Play Mac Classic Shockwave files (7-8) in OSX

I am in the process of reviewing the output of Director
(Shockwave Files) from the years 2000-'02 that were originally
authored in Director 7.0 - 8.5. I want to update the output files
(Shockwave) so they can play again in the OSX environment.
I am using a Mac PowerPC G4 running OS 10.4.8. I don't have
the original source files from Director, nor do I have an MX
version of Director.
How can I playback these files? Can I use the most recent
flash player or shockwave player?
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Probably your only solution is to get a Mac that is capable of running OS 9 or at least Classic, such as a Mac with a G3 or G4 processor.
Sheepshaver is known to have problems with games.
There is a Classic forum under Mac OS X Technologies where you might be able to find more help.

  • Mac classic clarisworks files

How i do i transfer word processing files on a mac classic (clarisworks 2.0) onto a macbook pro? My macbook pro has appleworks 6. The thing is the mac classic only has a floppy disk and the closest thing I own to a floppy drive is an external zip drive that I do not use anymore.

This information-dense article is a true representation of what is going on, but is nearly impenetrable -- largely because it assumes we have dedicated File Servers all over the place rather than two Macs (with built-in File Sharing capabilities) we want to connect:
301183- Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: "Connection failed" error when connecting to an AFP server
    My interpretation follows:
Which Mac can be a File Server (source of shared files) under what circumstances:
To make way for the upcoming Intel Macs, AppleTalk and TCP/IP drivers for 10.4 were modified.
    File Sharing via AppleTalk:
7.5.3 through 10.3.9 can share their files via AppleTalk.
10.4 cannot share its files via AppleTalk, and cannot mount drives from Macs that only want to share via AppleTalk. (AppleTalk printing in 10.4 is still supported.)
    File Sharing via TCP/IP:
OS 9 and later can share its files via TCP/IP.
7.5.3 and later can mount other Mac's files on its desktop via TCP/IP if you use the "Server IP Address" button in the AppleShare Chooser Extension.
    Executive Summary:
The scenario that always works is to start from the older, pre-9 Mac, and mount the 10.4 Mac's shared drives or shared folder on the older Mac by using the "Server IP Address" button in the Chooser.
Note: when using 7.5.3, you may have to download newer version of Open Transport and/or the AppleShare Chooser extension, but these are readily available. There is also a US$40 Utility available from called ShareWay IP, that allows pre-9 Macs to share their files using IP.

  • How can I transfer document files from my mac classic to my macbook?

I have a floppy drive on my old mac classic and cd drive on my macbook.  Is there some way to connect the two and transfer files directly?

A Macintosh Classic (http://support.apple.com/kb/sp198) has a SCSI hard drive. Even though the hard drive can be removed and placed in an external SCSI enclosure, it is not going to be easy to find a way of connecting it to a modern Mac. That would normally require a USB-to-SCSI adapter, which may or may not be supported under the latest operating system versions.
The easiest method of transferring files from a Macintosh Classic may be via an external USB floppy drive connected to the modern Mac. 1.44 MB Mac-formatted floppy disks can be used for such transfers (not 800K).
A SCSI Zip (100) drive could in principle be connected to the SCSI port of the Macintosh Classic. The Zip disk could then be moved to a USB Zip (100) drive connected to a modern computer.
The Macintosh Classic does not have built-in Ethernet, nor a slot for an Ethernet card (certain other "classic" Macintosh computers do have the ability to hold an Ethernet card). There are some external solutions (such as SCSI-to-Ethernet adapters), but with limitations. For a networking overview, the http://www.applefool.com/se30/ web page could perhaps be of interest.
It is also possible to arrange a null-modem connection between a Macintosh Classic and a modern computer, providing that a USB-to-serial adapter is attached to the latter (appropriate terminal emulation programs are needed on both sides).

  • How do you play MPG and WMV files on a MAC?

I am no longer able to play MPG and WMV files on my MAC. I have Flip4MAC, which is I think what I used to use to play them (but not sure). All I know is that I used to be able to before but now they won't play. Do I need some sort of different software or has Microsoft started making these files in a way that won't allow MAC users to play them? If anyone is kind enough to help, please explain in the most basic terms as I'm not that computer literate.

