Play counts doubling when I manually sync

Over the past week, my play counts have been going up by 2's instead of by 1's. Every time I play a song on my IPhone 5S and manually sync with ITunes, ITunes shows the number of plays has increased by 2. Has any one else experienced this?
The onlychange I've made recently is upgrading ITunes: I sync with 2 computers and keep my library and my Media on an accessory hard drive that I shuttle back and forth between both computers. One computer runs 11.3.0, the other runs 11.3.1 - could this discrepancy be related to the problem? My IPhone is running 7.1.2
Thanks

yes it is. you can sign out of itunes account then sign back in. use http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1311 to sign out.

  • Podcast play count reset when syncing multiple devices

I have noticed some odd behavior since upgrading iTunes to version 10. My wife and I each have an iPhone, iPad, and an iPod nano. I have several playlists that I sync to each of my devices. The problem comes when I play some podcasts on one device, and other podcasts on another device. I sync one device, the play count updates. I sync one of the other devices, and the play count updates on some songs, but is deleted on others. I can tell which tracks have been reset because they still have a Last Played Date. It appears that the device with the most advanced time overwrites the play count in the library.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this behavior?
    Doc

After much faffing, I have finally found out what to do. I've been stupid. Or maybe the whole sync thing isn't clear or intuitive, but probably I've been stupid.
I'm posting this because I couldn't find a definitive answer anywhere and because lots of people had similar questions to me.
The following settings work as I would expect them to. That is:
    1. I have all my iTunes content on my iPod touch (not just some tracks, but all 8186 of them)
    2. When I rate a track on the iPod, I expect that rating to copy into iTunes when I sync
    3. I don't expect all 8186 songs to be wiped from my iPod and replaced again every time I sync; i.e. I only want any new ratings/artwork/tracks in iTunes to be duplicated on my iPod
So, here are my settings which work for me, at least:
    1. In *iTunes Preferences*, on the Devices tab, *Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically* is unchecked
    2. When the iPod is connected to my Mac, when clicking the iPod in the sidebar;
    a) on the Summary tab, *Open iTunes when this iPod is attached* is unchecked
(I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I usually already have iTunes open when connecting the iPod)
    b) on the Music tab, *Sync Music:* and *Entire music library* are checked
    3. I then click Sync at the bottom of that tab and, lo and behold, everything syncs properly.
Prior to this, I did have to go through that tedious process of having everything removed from the iPod and replaced, but it seems that that was a one-off chore and now things seem OK.
If you're syncing Apps, Calendar, Contacts, etc. too, then those settings can be checked in the Applications and Info tabs and that seems to function properly as well.
This may seem basic and obvious to some, but there does appear to be a lot of confused folks out there!

  • How to sync data when doing manual sync

I had to switch to manual sync as My ipod is now too small to hold my music library, but since I made the switch, last played time on my ipod is no longer reflacted in my main itune lib. Is it possible to get the main itune lib updated ?

Have you tried syncing to selected playlists?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304708
You could have an iPod playlist and sync to that.
I haven't actually verified that it updates the library myself, but I assume it does as it is a variaety of auto sync.

  • Do play counts update when playing music from iCloud through AppleTV?

I'm trying to figure out a way to get my play counts to update when I play music from iCloud through AppleTV. I use this method of enjoying music an awful lot, but my play counts are important to my overall music organization. Anyone know how to make this work?

only if it's a feature of the tv I think my sony one have a movement detector and turn off if there are nobody moving close by
the old appletv1 would play out the optical even with no tv connected to hdmi but the 2g one after some os updates require an active tv connection

  • How do you stop play counts and song ratings being synced?, How do you stop play counts and song ratings being synced?

There are 5 ios devices being synced to my itunes on my conputer, how do i only make my devices sync song eatings and play countback and forth?
    Cheers.

