Play counts not updating? - iTunes 11

Just updated to iTunes 11 and track information such as play count, skip count, laste played date, etc. are NOT updating as I listen to songs. I have quite a few smart playlists based around this data and now they aren't updating.
Just me or is this a bug?
Thanks!

Well, how odd. I woke up my computer to find my iTunes behaving in the same manner...
Well as far as I can tell Up Next is not "playing" well with Crossfade (pun intended)
To put it simply, with iTunes 11, you can have either one or the other. Not both. If you have Crossfade on, your play counts/dates will not be updated. If you don't, they will but you won't have any crossfading.  I theorize that this new unnecessary feature has broke the functionality between Crossfading and the Last Played/Play Count fields.
Of course, what more can you expect from a powerful company like Apple? After all, Micro$oft Windows Media Player's crossfade has been broken for a while. Stupid software doesn't start timing the next song until AFTER the first one is finished, Someone sure as heck dropped the ball on that one. I guess it's too much to ask for everything to work as it should in either Media Player.

  • ITunes 12 play counts not updating

So... my home Mac hosts my main iTunes library and was on the last version iTunes 11.  I connect to it from my Windows laptop in my office, with the Home Sharing setting to update play counts and dates turned on (I need this for certain playlists to work).  My Windows machine was also on the latest 11.xx version.  After upgrading the Windows machine to iTunes 12.01, this feature stopped working.  I can play music from my main iTunes library on my laptop just fine, but they don't get updated with the last play date and count on the main library - like it did earlier this morning.
I then upgraded iTunes on my Mac that hosts the iTunes library and it's now on 12.01 as well - but the problem is still there.
Anyone else have this issue?  This isn't the first time I've had an iTunes upgrade break this feature.
Is it ever safe to apply an upgrade to iTunes without worrying about a key feature not working any more?

This again happened to me for a couple of week and all of a sudden my phone decided to go through the 'Trust This Computer' question... and once I clicked 'Yes' it started to remember my last played song.
So... that may be the issue - you, somehow, need to go through that 'Trust This Computer' cycle.  Not sure how to force it to do so but someone / somewhere in this discussion board must have the answer

  • Why is iTunes play count not updating for SOME songs played on iPod Touch?

I have noticed that when I play some songs on my iPod the play count won't update. This only happens with some I bought recently. I was actually testing witha song I purchased 3 weeks ago and the play count will only update if I play it on the computer. However, when I played the song on my iPod Touch 4g running iOS 5, nothing happened. How can I fix this as I use the recently played playlist quite often. also, Im pretty sure most of the songs were downloaded from iTunes app in my iPod.

I've had this problem before with my 1G and still have it with my 2G. I can replicate it EVERY TIME.
If I listen to nothing but music on my iPod touch, and then go back home and sync, I have no problems with the playcount and smart playlists.
However, if I listen to a bunch of music, then play a few games, or browse Safari for a while, any record of my recently listened to music is wiped out. The Music application even loses my place in what song I was listening to and even which artist/album I was last listening to -- kicking me back to main music screen when I click the Music icon on the Home screen.
My hypothesis -- Apple is not using a dedicated/untouchable portion of memory to store playcounts. It is shared with all other memory access. So if an application or Safari uses a lot of memory during your session AFTER you've played your music, your playcounts gets wiped out in the process.
But that's just my take on the situation.

  • Play count not updating - Shuffle 1st gen

My 1st generation iPod shuffle is not updating the play count or last played fields properly.
I have tested it with a few tracks manually dragged into the iPod, and it seems to work if I do this. However the play counts do not update if I use Autofill from my smart playlist. And I tried limiting my smart playlist to 950 MB (It's a 1GB shuffle) and dragging the playlist manually. Again the play count does not update.
This is a pain as I use the smart playlist to pick songs for my iPod and I use play counts in my smart playlist criteria, so it's messed up the way I use my iPod and iTunes.
(It used to work fine when I had earlier versions of Windows, iTunes and iPod software. I had problems getting iTunes to recognise or sync with the iPod, but updating windows to Service Pack 3 fixed this. But have had this play count problem since. I have up to date versions of iTunes and iPod software.)
Anyone had a similar problem and managed to fix it?

