Play DVD on laptop and transfer to iMovie?

Hi all.
Is there a way to play a home burned DVD on a mac laptop and transfer it to iMovie on another Mac?
I have a DVD that I need to take some footage off of and put into a section of an iMovie project. For some reason it freezes on my stand alone DVD player but plays alright on my mac laptop.
Thanks much!

You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

  • Play DVD on iMac and watch it on TV

I don't have a DVD player with my television. If I want to watch DVD movies on my TV screen, can I do this by connecting my iMac -- which plays DVDs -- to my television?
Is this where I would need the Apple Video Adapter? According to the iMac manual, I plug one end into the video-out port of the iMac and the other into the S-video port on the back of the TV. Is that all there is to it? Don't I need video cable, or is that part of the adapter?
Do I control the playback of the DVD via the DVD Player program on the iMac? And if I have a VCR connected to the TV, do I have to disconnect that first before DVD playback will work?
I hope anyone who's done this can tell me what I need to know. Thanks all.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

Any issues of using the keys Fn + F4 to cycle through the

of. Does the DVD Asset Xtra work under these conditions in the

  • Satellite M30X: drive won't read data DVD-R's but plays DVD-R movies and CD's

    I have a Toshiba M30X with DVD/CDRW combi drive.
I have accumulated 12gb of digital photo's that I wanted to clear but did not fancy the number of CD's that entailed so I purchased a LITEON EZ-DUB external DVD rewriter and made 3 DVD-R's full of JPEG's.
However, when I put these DVD's in the Toshiba combi drive, it clicks away for a moment or two but when I click on the combi drive in My Computer, the folder is empty and it says there's 0 bytes.
CD's still work, both audio and data, DVD movies play just fine, DVD-R's made on my Pioneer DVD recorder (for TV - looks like a video/nothing to do with PC) play fine, but it will not recognise DVD-R's with data (JPEG's or MP3's) on them.
It makes no difference which software was used (both Nero 6.6 and LITEON EZDUB) and it doesn't matter whether the discs are finalised, single session, multi session or what - it won't play any of them.
These discs however work perfectly in my 7 year old desktop with a 4 year old Sony DVD/CDRW combi.
    I'm stumped.
I don't particularly want to reinstall windows in case it doesn't recognise the Recovery DVD and I seem to remember Microsoft One Note having to be activated by telephone with a code that is different each time you ask it to generate one.
It's a bit of a pain as I wanted to carry my photo's with me in my laptop bag.
I don't want to be carting around an external DVD writer just to read the DVD's.
    I've updated the firmware for SD-R 2512.
It had no effect other than to freeze on an all black screen during restart - I had to hold down the power switch after 15 minutes in that condition.
The laptop is 1 year and 26 days old if that counts for anything.
Anyone have any ideas? Or do I just put up with it.

    Hi
Well, I can only make some suggestions.
You are able to place many MP3 and Jpeg files on the DVD.
Maybe this is a reason why the explorer cannot handle the DVD.
Try to burn the DVD with JEPG picture but don't make the DVD full with these files.
You should let a free space on the medium. Maybe it helps.
But it's very strange for me and this is only a suggestion. I have never tired it and don't know if it helps.
I had a similar issue on my notebook but I have solved it by using a compatible medium. Some drives prefer different mediums for different kind of files.

  • TV/DVD 22DL833B combo is playing DVD in black and white

We were given a year old, but never used Toshiba 22DL833B tv and dvd all in one.
On playing a DVD, the picture is black and white. As far as we are aware, there is no physical fault. We are unable to check if it is just the dvd player that is affected as we do not have sky multi room to test tv channels, it was purely for our daughter to watch dvd 's on.
We have gone through all the setting on the menu button on the remote and cannot find a solution.
Does anyone have a solution? Thank you.
Edit: it is capable of colour, as the icons in the settings menu e.g picture settings are partly blue.