There are a couple of ways to do this.
    1) Open the music trimmer and trim the track that way.
    2) Drag the music track onto the frame of your video where you want it to start. The music track will be below the video track. You can drag the right edge of this music track to the left to make it stop at any point. In essence, you can treat a music track just like a sound effects track or a voice track.

  • ITunes not syncing play counts from iOS devices

I realize this is a small thing to some people, but my music-listening abnd playlisting habits are fairly OCD and are depenedent on play count tallies....
Long story short, I updated my iTunes software the other day to 10.5.3. Now, when I plug my iPad (1) and iPhone(4s) in to the iMac to sync, the playcounts and last played data does not appear to by syncing. Is anyone else having this problem?
I actually spoke to someone at applecare, and they suggested selecting "homesharing updates playcount" in preferences, which I did, but that does not appear to affect anything when I amsyncing directly from the iOS devices. I have not started using itunes match yet, partially because of concerns about play counts, so I am still syncing the old-fashioned way, with a cord.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • After installing the itunes 12 update the play count

After installing the itunes update my Ipod Classic has difficulty syncing, It will update recently downloaded songs after a lengthy struggle, but no longer updates the Play count & Last played columns with information read from my ipod. It all updates fine when played through itunes, is there a quick fix for this or does the ipod need resetting as the memory is practically full?

Check to see if the iPod is currently set to Manually manage music and videos.  This setting is on the iPod's Summary settings screen (in iTunes), which is what you see when you select the iPod in iTunes (click the device button in iTunes 12).  If that setting is enabled (checked), the iPod does not automatically "sync" when connected; it is being managed manually.  iTunes is not responsible for keeping the iPod's library "in sync" with the computer's iTunes library (those two libraries are independent), so supporting data (such as play count and ratings) do not automatically sync either.
If your iPod is currently using the manual setting (not automatic syncing), and all of your songs are in your current iTunes library on the computer, you can set it to automatic syncing.  Select the iPod in iTunes.  In the iPod's sidebar, under Settings, click Music.  To the right, check the box for Sync Music.  NOTE:  If that box was not checked already, checking it enables automatic syncing.  Any songs on the iPod that are not in your computer's iTunes library will be lost.
Below the Sync Music setting, if your entire iTunes music library fits on the iPod, choose the option to sync Entire music library.  Then click Apply.  Going forward, updates to your iTunes music library will sync automatically to the iPod without any "lengthy struggle."  Supporting data on the iPod such as play count and ratings should also sync back to the computer's iTunes library.

  • Itunes play count messed up.

I like to keep track of my itunes playcount and it is normally fine.
Lately, If I have got into a song and played it alot when I synch my ipod with itunes it shoots up the playcount to a ridiculous amount. For instance, a song just shot up to over 400 plays from around 40. I have played it alot...but no way that much. It has done it a few times now with songs I have played frequently within a few days. At first I thought I must have just under estimated the amount of plays but after this latest one there's no chance I have played it that much. Could it be anything to do with the face that I'm using my ipod speaker?
It's really strange and annoying me.

In lastfm, tools, options, ipod, do you have "always confirm ipod scrobbles" checked?
I thought itunes wouldn't increment play counts if music was manually managed, though.

  • Ipod manual sync issues

Why does my iPod not sync all the songs in a playlist when I manually sync it with my computer? It shows up as 51 songs in the playlist on my mac (all software is updated, included itunes recent version), but only 48 on the ipod playlist.

i know it sounds tedious but try and play every song on the list
if some of them give error messages and then show an exclemation mark next to them that means ur itunes still has them listed but the songs are not where the itunes thinks they are (them being deleted for instance) and thus does not actually have them to sync over. that would cause this issue.
if thats the case u should delete the songs that have those excelmation marks and resync. the playlist should be the same after that.

  • Ipod play count is incorrect - solution?