I've had this problem too, since the 8.1 release? It had been failing in shuffle mode but not in "not shuffle"/"in order". As of today it failed to update play date/count after playing in the "not shuffle" mode. The songs that were played are untouched, but a like number of other random songs that had not been played show today's date.
The apparent lack of support for older hardware is really disappointing. It certainly does not motivate me to go out and buy more Apple hardware which they will soon stop supporting.

  • Play Count not updating

This is obviously not a major problem, but the Play Count counter on iTunes no longer updates how many times songs play on my iPod. Any ideas on how to fix this so it will do so once again?

I am using auto transfer. It used to automatically update and change the Play Count each time I conected the iPod to add new songs. I believe it was showing how many times the song played before I connected the iPod again to add new songs. It does not do that anymore. Most of the songs show no number as ever being played, even though I know the songs have been multiple times.
The date and time on the iPod are correct.
I do play the songs all the way through. Normally, the iPod is playing on Shuffle mode and I just let it keep going through each song.
Thanks for any help you can give.

  • Play counts not updating on iMac

Updated to iTunes 11.  My play counts are fine from my iPhone and an old iPod (still use iPod Photo in my car) as well as my iPod Nano.  But if I listen to my music on my iMac it doesn't update play counts.
I am using iTunes Match as well, if that makes a difference.  Is this just an iTunes 11 glitch?

NOTE--This issue has been resolved with update 11.0.1.

  • HT1386 Play count wont update between iTunes and iPod Nano 7th Gen

I have a iPod nano 7th generation and have the latest version of iTunes on my MacBook Pro... when I play music on my iPod and connect it to my computer, the play count doesn't update on my iTunes... The same can be said for when I play music on my iTunes...the play count wont update on my iPod...  any ideas how to fix this? AK

If you want to make song files from your iTunes library available on your car audio system, and it connects using a USB port, a new iPod nano is a very expensive way to do it.  If that's the only reason for getting the iPod nano, you should return it and get a cheap 8 or 16GB USB flash drive instead, which costs less than $20.  Here's one that barely sticks out of the USB port.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SanDisk/SDCZ33016G/
You can then leave it connected in the car all the time, except for when you want to update the songs.  An iPod is more fragile (especially screen and battery), and you'll have to always remember to remove it, in case the car overheats or freezes.  It would also be a target for thieves.
For the audio file format, I can't believe any car audio system would ONLY play Window Media files, and not the most common type of audio files, MP3.  Songs purchased from the iTunes Store, and those ripped from music CD (using the default settings), are in AAC format.  It's possible the car system does not play AAC.  So, I would try songs from your iTunes library that are in MP3 format.
You can use iTunes to convert songs from AAC (or any iTunes supported format) to MP3.  So, if MP3 works, and you need details on how to convert audio format using iTunes, please post back.  You cannot convert to WMA format (which is Windows Media audio) using iTunes.

  • Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

    Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.

It's always a good idea to check the requirements before purchasing.
The person I spoke with at 1-800-MY-APPLE gave me totally different info...she said the iPhone 5 would in fact sync with the older version of iTunes and that I could restore from my previous iPhone 4 backup and also bring in my music that way.  Hmmm....
I'm inclined to go by the published specs, but now I have to jump thru a bunch of hoops I wasn't expecting to.

  • Syncing my iPhone 4 will not update iTunes play counts

Running a MacBook Pro with OSX Lion 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5 (141).
Since upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS5 - I have noticed that when syncing my phone in iTunes (wired), my 'play counts' do not update for recently played songs, and any songs played on my iPhone do not appear in the 'Recently Played' playlist in iTunes.
I mange my music manually on my iPhone, so had a go at removing all the music from it, then copying over just one album. Played the first track of that album on my iPhone which had been played 10 times. Synced iPhone, and still says 10 plays in the play count on iTunes.
Have checked the 'Home Sharing computers and devices update play counts' in the 'Sharing Preferences' in iTunes, but this has no effect.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
    Is it a bug?
Am I missing something glaringly obvious?

