Play lists lost porting from XP machine to Win8 machine

Lost my ipod.  Trying to port itunes to new computer.  Playlists were lost. Can't get to customer support cuz don't have serial number.  Never backed up device and also never registered it.  How to get to support?

You won't see anything if you examine the .itl database file, unlike the .xml it ins't human readable, but if the library is still in a working state on the original machine then review the way that you copied it and compare with my migrate iTunes library post. It should be possible to copy over the library files again to bring your library data across with playlists, ratings, play counts etc.

Can I restore a photo that i have misfiled from time machine?

Select Help Center from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" which should find several articles on how to use TM to restore individual items from a backup.
    Also,
A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • Lost Events from Time Machine

I've lost some Events from a Time Machine backup and I'm pretty sure that I'm never going to get them back but I wondered if anyone else has had this experience and whether you were able to explain what happened.  I want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
I regularly make time machine backups, and last year the following happened:
    12 July 2012 - Time Machine Backup
29 July 2012 - Import a new event to IPhoto
30 August 2012 - Import a new event to IPhoto
    29 September 2012 - Time Machine Backup
    19 October 2012 - Time Machine Backup
I know the two events imported successfully because I used them to upload a select few photo's to FB and I also ordered a few from photobox.
This week I viewed the 19 October backup and the two events are missing, they are also missing from the September backup.  I have noticed that both the iphoto backup files in Sep and Oct say last modified on 12 July 2012 which is a bit wierd.
I've tried TestDisk and PhotoRecovery, and also bought DiskDrill, I recovered over 60,000 jpegs but these two events have completely disappeared.  I ran the software recovery on the MacBook HardDrive, the TimeMachine Harddrive and my camera. No luck on any of them.
The camera is a Lumix Panasonic DMC-FZ38 in case that matters.
If anyone has any idea whats gone wrong, I'd be grateful of some help so I dont lose any more photos.  I've tried the Genius Bar at Apple but my helper didn't know what to suggest.
    Cheers

A couple of things as you note TM is not an archive system. It is a back up system and anything removed from the computer will eventually be removed from the backup
Also TM is not designed to be run occasionally. It should always be running doing hourly backups. Running it the way you do totally defeats it purpose and because each run has so many changes makes it much more likely to have problems are for you to lose track of what you have. Based on your dates I'm guessing that for some reason a number of your runs failed and you missed or ignored the failure notices
And note that TM could not delete an event. It could fail to complete a backup so the latest library is not backed up or it can delete so  older library so old events go away but is can not parse the iPhoto library and remove an event
I strongly suggest you use TM the way it was designed and leave it always running

  • Lost data from time machine

hi. I have a good old MacBook. Around 6years I've owned it without it ever putting a foot wrong right up until a free upgrade to mavericks.
Having used mavericks for for a couple of weeks I was disappointed. everything had slowed down and it became very frustrating. (Why does apple give upgrades to machines that can't handle them?) I decided to go back to snow leopard. Oh wait, I can't downgrade! Thanks apple. So after looking at these forums I deleted the hard drive and reinstalled from my boot discs. Excellent  I thought. I attached my time machine drive and went back to a date just prior to mavericks recover. Clicked restore. Waited for 3 hours to find basically nothing had restored. No music on itunes. No photos on iPhoto. And on and on. I decided to try again and use the option to restore from TM during the install. Got my log in screen. Thought bingo! Password rejected! What?!? It's the only password I ever used!! Read these forums. Got some advice. Tried again. Reset my password in disc utility. Got to the screen. Excellent. Logged in. Where are the photos. Where are the applications. Where is my music. Things like iPhoto iTunes FaceTime all greyed out. During all of this debacle on one attempt I had a message telling me time machine was full and it had to delete old back ups. fair enough. So now I check the TM drive and there are only 3 files. THREE!! There were hundreds before I started this debacle. One happens to be the one just before the upgrade so I thought that's ok. Still got everything I need.

Somehow - I don't know how I have all my data. I sorted out the log-in loop by re-installing the OS-X snow leopard. even though iPhoto doesn't work the files are there in the 'all pictures' folder in finder.
Now, here is another problem - I have also re-installed the bundled applications disc but I cannot use iPhoto, contacts, facetime,iTunes, iMovie. this I do not understand. Everything has been installed as intructed but the icons are grayed out with a circle with a line through it over them,  I don't want to download iPhoto at cost as I already paid for it once.

  • Can I restore a lost note from Time Machine?

I had a note "document" on my macbook air that dissappeared.  I have been regularly backing this mac
up with Time Machine and figured that I should be able to find an old copy, but I can't figure out
how to search Time Machine for notes.   Any suggestions?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes
Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Restore the selected item from the most recent backup that predates the unwanted changes.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • HT2905 I have lost all my play lists from my itumes library, and all of a sudden i have 2/3/4 duplicates of the same song. when i look at when they were added it says all added on 11th March 2013! i added most of them years ago. please help?!!