    Hey everyone,
I've been noticing EXTREMELY high play counts for my songs and it has to do with ipod syncs. Every time I plug in my ipod it adds all my computer library play counts to the ipod play counts and it doesn't just add the new ones that occured since my last sync, but all computer play counts EVER! so it double, triple, quadruple counts the computer play counts b/c of each sync.
Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this so it stops messing up the play count? Or does anyone know how to stop it from syncing computer and ipod plays in general?
    thanks! =D

I have the same issue with my touch and it's really annoying. What I've noticed is that the play count is added to itself and then incremented. For instance I just played a song that had a play count of 7 once and then it became 15. The songs I've listened to twice will have a play count of 3, songs that Iv'e listened to 3 times will become 7 and so on.

  • Play counts and "Last Played" not updating on short songs?

It looks like a lot of people have had trouble with play counts not updating with crossfade turned on. I've never used crossfade, so this doesn't bother me. However, I do have a plethora of very short tracks in my library (owing to there being many video game soundtracks with short fanfares as tracks), and I've noticed that when playing any song that's 10 seconds or less, it will show up in the "History" tab of "Up Next", but "Plays" and "Last Played" remain the same. Any other song in my library, whether it's 11 seconds long like "Got a Star Piece (part 1)" from "Super Mario RPG" by Yoko Shimomura or 11 minutes long like "I Am" from "As the World Bleeds" by Theocracy, will update its play count properly when played. Why is 10 seconds enough time to play a song and add it to my history, but not enough time to update when I last played it and make it appear in the smart playlist of recently played songs? Is iTunes 11 so obsessed with 11 that if a song isn't 11 seconds long, it doesn't consider it to be worth tracking?

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.
Short tracks (less than 10sec) do not update their metadata to increase the play count. However if I play a short track on my iPod or iPhone and then sync with iTunes the play count and last played info is updated.
This really messes up my smart playlists that use playcount limiters.
I hope there is a fix for this soon.

  • Incorrect play count.

I'm having an odd issue with my play counts. A few days ago, I noticed that iTunes was listing more plays for a few songs than I thought I had. I took one of those songs, gave it a single listen, and re-synced. The play count doubled, from 30 to 60! This happened every time I listened to the song.
I tried resetting the play counts for all my songs, but the old counts returned as soon as I listened to them again.
What do I do? This is wreaking havok on my Last.fm scrobbles!

I believe u can go to (i believe, not 100%) "View". and somewhere under it you can change what is shown. like "Artist", "Album", "BPM" "Year" ect. and u can uncheck "Play Count" then that list will be gone until you recheck it. or you could Highlight all the songs [Command+A] right click, and reset play counts.
that is all i know, hope that helps

  • Empty error dialog when trying to sync (Windows 7 x64 + itunes 9 and 10)

This post:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11692653 describes my problem, but their solution did not work for me (setting Outlook as defauylt and use iTunes 9.2.0.61).
Basically what happens is that every 10 minutes or so, an error box (empty) will pop up - I have auto sync enabled. Switching to manual will stop it of course, but when I manually sync the error occurs. What is strange is that as far as I can tell, my data IS syncing to Mobile Me. It's like the error ocurs regardless.
Any other ideas on how to fix this?
    Details: Windows 7 64bit, iTunes 10 (tried 9.2.0.61), 8 GB RAM, 1TB HDD RAID 0, 2 drives 500GB each - Apple updates run weekly.

I was finally able to make it work. I'm so happy.
For some reason, perhaps it was pure desperation or maybe I had read it somewhere on the internet, I decided to set Outlook as my default mail application. Unbelievably, this made it work - the empty error boxes are gone and synchronization works like a charm.
So, when Outlook asks if it should be default mailer, answer yes. You can also configure this in Outlook or in the Windows 7 start menu -> Default Programs -> Set your default programs -> Outlook.
Just make sure that Outlook is default for everything it wants to be default to. My first attempt set it to "11 out of 13" and it wasn't until I selected to use it to "all file types and protocols that it can handle to default".
Anyway, I'm a happy user now and hopefully this can help others who are experiencing the same issues