    This sounds really strange.
Does the black/white picture appear playing all possible DVDs?
Ive no plausible explanation for that because I did not find any setting/option in the user manual which could explain why this black/white screen appears using the DVD player.
But it could be possible that the issue is related to the different DVD region code.

  • Ripping a dvd, using handbrake and importing to imovie

I have ripped a home DVD in Handbrake to my Mac Book pro running mountain lion in a mp4 format to my desktop.  When I try to import the file into imovie it appears to be importing, takes awhile shows % etc but when finished I can not find the event in imovie. Any thoughts? Thanks

Handbrake is not the right app if you plan to edit the video in iMovie.  Handbrake does not create file types/codecs that iMovie or Final Cut can edit.
You will need MPEG Streamclip (free) + the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Component ($20) to convert the DVD for editing.  You need both, as MPEG Streamclip utilizes the QT MPEG2 Component for the conversion.
Your profile indicates you have Mt. Lion (10.8.2) on your Mac.  There are some special installation instructions for installing both applications on a Lion/Mt. Lion Mac - read it on the MPEG Streamclip website first, before you install either application.
If the DVD video is 4:3 standard def, convert it to QuickTime/DV-DVCPRO NTSC.  If it's 16:9 highdef, convert it to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.  Import the resulting converted files into iMovie and you will be able to edit them.

  • Playing DVD Crashes MBP (no matter what dvd player software I use)

    Current specs:
    OSX 10.6.6
    2.8 GH Core 2 Duo
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    512MB GeForce 9600M GT
I first got my mac book pro from a friend and did a fresh install of OSX. I dont believe I ever tried to play any dvd's on it until now (months later).
Originally when I got installed, I went through and deleted a lot of the default mac apps using appzapper that I didn't want cluttering up my install, and that included "DVD Player".
Fast forward a few months, I try to play DVD in vlc and it crashes vlc. I cant open the file on the disk directly, nor can i just go to "open disc". if i click it it spins up and then it stays at zero and wont play. If i try to view the file right on the dvd with vlc it either crashes or plays a garbled 2-10 seconds and then crashes
I ended up figuring this was because i deleted dvd player and must have deleted some codec or something along with it... after googling i remember people saying they deleted dvd player and had problems. So i got Pacifist and installed dvd player directly onto the computer
Same issue, vlc crashes, and now when i put in a dvd, DVD Player stops responding immediately. if i start up dvd player first with no disk in, it loads fine. when i put the dvd in it just stops responding and wont play.
    so far I have
    1. deleted preferences in dvd player
    2. I'm POSITIVE it's not the dvd. i just watched the dvd in my friends older mac laptop. Likewise, every dvd i rent from redbox will do this so i know its not just this particular dvd
    3. CD's load just fine from the player, just not dvd's
    4. ive tried changing the display interlace quality from the view menu in dvd player
    5. I tried making a new admin account and playing it with dvd player from there and the same thing happened, just stopped responding
    6. I just tried zapping PRAM and NVRAM (command option P + R), still no dice
    7. Okay, i just tried opening in VLC media player with 'no dvd menus' and it didnt crash.. it still didnt play but it at least allowed me to see the error output (see down below the post)
The only thing i can think of is i somehow corrupted some basic fundamental/hardware-software interface driver or soemthing that allows dvd's to be read (codec? i have no idea), as it crashes any dvd app I have tried. (so far only vlc and dvd player). I tried in quicktime but couldnt find how to open a dvd
    Thanks!

Having tried to re-install the DVD Player application it might be worth applying the 10.6.6 combo update (not the update via Software Update). From the threads I've read here it can often help with issues in this kind of area. Other than that it might be worth backing up your files and consider starting with a fresh copy of OS X. For all the space these apps take up I'd probably recommend leaving all the Apple ones alone.
I take it you have the same problem in Front Row too?

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

You will get better results if you use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and then drag the movie from the Movies pane of the Media Browser in iDVD onto the menu window.
Also I suggest you use this workflow which I learned from Bengt:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