All my plat list have vanished, and all of my library has been duplicated and triplicated and some have 4 copies. i looked to try and delete the copied ones and tried to delete by putting on when they had been added. the date came up 11th march 2013 for ALL of the songs!. my library is at least 4 years old, and i constantly add songs. so why would it come up that date? and why have all my play list dissapeared?(I think also on that date)  please help?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.
Reverting to an earlier version of your library may clean up the duplicates issue along with restoring the original date added values. If you still have real duplicates I have a tool that might be able to help...

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • Lost I tunes tracks after restore from time machine

    Hi all
I have had to restore OS X using a backup from time machine for resons I wont go into.
The backup was only from a few days previous, all seemed well but when i went into itunes I had gone from nearly 8000 tracks to less than 3000.
Oh poo I thought, so I restored again using time machine, but this time I used a backup from only an hour before I did the first restore,  but now I have lost even more of my tracks in Itunes.
And I do mean lost they are no longer listed in itunes
What the **** is going on?
And is there a way to get them back

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
First, are you running Leopard or Snow Leopard? Your settings at the bottom of your post say Snow Leopard, but this is the +Leopard > Time Machine+ forum, so I'm not sure which is right.
Did you do the full system restore, starting by booting from your OSX disc? If not, what exactly did you do?
Exactly what is wrong with Software Update? What happens, or doesn't happen?

  • Lost mail rules when upgrading to ML, can't restore from time machine

    Hi,
I've installed mountain lion and restored from time machine and mail rules were not there. There's only news from apple.
I tried to restore the rules myself (MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup) but when opening mail rules were not there yet. Nevertheless, i can add rules manually, so if there was a way of looking at the past rules I could just copy them (though it's not the best way).

My rules are still there, so perhaps Apple support speak with resource forked tongue.
Comparing an old (pre ML) rules file from 20th June with the ML one, the differences are:
The file name was: MessageRules.plist, the ML one is SynchedRules.plist. Both are in my V2 folder, but the old Rules have been copied (by Mail, not me) into the new SynchedRules file.
In the old file, for each item (Rule) the first line was Active (Key) String (Type) 1 (Value). In the ML file, this line is no longer there, so the first line is AllCriteriaMustBeSatisfied.
You can see these differnces in the "preview" part of Finder Show Info, if you have the two files to compare.
Thus, just copying and renaming the old Rules file probably won't work, because of this difference. Mail probably just makes a new file because the copied file isn't as expected. It should be possible to edit the old plist file to remove the "Active" line, and rename it to SynchedRules.plist (but see below). The top is slightly different, just below <dict>, as this relates to the Active line. There are a  couple of lines at the bottom that aren't in the new file.
The "Active" line that has gone is now in a file called RulesActiveState.plist. This file is just a list of RuleIds from the SynchedRules.plist (like this:
    AC6F6611-FF61-4AA6-9682-BA100EFAC233)
Doing this does sound rather tedious, but might be quicker than manually re-entering blocked email addresses etc. to replicate old rules. As plist files are in xml format, it should be possible to use a text editor to delete the unwanted "Active" line from the message rules list by Find & Replace All (with nothing). All this could then be copied to the "SynchedRules.plist. You would need to copy the RuleIds into the RulesActiveState.plist as well.
Make a copy of the files first just in case...

When I import my music files to iTunes will I be creating new files for every file I import? If the answer is YES; where are those files going to be stored and how much space will they use?
To begin with you can't manage FLAC in iTunes. The use of iTunes is at this moment limited to WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, AAC and MP3. But that's not a problem because if I understand you correctly you want to organize the MP3-files in iTunes.
When you import music files you can let iTunes copy all files and put it in an iTunes-media-Folder. You can make the choice in preferences-->tab advanced.
If you deselect the second blue checkbox (sorry, in Dutch) iTunes won't copy files as you import the files in your library. It will use the files from the place they are on the disk now. So you have a choice. But if you want iTunes to copy them, they will be placed in a folder called iTunesMedia. This is how it placed on your disk.
All files will be put in one music folder well ordered by artist and albums. If you want to make a backup of all your music you just have to copy the iTunes folder to another disk. You can backup all music at once. How much space they will use depends on the bitrate of the MP3 and whether you add more tagging to it. You can have iTunes add album artwork. That means adding gif or jpg files to your library. Are you using bitrate 320 for your MP3?
If you tell me I can give you estimates on the disk-space you will need.

  • How do you transfer your play lists from one hard drive to another on the same computer?

I had itunes running on my old computer.
    The mother board gave up.
Got another computer and put the good drive from the old computer into the newer one as a slave.
I have itunes all set up but can't figure out were to get my play lists and cover art to get them to the new drive/program.
    Bob

Hold shift when you launch iTunes. It will let you chose a library. Chose the one one the slave drive from your old computer and it will look just like it did when you last used it on the old one.
It will be located in your User folder under My Music\iTunes
