgraded iTunes on my Mac that hosts the iTunes library and it's now on 12.01 as well - but the problem is still there.
Anyone else have this issue?  This isn't the first time I've had an iTunes upgrade break this feature.
Is it ever safe to apply an upgrade to iTunes without worrying about a key feature not working any more?

This again happened to me for a couple of week and all of a sudden my phone decided to go through the 'Trust This Computer' question... and once I clicked 'Yes' it started to remember my last played song.
So... that may be the issue - you, somehow, need to go through that 'Trust This Computer' cycle.  Not sure how to force it to do so but someone / somewhere in this discussion board must have the answer

  • Play counts not updating? - iTunes 11

Just updated to iTunes 11 and track information such as play count, skip count, laste played date, etc. are NOT updating as I listen to songs. I have quite a few smart playlists based around this data and now they aren't updating.
Just me or is this a bug?
    Thanks!

Well, how odd. I woke up my computer to find my iTunes behaving in the same manner...
Well as far as I can tell Up Next is not "playing" well with Crossfade (pun intended)
To put it simply, with iTunes 11, you can have either one or the other. Not both. If you have Crossfade on, your play counts/dates will not be updated. If you don't, they will but you won't have any crossfading.  I theorize that this new unnecessary feature has broke the functionality between Crossfading and the Last Played/Play Count fields.
Of course, what more can you expect from a powerful company like Apple? After all, Micro$oft Windows Media Player's crossfade has been broken for a while. Stupid software doesn't start timing the next song until AFTER the first one is finished, Someone sure as heck dropped the ball on that one. I guess it's too much to ask for everything to work as it should in either Media Player.

  • Do iTunes play counts cause update of iPod?

For example, when I play a song in iTunes, the next time I sync my iPod, does the play count change cause an update for the iPod?
I don't recall this happening before, back in the old days.
    Thanks,
    Joel

I am not sure if this is the way it's always been, but I remember it being this way since I started using the auto-update in iTunes 4.9. Playcount changes do cause and update of the iPod.

  • Bug in newest version of iTunes: last played data not updating after songs are played

I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes on my Mac. The "last played" data is not updating automatically after a song has finished playing (even after waiting for a while). Sometimes in the older versions it would take 5-10 second for the data to update automatically, but even after several minutes, "last played" still shows as if the song had not just been played.

    RestonMacGuy wrote:
I did something similar, but not the same: I "played" a few tracks from the iPod (fast-forwarding until about 30 seconds from the end) while the Shuffle was connected to my computer and in iTunes, which then caused the "Last Played" field to be updated.
The next time I connected my Shuffle, the Last Played values were updated.
I bet the Last Played was updated after you stopped playing the tracks...IN FACT. if you were watching your shuffle icon, you might have noticed the rotating thingy to the left of the eject symbol, meaning an update was ongoing.
This will happen AS LONG AS the track has "remember playback position" set.