Dalmanac, I hear you. I record all of my plays to a database, and iOS5 has broken that for me. Quite frustrating.
I've done a bunch of testing tonight, a bit more thoroughly than I did on the weekend. There are two scenarios where I appear to be able to get the phone to sync plays back the the library.
Play a song from the iPhone through iTunes:
    1. Connect iPhone.
    2. Play song through iTunes, but from iPhone.
2.1 iTunes briefly says "updating files on phone" or something such
2.2 iPhone count increases (viewable in iTunes)
    3. Click on Music Library -> play count has not updated
    4. Sync iPhone -> play count in Music Library updates
This implies to me that syncing from the iPhone on iOS5 CAN work. The functionality is there, just broken.
Repeating those steps, but playing the song on the phone, not iTunes sees the iPhone count update, but not Music Library.
Starting a fresh library (yeah, I know, I don't want to do that either) and leaving the phone in Automatic mode appears to sync plays from the iPhone when played from the iPhone. I just tested with one track, but it seems to work without issue.
Starting a fresh library and using Manually Manage Music does not work, or at least I can't get it to. It behaves the same as keeping the existing library in manual mode. iPhone count updates, library count doesn't.
The last thing I want to do is start a new library and turn off Manually Manage Music. For the time being I've changed my database import from reading the music library XML to exporting a playlist from the phone of the day's plays (including play date and count) and importing from that. At least for a bit to see if this gets syncing issue fixed - or if I can find the magic combination of making it work again with my existing music library in manual mode.
If anyone learns anything further about how to get it working or has any further diagnosis please post.

  • Do iTunes play counts cause update of iPod?

For example, when I play a song in iTunes, the next time I sync my iPod, does the play count change cause an update for the iPod?
I don't recall this happening before, back in the old days.
    Thanks,
    Joel

I am not sure if this is the way it's always been, but I remember it being this way since I started using the auto-update in iTunes 4.9. Playcount changes do cause and update of the iPod.

  • Ratings and play counts not synced to iTunes

I just got a 2G iPod nano 2GB. Whenever I add ratings or increase the play count for songs on the iPod and then sync to iTunes, the ratings and play counts are obliterated by whatever iTunes has for its data. Example: I make a 5 star smart playlist in iTunes with Live update, then while listening to iPod I rate some songs with 5 stars. They show up in the playlist on iPod since they have 5 stars, but once I sync with iTunes again, the stars are wiped out and the smart playlist is back to exactly what is was in iTunes.
It seems to me that syncing should take whichever has newer information (iPod or iTunes) and propagate it to the other. I read some topics from others that had this same problem and people have repeatedly stated that Automatic syncing must be enabled and not manually manage music. I don't have room to put all my music on the iPod, but I have enabled automatic syncing with selected playlists. My question is this: does this count as automatic updating for the purposes of ratings and play counts being copied to iTunes when I sync with iPod? Or does automatic sync need to be for the entire library in order for ratings and play counts to be propagated? Thanks!
    iPod nano 2G   Windows XP

My question is this: does this count as automatic updating for the purposes of ratings and play counts being copied to iTunes when I sync with iPod?
it should do. green eyes is a second gen nano, i'm syncing selected playlists only, and my play counts and ratings are updating in the smart playlists.
are you playing the songs through completely? i'm noticing that i only get a playcount update if i've completely played the song. (the ratings changes go through regardless of whether or not i've completely played a song on green eyes, though.)

  • Sync Play count between iPod & iTunes when manually update selected

    Hello,
I use manual updating on iTunes simply because I have so much music, it wont fit onto my iPod, so I manually select the songs I want on.
I have been reading and find that doing this stops the iPod and iTunes from updating the Play count and Last played. Doesnt this sound a bit daft?
People have played suggestions such as creating certain playlists that are automatically synced with the iPod, but my songs are all in playlists.
Is there any addon or way that you can get the iPod and iTunes to automatically sync that part so it updates? Without turning on automatic syncing?
    Thanks

Playcounts only sync if you are syncing. They don't if you're manually managing your music. Sorry.