If the .mpg/.mpeg files are non-rights-protected you should be able to play them in Quicktime or iTunes. If the wmv files are non-rights-protected you should be able to use Flip4Mac. If the mpg/mpeg or wmv files are rights-protected you'll need the software or subscription that allows you to view copyrighted files.

  • How to play AVI and MKV files on a Mac?

First let me say I'm converting to mac soon. Hence these questions.
I know VLC player can play AVI and MKV files on a Mac. But I want to use DivX Plus Player cause it has a prettier user interface. Does DivX Plus Player play all AVI and MKV files on a Mac?
Does Perian still work on the latest version of Mountain Lion?
Does converting AVI and MKV files to MP4 using the free software Handbrake cause severe loss of quality?
Does an App exist on the Mac App Store that can play AVI and MKV files?
    Thank you.

I have a Mac OS X version 10.3.9. I cannot find a browser that is up to date or one that will play any video type files. Could anyone tell me if there is something up to date? or can the software be updated on this computer to get up to date?

Visit MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and search for browsers. However, I doubt you will find any contemporary browsers that work with Panther.
Have you considered upgrading your OS, if possible, or getting a newer computer?
BTW, you've posted this in the Servers and Enterprise Software forum. In the future you should post in the appropriate forum for you question. This forum isn't the right one. Mac OS X v10.3 and earlier would be the right place to start.

  • HT3775 my mac wont play a quicktime movie file, it keeps saying i need a codec and then bringing me to this page. there is no links on where to get this codec? help!!!

I try play this quicktime movie file and then it says i do not have the required codec and the only thing i can press is "ok" or "tell me more" and then it just brings me to this page, it says nothing about how to obtain this certain codec. I need this to work on my macbook! Its not the video file because it works perfectly fine on the iMacs at University. Help me out, please!

Quicktime has it's limitations and can't, natively, play certain video formats.
Try VLC.  It should be able to play anything you throw at it.

  • No sound from shockwave files

I am running OS 10.4.9 on a G5 iMac. Recently I discovered that Shockwave files will not play sound. I upgraded to Quicktme7.1.6 and have a hunch (from what I've read here) that it may be the culprit. I installed the Flash Player 9 upgrade. Still no sound. This occurs when using Test Movie in Flash (ver. MX2004), Quicktime Player or Safari or other browser to play the files. Also any sounds imported into Flash will not play in Test Movie or by using the play button in the Library in Flash. Mov files play fine in Quicktime Player. However, when I try to export files as Quicktime from Flash i get the message "The installed version of Quicktime does not have a handler for this type of macromedia Flash movie." Also when I try to paste a pdf document copied from Preview into Freehand MX, I get an error message "QuickTime™ and a TIFF (LZW) decompressor are needed to see this picture". All this leads me to think the problem is with Quicktime. I'd like to reinstall 7.1.5, but it appears to be quite the undertaking. Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi David
The flash file plays --no sound. Is there supposed to be? Anyway, I don't necessarily want to make a Quicktime movie from a flash file...just that if I try to do it (export to a Quicktime) I get an error. And still no sound. I'm thinking at this point that reinstalling the system files and going back to Quicktime 7.1.5 may be necessary. I was hoping to avoid that. Also appreciate that you are using Flash MX2004 with QT7.1.6 with no problems. At first i thought that my older version of flash may not work with a newer version of QT, but obviously that's not the problem.
i may try the "Genius Bar" at the local Mac store before i get into the whole reinstall thing.
Thanks for your help. If you or anyone else for that matter has any more ideas, I will keep checking back.
    Thanks again.

  • MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files.

Since "upgrading" to Lion my MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files, all I get is a black screen and the audio.  It's so frustrating!!
I've read many other posts all along the same lines and wherever possible I've tried to follow the advice which has been given but nothing works.    I've updated all the drivers I can and I've even reinstalled Lion, nothing makes a difference.
I'm not really looking for any more advice, all I want is someone from Apple to read these posts, realise there is problem and get working on a fix or update.
I had no problems when running Snow Leopard and it would seem, looking at everyone else's problems, that the common issue is Lion.   Seriously, this is one area where Lion is a backwards step.   It should just work (like most things from Apple), but it doesn't.
Personally I believe there is a problem with Lion but from what I've found out from speaking to friends with other Apple kit, this might be a random issue only affecting some people as some have said they've had no problems while others have had the same issues as me.    One guy reinstalled Lion and it resolved the issue for him, I've not been as lucky.
As I say, I'm not really looking for more advice, simply some sort of update from Apple to fix it.   PLEASE!!!

This is a peer-to-peer user forum. Perhaps you would see more action if you and others would file a formal "Bug" report with Apple QuickTime technical people rather than repeatedly reporting a possible problematic problem which may or may not affect others on a random basis. QUICKTIME PRODUCT FEEDBACK
Since you aren't seeking further advice here is what I have observed. Not being a regular WMV file user, I had to create my own sample file to test—a WMV 9 file containing WMV3 compressed video and WMA2 compressed audio. Since I normally use QT 7 as my primary media player, I also stored the WMV data in its partially decompressed form in an MOV file container to avoid pre-playback delays in "classic" player routines and also provide a secondary playback test of MOV wrapped content. These files play as follows using the Flip4Mac component/player support and uncoded URL uploads:
QT 7.6.6 "Open File" - both files play correctly.
QT 7.6.6 "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
QT X.1 "Open File" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file plays video without audio.
QT X.1 "Open Location" - WMV file appears to open but plays with "black" screen and no audio. MOV file plays video without audio.
VLC "Open File" - WMV plays correctly. MOV file doesn't open,
VLC "Open URL" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file appears to open but nothing plays.
MPEG Streamclip "Open File" - both files play correctly.
MPEG Streamclip "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
GarageBand - WMV file will not import but MOV file does.
iTunes - WMV file will not import. MOV file container is accepted but as soon as iTuness sees the compression formats, it aborts import.
Safari - WMV file URL auto-downloads and playes in the QT X.1 Player. The MOV file URL opens and plays in Safari.
As you can see from these results the files do play but are subject to many different constrints based on old/new video technology support, independent QT subsets and/or container trapping constraints. In short, individual user results will depend on presence/absence of component support, actual compression formats, file container, application being used, and how the application is being used. Unfortunately, most users here can't or won't provide the prerequisite information or a sample file for independent examination. This makes it next to impossible to give advice in these matters or categorize the specific nature of the problem.

  • Hard time for selecting Startup Disk (partition) in Mac Classic II.

Dear coleagues, I'd like your help to understand and solve a tricky trouble. I'm sorry for the long text, but the issue is probably living in a small detail.
The issue regards a Mac Classic II with internal and external HDDs. Internal HDD has two partitions, a smaller with System 7.1 (first) and a larger with System 7.5.3 (second). This one is installed there since 5 years ago, working fine.
The (just installed) external HDD has 6 partitions (because of its size 9 Gb). It has been formated runing VCP in this Classic II itself and all partitions are initialized with HFS. It is intended to be a backup for my Classic II as well as my Mac Plus. I've started Installing System 7.5.3 in its third partition. Other partitions remain still empty.
Using only internal HDD I can already perceive that "Startup Disk" control panel is unable to change the boot partition attribute between partitions in the same drive. When I open "Startup Disk" it usualy both partitions of internal HDD are highlighted. I can select a Zip Drive, for instance, and it will boot from Zip. But, when I switch it back to HDD, doesn't bother wich partition I select, it will always boot with the same partition (usually 7.5.3). Then, If i open Startup Disk CP again, both partitions are again highlighted.
To switch between partitions in the same drive, I use Lido 7.5.6 PMount and there I select the boot partition. Then every time I select my HDD, that'll be the default boot partition.
My conclusion is that in Mac Classic II the Startup Disk CP is unable to set a partition within a drive, it selects the drive only. The boot will obey the drive's partition table flag. That's why I can do it whith Lido, writing directly at HDD's flags.
Now, attaching the external HDD, I can see all its partitions in Startup Disk CP and then I select one of them (the 3rd, with 7.5.3). Before rebooting, I close and open again the Startup Disk CP, then I can see all its 6 partitions highlighted. Just like I've been doing with the internal HDD, probably the solution to set a specific boot partition would be through Lido 7.5.6 PMount again. But Lido is unable to handle this drive. It appears gray in the drives list.
What does it sound to you? What would you recommend to test? Is there an alternative for Startup Disk CP?
    Thank you.
    Regards, Ciro (Brazil)

    Dear Jan, good Evening.
    Thank you for your time.
In fact I can select a specific partition, but by closing and reopenning Startup Disk CP I realize that the selection has been attributed to the physical drive (all partitions highlighted).
I have tried Startup Disk CP in both System 7.1 and System 7.5.3. They do the same way.
Internal HDD has been formated, partitioned and initialized with Apple HD CS Setup.
This external HDD in a different way. Apple HD SC Setup hasn't been able to "see" it, probably because of its prior format system. Lido neither. That's why I went to VCP. Moreover, as it is too big for 68030, I had to format it attached to a Performa 6360. After formating, I've let VCP make set the partitions in HFS mode (partitions with 512, 1024 and 2032 Mb).
I've mounted VCP in Mini VMac to get some screenshots for you:
Bringing it back to Mac Classic II, it could be mounted with Lido, but System 7 has asked to initialize all partitions again. I've accepted, installed system 7 on it, and it didn't boot. Then I've repeated the partitioning and initializing procedures using Apple HD SC Setup (since now there's a Mac HDD with "small" logical drives). Nothing changed.
I'm following your tip about System Picker. I've downloaded the sit file and read about it. It seems to be able to overlay the problem. I'm gonna try it and report back here.
But I feel still uncomfortable not to be able to do things the regular way. As far as I know, the boot partition is an attribute of a drive partition in partition map, just like the "Active Partition" found in FAT systems. I should be able to write there as I can do with Lido in internal HDD.
    Thank you, Jan.
    Best regards,
    Ciro Bruno.

  • Quicktime not playing black magic codec files, or avi

    Hello!
I'm on a new macbook pro (17"). my friend on an older mac laptop can play back a quicktime file in the player that has the blackmagic codec, but I cannot.
I can open the file and play it in final cut pro, I can see it in shake, but I can't play it back in the quicktime player. it shows up all white, but does list the codec as being the black magic 10 bit uncompressed codec.
I've downloaded the codec from black magic, and dropped it in /library/quicktime, but I'm not getting any result.
I've also tried "touching" the quicktime folder like they recommend, but nothing's working.
quicktime's also not playing back avi files, but I know that can be a bigger issue.
    Any ideas?
    thanks!
    -Josh

The Blackmagic Software Codec.component I just downloaded today show it to be PowerPC. Your Intel Mac needs a Universal version or else you need to run using Rosetta.
Your .avi issue is probably the same reasons.

  • IMac .docs to Mac Classic

I own a powerhouse 27" iMac, but I love the old Apple/Macintosh Computer systems. I collect them and even do a minor bit of written work on some of them... just for the nostalgic feel of it.
My question is this: How do I get an RTF file written in Word, Text Edit or [preferably] Pages to transfer over [and be readable/workable] on the Mac Classic?
It works via 1.44mb floppy the other way around, but I can't get anything written on the iMac to be legible on the Mac Classic.

    iconRED,
Part of what you are seeing is meta data. The best illustration of meta data comes by opening a Word '97 document with Word 5.1. The older software will show a lot of gibberish, including information like who created the file and where it is saved to on the hard drive. But, on page ten or twelve, you will see the clean text from the newer software.
Newer software has added so much more information that the older software does not know how to deal with it. The trick is to get the newer software to save the files in the simplest of file formats. Easier said than done.
For example, Office 2004 will crash OS X if you copy more than just text from a website and paste it into a Word document. Copy a file from a website and paste it into TextEdit, paste it into Pages and paste it into Word. You will get three different results. If you copy just small blocks of text from a website, you should get more predictable results.
For example, look at this page:
    http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=1.04
That page gives you three options for looking at the data.
First, one cite at a time,
Second, the whole chapter at a time,
    and
    Third, "print friendly version."
If you copy and paste the whole page into a word processing application, you will end up with some gibberish. If you view the 'printer friendly page and copy the whole block of text, but not the whole page - do not use 'select all' under the edit menu, you will get nice useable text to paste. That information will paste nicely into Word 3.0 or 5.1. The fact that Microsoft successfully developed a way to crash OS X each and every time you try to paste anything but text into a Word 2004 document just shows how much extra junk is included in newer word processing documents.
So, if you want text documents to open cleanly in older software, you need to strip out all the junk. In other words, create a true RTF document on a new computer using new software and you will have backwards compatibility. Add any new features like photos, tables, hypertext, HTML, etc. and you will get gibberish on your older computers.
    Hope that made sense.
    Jim

  • Best Mac video converter (file based) - Search is down...

    Greetings,
I was planning on doing a search, but it's down at this time...
I'm looking for what's considered to be the best and most flexible file based video converter for the Mac. I need to convert VCD's to a format iMovie 08 can edit to output a DVD (yes, yes, I'm aware of quality between the two, this is what my friend needs...)
With the same software I'd like to do all of the fancy conversion file to file be it FLV, MOV, DAT, MPEG etc.
I've been looking at Aimersoft, iSkysoft, and Video Converter for Mac so far.
Any suggestions and personal experience would be wonderful!

There seems to be no need to rename the file extension. I just selected the file from inside the VCD folder and was recognized as a video file.
It's currently converted, but looks glitchy (not on the original). Maybe this is just a product of playing a high demand file on my MacBook?

  • How to play back AVCHD video files without jerkiness result?

Hi all, I have an iMac 27" 3.06Ghz as well as the new MacBook Air 13 1.86Ghz, and both have 4GB of RAM. When I tried to play back AVCHD video files (*.mts) recorded from my Canon HF200 HD camcorder, the play back is always jerky and choppy. I have tried various software like Perian for QT, VLC, MPlayer Extended, all have the same result. However, I can play back other 1080p files like MKV and MOV just fine.
Is the jerkiness problem that I am seeing due to underpowered hardware? or is it I am not using the correct software? Note that I am not trying to edit HD videos, I just want to be able to play them back smoothly. I can play the same files on Windows 7 natively without any issues.
I am curious if any of you have the same problem. Please help!
    Thanks in advance.
    Ken

    Swaza,
Just thought I would jump in and share some experiences with .tod and .mod files.
I too have the JVC GZ-HD7 camera and I can confirm that the new version of the MPEG-SC 1.93beta will open and convert .tod to .mov for use with iMovieHD. I am not sure that the files can be used with iMovie08 since I have not tried, but it will work in iMovieHD just like any other qt or .mov file import.
Also, you can use the QTpro plugin that came with the camera (should be on the CD as the only MAC software available.) This will allow you to open the files in QT and convert them to any other format needed. This plugin unfortunately does not allow QTpro to open the older .mod files of previous JVC cameras. For that you can still use MPEG-SC.
In my experiences over the last few weeks, having mistakenly dumped all of my footage onto my hdd as I used to do with my older JVC cameras, I am now stuck with 3 hours of footage on my HDD as .tod files. I have been struggling to find the right blend of codec type, compression amount, fps, and quality to convert these files in an acceptable resolution (1920x1080 full - another mistake since iMovie08 will not import this quality but will import the 1440 CBR mode.) Converting these files is a nightmare and has become a stain on my otherwise wonderfu lexperience with this new camera (It is an awesome camera despite what negative stuff the "Canon fanboys" are saying!) It takes an unbelievably long time to convert. And you will find that when viewing these files in QT either as .tod or even after converting to .mov, they will be jerky and stutter. I believe this is more to the fact that the files are just really huge. Playback inside of iMovie06HD was perfect for me though.
Hope this helps out and I hope others may offer solutions as to what codecs they are using and what settings they are using to keep the quality as high as possible when converting these files.
